I read about these two prisoners when I was on a vacation in San Francisco. The two escaped through a kitchen window and fell onto the sliver of sand on the side of the island. There the prisoners swam attempting to get to shore. However, one was weak and could not make it. Instead swimming to a smaller rocky island. The other prisoner swam so far he reached the Golden Gate Bridge and swam to the rocks under it on the side of San Francisco. Crazy enough many people visit that area even today. When the prisoner finished swimming he had hypothermia and extreme weakness and a group of teenagers found him to send him to the hospital and sent back to prison.

There was a forth one in the escape (Alan West) he's the one that discovered the ceiling vent. He had a problem during the escape, he couldn't open the hole in his wall because the cement got too solidified (he didn't touch the wall for a few days) So they left him behind

A little girl wrote in after seeing The Bird Man of Alcatraz movie with Burt Lancaster saying that he should be freed. The Warden read aloud some of Stroud's literature, and it was some pretty sick Man/Boy stuff. While prisons where a lot more brutal back then, they where there for a reason in the first place.
