Bunjie (The Original Bunjie, The O.B.) is my 2010 Excalibur Axiom that got me hooked on crossbow hunting. This was my "one gun" for more than a decade and Bunjie's reliability is the reason I ONLY hunt with a crossbow. After killing dozens of deer, hogs, squirrels, woodchucks, and even a bear, Bunjie is now semi-retired, but still gets out every year and even killed two deer 2023--and a woodchuck at 81 yards!
Bunjie, Jr., is my daughter Genevieve's crossbow, an Excalibur Micro Suppressor 355. This crossbow was also a much appreciated gift from a Friend of Bunjie, and it changed Death by Bunjie forever by inspiring Genevieve to become a part of our story as a second-generation crossbow hunter, and it also convinced me there is a benefit to a newer, faster crossbow back in 2020 when I began the Quest for a Successor to Bunjie.

My little brother (age 58) has been bowhunting since age 12. His first compound (Browning with a wood riser) snapped in half. His second bow (Xi) was stolen from his car over 20 years ago. He used the insurance money to buy his current Hoyt. He uses a Lewis & Lewis Pro Injector release he bought back in the late 1970s, & I don't think he has ever switched from using NAP Thunderheads. If you bought up buying a new bow, he would just look at you funny & ask why? He pays cash when buying a new pickup truck. His house is paid off. It's not about money. He is just content with what he has. He harvests nice bucks just like everyone else. I'm not much different. Mathews taught me how to ignore marketing hype decades ago. I shot a Mathews Signature for 17 seasons (1996-2012). I dropped to a 60 pound Prime Impact bow in 2013 (also switched over to things like a drop away rest, D-loop, & whatever. If I bought the same brand bow today, the specs would be almost identical. I don''t see myself buying another new compound in my lifetime. I have a brand new Swat X1 in a box to back me up some day, but I find shooting a compound bow way more enjoyable. I like ending my day/evening taking a few shots. I never touch a rangefinder, & I shoot unknown distances with a single fixed vertical pin (HHA Optimizer Cadet for youth) all summer long. My brother has the same sight on his old bow. I will not use multiple pins or a movable pin sight. I instinctively know what shot I can make. Passing on a bad shot feels better than taking one! I enjoyed this clip! I'm 61 years old. Started bow hunting with a recurve. Shot compounds up until I got hurt and couldn't draw it anymore. At that same time my state opened the archery season to.include cross bows it's allowed me to stay in the woods and the sport I love. To many haters out there.

Love shooting compound, in the backyard. I'm active while shooting. But when I sit in the tree, or on the ground for that matter, being older, multi, mega injuries, found I had a really bad giddy up, so to speak, when pulling back on a live animal. I realized I owe that animal way more, then I was physically able to offer them. To make a clean kil that is. So I stopped bow hunting for a while. As a stated before, my kids got me a crossbow, thankfully. Got me back into what I love. Love my compound, my body doesn't love shooting it after being in the cold for so long. Injuries don't help. So I switched. Get my share of s*** from people that don't love crossbows. But they ain't living in my body, so they can kiss my pretty rear end. I have two crossbows, love them both. Both different, but extremely accurate. Or I wouldn't take them in the field. But they get me in the field, fully confident, doing what I love. I'd rather shoot my compound, Life doesn't allow me to do that at this point. Maybe, never again. But I'm okay with that. Hopefully, people that shoot compounds will accept all of us that shoot crossbows, without giving us some type of cross-eyed look. We love hunting as much as they do. For whatever reason, we shoot a crossbow. A cheaper crossbow or big buck crossbow, we're into hunting as much they are. For all the same reasons, loving every minute of it. Hopefully someday soon, we all realize we're into the same sport, loving what we do, accepting the fact, that all of us that love our sport, no matter what we shoot, are stronger together, and by staying together, we can keep our sport alive, and have the input/influence on it we all desire. Strength and numbers my friends. Sooner we realize that, better chance we have on keeping the sport we all love moving forward. And keeping it the best it can be, for the next generation and beyond.😮😂😏

People want to scream at everyone that the way they hunt or fish is better than the way someone else does, they do it the "pure" way or whatever. It's ridiculous that anyone cares about any of that stuff. Hunting isn't suppose to be a competition with anyone but you and the animal. Same with fishing, that's why I hate tournaments.

I moved from compound TO crossbow because crossbow wasn't legal in Georgia except for handicapped hunters. But once they became legal for all, I was sold on them at that point. One day, hopefully, I'll have a nice swat set up along with a great range finding scope like your set up Rich. For now my Barnett is going to be fun and great for my archery season. Rich, can you talk about broadheads? I'm a 4 blade 1.25" diameter one piece broadhead guy. I like these for the price and being able to get them SUPER sharp. Especially budget is what is keeping me from moving to another type. Also, can you talk about the "gadgets" that are so prevalent in crossbow? I finally was delivered the "String tracker" system that I promised you last year. I'll be sending that out soon to you to try.

I bow hunted rabbits in my youth with a 28# recurve, bowhunted deer with compound for 40 years. I said I would quit hunting before I would buy a crossbow. Then I turned 65 years old with a bad shoulder. I bought my first crossbow and I’m still hunting at 67

About 3 years ago I was relatively new to crossbow hunting and just started watching this channel. There was something Rich said that has really stuck with me. It was to the effect of Don't let your buddies at work, family members, or people online dictate what you hunt and how you hunt. Let the laws and your own moral compass dictate it. I think the topic was about taking a doe rather than waiting for bucks only, but it applies to so much more. With that being said crossbows are legal in my state, so compound bow hunters can respectfully think whatever they would like without effect. I understand the tradition and practice required for compound bows, but either way it's a 40 yard shot. It's the same hunt. When the hunt is over and it's time to harvest, nobody could ever argue that a compound is anywhere near as ethical for the animal.

In addition to firearms, knives, tomahawks, swords I started out with .40 cal blowguns as well as traditional and compound bows back in the early 1980s. I have a lot of Jennings and Bear Archery bows as well as one Bowtech Carbon Zion bow. Yes, I even have Fred Bear models. In the last few years I have since added many modern high powered crossbows. I have mini pistol crossbows (William Tell Archery Strikers both forward 120# and reverse limb 150#). I have standard full size crossbows....Ravin, Mission, Excalibur, Ten Point, Wicked Ridge, CenterPoint, Barnett, Killer Instinct etc etc. I also got into Cold Steel and Black Rhino .625 big bore blowguns and added them to my already existing arsenal. Around the same time I got into modern high powered adult air guns both springers and PCPs in .177, .22 and .25 caliber.....Benjamin, RWS/Diana, Weihrauch, Beeman, Air Venturi, Reximex. The last 4 months or so I have been buying up and getting into black powder cap and ball percussion revolvers....Pietta and Uberti mostly. I'm very fond of the 1858 New Army .44s, 1847 Colt Walker .44s, 1851 .44s, 1860 Army .44s and a 1863 .31 cal Pocket Pistol. I don't put all my eggs in one basket and try to cover all angles.

My latest crossbow I purchased was a preowned "never shot" Wicked Ridge Invader 400 with the crank from a local shop. They didn't know what they had and I asked "how much cash right here and now". They told me $400 OTD and I couldn't get my money out fast enough. When I told them (local pawn shop) that it had never been shot and they are near $600 new he said I figured "you" (meaning me) would know what it was and buy it. 😄

So many coumpound bow guys have an issue with crossbows which I have always found humorous. Like so many things now a days if you don't agree just don't shoot it or keep scrolling. Deer hunters are a very territorial group and people really don't want more people in the woods. I used to shoot a compound and really miss it but shoulder issues prevent me from drawing 60 lbs. So I can coverted and have never looked back. The important thing is let people enjoy being out an experience what nature has to offer.

I started shooting a recurve bow when I was ten years old and fell in love with archery and in my journey I ve shot ,hunted and competed in all facets of archery including crossbows Wich I always loved and I still remember when Pennsylvania made hunting with crossbows legal! That was one of my happiest days and since that year I've owned ten different crossbows and I still shoot both my Tenpoint crossbow and my PSE compound vertical bow regularly today and get equal enthusiasm using both in hunting and target shooting . I can shoot both very accurately out to 75 yards but I would NEVER shoot an animal at that distance. I won't shoot with either at wild game past 40 yards and that's even pushing it. So far the longest distance I've harvested a deer is 25 yards and closer. I like to wait until I see the whites of their eyes before I release my arrow.

I love shooting a compound bow, but after my shoulder surgery and subsequent constant pain in my shoulder, I switched to a crossbow. I picked up a TP Venom X for the silent cocker and decocker.

I have been thinking about this a lot. Can’t we all just agree to be just DEER HUNTERS? I grew up in the early 80s rifle hunting in Georgia from wood built stands, climbers weren’t a thing much then. I hunted with an iron sighted Marlin .35. Then as I got older learned to shoot a compound bow while in the USAF in England … didn’t hunt, cant hunt but I shot a lot of 3D and 3D tournaments. Came back to the states in 1990 and took those new Archery skills to the Georgia woods archery deer hunting with mixed results. Moved to N.C. from Georgia in 1993 as part of a job transfer. N.C. had a specific MUZZLELOADER season, no archery included… so I bought my first smokepole and killed one of my best bucks on public in 1994. Moved back to Georgia in 2000 and continued to “Deer Hunt” archery, muzzleloader, rifle basically from 2000 until today. I moved “ archery wise” from compound to crossbow about 2 years ago because I wanted to. My primary archery choice today is a crossbow. I still hunt with my centerfire rifle and my muzzleloader and my archery gear depending on the game laws and state I’m hunting in. I’m not caught up in METHOD I’m caught up in DEER HUNTING what is legal and what is the most legal and lethal method and tool I can use to kill deer and not wound, injure, etc. KILL A DEER and recover it quickly, effectively, minimum error, minimum suffering, quick, clean, DRT. My rifle shots are often same range as my archery shots, same as my muzzleloader shots and close as possible usually under 30 yards. I hunt as up close and personal as I can regardless of the method. Method to me is less important than the Success aspect. I love all my deer killing tools … love them all. I can guarantee you any the Anti Hunters out there don’t care about or one tool vs. the other. They hate every method THEY HATE HUNTERS and HUNTING . Why do we fight over such trivial things, method of choice, size, all the other topics that divide us? Think about it? We need to support one another. To each his own. RANT OVER. Interesting video, thanks to both of you. I have a few traditional bows and love to shoot them but age has earned some serious wear and tear. I no longer have a "hunting" compound and probably will not hunt with one again. A BIG thing for me is not having to draw before the shot. I probably am 50-50 between on the ground or up a tree, and I wait for a perfect shot or don't shoot. Waiting at full draw, even with a compound, is not gonna work for me. I enjoy waiting for the perfect shot to line up, as much as the rest of the hunt. Love that the crossbow allows for a quick, consistent kill, when I do my part...

To each his own. Let the Compound guys have at it. For me, I love being able to be seated and use my Summit Climber as a steady rest when I take that shot. For the most part you will never get the platform part of a Summit Climber to be flat, it will always be on some type of slope. So being able to sit with a CB is huge. Plus, standing on a slope and the wind is blowing is never a good thing saftey wise and accuracy wise.

My 96 year old grandfather introduced me to crossbows. I was 14 years old and my father bought me one just like my grandfather's, when they legalized them in Ontario in the 1980s. It's been a great experience over the years. Nothing against compounds but I just never had a desire or incentive to try them.

Keep in mind that I am a compound guy. I found this channel a few years ago while learning about crossbows and debating on whether to get one or not. I feel that there is definitely a place for crossbows in archery season. However, I believe that there should be a descending degree of difficulty as the season progresses. Meaning, the season should start with long bow/recurve, then to compound, then crossbow, traditional muzzleloader (sidelock, flintlock), modern inline muzzleloader, and finally modern firearm. I've used my crossbow a few times while deer hunting, but honestly, I prefer to take my compound out. It just doesn't feel right to use a crossbow during archery season. Just my personal preference. Those that are young (16 and under), disabled, or old (65 or over) should be allowed to use a crossbow all season long.

That is certainly not the trend, crossbows will continue to take over. I think there's room for both, but just keep watching and enjoying the crossbows and see where it goes.

@Deathbybunjie I understand that completely. Please do not take it the wrong way. It is not my intention to be insulting in any manner or degree. The entire reason I research and try new things is to learn, to understand the other side. Look at it from my point of view. From a young age, I worked hard to learn how to shoot a bow. I struggled until I was 10 to be able to draw the 45 lb minimum that my Great Uncle mandated as the least amount before he'd take me hunting. My reward for all of my effort? I got to hunt during a time of season when fewer people were in the woods because they were unwilling or incapable of the increase in effort involved with participating in the archery season. I would see the masses come out on our public land during modern gun. People who honestly had no business being out there. People who were unsafe, unskilled, and unethical. People who would quite literally shoot from the roadside, shoot a deer out from under you while you're in a stand just yards away and would not track an animal if it didn't fall where it was shot because (they must've missed). I always believed this was because of the sheer lack of effort involved while hunting with modern firearms. Someone could literally go to Walmart, buy a rifle, a couple boxes of ammo, take a few sighting shots, and head to the woods. Bear in mind that this was the mid to late 90's. The technology just hadn't evolved anywhere close to where it is now. Fast forward to the late 2000's, where I lived in IN, and there was discussion of allowing crossbows during all of the archery season. I was 100% against that. I was always told that these crossbows were "just like guns" with a range similar to a sidelock muzzleloader. Obviously, I was afraid of all the "unethical, and unskilled" hunters that would now be able to come out to hunt. What I had failed to realize until I finally got a new bow was that the technological advancements in compound bows had increased so greatly that most of those who would utilize the crossbow were already in the woods with me. It took several years for me to even consider sharing the woods with someone who didn't take the time to hone the skills of archery. Finally, after having a civil conversation in the parking lot of a local WMA, I decided to look into crossbows for the first time. I started researching the pros and cons and ultimately found your channel from the suggestion of someone from Bowhunters of America FB page. Through you, I've seen that the difference isn't as drastic as I once thought. So, I decided to buy an entry level crossbow to try myself. It is most definitely fun to shoot. Being limited in its ability to be used in confined areas is a major drawback for me. I still prefer to use my compound, but as I stated, that is my personal preference to do so. I do still feel that those who take the time to learn the more basic hunting weapons should be rewarded with a short season to themselves, but I do realize that the amount of hunters in the woods are becoming less and less each year. Because of this, I fully understand allowing more equipment to be utilized during the season.

IMO the biggest advantage for compound bows is arrow weight. Other than that, crossbows have all the other big advantages.

I shoot my compound everyday. I stil use a crossbow in situations were I am not 100 percent sure I can shoot with proper form.

I shot 3D archery in 1989. Won and placed in some tournaments… this was in England while in the USAF. RAF Lakenheath. Bowhunting is strictly prohibited in England but I learned to shoot in the UK. I got out in 90-91. Bowhunted with a compound since then up until 2021. Killed many deer with compound until then. I switched to a crossbow 2 years ago. This is a great video. And it is all archery equipment. To each his own. Great Bridge Rich! We really need each other against the antis. Olive branches are very cool! Even if you are the first to extend one. This guy is very cool … GREAT VIDEO love it!

Glad you're into it My friend. Everybody probably has a reason, mine was physical. Thankfully, my kids got me back off the coach, by purchasing me one. Maybe I should have tuned down my compound to 55 lbs, not sure. Sitting on the ground/tree in cold weather, not sure I could pull that off anymore. Even though my mind tells me I can. Unfortunately my body tells me something different. So I switched, allows me to get out there, do what I love. Thankful!😊

It's very hard to free hand a crossbow as opposed to a compound bow. It's very easy to pick up a crossbow that you haven't shot in weeks or months and know it/ you will perform. When I am dialed in with a compound because I've been shooting it everyday, I can shoot more accurately and farther with a compound. ... but I don't shoot a compound because I can't shoot everyday.

You might need to shoot every day to hunt with a longbow or recurve, but once you get the basics down with a compound, you can shoot like 5 arrows and be dialed in for hunting season. A compound is an arrow shooting machine just as much as a crossbow is.

@@rdevaughn22 Bowhunters are not archery prodigies. Most don't even check to see if their bow is ready until mid-September. You'll be fine picking it up as an adult.

With Eric's current bow setup, his Momentum = 0.596 slugs. I have to say that I was surprised at the speed he said he was getting, I expected more for some reason.

The speed of sound is a constant 1100 feet per second. I won't take a 60-yard shot at a live animal with a 400 FPS at the bow/crossbow. The arrow at 400 fps is 64% slower than sound at the bow and even slower with yardage.

I will tell you exactly how we feel. They are cool machines and they are fun to shoot. That said they don't belong in the special archery season unless you are a kid or disabled. People who don't have the time or want to learn how to shoot a vertical bow are not entitled to the special archery season.

I also hunt compound and crossbow. I own a barnette whitetail hunter str. I know its old. I love it and, twice now successfully I have had to reload that crossbow in my climber stand. My stand is a summit viper. Im a 180 pound guy at 6.2 . If you need to get a second shot, you do what ya gotta do. It is duable with the crossbow.

When I hunted with Recurve I didn’t like Compounds. Xbow’s horrified me. I’ve now missed bucks with Xbow’s Compounds Recurves and guns, so???? Currently using Mathews VXR and older Q2. But Xbow and guns huge advantage for sure but sure no guaranteed Buck. But I will say I respect/appreciate a Hunter and Buck/Doe a lot more when shot with recurve or compound.

I've herd compound hunters call crossbow hunters "lazy" and say "they just want it as easy as possible", but they don't realize that they are just making that up in their own minds.

@@Derrek4Real I shoot all three (recurve, compound, and crossbow). To me the compound and the crossbow are about equally difficult. Interestingly, the lands that I hunt on track the hours and success ratios of the various implements, and it turns out that crossbow hunters in my area tend to take about half as many hours in the woods for the same harvest as recurves and compounds. So, there is an argument that is, at least in some way, easier. My point is that the complaints about "laziness" are never based on anything they've actually seen of crossbow hunters, just what they imagine their motivations are.

@ThirdLawPair I use crossbows I have 2. Alot of ppl don't like them at all. Alot of ppl really hate them amd do say what u say in ur first post. At the end of the day who cares? As long as ppl are getting out is all that matters... I am a Guide in NYS and have a dog for deer tracking. I don't care what u use as long as u are in the woods. Most ppl are lazy and most have no idea how to hunt cause they were never taught... 90% of the deer are killed by 10% of the hunters lol haha 🤣 😂 😆. Crossbows get a bad word cause ppl just buy em and send em... I go on countless calls. Like I said before my rant cause most ppl talk a big game on the world wide web. As long as u are out there trying ur best who cares have fun and enjoy nature and maybe get some good meat. God bless

@@Deathbybunjie Even if it is easier, which I'm certain it is in a lot of cases, that's not the same as saying the only reason anyone uses one is because they just want to make it all as easy as possible. It's a pretty basic principle of adult life that if you want to know why someone does something different from you, you need to ask them. I a lot of these guys don't even preface it by saying "I think..." they just declare it as the truth and don't even realize that they are just making it up. If they said "I've heard crossbow guys say..." or "I've seen crossbow guys do...", and used that as their argument for why crossbows are lazy, then that would be a different thing.

There was the same controversy between trad bow hunters and compound bow hunters when compounds first came out. Now it seems both groups are beating up on crossbow hunters. Get together guys and support the archery hunting sport no matter what one shoots.

for sound to travel 60y is 0.16s for an arrow of 400fps (calculated arrow not slowing down) 0.45s that about or more than 0.3s for an animal to react

@@Deathbybunjie i could find only reaction time for humans and thos numbers varies from 0.13s to 0.35s,i could not find any for deer but my guess its there somewhere too. so there could be 0.0 to 0.2s an animal to react, you are wrong about the speed of gravity, you need to rethink that. a deer is not a falling rock/balloon it has muscles for movement, dropping down thats where gravity does its work but any other movement has to do with muscles and how quickly those can accelerate the body in any direction, as goes for animals it is hard to predict where it will move to. thets where inertia comes in, the lighter the faster it will start to move, same goes for when limbs starts/stops especially the ends of them.

Mixed feelings I'm sure but alot of them are against xbows especially full inclusion where I live ...The New York State Bow Hunters Association has rallied against having crossbows included in our whole archery season....we can currently use them the last 14 days of our near 50 day season.....

I shoot/hunt with a trad recurve and recurve xbow (excalibur). Never understood why there is any hate to the xbow guys. It’s so bad in the trad community, like ridiculously bad. It needs to stop. Anyway, great videeo, Rich, as always. I still think you need some grilling lessons though 🤣🤣🤣. Okay, I’ll stop teasing you. 😅

@@Deathbybunjie I'm good friends with the guy who owns my local archery shop. He tells me that most compound bow hunters don't pick up their bow until two weeks before the season starts. Most of the year you almost never see a guy at the range practicing with his compound. Then mid-September rolls around he gets slammed with guys coming in needing their bows set up for the season. Then these same guys have funny things to say about crossbows.
