The Non-Canon Expert describes how Darth Plagueis viewed the ancient Sith Emperor Vitiate and what he thought about the powers that Vitiate achieved during his lifetime. We also look at how Vitiate influenced Plagueis's own path with the Force and his attempt to achieve immortality.
This is a Legends story for Darth Plagueis that touches on information found within the great novel "Darth Plagueis" by James Luceno. I hope that you enjoy it!

Plagueis was right about a whole lot of things. Vitiate only cared about immortality, and comparatively little about the Sith and their legacy. He certainly formed a great Sith Empire, but that was only meant to incite the war that would allow him to truly transcend death, and he had no issue turning against it when he had no further use of it. All the Dark Side knowledge Vitiate amassed was lost, and he failed to share it with a true apprentice or the Empire at large. So while he enabled Sith civilization to survive and became legendary for his long reign and the decades-long conflict he caused, his overall contribution to the lasting Sith legacy passed down from generation to generation seems to have been negligible.

Tenebrae (I'm just gonna go with his birth name at this point) has suffered greatly from all the rewrites of his character courtesy of Knights of the Fallen Empire. Based on the Revan novel and first hand recollections from Lord Scourge, Tenebrae as Emperor of the Sith had become so powerful that he started to view the rest of the galaxy as mundane. He cared little for the war of his people against the Republic and the Jedi, and manipulated events to suit his own needs to prepare for his own "ascension". Had he succeeded in his goal of consuming the galaxy as he had Medriaas in his youth, he would have essentially become a god and through this act, he would have more time contemplate the universe as a whole. "You discern a fraction of reality. Beyond these stars like other galaxies, other worlds, other beings. I will experience or ignore them as I wish. I will spend eternity becoming everything: A farmer, an artist, a simple man. When the last living thing in the universe finally dies, I will enjoy peace and wait for the cycle to begin again." This to me seems to be a being who has simply lost touch with the living, breathing universe around him and his twisted way of attaining power is his way of trying to reconnect with it. I think in a way that is somewhat similiar to Dr. Manhattan from Watchmen. He has simply gone too far from his fellow humans. Then of course comes Valkorion, the Immortal Emperor of Zakuul, who feels barely anything like this. He rules an empire on the fringes of the galaxy, worshipping him as a god, defended by an army of neutral-leaning Force users and an armada of automated warships, with a populace that wants for nothing, except maybe something to liven up their boring days. And what turns out be Valkorion's ultimate goal? To let his completely broken children assassinate him, possess the one person in the galaxy who can stop them and then be heralded as a hero brought a new era of peace and prosperity to the entire galaxy. Valkorion talks a big game, but nothing of the mystery of the Sith Emperor is left at this point. It ruined him. Essentially, he went from "I'm going to transcend life itself and reshape it in order to connect with it again" to "I just want people to love me MORE". As Vitiate, Emperor of the Sith, he cared NOTHING for his people and just wanted to transcend his own existence. As Valkorion, he just wanted to be the most beloved person in the universe.
@jaredevans8263
@jaredevans8263 5 лет назад
That's why I don't like Vitiate all that much. His goal was overly simplistic and narrow-minded; he wanted immortality just for the sake of it. He never had a greater goal once his immortality was achieved, he even said something around the lines of "Once all of galactic life belongs to me, I will wait eons for life to start again". Like wtf is the point of that? Darth Bane put all his work into the Rule of Two and future galactic domination, Darth Plagueis worked his ass off to create life by his own hand and to help Sidious get into Republic chancellorship...but Vitiate is just like "my goal is to live forever just for the sake of it"
@BTDZero
@BTDZero 5 лет назад
Tenebrae eventually became disillusioned by the tenets of the Sith. As Valkorion, he described Darth Marr as "narrow-minded, bound by irrelevant ancient dogma", while he praised Darth Jadus as the "greatest Sith" his empire had ever produced. Eventually, with the amounts of power he had aquired, he had become so removed from the lives of those around him that he decided to end it all and wait for life to spring forth again so that he might try to get involved with it again. Once more, I think he's like Doctor Manhattan that way. Tenebrae eventually stopped caring about the Sith or their war with the Jedi. They were just a tool to him. That makes him way more interesting than Valkorion, who's so inconsistent with Tenebrae/Vitiate that he might as well be a completely separate character that was just shoehorned into being one and the same.
@Arauto_Kagnos
@Arauto_Kagnos 5 лет назад
@@BTDZero you're completely misunderstanding Valkorion there, he isn't being kind of the sake of being kind nor does he want to be the most beloved person in the universe. The Eternal Empire is just an Empire built to satisfy his will of being the ultimate power of the universe, the Sith Empire greatly failed at that so he attempted to begin a new elsewhere. The Knights of Zakuul believe the Force, and more power, is a reward for serving the Emperor compare that to the Sith who were likely to attempt to overthrow Tenebrae, which happened twice. So Tenebrae just created a society that would be blindly loyal to him, and most important an order of force wielders who wouldn't stab him in the back, that is very much within his character. A manipulative powerful being doing whatever he wishes, for his own sake. Not to be "loved".
@BTDZero
@BTDZero 5 лет назад
Valkorion wants to be the most powerful being in the universe, but he also wants his subjects to adore him. Satele Shan makes mention of the how Knights of Zakuul's philosophy is that the Force is their reward to their service to their Emperor. The more they honor his commandments, the greater their own power. Valkorion wanting to seen in some sort of positive light by the rest of the galaxy really feels like the only reason why he would even try to sway the player to his side. He could have just killed them with a flick of his wrist, as he did Darth Marr.

I disagree. Vitiate's sole goal was godhood. He had already achieved immortality through essence transfer...just not invincibility. At least he was real close though. Closer than anyone short of beings like Abeloth and others. Vitiate didnt care about Jedi or Sith. He played both sides and used them as a means to an end. He said this himself to Marr and the Alliance Commander in KotET, and many Jedi and Sith confirmed he was immortal and working on becoming invincible.

Tenabrae/Vitiate/Valkorion is my favourite Sith Lord of all time. He's so wise and he has power to back it up. Even Revan wasn't powerful enough to kill him and he was trained by Marka Ragnos. He also killed his first person (his father) just by thinking about it when he was just 6 years old. He killed a thousand Sith by consuming their life essences on Medrias and turning it into Nathema. He had a child who was so powerful he locked her away on Nathema and drove her insane and into a psychotic, genocidal hellbringer. Caused his son to murder his brother in cold blood and had no remorse and also turn him into a cold and callous tyrant. And do you know what makes him spectacularly evil... Momin didn't seem to care for conventional immortality so much as cultural infamy. He would likely see Vitiate as a fool for having achieved the means to create grand works but doing nothing with it, and Plagueis as a fool for trying to manipulate his master and only source of power. Of course, with Sith, one must wonder why they want that level of control at all. The dark side, as Bane learned, perpetuates a meaningless search for power that degrades the self, until only a lust for power remains. If any Sith had succeeded in their goals, they still ultimately would have accomplished no more than a force ignorant nobody.

@@jurassickaijuking6761 Tenebrae was born on the Sith planet of Medriaas and was a member of the Sith species. There he murdered his father (the Sith Lord Dramath, who was the planet's ruler) and took his place. Impressed by his immense power and ambition, Marka Ragnos (the current Dark Lord of the Sith Empire) gave Tenebrae the rulership of the planet and granted him the Sith title, Lord Vitiate. After the Great Hyperspace War was over and Naga Sadow's (Marka Ragnos' successor) Sith forces were nearly annihilated by the Republic, Lord Vitiate called those renmants to his planet so they could re-group. But it was all a trap; as soon as the remaining Sith forces touched the planet, Vitiate dominated their minds and made them execute an incredibly powerful Sith ritual that consumed all life on the planet; granting Lord Vitiate immortality and immense strenght in the Force. He then declared himself the Sith Emperor and made the other renmants of Naga Sadow's destroyed Empire to re-group on Dromund Kaas (this time for real), where he was known as "Lord Vitiate" no longer, he now was simply known as "The Emperor or "The Sith Emperor". At some point during his rule over the Sith Empire, the Sith Emperor encountered the primitive planet of Zakuul but instead of having his Empire conquer it, he went there by himself and explored it. He then decided that the Sith Empire was something he would never compleatly control because of Sith traditions and insted sought to build an Empire from scratch to his image were all would be devoted only to him. The Dark Lord took advantage of the primitive culture of Zakuul and, after possessing the body of a great warrior named "Valkorion", he declared himself the "Immortal Emperor of Zakuul". Vitiate did all Plagueis wanted to do and more… he no longer focused on Sith or Jedi and only focused n his Godhood. He already had a great Sith Empire. And for all we know he could still be around… living a life as anyone doing anything. Ultimately Plagueis while wise in theory could not put his plan into motion which is something Tenebrae was able to do over lifetimes. And Plagueis didnt have to contend with strong Sith Lords and Jedi trying endlessly to kill or overtake him. The Jedi never knew of his existence and there were only 2 true Sith. Sure you can count Venemous. But there were ancient Sith Lords with great power all thru The reign of the Sith Emperor who got bored with the Sith game and started something different elsewhere… So while he was great and all that Plagueis in the end could not look down on the works of Vitiate when he couldnt even live thru his own lifetime

Plagueis certainly makes good points about Vitiates failings but for all Vitiates flaws he formed a Sith Empire that lasted for thousands of years, countless powerful Sith rose and fell during his thousand year reign serving in his empire. In Comparison to Banes and ultimately Plagueis legacy I would still count Vitiate as having more significant success, after all the rule of two continued for a thousand years to bring the Sith back to power but culminated in Sidious ruling for only a few decades and Sith being wiped out.

You see this in SWTOR's KOTFE expansion after Arcann stabs him in the back as he puts himself in the mind of someone probably much more powerful than Palpatine could hope to be (your custom character or simply "The Outlander".) This is assuming he's not able to fight any of them head on. However, I believe he can actually even fight either of them head on considering the fact he had the life force of two planets inside of his body. Unless you're talking Legends Palpatine, there's no hope. Oh yes, furthermore, Palpatine's lightning is the reason he's dead.

If Darth Plagueis had accomplished as much as Vitiate, then he might talk... But paraphrasing the words of Vitiate: "You know how to talk. Now I'll teach you how to listen." The only error Vitiate did, as everyone do at some point, was to build a mind-cage to control Vaylin. Without this cage, he would never had got trapped, and banished into the void. So, the weapon that killed him was his own device. Ironic.

You ever hear the tragedy of Darth Plagueis the wise? I thought not, it's not a story the Jedi would tell you. It's a Sith legend. Darth Plagueis was a dark lord of the Sith, so powerful and so wise, he could use the force to influence the midichlorians to create life. He had such a knowledge of the Dark Side, he could even keep the ones he cared about from dying. He became so powerful, the only thing he was afraid of was loosing his power, which, eventually of course, he did. Unfortunately he taught his apprentice everything he knew, then his apprentice killed him in his sleep. Ironic, he could save others from death, but not himself.

It's curious that Plagueis thinks this way about the old Sith, when almost the exact opposite is true. Darth Vitiate deciding to let go of worldly matters is ultimately what led to his downfall, several times over. It was Darth Marr that unified the Empire after Vitiate decided he was bored of it, and it was Darth Marr's devotion to the Empire and its people that allowed him to truly ascend and become a force ghost, instead of merely a twisted entity or spirit. It's why Darth Marr goes down in history as one of the greatest Sith of all time, because he never lost focus of his Empire, unlike Vitiate or Palpatine. It was Marr's unwillingness to leave his people undefended from Vitiate that allowed him to live on, and eventually pass on.

This video and/or Plagueis are wrong (I assume the latter). Vitiate lived for over 1,300 years. What does immortality mean? Living beyond natural life span and thereafter until the end of time. Immortality does not make a being invulnerable to mortal injuries. The average lifespan of the Sith species is longer than humans but not longer than 1,000 years. I can't find any other Sith who lived as long as Vitiate. The only Sith I could find who lived any where near as long as Vitiate is Adas who died at about 300 years of age. It was confirmed in the Revan novel that both Vitiate and Scourge are immortal but neither are invulnerable. It was not a manipulation of midichlorians but it was immortality nevertheless. We don't really know how much knowledge Vitiate had of midichlorians but we must assume it was substantial... maybe more or less than Plageuis. Whatever knowledge he had he made effective use of it. Plageuis resented Vitiate because he too wanted immortality. One of the means by which he attempted that was the manipulation of midichlorians. Immortality was his ultimate goal, creation and destruction of life with midichlorians was an additional hobby of his. He admitted too that Vitiate's power and skill was negligible compared to other Sith because there was little to no information from which he could learn. As fans we know more about Vitiate than most of the other Sith including Plageuis and Sidious did. We also know that the two of them (Plag and Sids) conspired for decades to challenge the Republic and belonged to a Sith Order that acted from the shadows for a 1,000 years. Vitiate alone superseded their achievement by living longer than 1,300 years during which he must have gained a lot of knowledge (Sith Inquisitor class known for interrogation speciality) and hundreds of thousands of intelligent force users learn more than two. He ordered a large scale war on the Jedi/Republic in much the same way as Sids did with more or less the same result: about 2 decades of dominance over rebels before death. Vitiate was ruling an Empire or two for a millennium before he too was killed. The usual argument is the dark side is divided among hundreds of thousands of Sith during Vitiate's era therefore they must have been weaker than 2 Dark Lords who harnessed all dark side power. It is a nice theory, but we know there were other dark side users during every era and the concentration of dark energy within each individual of Bane's Sith Order failed in terms of demonstrable feats. The Old Republic had exhibitions of very many spectacular feats of dark side power and Vitiate is definitely on top of that list. The limitation on Sith research probably hindered advancements as explained above: more brains the better. Then there are arguments about the legitimacy of those feats. Are they canon feats? Do they belong within their own SW universe? I can only tell you what exists in the SW universe, not speculation about canon. Those feats exist and I've seen nothing like that from Bane's Sith Order that I can compare. With the exception of Plageuis and Sidious, I assume that even Nilhilus can kill Vader, Maul, Dooku and we know how hard it was to kill Sion. Vitiate is much stronger than Kriea's Triumvirate friends. Vitiate devastated entire planets with a planetary death field. He possessed thousands of strong Sith simultaneously. He used force lightning and force storm all the time.
@kevinhower7579
@kevinhower7579 Год назад
This is completely incorrect. After empoying the sith blood ritual created by Exar Kun he became cursed by a similar affliction as Darth Nihlus. The hunger to consume force life energy superceded his ability to feed it. His ultimate goal wasn't to rule the galaxy, it was to consume it in its entirety believing it would essentially make him a God. So no, Tenebrae had no desire to use immortality to rule the galaxy.
