Badd Medicine here and its Saltburn reaction time
Saltburn is one of the most baffling movies of the year, with a lot of mixed messaging about its themes of wealth, obsession, and the class divide. Set in 2000s England, Saltburn stars Barry Keoghan as Oliver Quick, a middle-class Oxford student, and Jacob Elordi as the object of his desire, Felix Catton, a rich kid who invites Oliver to stay at his family’s enormous estate, the eponymous Saltburn over the summer break. Oliver got into Oxford due to his hard work and determination; Felix got in due to his family’s absurd riches and academic connections. And from there the story gets wild. The film stars, Barry Keoghan, Jacob Elordi, Rosamund Pike, Richard E. Grant, Alison Oliver, and Archie Madekwe.

I think the story was disappointing and a worse version of The talented Mr Ripley but I still enjoyed it because of the humor, the dialogue and the characters. They nailed that British upper class way of speaking and acting. My biggest dislike was the ending showing Oliver planning it all out. I think it would be more interesting if he became corrupt and worse as he spent time with them rather than him being a psychopath. Feels kinda like a cliche and an insult to the viewers intellegence to do a reveal like that. Amazing soundtrack and cinematography though! Loved the aspect ratio and the old vibes, as a European the setting and the music gave me such nostalgia.

just a quick correction; compulsive lying wouldn’t be what oliver does, bc that’s lying for the sake of lying with little reasoning behind it outside of the thrill of not being honest or sheer habit. what ollie did was lie to manipulate felix, which wouldn’t be being a compulsive liar.

This movie is an interesting case study of art. I've seen a ton of people see it, and people seem to either love it and how its executed, or they think its a terrible shock value movie. I respect both opinions, but i actually loved this movie. I didn't see the end as an intended twist but a slow build of revealing more and more how twisted the character really is. To me, it was less of a shocking twist but more building tension to see how far the movie will go by the end. The script, the cinematography, and the acting were all great. Like i said, there seems to be a huge divide about this movie, and there are people who really loved it, and that's why people want to see the reactions to this movie. To each their own, and i loved seeing your guys' reaction, can't wait for the next one!

I’m surprised how much people take why Ollie says at face value. He’s a liar. I don’t believe he planned and waited for 16 years. He’s an opportunist. He probably saw the obit and jumped back in. He wants the audience to think he’s clever and planned it all but he’s telling us he did that stuff. I think he did love Felix and he would have happily stayed as part of the family if given the chance.
@BrilliantDemise
@BrilliantDemise 3 месяца назад
This. There's plenty of clues Ollie was perfectly comfortable on his probable millions he was paid off with, but when he saw the obit he saw an opening and took the opportunity to stalk Elspeth and force a run in. Additionally, I think there is a misunderstanding about his motivation here. It is not that he wants the wealth or Saltburn itself - it's that he wants to *take* it from these people he hates. The taking is the motivation for him.

i think it's really interesting how people either absolutely love this movie or absolutely hate it, and from what i've seen it mostly boils down to their perception of what the movie really was or what it was trying to achieve. Most people who hate it seem to be of the opinion it's cheap shock value that is trying to push the twist ending of "he planned to get the estate all along" while attempting to be "artsy" over actual substance, whereas I know plenty of people who are in love with this movie and will rewatch it over and over just to pick up on the huge amounts foreshadowing and symbolism that you rarely catch on the first watch, and generally see it more as a character study and a story of how obsession can be all consuming, and that Oliver's obsession with Felix led him to seeing the estate (and the rest of oliver' family) as an extension of Felix, and that since he couldn't have felix, he would have Saltburn. Example: the grave scene - very easy to see this as a cheap shock value gross-out scene, but also very interesting to think of it as a very raw depiction of just how far someone could go with obsession and desire

The thing about this movie that I love is even after the "Bad Guy monologue" explaining the entire scheme, I didn't believe him. He is a liar and a manipulator, and I feel like at multiple point's he is even lying to himself. About how he felt and what he wanted. If this was a well thought out scheme, and was planned, why include a sudden 16 year hiatus in the middle of the plan? Unless he truly didn't expect the dad to Push him away. He had hoped he had crawled under his skin enough, but even after insisting, he noticed the father was not going to accept him. He needed more time. But Felix found out he was lying, so he needed to kill him. Then after, when he tried to go rekindle the relationship with the sister, she calls him out, so that bridge is also burned, and she needed to go. He wasn't some mastermind, he fucked up multiple times.

Ok, so Oliver is an unreliable narrator. He didn’t originally plan to take over and do what he did. His plan was to get close to Felix. He did love Felix and it wasn’t until he was completely rejected by Felix that he decided if he can’t be with Felix he’ll take everything he has. He takes Saltburn burn because it’s his only way of being with Felix forever. I believe the director pretty much validated this.

@PowerDiva
@PowerDiva 3 месяца назад
People tend to focus on the shock factor of this film, they don't always see that each of those shocking scenes had a purpose. It was a slow reveal of Oliver's true character. The bathtub scene we saw his obsession with Felix. Weird, but relatively harmless. Then the scene with Venetia, him lying about it and his conversation with Elsbeth... we start to see him stirring the pot and being a manipulator. That's when we start to wonder what his game is, until he frames Farleigh and we realize it's more than just causing drama. By the time we get to the grave scene, we've come to realize he's full-on psychotic. Something's wrong upstairs. Oliver was smart, but he was also a sociopath which is a dangerous combination. Lying came easily but emotions did not. That's why he was self-estranged from his loving family and it's why he couldn't handle his intense feelings for Felix. Once he was rejected after Felix caught onto his game... it was no longer about being with him, but rather becoming him and having his life for himself.

I think, while the initial response of disgust by a lot of people is valid, the beauty of the discomfort gets lost. The film seems to be a huge commentary on class inequality as well as the taboo topic of kink and sex as a transactional/manipulation tactic and psychology as a whole, while also alluding to classic themes like greek mythology's Theseus and the Minotaur. The party scene with ollie wearing the horns shows that in a way, ollie is the minotaur that the people surrounding him become "lost" with, but also the comments throughout the film of "people get lost in saltburn" correlates as well as the statue in the middle of the maze modeled after the classic beast. theres also an abundance of details that add to the overall aesthetic of it, like the scene at the dinner table where venetia is explaining the tale of a doppleganger being seen before someone dies, and felix walks right by the window, foreshadowing his future. all of this aside, the overall composition, acting, setting, and editing makes this film feel like a classic- its not really like any other film seen before, and I think it has opened the door for us to go from the pattern of silly, high budget yet low quality films back to true, classic cinema. theres a lot of directing choices that aren't very popular, making this film even more of a classic. fun facts; the director (emerald fennel) played midge in the barbie movie, oliver (barry keoghan) was in the marvel movie eternals and also improvised the grave scene, and farleigh's hair was inspired by corbin bleu in high school musical :D! also, there was actually a scene where felix and oliver kiss but it was cut :c

any story about gay obsession is gonna appeal to me tbh lmao but this is one of my fave recent movies in a while! it was beautifully done and I think it can exist as a good character study on oliver quick. the biggest misconception I see is that this is an ‘eat the rich’ story (no pun intended), but considering that’s based in OLIVER’S perspective of what happened, I don’t think it’s accurate at all. he’s an unreliable narrator, esp when he’s monologuing like a fuckin supervillain

It’s so irritating when people call this an “eat the rich” movie lol. To explain it about obsessive behavior. Oliver is not a reliable narrator so him telling this story is questionable. That’s for reacting guys, love your videos 😊 Just want to add a few things - Primarily that it’s a movie about obsession, not wealth. I will probably explain this poorly, but there’s a lot of notes about class in the plot that I think get missed by folks who aren’t aware of the layers of the uk class system. (Not that the movie itself is a class commentary, but there are elements that make things make more sense in my opinion) Oliver will never be able to obtain their status, even after inheriting the estate he won’t be seen as an equal by his peers - bare in mind that most of them descend from royalty. It’s impossible to work hard and earn that life, you have to be born into it. Inheriting it is the closest he can possibly get. Fairleigh and Pamela are examples of that, no money but still have the status from their bloodline. The scenes with the bath and the period blood for example are kind of a metaphor of him trying to consume their bloodline. The end of the grave scene was improv by Barry, showing the lengths of Oliver’s obsession. Those scenes are really not just there for shock value (I didn’t actually find it that shocking at all 😅) The ‘pet’ comments I don’t think were intended as a romantic/sexual comment, it was about Felix adopting people who are struggling because it makes him more interesting. (See the scene where Oliver first tells Felix about his family and Felix leans in and tells Oliver to tell him how bad it was) They’re bored, have no adversity, and see Oliver as entertainment/someone to adore them. I’ve encountered so many wealthy people cosplaying poor to seem interesting, particularly at university - It’s extremely common. Elspeth references this song by the lake, which is about exactly that. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lkpLbEM06qE.htmlsi=TPSwojDOPn7gQ66R When they have the first dinner at uni and the other guy says everyone else already knows each other - that’s because most of them would have went to private school together, or are connecting over their families. Although Oliver is actually reasonably well off, he doesn’t have those connections.

One of my podcasts spoke about class/wealth in the UK and it's different from the US. In the US you can become a millionaire and earn your "way into" the rich circles. But they said in the UK if you aren't born into it then it's "new money" and it's not the same, which is what all those comments are about Ollie being on scholarship, they look down on it. I think Felix viewed Ollie like a pet project and once Ollie "didn't fit" into Felix's ideal anymore, he wanted Ollie out. YES Ollie lied about his father bc he was desperate to get back into Felix's' aura and that was only bc Felix was annoyed with him, it wasn't even about anything major. I never really thought Felix was a good friend bc it was never about Oliver, it was still all about what Oliver could do for Felix or how he made Felix feel. And Felix speaking to Olivers mom and "surprising" him with a trip there wasn't being a good friend imo. (Granted it's all a lie but we don't know this at the time) but Oliver told him how horrible his life was and that he didn't want to go there and Felix just makes the decision for him, to force him to deal with it before he's ready? What if it had all been true? How traumatizing for Oliver it could've been and Felix thinks he could just fix all of it? Neither of them were a good friend to anyone. And none of the family would've have actually liked Oliver if he'd been himself. He knew that so he figured out what each of them wanted and gave it to them. This movie has so many layers it's crazy.

Watched Saltburn in a small, packed theater. It was a real bonding experience for everyone. I've never heard so many audible F-bombs dropped from an audience before, as well as groans and "oh no's" when people realized what they were about to witness 😂 I thought the cinematography was beautiful and the acting was great, but I thought the story itself was very uneven and couldn't really ever figure out what it wanted to be or what the overlying message was going to be. It felt like there were a lot of different ideas, but none of them were fully realized. It's been fun seeing others reactions to it though! If you're still taking suggestions, I'd like to nominate 'Bottoms' (also from last year). It's a comedy about a pair of "gay, ugly, and untalented" seniors who start a fight club to impress their cheerleader crushes. Marshawn Lynch is their teacher. I also saw it in theaters with a wide range of demographics in the audience, and we all had a great time!

The film's best subplot leads nowhere. There is a fantasy-horror subplot. - Butler says: "People get lost at Saltburn" - Venitia says: "A full moon, do you know what that means? We all lose our minds" (werewolves?) - Oliver says: "Do you know... I'm a vampire" (vampire) - Venitia during breakfast tells the story of a Doppelganger walking outside the window. || And we see Felix's Doppelganger outside the window (Doppelganger) - There's also a Minotaur at the center of the labyrinth, which ties back to what the Butler said.

Oh dang. I actually enjoyed it. I think the big question was, was Oliver in love with Fellix? His dialogue says no but a lot of his actions contradict this. I think he started off crushing on him and obsessed with him. He wanted to get in his friend group, lied again when Fellix pulled away. I think throughout the film he kept wanting more from Fellix and felt rejected when he couldn’t get him romantically and then became obsessed with becoming him and living his life. His love kept becoming a dark obsession. To me I got a lot of YOU/Talented Mr. Ripley/Cruel Intentions vibes and dug it. Also the second hand embarrassment of when Fellix finds out Oliver is a complete lie, hit me like a truck.

Smart of him not to just off all of the family then and there himself, it would have been real suspicious, wouldn't it? If you have a goal you stick to it no matter how long it takes. What I found very interesting about Saltburn is that it's a movie with very little gore, nudity or explicit sex scenes and yet it's so disturbing, even more so than movies that are much heavier with these elements. It's a psychological movie. It's not even about the twists and turns, the plot is pretty obvious, but trying to understand the mindset of the characters, and why they do what they do, that's what's fascinating to me. And the foreshadowing for how each character would die, all of the references to other classic films and literature, so much symbolism in each shot, in each line, in each look.... I don't know, I guess some people just don't "get" it, but this movie was a masterpiece, and it's really sad to see people only taking away from it that it was "shock value and had zero plot." This movie is only a masterpiece if you've never seen anything other than a hallmark film before, it's certainly derivative and worse than all of it's references. It's definitely not all shock value, but the plot is contrived and the characters are emptier versions of all of Emerald Fennell's inspirations. All the actors did the best they could with the script but Jacob Elordi is no Dickie Greenleaf and Barry Keoghan makes for an incredibly untalented Mrs Ripley. This movie piques my interest, but I dunno.... Hollywood has been missing a lot these last few years. I cant stand movies just for the sake of making a buck. Most of these movies don't mean anything anymore - just pushing an unwanted narrative or shocking and violent for no reason.

The bathtub and grave scenes were a bit much for me personally...and I watch a lot of wierd stuff... 💜

Bathtub scene got me because I already find bathtubs to be really gross. So him getting up close and personal with the drain had me grossed out, but I don't think it was quite for the same reason as most other people. Also, when the whole bathroom scene played out, I turned to my friend and was like, "That is not water soluble. I just need people to know it's not water soluble and it can build up and damage your pipes." She was like, "I don't think that's supposed to be the takeaway here!" 😂 ETA: That's technically not true, but it didn't stop my college maintenance team from putting up signs about it in dorms back when I was in college. 😅

I think the movie rated on just its cinematic and acting and foreshadowing deserves like an 4.5. But I get their rating tho
