What do each of the Sex and The City gals REALLY represent?

The Take

Are you a Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte, or Miranda? Each woman feels so real, distinct, and clearly defined - so we can easily see ourselves in them, whether we’re a neurotic creative type like Carrie, a hopeless romantic like Charlotte, a confident “try-sexual” like Samantha, or an ambitious cynic like Miranda (or perhaps a mix of multiple characters.) So, which one are you - and what can we learn from each of the ladies?

Are we all forgetting that Samantha also had a really successful career like Miranda? She wasn't any less driven than her.

Samantha is always commented just around her sexuality. While that part of her was amazing to see on TV, she was so much more. She was kind, generous, honest, open-minded, and an all around good person. She was also confident, ambitious, and true to herself. I aspired to be like her.

You know you're right. She is so much more and no one ever talks about it. She was always the one the girls went to when they didn't want to go to the others. There was a reason for that.

Not to mention loyal!! She was always such a good friend to the people she loved. Part of why she was so weary of monogamy was because she took it so seriously. I don’t think she ever cheated on a partner once they were officially together

Samantha is just awesome! She’s a Queer Icon. She was one of the few people in the show who experimented in a non-traditional relationship, encouraged a precursor to modern-day pansexuality AND was the mistress of her own desires. Also, she’s great fun! (Kim CATRALL is awesome)

I loved MIranda until the new series. It's like she did a complete 180 personality wise, and no, I'm not referring to her coming out. I have no problem with that. It was the way she treated everyone during it and threw everything away to chase after Che. Miranda from the og series would never have done that. That aside, I loved OG series Miranda and Samantha and considered myself a combo of those two characters.

Amen. Well said. I agree og Miranda stood up for herself and was a feminist of the group. She is the every woman who was brave and dealt with the unfair parts of life on this show. She was a hardworking attorney who earned everything she had. The pairing with Steve was brilliant. She tried to dismiss him but ended up loving him for his goofyness. She loved him for testing her without changing her too much. Now, what Cynthia did to old Miranda was a crime. Og Miranda would have never put up with the character assassination that Cynthia wanted. It is a shame.

As a working class raised gal who sometimes struggle to spend her hard earned money on the things she loves, I still invoke Carrie when I'm struggling to make a big purchase: It's okay to have some of my money hanging in my closet 🤷🏽‍♀️ And although I don't have a need or stamina for half her sex escapades... Samantha is my forever fairy godmother 🥂

Samantha doesn't have emotional intimacy issues. She is SUPER close to three other people! They're extremely intimate with one another, they share secrets, they understand each other, they love each other fiercely. Emotional intimacy, and also love btw, isn't just for people you're having sex with. That idea is really detrimental to mental and social wellbeing and needs to go.

Yeah but they're refering to that certain kind of intimacy, so no need to get all worked up about it.

Plus she found love in Smith and Richard. The reason they didn't work out was because in Richard's case he cheated and she couldn't trust him. And Smith because she realized that she wasn't making herself a priority while catering to him and his career. These are both solid reasons to end a relationship and shows that she doesn't have emotional intimacy issues at all

The irony is that viewers of the show were sidetracked by two specific characters: Samantha and Carrie. People were so distracted by Samantha’s sexual prowess to pay attention to her eclectic, fabulous sense of style, her success as an informed ent business woman, her grounded approach to the realities of life, AND how much of a loyal friend she was. People were also so distracted by Carrie’s whimsical fashions that they totally overlooked the fact that Carrie was self-absorbed, rude, financially irresponsible, emotionally needy to “Big”, and a narcissistic nightmare to Aiden. She was indecisive, whiney, insecure, and also a stalker to Natasha. She also never valued any of her friendships (and she was particularly judgmental to all of them, and flat out awful to Stanford. Carrie was a hot steaming mess!!!

Romantics do actually have a lot of depth, especially emotionally, just in a way that's unseen to other types. (For instance as artists, hence why they appear superficial due to their eye for image/understanding the importance of images as symbols of one's unconscious) BTW- as a romantic, I've always found the Samantha/Carrie type quite superficial myself.

I'm a Miranda. The old Miranda is my favorite business woman, who is a realist in dating and a bit of a cynic with men. Not the AJLT Miranda with Cynthia Nixon. In my opinion Cynthia Nixon ruined Miranda. The old Miranda was the hard working woman who was independent and secure in her work life, but a bit insecure in dating. That is real life.

Margaret Cho had a great bit talking about this: Whenever you have 3 women who are friends there's always 1) A smart one, 2) a sweet one, and 3) a whore. This perfectly lines up with 1) Miranda, 2) Charlotte, and 3) Samantha. Carrie, being the narrator, is a careful blend of all three.

Im not gonna say these women are outdated. Because watching this show in 2023, the only character who survived through time is Samantha. But these women are already in their mid 30's in the 90's. The generation is long past and the fights we fight nowadays is different than what they had. Though, I will never forgive Carrie for what she did to Natasha. Even though every one blame Charlotte for the fairy tale she wanted, they gave to it Carrie why can't a girl like Charlotte classy with better upbringing can't dream of it? I honestly don't care much about miranda. Yeah her one liners are good but that one has walls even a wrecking ball couldn't break.

It's really interesting that even now when we're so much more aware of how awful Carrie actually was, all we're talking about re Samantha is her body count. What really set her apart was that she was so loyal, supportive, and nonjudgmental of her friends - more than we can say about the rest of them (especially Carrie).
@silentsaturn7604
@silentsaturn7604 2 года назад
Yeah she never judged her friends when they got engaged or married, she was super supportive when Miranda's mother died and she was so loyal that she wasn't ready to axe Miranda as a friend when she had a baby. Oh wait...

The most funny thing is Carrie never reads or researches the topics she writes about. Which could be okay but at least occasionally, we could have seen her actually doing some real writing. Because this makes her curiosity seem fake. She doesn't want to learn or discover, she just talks about what she and her close circle think. And Samantha is the mother and always will be. She should have been the star.

Always bothered me I tried to push the Tudors on everyone and always un successful. Anyway I hope someone makes a sex and city with a younger group of friends, a new friends foursome but to change the dynamics make them be in college. What I loved about sex and city was really how it was focused on friendship and how the episodes could be watched as comedy standalone. I loved how sex and the city was a true comedy, the Drama was never too important. Desperate housewives was too much of drama comedy, sex and city was full on comedy.
