At the end of November 2022 I found myself in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales. Having not solo wild camped for quite some time, I decided to load my backpack with camera gear and camping supplies, and head off up a hill in search of a chilly overnight adventure...

Beau Miles is living proof that you don't need to venture far to find adventure. Loved the new style video.

What a coincidence, just while watching this video the next browser tab waiting is Beau Miles' 4th day of Christmas Newness. And a very nice bothy Ed found there.

I wonder, when I see these comments, if it's all coincidence or if it's just a product of The Algorithm that folks tend to watch a lot of the same channels.

I've been subscribed to Beau Miles for 4 or more years now. I think it's amazing, but not surprising how his channel has "blown up". Both Beau and Ed have earnt and deserve their views.

Sometimes the best stories come from the local stuf/semi-local short trips as you think you know what is needed for the weather in the area for that short time frame but turns out you come barely prepared for the trip.

Hey Ed it's good to see you again. Quick tip with that stove if I may, it's best to shut the valve near the gas bottle first. I like to shut it when my meal is almost ready, the flame will keep on burning for a moment and when it stops you know the line is completely empty of gas. That makes for a much cleaner stove with less gunk blocking the tiny hole. Cheers to all of your adventures !
@JessicaKStark
@JessicaKStark Год назад
I've got what I think is a newer model of white gas stove and it doesn't even have a valve where the fuel line goes to the stove. just the one on the bottle pump/regulator.

That was hilarious, I was already typing, asking you if you never got problems with clogged nozzles when priming the stove with pure gasoline, when it was already clocked up🤣 I found two ways to get around this issue: 1. Whenever I dont fly I have a small 30ml bottle of straight ethanol to prime, that lasts two weeks easily and burns much cleaner then gasoline, allowing me to only turn the gasline on when it is fully evaporated in the heater pipe. 2. Whenever I fly and cannot bring ethanol I have a small brass lid (mine is a 9mm case with a handle on it) that I put over the nozzle when priming. Squirt some gas, put the lid over the nozzle and light the gasoline around the nozzle. That was the flame does not reach the nozzle and the residue wont clock it up. When the stove is hot I remove the lid and turn on the gasoline. Maybe that works for you as well ;)

Ed, I've been watching your channel since you crossed China - good stuff! Unrelated to the video, during my thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail, I ran into a cyclist who was nearing completion of his journey from California to NYC. We talked for a while about our respective trips, and I asked him if he had seen any Ed Pratt videos. Turns out, one of the biggest influences in his coast-to-coast journey was your videos! So, good on you mate! Also, any plans to go on any big thru-hikes? There are probably too many videos on AT thru-hikes on RU-vid, but perhaps you could give one of the other crazy-long trails a shot.

Gotta love a bothy! Have you ever considered using a Trangia or other alcohol stove, Ed? They're much slower than a gas stove or your petrol stove, but they're completely silent. The more gentle way of cooking coupled with the lack of noise is pretty zen - I think you'd dig it! The classic Trangia really is the best in terms of function, but it's a bit bulky. There are a lot of third party windshields and such that are a bit more "ultralight." Great microadventure, Ed. Looks like you had a really enjoyable overnighter!

That is how I feel with a specific grass in my area, a type of fluff grass that has this cotton wood/milkweed like seed thing and you know these areas are going to hold water when we had rain/snow melting more recently in the area. Also areas that have lots of Cottonwood trees you know might get wet easier/stay wet easier then most too. Then look at places that have more exposed dirt/soil that nothing can grow on and is not a dirt/unimproved trail, this type of stuff on my area can hold more water/snow melt longer then the rest of the soil.
