Hornby have just announced several new items for their TT:120 range and now that I'm starting my own layout in this scale I was curious to check out what they have to offer. With the scale seeming to go from strength to strength it'll be interesting to see what Hornby can add to this expanding range as it continues to grow.
I also had some fun making some predictions before taking a look at the announcement - did I get anything right or was I hopelessly wrong? Tune in to find out!

Hornby have previously said DMU's are in the pipeline, but after phase 4, so some time away. The J50 wasn't a surprise to me as at Warley 2022 I spoke to Simon Kohler and asked if they had any tank engines planned and he mentioned the J50 and J94 then. They're choosing shunters with as much room as possible as space is limited in TT, which is another reason the GWR 5700 pannier tank is planned, plus it's always been a popular model. Hornby's plan for initial releases is stuff they know are big sellers in OO. Hence starting with Mallard and Flying Scotsman classes, then Coronations and HSTs which makes sense. Also locos that cover a variety of eras/liveries and ones that are big as they're easier to design in TT where space is limited. The same with coaches, hence Mk1s, Pullmans and Mk3s then Gresleys though I think it would have made sense to have had those out before the LMS coaches which could have been released with the Coronations. Perhaps that was the intention but there were delays with production? I do think wagons are over priced though. This is one area where OO is better value as it's easy to get cheap wagons on the second hand market. I emailed Simon before he left suggesting it would be nice to have some wagon & coach packs so it was easy to build a rake. he replied it was under consideration, though whether that's changed since his departure I don't know. As for big four models it made sense to start with LNER for the above reasons. Then some LMS as Coronations and Black 5s sell well. Then some GWR locos (Castles, Praries and 5700s) with Southern being last after some BR standards (Britannia's and 9fs). I suspect another reason Southern will be last is many of their locos were relatively small which takes more design time in TT where space is limited. I expect merchant navy's will appear in a couple of years, but stuff like T9s/M7s etc will take longer. I was a bit surprised they chose the class 50 before the class 37 or 47 though, which I think would have made more sense as they're also steam era and have a long history and variety of liveries. A big advantage TT has for Hornby is they can tap into the European, US and Japanese markets where TT is already popular. The class 66 makes a lot of sense for this reason, as they can also produce them in a huge range of liveries, including some for European rail companies. I'd love to see a small tender engine, especially one that has a variety of liveries including some pre-grouping, e.g. The beautiful SECR livery or Caledonian blue. Hornby's main issue with TT is getting stuff out as they're reliant on third parties and production was delayed by Covid shut downs in Chinese factories and shortages of some materials. This also means they're competing with other manufacturers to get their orders done. Overall I think it was a good announcement. Great to see the J50 and also the BR green class 08. I was surprised they didn't choose that as one of the initial liveries as it would have provided a steam era shunter. Glad to see they've rectified that now. I'd like to see it in LMS maroon too. Also good to see more accessories such as signals and a level crossing. It would be good to see some more Peco TT track too.

It's definitely good to see some more smaller locos coming through for the range. I can see why they started with the larger pacifics though as in addition to their general popularity, part of the appeal of TT:120 does seem to be being able to run large express trains in a much smaller space. Haha I know! I was hoping to have this video out a lot sooner but life got in the way. We've pretty much got everything we need already stock wise for the layout. We have a Princess on order and the J50 is a welcome addition, although we won't have that for the exhibition in September, but I'm looking at some other options which may come to fruition. Problem with starting from scratch of course is they can't keep everyone happy. For those who want to model modern era, the likes of the class 37 and 66 getting potentially pushed further back is a problem, whereas those modelling steam have endless scope to complain about the lack of their favourite loco / livery. Having said that, personally I had no intetest in TT originally, but the HST set is looking very tempting given I should have at least six months to save up.

It's definitely a case of "you can't please everyone". For every comment I've seen saying they need a wider range there's another person complaining that it isn't focused enough. Personally I think Hornby have got it about right, especially as I suspect the wider general market for TT isn't so much railway enthusiasts but people who want a nice train set and probably won't look twice at running an HST alongside a A3. No GWR steam so will be hedging my bets for now. Everything seems to be LNER dominated. Getting tempted by N gauge Western Rambler set. Cheers Paul.

I think it makes sense initially as the range is still growing. This way, people who are interested in the LNER can start to build up a layout rather than the range being spread too thin. We do know they have the intention of doing both a Castle and a Pannier in the future though and I imagine it wouldn't be hard to redo the Mk1s in a chocolate & cream livery too but I imagine all that is a way off yet. The TT:120 range announcement was a bit like the Bachmann announcements. There was on the Hornby website a plan of when they would be releasing certain items be it a certain loco's and rolling stock from various regions or time periods and buildings/accessories, this one was phase 2 which did correctly state in the description I read that a steam 0-6-0 tank engine would be in the plan. If I can remember in the phase plan's GWR and LMS might be third or forth in the que and the last one in the phase plan's was looking like a mixed bag of accessories, loco's, rolling stock and buildings. The announcements were very interesting and that J50 is definitely a required loco in the range especially with the mass of private owner goods wagons from pre grouping era times. As you correctly said some LNER teaks would look good (hint hornby we have a rather fresh looking teak Saloon nearly restored at the SVR)

The second phase is the LMS Princess and Class 50 due in the next couple of months along with the Class 66 towards the end of the year. This announcement was a sort of bonus as Hornby shifts away from the Phases to revealing models when they're closer to release. I suspect the Phases were initially just a way for Hornby to show they had a long term plan for TT:120 but now that the scale seems to be doing well they can start to reveal some of the other projects they have up their sleeve. Thanks, constructive criticism is the way to go in my book or even just explaining why something is confusing or doesn't make sense. You never know, the manufacturers may be watching but they're less likely to take notice if you rant and rave like a mad man. Recently committed to N gauge and these announcements haven't made me regret that decision tbh. However, I do hope that TT120 is a success. If I ever want to step up to a larger gauge I would prefer TT as I've always found OO too bulkly.

Interesting to see this slight change of tack, but in light of some criticism I have seen written here and there, it seems like this could be a reaction to try and reel in the disenchanted! The HST and 37 are most interesting for me as I have held back from buying that era in recent years. This might well be the springboard I need to have what I would call an old ‘modern image’ layout from the 70s/80s at some point without having to find room for OO! 😉 Nothing flash, just a main line, a siding or two and some lovely old diesels 😎 Good luck with the new build, it will be great to see it develop. 👍🍀🍻

I think initially they had to lead with the Phases to show they were serious about the scale and had a long term plan. But at the same time we now know they've held some stuff back to work on in the shorter term which should keep us on our toes and build excitement for the range. Thanks for watching 😃

The range is the progression that was expected with a J50 with some "joined up" thinking. I have one eye on TT potentially (if the phases are stuck to). Give me a Black 5, Brit and 9F and you have a good start for a Settle-Carlisle layout, just need to be patient

Yeah they definitely needed to spread things out initially to capture interest from enough people but now it looks like they're focusing on the LNER region for steam stuff a bit more and the 70s/80s BR blue for some of the Diesel stuff. It sounds like the phases are going to become more long term than we initially though (especially if the Class 37 is 12-18 months away) so I don't think we'll see the previously mentioned Black 5 or 9F anytime soon. However I suspect there will be more announcements before then with locos and rolling stock that they're keeping under their hat currently. Thanks for watching 😃

The Q&A said the subsequent phases are still planned but in the 3 to 4 year timeframe with possible new items added based on customer preference I.e. if they think there is enough demand they made switch things around and add other products like they did with the J50

Yes having now had a chance to watch the Q&A properly that was my impression too. I guess they heard the calls for a small tank engine and looked at what was popular from the 00 gauge that they already had design files for. The Pecketts were probably too small to do easily but the J50 would have been perfect, especially given how it fits in with their other locos. Thanks for watching 😃

Great video - cant wait to see your tt layout! I was just watching your christmas locomotive building video from a couple of years ago, the one with the smoke generator - i was just wondering if you think itd work on dc, as i use dc not dcc?

Thanks, Episode 1 is out now for Members and it's had a really good reaction so far so I can't wait for everyone else to see it. I don't see why that smoke generator wouldn't work on DC. Obviously it would only function when the train was moving but I believe those Seuthe oil based generators were originally designed for DC analog anyway. Probably best to check that with them first though rather than relying on what a bloke on the internet says! Thanks for watching 😃

DMU sounds a good idea - in traditional 3mm TT it's not difficult to buy an old Triang 2 car set for the thick end of £300 so there could be a good demand and choice of the right prototype, eg Class 101/2, would cover a wide timescale including preservation lines. Not sure about 9F until there's a good range of freight stock.

Yeah given that it could fit in with the steam/diesel transition period quite well and would essentially be a complete train I do wonder why Hornby haven't considered it... maybe they have and we just don't know. The 9F is a long way off yet if the Class 37 is still 18 months away. But realistically all you need is a load of the 21t mineral wagons Hornby have coming out soon and a brakevan to make up a train for it to pull. Thanks for watching 😃

Most of the railwayana is either wooden replicas I've accumulated over the years (mostly from second hand shops!) or stuff I've laser cut myself. The tin signs are commercially available online or at heritage railways in the UK which is usually where I picked them up. Thanks for watching 😃

Thanks for the great vid! I think TT sounds good because it is new but in practise their main offering at least for now is OO. So I think you have more choice with rolling stock so makes sense to stick with OO from my standpoint. On another note some of the comments can occasionally be rude/poorly worded so I wouldn’t even bother replying as you can’t win with these “special” people lol. I think you’re great at what you do and your videos are fun and interesting 👍🏻

00 is always going to be the main focus, even Hornby themselves have said this. With a wide range spanning severals decades and multiple manufacturers, naturally there's going to be more choice than a scale that is only 18 months old in the UK. TT:120 is just another option for those who don't have the space for 00 - I suspect Hornby is aiming their range in particular at more of the train set market and people getting started in the hobby, rather than die hard enthusiasts. With regards to comments, I find it's best to reply to all of them - good and bad - otherwise you can end up in a bit of a self-congratulatory echo chamber. For those being more negative I'm interested in why they feel that way - a lot of the time they're just repeating the same old stuff without any actual thought, but if you just ignore them then nothing ever changes. I wish Hornby well with TT120. However I thought launching a new scale by a company that is struggling with profitability and so cash was not a wise move, because the sheer need for new tooling which would take many years to see a return to be able provide modelers with the coverage they have come to expect, was likely beyond them. I fear that this is becoming the reality and that they would have been better going for the better established N gauge.

But the fact that N Gauge is already established means that Hornby would always be playing catch up to Graham Farish, Dapol, Revolution, Kato, etc. With TT:120 they can lead the way in a brand new scale which has been successful in mainland Europe. Yes it will have cost them initially to get started but there's every indication that it's doing well for them given how much they've sold over the last 18 months. It's possible that this could start to turn Hornby's fortune around if the interest around TT:120 continues. Thanks for watching 😃

Not sure how accurate this is but I’ve heard that hornby are having financial issues and as such they may drop the whole TT:120 and stick with OO. Question is, would it be safe to start a TT board or stick with N gauge?

That's a gross over-simplification of the situation in my opinion. Hornby have had some financial difficulty although it's a bit up and down. They did well during Covid for example. TT:120 has also been a big success for them so far with demand being higher than they expected so I can't see them dropping at the moment. It'll have been a big investment to get off the ground so they'll want to see how it performs over a few years at least before pulling the plug. As for whether you should take up N or TT... it depends what kind of layout you want to build. Is what you want available for TT right now, or coming within the next few months? If you're the sort of person who will be happy with small collection of locos that don't all necessarily match you'll be fine with TT as there's enough out there already to build a decent layout should the scale disappear tomorrow... even though it probably won't. If though you want to build a model of a specific time or place then N Gauge has a lot more to choose from. Really it comes down to why are you considering TT in the first place? What benefits does it have for you over N or 00 - there are pros and cons for all three scales but which ones matter to you is a personal decision. Hope that helps and thanks for watching 😃

Yes I saw that right after filming this 😅 That's understandable but still quite a way off - I wonder if they have been working on other models from Phase 3&4 already that they've just not shown us or if this is the first. Either way it's good to see some progress and from the sound of things Hornby have more surprises like the J50 to come. Thanks for watching 👍

Fair enough, I can't see anyone wanting to switch to TT:120 on the back of this announcement alone. I do agree that they've made an effort to focus on the LNER before expanding out to other companies - hopefully we do indeed get some teak coaches in the future. Thanks for watching 😃

When I was 10 (60 years ago), my best friends BIG BROTHER had a layout of TT Gauge. At that time TT Gauge was the smallest gauge you could buy. How times have changed. I think you can now buy 'N' Gauge and 'Z' Gauge? BTW, I think TT Gauge stood for 'Table Top'?... So whatever Hornby announce.... it's not new is it? Ho Hum.....

I don't think Hornby have ever implied that TT:120 was new - a big part of the reason for doing it is because it's popular in Europe and the US. They're just helping to bring it to the UK market alongside PECO which is new. There is a distinction between the original TT you remember and TT:120 though, the former being the scale Triang released in the late 50s which died out with the popularity of N Gauge . TT:120 runs on the same 12mm gauge track but the scale is different at 1:120 rather than 1:101. Hope that helps and thanks for watching 😃

Odd that the 125 DCC sound set is £90 more than the non DCC set when the HM7000 decoder is only around £60..... 😂

As @HighFell has already pointed out the set comes with two HM7000 decoders pre-fitted into both the motor unit and the rear dummy unit too. So in actual fact you're saving £30 by buying the set instead of getting the decoders separately. Thanks for watching 😃

Do you know if the containers can be taken off the wagons or stuck on permanently

The containers are fully removable and interchangeable. They locate with small pegs. The wagons are the same TT:120 ones launched a couple of months ago through Arnold, and immediately sold out 😁

As @HighFell has already stated I believe they are removable. That would be pretty standard for modern container wagons like this - I think there are a few in 00 gauge which allow you to swap out the containers for different ones. Thanks for watching 😃

Generally it's the same worldwide - the 120 bit refers to the scale of 1:120. That said here in the UK we have a more niche scale that is just "TT" (also known as TT3 or 3mm) That is just slightly bigger than TT:120 and can sometimes cause confusion - but it's still between N and 00/H0. Am I correct in thinking the standard class 43 pack is £220 and the new trainer is £250? If so £30 for the track coaches and controllers is a mad saving

That is indeed correct. I didn’t really dive into the prices in this video since it only encourages the “too expensive” comments - but I do think this is a good example of how Hornby are trying to make the starter sets a really attractive option. Thanks for watching 😃

@@ThatModelRailwayGuyI’ve seen a few complain about the TT pricing, especially around the Pullman’s being £53 but the n-gauge equivalent is only £6 cheaper and the tankers are only £2 cheaper for almost twice the model, considering everything is new tooling I think that’s all really good pricing really

Maybe but no promises. I’ve done N Gauge stuff in the past personally and I still have most of it. The issue is space, I don’t have unlimited storage for all these layouts and the reason I built the modular layout was because I had no permanent space for a model railway. Thanks for watching 😃

I think I've mentioned in the past that I work as an actor and musician. Also as a filmmaker too - I've worked for a few different companies making videos and running RU-vid channels for them. I think the first one was in 2006 not long after RU-vid first started. Thanks for watching 👍

Hi "Guy". I understand Hornby's wish to attract more modellers to the TT:120 gauge with the Class 43 HST train set, but it would be nice to see some train *packs* for existing modellers. I understand that Hornby will (eventually) release motorised versions of these signals, so I will wait for them. I pre-ordered my Class 50 (I already have an HM7000 sound decoder ready to fit) last July, so would like to see it released real soon.

Isn't that what they did last year with some of the bundles they were selling? Or do you mean specifically the HST? The Class 50s are due mid-May I believe with the TXS fitted versions following a couple of weeks later. Thanks for watching 😃

Well still another reason not to go TT. When they start doing Southern small engines I might change my mind. Still the signals look interesting maybe convertible to 009.

It wouldn't be worth it as it would be such a small market. The vast majority of people wouldn't switch to H0 simply because of the wide range and support there is for 00 in the UK. Most people seem to be happy with 00, those who aren't tend to go for P4 finescale rather than going to H0. In fact some manufacturers are now choosing to make their models more easily adaptable to P4 so if anything I'd expect that to catch on across the wider hobby first. Thanks for watching 😃

Lima tried it many years ago and it didn't sell. IIRC you can now buy a H0 Marklin Flying Scotsman - for £600...

My general impression is that they're not aiming it at die-hard railway enthusiasts but more at those who fancy a train set. Having launched the scale with a variety of different models as a bit of a catch-all, they're now trying to hone in on specific areas, like the LNER with the J50 and the modern era with the Container wagons for the 66. That's my understanding at least... if my predictions in this video are anything to go by I'm wildly off most of the time 😅 Thanks for watching 👍

i personally think that it's all too slow, there isn't enough choice ( yet) for modellers who, in both 2 and 4 mm scales are now used to having a vast range of models and eras to choose from, as yet in TT 120, the whole range is so small and restricted that it isn't a choice for those with little patience. are they prepared and willing to wait for, what are hoped for models to appear? You see so many posts with exited enthusiasts wanting a this, or that ...in this livery or that region...sometimes such niche models, yet to be produced in the other scales. I feel that in the next couple of years, TT 120 with either begin to prosper, albeit slowly, or simply wither and die, maybe along with it's maker(s) as hope and interest fades away. As ever, only time will tell.

It's definitely going to be slow as rolling out a whole new scale isn't the sort of thing that is done overnight. But on the flip side, in the last couple of years have any single manufacturer released as many locos and rolling stock items in any scale as Hornby have for TT:120? We currently have 5 locos, 2 more due in the next couple of months and another 2 due before the end of the year. It's certainly not a scale for those who want to model a particular time/place/era but I suspect the general audience for TT is a much more casual modeller who doesn't really care about that sort of thing anyway. Personally can't see TT:120 going anywhere anytime soon, there's every indication that it's been a success for Hornby and it's doing what it needs to do to not only survive but thrive. TT needs Heljian yo come back and do Diesels. 21, 22, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 33, 35 cpuld all be done this decade. Hornby wont get to these im the next 5 years

Heljan had every opportunity to get involved with TT but back out as soon as they saw how far along Hornby were. I seem to remember the Class 31 announcement was just their O Gauge CAD. But I agree, it would be great to have other manufacturers who are serious about TT get involved. Thanks for watching 😃

They definitely pulled out incredibly quickly. I suspect it was less to do with duplication and more the fact that Heljan realised Hornby had put a lot of time and effort into the scale already when they had just released a CAD of their existing O gauge Class 31. TT:120 was really good for Heljan when they were the biggest player but as soon as Hornby announced their ambitions, Heljan's attempt looked a bit feeble in comparison. I suspect it was more of a side project them anyway and once they realised they couldn't match up to Hornby's range it was easier to pull out than be shown up. That's my thinking anyway though personally I would have loved them to have stayed in the scale and I think Hornby would have been fine with it too. Thanks for watching 😃

Kinda makes sense at this point as a single GWR model probably wouldn't be much use. It looks like they're trying to focus on LNER side of things for the moment but there is a Castle and a Pannier planned for the future. Thanks for watching 😃

I like these vids. I’m a subscriber. But why waste 7 mins telling us your predictions then the actual announcements in the same vid. As important as you are, do your predictions really matter? Thank heavens for the fast forward slider.

No of course it doesn't matter, that's why I put the chapter markers into the video for those who do want to skip to the actual announcement. But by extension, why not just watch the official announcement video instead? People watch these videos because they want to see the individuals take on what's being revealed. For my videos in particular, the premise has always been that I'm taking my very first look at everything so you're getting my initial reaction. Making some predictions first gives people an idea of where I think the hobby might be headed and it gives us all an opportunity to point and laugh when I'm horrifically off the mark. Oohh, was that your toes I stepped on? I’ve had a sleepless night, it’s 4 in the morning over here and the prediction were very dull. I’m a cynic, and if predictions appear in same vid as announcements then suspicion of already seen then before predictions creep into my evil mind so you look good. Now don’t get upset, if you did the predicts. a couple of days early my mind wouldn’t be so evil, and those who are interested can watch. And I did enjoy your comments on the releases.
