What do Dutch Europeans think of Americans? 

I did find this interesting. In fact, I am a professor of International Business in the US, and I plan to share it with my class on Doing Business in the Low Countries. Well done.

People cannot be that ignorant to believe what they see in movies and television as a true reflection of what the U.S. is. Worldwide, everyone understands parody. The U.S. is just waking up to the fact that our foods for the most part, are banned in Europe and for good reason, there is nothing healthy in our foods. They are for the most part either full of carcinogens or are high carb. Since Europe has adopted our foods and pharmaceuticals, we Americans will now not be the only worldwide lab rats in obesity and long-term health issues. We are backing away from processed foods and drive-thru foods, while Europe is embracing it. Good luck. Why was Trump elected? We were tired of lifetime-politicians gaming the system. Our politicians are as corrupt as any third world nation. Our media is as corrupt as any third world nation. Europeans calling Americans lazy - that's rich, since we generally have a later retirement age, less maternity leave and on average we only have12 days of vacation - that includes sick days. 60% of Americans do not have passports, because we don't have the luxury of travel time and or money to make use of a passport and we can travel the length and breadth of Europe in our own country without a passport. Because of our corrupt politicians this country has stuck its nose where it shouldn't have, and we've helped rebuild and defend (asking nothing in return) Europeans that are so ungrateful to the point they hate Americans? As far as learning a new language, how many languages would you like us to learn? From the beginning of migration (we are a nation of migrants), on the concept "we should learn to speak the language", we would have learned Irish, German, French, Portuguese, Cantonese, Spanish, Arabic, Sudanese, you name it, we would need to learn it. Historically, all of our ancestors had to learn the national language. But I digress, that was when migrants came to a new nation and assimilated, grateful to have shelter from starvation and persecution, silly me!

I have a simple question: North Americans, Central Americans and South Americans are Americans?... Remenber "America" is not the only American country (go to google)

The Dutch have been slave traders since ***the 1500s***, and were SO atrocious that only 3 (MUCH larger) countries traded more human flesh of innocent men, women, and children than the tiny Netherlands. Not only were your sheer numbers horrendous - especially for your size - your treatment of slaves was considered particularly vicious, even by the British. They lost their entire country to the Nazis in only five days and then spent the rest of the war cowering and fornicating with Nazis. While AMERICA was BY FAR the largest and strongest force killing those same Nazis and running them out of Europe.

I'm an American 🇺🇸 and I loved this video! I agree with many if not all the things they have said about America and us Americans. We and I are loud, obese, and don't know too much of what goes on outside of the US. Looking at our news I see a lot about mass shootings, gun violence, and politics. But I do not own a gun, have never been arrested, and where I live it's relatively safe. I especially loved what they said about Trump, they just said his name as if to say that's a force within himself. Lol 😆 I feel as if America is more divided now more than ever thanks to Trump. And this whole Migrant crisis we have been having is making things worse imo. Again, I loved this video and appreciate their honesty. ❤

Perhaps, quite a brunt assessment. Frankly, these people hit every deep negative stereotype which is a little shocking, but I question their perspective based on second-hand information on what they hear and conceptualize vs. actually traveling to America and formulating their own opinion. I took notice of the one guy who said he's been to America, so I respect that. It could also be counterbalanced with videos of Europeans who live three to six months or more and travel the entire US to gain more perspective. The same goes for Americans gaining perspective across all the countries of Europe and discovering and appreciating their intricacies. It seems those who take time to visit have a more positive outlook on America (and Europe) in general. As an American, I would feel bad for any tourist or visitor who makes a full assessment based on a short trip to a single area like NYC or LA, which really is in its own bubble. Each region and state is completely different, and yields different perspectives, cultures, accents and more. I hope more people soften up and gain more first-hand perspective on life and experience in other places, and yes, it goes both ways.

I love to talk to people too. I went to my local post office today. I spoke with a stranger before I mailed my letters, then talked to a woman on the way to the nearby grocery store. Inside, I spoke with several more people I didn't know. But sometimes I encounter people I actually know. Humans are social animals.

Americans are definitely more open and accepting than Europeans. You can be different in the USA and you will for the most part fit in. In Europe it's harder.

When I first met Dutch people through my job, I found their directness rude because I did not understand the culture! After I realized that the Dutch value being upfront, I realized they were not being rude but just following what their culture valued.

Overall I think Dutch people are quite open to meet and mingle with Americans, their English is also very good which helps. If you come here I very much doubt that you'd feel unwelcome... What's said in this video pertains mostly to what happens in America and isn't as much a stigma towards US individuals. I kind of get that vibe from Europeans as well. Maybe it is because their civilizations are older so they feel like they are more cultured than us colonials. They seem to like telling me how much better everything in Europe is. The U.S. has many problems and no one here thinks we are better.

@@Prairielander well I would think Europeans are a bit bitter for no reason. No one in the USA had bad opinions of Europe and think of it as a nice tourist destination. But Europeans seem to be obsessed about the USA until they come here (a German friend of mine visited here and was amazed by the nature, amazing Universities and the ability to own big houses and the vastness of the suburbs) and like seeing what's possible. The US has a lot of negatives but the positives seem to only be understood when experienced and lived.

Agreed, i remember walking everywhere in Amsterdam and when I got back into the states, you have to drive everywhere, unless if you live in NY or some major city that allows walking. The one thing that is killing America is the social media though, i noticed when i was in Amsterdam, people weren’t glued to their phones at the dinner table. Also want to add food takes a lot longer to serve in Europe compared to the US. America has a lot of good places too though and in a way is very different inside itself.

Glad you appreciate the unfiltered part. I was a bit surprised by the mostly negative reactions. I feel it's mostly aimed towards the politics of America though and to a much lesser extent the people. I think generally the Dutch are quite open to receiving and mingling with American people and I don't think there's a big if any negative stigma towards American individuals, generally. That said, it seems there's more of that still then I initially thought.

Europe has its fair share of issues, but let's be honest. Many Americans don't even think about other countries, and some can't even tell you the difference between a country and a continent. I thought this was an exaggeration, but in my own experience, it's been true So yes, Europe has its prejudices, but we pay attention to things happening outside Europe. We're also more likely to travel outside Europe. Even though it's larger and more populous than the US. I think the issue here is, that the US has the cultural microphone. So the rest of the world, at least those who can speak English are able to watch / listen to Americans. The good, the bad and the ugly. And a lot of it lately has been ugly. This is both a blessing and a curse for Americans. They get to be the one on the stage, but the audience gets to see the all the imperfections. This will pass when another country or another continent replaces the US as the microphone. It will happen, it probably already is. Ask France, Britain, Spain, Rome, Greece, etc.

Americans are friendly, but only on the surface . They will not open up and/or the want to develop a real friendship.

It's not that people outright dislike the US or Americans, it's the overexposure, especially the toxic way in which media companies operate, that eventually leads to these criticisms.

We do get called 'Europe' and 'Europeans' often, as if we are the united states of Europe or something. Yes US has different states, but you are 1 country. Europe has many countries.

Every (and I mean every) Dutch person I have encountered who comes the U.S. in my field (science) to work stays because the opportunities here. And although they pride themselves of living small, once they have the opportunity, they like big houses just like everyone else.

No one is bitter or obsessed about the US. This thinking is exactly the superiority people feel the US has. Of course there are many positives and negatives in any country. When people are asked this, they have to think quickly so the obvious comes to mind. Compared to the quality of life in Europe, US isn't as great as other countries. But people in the Netherlands are envious of owning more land. We are a tiny country with a lot of density, so land is expensive. I personally like American people in general, very warm people who care a lot about their communities. The civil society there is wonderful. And of course the creativity: music and film industry.

I partly agree. The Dutch have a lack of filters but I think that has both benefits and drawbacks the former of which you don't mention - it does promote honesty. Most Dutch people are good people that have no bad intentions whatsoever. If you ask them something they will answer you exactly as they see it, which personally I appreciate. That said, I'm aware of the downside as well, some people can be overly crude and as a result come across or be disrespectful. This in my experience is a minority though. I do agree however that Americans overall have a more entrepreneurial spirit.

@@CultureCompassTV Yes, I forgot to mention the pros of being straightforward! Not beating around the bush can be helpful, too. I have heard some Dutch people use this as an “excuse” at times though and say something offensive or highly insensitive (I am talking about something that’s at the level of being racist or something to that degree) and then shrug their shoulders and say, “We are just honest”. Of course that’s the minority and my experiences with Dutch people were more positive than not. It’s quite interesting that the British, their neighbor just to the west, are quite the opposite. Watching them work together can be quite amusing at times. 😂

In fact people have voted for the immoral and unethical for centuries, not only that, have pretended they've never done so.

They are very insular and aren't aware that most of the world has an awful opinion of the Dutch due to the immorality of their historical and sometimes current character of their contacts all over the world. I also find a lot are not even aware how relatively tiny their country is or how poor it would have been without the exploitation of other people and their resources. Or either they pretend to be. I'm not sure which is worse. A lot of European countries are about to find that sad truth. The real regret should be thinking about what the positive possibilities would have been today if instead of abject exploitation they had developed territories with mutual respect and actually happily given them independence with a developing middle class and created a strong market and purveyor of resources with a dedicated feeling of loyalty and gratitude towards the Dutch. That was the missed opportunity of all European countries. They knew better, in terms of the basics tenants of ethics and past contact, than to trade in inferiority politics but they did it anyway.

Sorry to inform you that I think the bakeries in the US are all very terrible, all too much artificial sweeteners and colors, awful colors--bright blue and orange and red colored cakes. Please try visit any European country and try their bakeries, if you want to know really delicious bakeries.

@@maxyma2889 There are many bakeries using organic flours with dairy products from small dairy farms. Unless you have been everywhere in the US, you don't know the delicious foods we can produce. I live in large metropolitan area and have literally hundreds of bakeries to choose from. I'm not saying bad bakeries don't exist here, they do but I don't go to them. I've been all over Europe in multiple countries - France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and others and the foods I choose to purchase here are on the same level of quality. You unfortunately have not had the opportunity to try the quality foods we do have.

I think in part yes this shows the Dutch nature of saying what you think and generally having a critical view on things. I think most Dutch people are aware of the homeless problem in America. Hard to tell for sure since I didn't talk to people about that specifically. Income inequality is something that did come up a few times though.

I feel it’s just politically correct to bash the US these days, not only for the Dutch. But just look at all the inventions from the US that we use every day. Surely it can’t be that bad. And if it is: If the physical infrastructure is so bad in the US like the people in the video claim, what do you think that means for the infrastructure of the internet?

When you hear for example about police brutality on black people, it can be easy to extrapolate that to America being relatively unfriendly towards black people which may or may not be the case - I don't know.. About inventions: I've always followed what Tesla and Elon musk does with high interest, and I live on the English internet. I rarely read Dutch online. Not because I don't like to. It's just because the English internet is so much larger and thus it has better overall content. In terms of infrastructure, I do feel the man who talked about that has a good point. I noticed the same when I was in Jacksonville, Tennessee in the US. It may not be like that everywhere but from what I understand it is like that in many places.

It really wasn't. People addressed some real issues the US is facing, that is not bigotry. America used to be respected in the world, but not anymore. You are usually not 'the best' when it comes to quality of life, but a lot of people are not aware of that because they don't leave their country to see how others live. Nor are they aware how the rest of the world sees the US, as Americans are being taught that the US is the best. When Americans travel it opens their minds about their own country (and the same goes for us travelling abroad too). The things mentioned are just things that come to mind when you have to answer a question quickly. That doesn't mean the US doesn't have great people or good qualities. And of course you love your home country. I have plenty of negative things to say about my own country, but it's still "home". We form our opinions not just from the news but experiencing visiting the US, talking to other Americans online or in our country and scientific data. Of course there are always stereotypes and opinions aren't always nuanced, but that's with everyone. Americans also have stereotypes about other countries, it goes back and forth. Reality is always more complex.

As an American living outside USA for 7 years now, I can easily see how your views are also biased. Both Europe and Asia can walk ,bike, or moterbike most everywhere they need. Not because the country is small. It's their culture. Their cities and villages have local open air markets and cheep restaurants and coffee shops . Life outside the u s is completely differand it's amazing. The markets and cheap shops are fun. The most disappointing about the u s is it's medical system which most americans think is the very best in the world, This could not be farther from the truth. Well, over a hundred countries have better medical care at much cheaper prices, the u s a . On top of that, many of them are free of charge or at least. I have two long-term best friends. I can count on the for anything, even if I am wrong. One lives in Munich and the other lives in the Netherlands. In both north and south America, we are more relaxed than the Europeans in some things. I once watched a group of Brazilians traveling in Germany. It is their custom to sing everywhere they go. It was surprising for them to be told not to sing on the trains and subways because people were working on their laptops. In the Americas, we developed culturally different because it was necessary to socialize through the immigrations and internal migrations. It's why we smile at strangers and share information. It was necessary to our development and survival. In Europe, in recent history, the 2 World Wars shaped attitudes. There is nothing wrong with being culturally different but when in Rome, do as the Romans.

But ofcourse that says nothing about the american people, there are so many beautiful things in the US and the people I met from the US have been overwhelmingly friendly. I don't think they realize that there's a huge group of african american people who fit into a perfect stereotype that makes a ton of people disrespect them. Basically being brash, poor, and sketchy. it's a horrible hole they fall into and it's very hard to get out of. I have to act happy despite the huge amount of people that would be afraid to even walk on the same side of the road as me just by my image being remembered for theivery/gang image, hood behavior, and just the general awkward standoffish feeling towards someone living a much harder life than you. Minorities like Indians and African groups of Britian have a completely different image over there. America, any black guy who has dread lochs, tattoos, darker skin, and isn't acting refined and happy is immediately associated with gas stations, 90s Los Angeles low rider culture, jail, guns, gangs, and the crime of having the image of the people who can't escape the torment caused by them existing. It's so sad, and is extremely different to people in Netherlands who if ever there are minorities, they are either racist, or extremely fine with them because it's basically themselves but with darker skin. Netherlands hasn't the faintest clue about American culture and what it means, what we went through to get to where we are, how there's so much more passed the fast food signs, huge miles and miles of neighborhoods, amusement lands like Disney or Universal. It's all charming to me...well not the fast food signs and whole highway off ramp food centers that have nothing else around but highway 50 and forests. But everything else, and how it changes with the different times. It's not just always a eerie dystopian 12:00 hot summer fast food chain. It could be raining at sunset when you go through a McDonald's drive through on the way to a concert, or Winter and snowing at a Wendys in Manhattan. It's just bad product LITERAL placement as in land placement. These companies marketing at extremely popular destinations for people on trips up north or downsouth. It's not that dystopian when 60% of society is a family of 5 who need a quick bite to eat. America has by far the most types of food to choose from out of any other place. Amplified with foreign groups starting family owned restaurants in shabby store lots off town main roads with like a Subway, asain take out place with two seats inside a quant room but has amazing food and so is extremely popular despite the condition that appears cheap and messy (A super american thing), then some Publix, Lions, or I don't know something else. Basically modern malls are these open facade restaurants and shops off the sides of a highway because the USA is 2.5 percent asphalt which is an insane number out of 100% when you think about it. So no they would never understand any background except a silly country with idiots and fat people, who live in dystopian food places everywhere.

You can see that these are consumers of Main Stream Media. I found it interesting there are comments about Trump but not a one about Biden. MSNBC and CNN have brainwashed these children

Visiting a place is not the same as living in it. Personally, as a naturalist and photographer, I enjoy visiting poorer, undeveloped countries because their natural systems are often much more intact. Doesn't mean I'd want to live in them though.

@gytan2221, say what? That’s crazy talk. I’m 62 and have been to Europe a score of times (have literally lost count). The first trip was for three months. Several were for a month. In 2022 I spent five months. I’m not that unusual. I’m not ashamed not knowing names of NL parties given there are so many and they have proportional representation and the present coalition has so many parties it could take months to negotiate terms for governance. But most any American can tell you the two major parties in the UK because like here two have dominated the scene for so long - and plenty of us know that Scottish nationalism and Brexit right wing parties have complicated the picture. There are hundreds of US study abroad programs (thousands?) where American students spend months at a time studying the history and culture of their host country. It would be interesting to know if ANY European university that systematically encourages students to spend months studying in the US. Every US university requires in depth study of aspects of European culture to graduate with any of dozens of common majors. Neither is true of European education. In my experience, a very high proportion of Euro travel “abroad” is Germans going to beaches in Spain and Brits going to ski in the Alps in February. (And a huge proportion of Brits going g to sunny Commonwealth island resorts.) All very fine, but it scarcely demonstrates a determination to be students of Spanish history or Swiss politics.
