I found this video super interesting, Jin. I liked how you got three different generations perspectives. Though prepared, here's hoping South Korea never has to go to war.

Hearing different perspectives is great. But I don't see how it could not be mandatory with Your northern neighbour...that's a worry...great show thanks🙏

Military sucks in Korea!!! Yall guys need to be exempted from the military but it is hard because of the low birth rate! I was an air force soldier and made good memories with comrades!!!!!! And the food was amazing!!!!!

Interesting, here in Germany there is no mandatory service at the moment (it has been paused since 2011), but people still join military because it offers good and secure wages and you can do job training or study there.

Learning hierarchy in the military is good, because in a war people must be easy to instruct. But the age hierarchy thing the Koreans have isn't fair. Your manager could be younger than you, they shouldn't be afraid to give instructions because of that. I think all adults regardless of age should respect each other.

Most Korean guys don't like being enlisted but they have no choice. South Korea's major enemies are North Korea, the People's Republic of China, and Japan. They are greedy nations having some military plans to invade South Korea someday. Thus, the Korean defense ministry had to draft all younger Korean guys who could become soldiers for Korea's national defense. Military service in South Korea is a sort of unavoidable duty or fate as Koreanmen and all Korean citizens already know. Unfortunately, some thoughtless feminists who would like to mock males' military service in South Korea made Korean guys who were discharged from military service angry. Not to mention, they love that vibe. If a few feminists want to ridicule male soldiers in the Korean army, they ought to know first the fact those troopers might be feminists' dads, brothers, hubby, sons and nephews, or relatives. They should remember that before trying a mocking process. All South Koreans must respect or look up to Korean soldiers unconditionally.

No. This is an issue that can be easily misunderstood. Japan is Korea's closest friend geographically. There is a strong tendency to hastily judge the current situation in Korea based solely on the fact that Korea had a difficult time with Japan in the past. Currently, South Korea belongs to a liberal alliance centered on Korea, the United States, and Japan. On the other hand, I don't know what to call it, but it is an enemy that is clearly an ally of the communist regime with a dictator. This includes North Korea, China, and Russia. In conclusion, today's Japan is no longer Korea's archenemy, but a friend and ally. Those who demonize Japan are only doing so for political gain. I agree with the opinion about radical feminists being the cause of gender conflict in Korea.
@betterdrugsthanyours
@betterdrugsthanyours 10 месяцев назад
I think the radical feminism in Korea is also partially a result of traditional values losing to western influence. You should see how this issue was covered in western media during the 2022 election.

"Radical feminism" is coming from Korea's communist neighbors. To use the shrillness of women as a destabilizing element is one of there favored tactics

As an American female, i think that S.Korea should start conscripting women. Their population is dropping dramatically. If the women arent having children, then have them serve too. Maybe make exemptions for those with kids??? This may sound harsh, but there are less and less soldiers every year. Yes, the Americans are stationed there, but there is only so much that they can do.

I know it’s difficult, but the stability of N. Korea is so tenuous. If I ruled the world 😛, I’d train an elite group of spies to infiltrate Pyongyang and neutralize the current regime - so that no young men from EITHER side ever have to be forced to do anything.

Interesting that the one youngstet was told that the air force is not "real army". I always thought, at least in the US, they were looked at as the sophisticated branch. Lol. Especially if you become a pilot, theres alot of respect that comes with that role

Very interesting topic, Jin!! I'm currently watching on Netflix, Kdrama "D.P." season 2. It's about a unit in the Korean Military that catches desertors and they show a lot of very hard bullying in the Military. Is that real or they just made it up for the drama?? Have you been into the Mandatory Military Service?

Military Mandatory for young people is not good; I don't think younger armies have a mature decision in case war happens, especially in training youngster officers are mostly abusing rookies... Rookies will be trained by immature officers and tend to do inappropriate punishment which can lead to de*th (not just in S.K.) That is why parents get really worried about their child going to military service, Not because of training but abused physically & mentally.

Very interesting interview... as usual ! And the answers were more positive than I expected. Military is also mandatory in my country (even if the Neutrality is part of our Constitution...) but it's not so long as in SK. And here, if you are officer in the army it can help a lot to have management job, specially in the Bank or Insurance Branches.

@@user-lb7by7pf8v I know that, I’ve watched Korean programs like hello counselor for years, I know kdrama is different from reality and I know it was hell for many Korean men in the military, there many countries who have military service as well but I think if the treatment during the service was better I don’t think it would’ve been that hell, of course military’s environment is tough, but like I said I’ve watched Korean programs and documentaries more than the kdrama for years because I’m interested in Koreans and their culture more because of the similarities between them and my culture ( I come from Saudi Arabia) also I know it’s tough financially in South Korea nowadays for Koreans but nevertheless I know I can’t know what you’ve been through but you deserve admiration for your patience and service

I served in the Army myself and I understand the hardship but it is much easier to do when you are young and then there is a trained person for a longer person. If everyone is expected to do it then businesses will understand. Yes you are low paid but so are your living expenses and it is easier to do this before you settle somewhere and start your career. Also you learn habits that will help you with your job. @@roter13

Valid that it could seem a bit toxic, but i think its good because it teaches some things about the what masculinity means imo. Whether you want to or not, it is your duty to serve your country, and accepting this and giving it your best shot is what it means to be a man in this culture.
