Korea seems to be killing it these days when it comes to entertainment. A crazy Survivor-like dating show called Single’s Inferno recently hit Netflix’s Global Top 10, and we were asked how the show is perceived in Korea. How does the Korean dating culture differ from what you see on the show? Are Koreans even aware of the controversy surrounding the show, specifically in regards to the issue of colorism? We hit the streets of Seoul to find out.
The opinions expressed in this video are those of individual interviewees alone and do not reflect the views of ASIAN BOSS or the general Korean population.
0:00 - Intro
0:52 - How popular is the show in Korea?
2:15 - Why is the show so popular overseas?
3:21 - Do Koreans find the contestants in the show good-looking?
3:47 - Is it easy to find people who are as good-looking as the contestants in Korea?
5:33 - How important is age and occupation in Korean dating culture?
7:25 - Does blind date culture exist in Korea?
9:32 - Why is having lighter, fairer skin a compliment in Korea?

This street interview was conducted before the Free Zia controversy so let us know if you want us to do a follow-up street interview regarding that topic. We would be more inclined to go ahead if the answers could offer some deeper cultural insight into the controversy so let us know what kind of questions we should be asking. Thanks for watching, everybody!

@agapp11able This needs to be said thank you. In my case of chinese culture we were also taught that pale means purity and my culture also prefers having pale skins. Notice how I said pale and not white because thats where all these foreigners get mixed up. This is why I hate western culture of getting offended on basically nothing.

I recently had an experience with this pale skin thing. I’m getting married this summer here in Korea and we went to a makeup shop to test the makeup. The artist put on a super light shade of foundation that didn’t match me at all and when I told her I wanted it to match my skin, she told me “it depends on your dress. If your dress is white, then your makeup should be lighter to suit the dress better” This whole logic didn’t make sense to me. My body is brown. No amount of makeup on my face will change that. Darker skin women all over the world wear white dresses on their wedding day. Who’s to say they all don’t look beautiful? I know this woman didn’t mean any harm. But it’s just how it felt to hear it. “Am i not pretty because I’m tan?” “Should I not wear a white dress” it was a stupid thought, but it just came so naturally after hearing all this stuff. I don’t like the mindset that white skin is PRETTIER. It can be your preference, but saying someone is pretty because they look that way shows that people have been made to believe that that is the case…which sucks for anyone who doesn’t look that way 😞 This is def one of the hardest parts of living in Korea, is feeling like nothing suits me, nothing was made for me, because at the end of the day, that’s the beauty standard here. But also, it’s not just Korea affected by these issues.

Unfortunately, it seems neither the interviewer nor the interviewees understood what the skin tone controversy is about - it's not about preferring darker or lighter skin tones within an ethnic group and calling that a "preference". Sure, in the 80s, California beach style was the thing and even in Europe people thought being super tanned is cool, and now with all the knowledge we have about skin cancer and skin aging and all, that perception has totally changed and being pale is now great, too. But that's not the point - the point is linking a skin tone to some other characteristic of a person. And that's what the contestants did, by calling girls "pure" and "innocent" because of their fair skin. Which means, no matter how you look at it, that darker-skinned women are NOT as "pure" and "innocent". But those things have nothing to do with each other, just like being tall or having big ears or being Asian has nothing to do with your character. And no matter how much Koreans insist that it's not an issue in Korean culture to think like that, it IS the definition of colorism. Maybe that's what should have been addressed..?

Pale skin equals beauty is ingrained in Korean's culture. You can't change it unless South Korean becomes a multi-cultural country which is unlikely. It's like trying to end racism. Impossible. And it's not an "old idea", South Korea and other asian countries all think the same even today. If you think about it, every country has their ideal beauty standard. Some countries like India prefer "chubby" woman, while some countries like China prefers "skinny" woman. In USA, girls with wide hips are considered sexy, while in Japan, girls with slim hips are considered beautiful. And the list goes on...

Skin color is a beauty preference. There are not many other words to describe the feeling of pure when seeing white skin. Color naturally gives rise to emotions. Red is hot or blood, green is grass and tranquility, blue is water, white is pure like snow, etc. I think this is a human thing, that is tied to our cultures and beliefs. It might be wrong, like snow actually is not pure because it can contain bacteria and microscopic organisms. But them tying it to racism, colorism, misogyny, etc... how exactly is that helping to solve the problem? The beauty standard is the standard because the majority of the people think its the standard. Tanned asians are at a higher risk of getting skin cancer than white asians. So just because you are tanned or darker, its not like its always a good thing. People like what they like, and saying that that is wrong contradicts every argument from LGBT groups to beauty standards.

In our countries fair skin is the beauty standard after that everything is despite. "She has beautiful features despite her dark skin." It's so annoying and leads to people wasting so much precious time trying to get fairer, mostly in dangerous ways like skin bleaching and having so many self esteem issues because colourism comes mostly from people you care about the most for most people like family, the boy/girl you like, etc.

BH to simply put it it’s preferring lighter skin over darker skin. It’s deeper than that though it causes stereotypes and prejudice for example in American media a large majority of mixed race/lighter skin actors are used to portray black people as a whole when there’s in fact a range of different tones not just one. It’s rooted in white supremacy and self hatred in Asia I’m guessing it’s more rooted in classism as having darker skin indicates that you do labour work and are therefore poor whereas lighter skin indicates that you spend your time inside.

@@Marjorie_ colorism is not rooted in white supremacism. Pale skin has been a beauty standard in asia for literally thousands of years before white supremacism existed. Ancient china, ancient india, ancient persia, etc, all these civilisations valued pale skin. It's because of its association with aristocracy, whilst the poor had to labour outside and so were more tan. With the emergence of white supremacism colorism definitely became linked, but colorism actually predated white supremacism. Asians don't want to be pale to look like white people, they want to look like pale asians. Many koreans are actually paler than white people anyway, since white people tan so much nowdays. Like the body builds, the culture, the looks, and a lot more. So to my fellow Filipinos, just accept who you truly are, don't be so insecure about your body and the way you look. What did you expect? You ain't Korean. It's not your fault that you are born in a different country. Also, many different cosmetic procedures are being done in Korea ( not that I'm against it) so there's no reason for you to be insecure. Just Accept and love yourself.

It was a moral reaction. What was portrayed is not reality. From the agency, it was giving an audience the Free Zia brand via the golden spoon concept. Someone could be wealthy and not want to pay for high end luxury. Some could also be wealthy and pay for high end luxury but due to limited edition items or vintage, it is impossible to acquire even if one had money. It came down to Free Zia as a concept created by the agency to achieve desired branding effect vs. Free Zia as actual lifestyle of the person. This packaging to create desired effect is common in kpop to create a certain impression for audience/fans of the person. Each of the expensive clothing often would come with a story due to difficulty of acquiring an authentic one especially the vintage items.

The agency gave a corporate response which tried to limit damages on their part as in they were not involved with counterfeit luxury items and it was Free Zia choice. However, Free Zia did not understand luxury branding and unknowingly bought counterfeit items from street stalls and online website. The first part shifted responsibility from agency to Free Zia. The latter part is defense that she did not know they were famous brands and unknowingly bought counterfeit items. This is a valid potential defense since they are people who think they bought genuine luxury item and paid high price and ended up with a counterfeit item. e.g. paid a seller $20000 and later found out vintage bag was counterfeit. Very different from buying a $30 item and thinking it is genuine. Admitting to any responsibility in the counterfeit scandal would have made the agency a target to be sued by the brands and people would start digging up their other influencers under their management to see if others following the golden spoon concept brand strategy is similar situation. It escalated to a point where Free Zia had to push the shutdown button. It is high pressure because everything from family background to any decisions made as a teen to adulthood is put under a microscope and scrutinized. Free Zia was targeted from the looks of it. Otherwise the agency would have been scrutinized since they had more than one influencer who is under the golden spoon concept branding.

Korea is just obsessed with white face, slim body and many more crazy beauty standards which is forcing many people to go through plastic surgery and I hope they realize that its not a healthy obsession.

Every culture or country is obsessed with something. In some countries, people think you should be overweight to be pretty, in others slim and in others thick. In some countries tanned skin is the preference and in some countries light skin. In some countries they want to be tall, in other they want to be smaller. I my country everyone wants to be tanned and slim. Beauty standards that are not achievable and plastic sugery is becoming more popular here (Germany) aswell.

I watched the show and it was hilarious. I felt like I was watching a Kdrama because of how they edited everything and the people were so uptight and awkward compared to other dating shows from other countries. I liked it but I wish they would have gotten more time to get to know each other because they were there for like a week and we didn't get to see many scenes of them actually interacting, except from the long looks they gave each other xD it was a bit wierd because if it was intended for them to find love why would they be there for such small amount of time?..

I think you misunderstood what she said. She only explained why pale skin is historically preferred. That's not to say that it still applies to Korean society as classism. Currently, the preference for pale skin in Korea is not related to race or class. Preferred faces change with the times. If Korea becomes a more multi-ethnic and multicultural country in the future, the standards will change. In other words, this problem will be solved over time.

About the pale skin or dark skin preference issue, I have some thought. When some painter trying to paint, would they prefer to paint on a white papar(canvas) or black paper? For sure whiter is easier for them to color their painting, right? Of course black canvas can still paint some interesting piece of art, yet there are still some limitation for it that it doesn't suit to paint too. Same goes for pale skin or dark skin preference too, when you paler skin tone, there are a lot easier for you to get make up, but for a darker tone, a lot of color is hardly even visible on such skin. Either way, if you put enough effort on it, yoi can still look prettier. And for those who love you, you are still dazzling like a sunshine regardless of your skin tone. So there is no need to overly concern about that issue.

The skin tone issue in the show is definitely odd, but it's an issue in many cultures/countries. It's sad that skin tone is compared to one's status in society, but it's clearly a social issue that hasn't been fully addressed in Korea and won't be completely unpacked overnight. I think as times change it will improve, but us being outraged won't do much. There are too many global examples of incredible people of different shades and cultures that clearly don't fit that archaic way of thinking. Plus the fact that they're even bothering to ask locals about the skin controversy instead of completely side-stepping it is a positive thing, in my opinion. I think this interview was really interesting.
