Most of the people who talked like that (typical NYC accent you hear in black & white films and gangster films) moved out of NYC in the 60s, 70s, & 80s when the city was in disarray and people who could afford to moved out. Most of them settled in the suburbs of the “tri-state area” (NJ, NY, & CT). Hence why places like New Jersey and Long Island have a lot of Italian American and Irish American diaspora. For example my Mom’s side of the family was an old NYC family with strong roots in SoHo & Brooklyn. In the 1960s the city seized their entire block via “eminent domain” and they moved to LI then NJ. People refer to it as “white flight” but a lot of it was also forced relocation. That combined with ever increasing costs of living and a vast insurgence of people moving in and gentrifying neighborhoods since the late 90s is why NYC doesn’t have a lot of “old school New Yorkers” anymore and sounds and feels more and more just like a global city.

Nah it's just that a lot of people from Manhattan don't have New York accents. Many people from the other boroughs have real accents. It's not just white people too

Well a-lot of people are ignorant and believe the stereotypes that come out of Hollywood. They don’t differentiate movies and Tv shows from real life.

You nailed it, Lukas. We also have Stanford, Cal Tech (Jet Propulsion Lab), Silicon Valley, but World Friends goes for stereotypes for entertainment purposes....but they are trying to Capture Eyeballs & Ears, so we cannot blame them for that.

What kills me is that most people who say "valley girl" have never been to "the valley", have no idea where it is or what it's like, don't know where the term came from and how outdated it is lol.

@@srose1088 That movie is over 40 years old and that term is even older, so yeah it's very outdated, and sounds very passé to native Angelinos and other Californians who are very familiar with the greater L.A. area including "The Valley".

There's a book by Colin Woodard called The 11 American Nations that talks about the cultural suprastates that retain elements of the culture that initially colonized it. The NY/NJ/Connecticut area is called New Amsterdam and still retains some Dutchness to their culture.

There were the French, Spanish, British, Dutch, Portuguese... or are we going longer than "originally" with German and Sweden? Or are we going further back with Leif Erikson & Greenland, New Foundland, etc. I thought NYC was New Amsterdam and the area was New Netherlands, Nieuw Nederland. Like how Australia was Nieuw Holland, and New Zealand = Nieuw Zeeland. But Holland and Zealand are provinces of the Netherlands.

@@schiffelers3944 just a standard new york accent originally from Brooklyn (yea, one of the thickest NY accents lol). For example, I don't say coffee the way many people think we do but I do notice that I pronounce "for sure" like "four shore" while Californians might say "fur shur" . Same thing with the words: law (lo-aww), office (ohawwfice), aunt (ont), and caught (coh-awwt).

It's all in the family.😅

Honestly coming from someone who lived in Florida for 14 years, it is probably one of the only places on earth I can think of were all the stereotypes about it, are 100% true. You basically described Florida to a tea. Only thing you forgot was Disney, and Lots of New Yorkers moving down here.

Ohhhh yeah. I’m Chinese American so I hear most of it from friends. But yeah there’s a ton of them. Some are fine, others are… not very nice

I experienced Hong Kong and I saw how the Cantonese is very different. When I was at the metro cinema in Kwai Fung MTR Cinema I was stunned hearing mandarin with subsitiles in EN and traditional Chinese meanwhile the audience were mostly young HK kids and a few uncles. It was funny because the language made me think... am I in China or Singapore?

As a Californian, I agree...you need a certain darkness to pull off effective comedy. New Yorkers are a bit more cynical than other Americans, and usually have a great sense of humor.

True. I was in a Mennonite store recently in Southern Iowa, and this guy was carrying out a family meeting in the back of the store speaking Pennsylvania Dutch.

Pretty much the entire Southeast are sir ma’am states and not all were ever part of British colonies. New England is not like that and were British colonies.

Buffalo NY doesn't have a New Yawkah accent. Their accent is related to Inland Northern group of accents. Only NYC North Jersey have that accent upstate NY doesn't.

Ian definitely has an accent. We all do. That's how accents work. Some people just sound different more similarly than others.

Wow, this is completely wrong The US can not be compared to any European Country. The US by itself is larger than all of Europe combined. Also, our population is made up of immigrants from every country that exists in the world. We don't have a majority ethnic group or official language here. You can take just one of our 50 states for example California for comparison. California by itself is larger than any country in Europe and has more diversity than any country in Europe. The economy of California alone is on par with Germany's economy. There is no comparison to be made between Europe and the US.

I see your point but the US diversity isn’t purely geographical. We have a history of slavery then an era forced legal segregation that didn’t end that long ago. You will find families that have lived in the same city for 6-8 generations and who are culturally different and might know very little about one another.

Like what trend or cultural significance came from those and spread to other states? Like take music for example, hip hop is all over but the genre and fashion from hip hop originated from NYC. If New Yorkers decide tight pants are cool, soon the rest of US will follow. And we all know how Hollywood and Silicon Valley effects how people live not only in US but the rest of the world. If you been to NYC, you might be surprised how many landmarks look familiar because you seen it before on tv or movies. Whereas for Houston or Dallas or San Antonio, most Americans don’t know what these cities look like but a generic city. TX is sort of a mid west, southern hybrid but besides Mexican food what other cultural impact does it have on the other 49 states? They are known for football but football was originally a north eastern sport. They are very proud of Whataburger and buc-e but outside of TX, not many are aware of their popularity. Like Tim Horton’s for Canadians. FL to me maybe a up and coming state. I think more people are moving there especially from NY, along with Texas many people and companies are moving there. My opinion is TX, FL, GA, MA, MI are possibly second tier in cultural significance.

You are pretty much comparing cities not states. NYC and Los Angeles aka Hollywood neither of which reflect most of the country culturally. Also IMO Florida and Texas are very well known internationally. Florida is associated with Disney.

Yes, but the vast majority (like 99.999999%) of Spanish speakers in California are *recent* immigrants from Mexico and Central America, and their children, not the descendants from centuries past. After a few generations, immigrant families switch to English.
