I think Americans aren't looked at as seriously because Koreans think it's only temporary (they aren't living there permanently, even with visas). And the stereotypes go both ways, their ideas of what an American is, is the same as an American who travels and wants to date because of K-dramas. Korea is still very much an homogeneous country, so most of their ideas on foreigners in general comes from media.

Look I don't know about Korea but what the girl(the one with the black mask and open hair) said it's actually true here in India. Usually the media or the movies only depict American women as wild and crazy, It has actually become a stereotype about them. If you would ask people on the streets of India, most of them would say that they expect American women to be crazy and moody.

The black girl said right on spot the worst experience I had when were dating a Korean guy for the first time. He asked me so many rude, sexual-harassed like questions and when I showed the offended face he like :" All Westerners are so open-minded and familiar with this kind of things, Ain't they". That was just horrible. Westerners is very open-minded for cultures, but we aren't vulgar to the point all talking about dirty things. That's the worst stereotype!

@@ham-sley1308 "we have morals", yes of course, but sadly, that's not what "most" Asians see in Western Media (Songs, Movies, Series, Digital Content) hahaha 😂so I can't blame if they think that way. Blame Hollywood for that shitty stereotype, painting westerners as "sex-obsessed people with no regard to morals and etiquette". Those westerner guys in the past decades who flocked Asia only to hook up and get them impregnated then leave them didn't help either. Here in this "particular" Asian country, Asian-Americans who grew up in the states and went there to visit their families or whatever, are often described as "too liberated", and often frowned upon for their "very American behavior" and ill-mannered way of speaking to elders and stuff like that. .

I took a language course at Seoul National University and I know how their teachers categorize students from western countries and underdeveloped countries. I was so disheartened that I left the course in the middle. Although, I was so hurt but I have a message for all people around the world who have or still are facing discrimination, looked down at just for being born in an underdeveloped country. If anyone thinks they are superior, this thing only exists in a box which is their mind. It has no reality outside. If someone discriminates or uses hateful words, it shows their own low shallow self. Keep in mind no matter how hard the wind blows, mountains are never moved by it. Be happy and strong for who you are, not because what they think you are.

BK in Korea is viewed as being much more premium compared to BK in US. BK is the worst food chain in US because of its poor management and their run down facilities. I think BK in Korea is doing well. Don't be surprised by how low some people's standards are though, because (I live in US btw) my friend took his date to McD's and they had a romantic time in his truck in the McD's parking lot afterwards. It sounds like, from what I gathered from these particular interviews, that Black women are fetishized, more than anything else. The White men and women seemed to have better luck. I'm not saying that for every person, that opinion is based on this video, and many of the same stories that I've heard. Really makes me sad that that's the perception of Black women there.
@mchjsosde
@mchjsosde 3 года назад
I actually saw a video of a black girl who was mistaken for a prostitute in one of her many trips to Korea. For some Korean guys, that may be partly where the misconception is coming from. Many Korean guys go to brothels during their mandatory army time and it is quite common for human traffickers to trap women into prostitution in foreign countries. The way black women are treated in porn or popular media (not too different tbh) wouldn't help either.

As if Beyonce is the only Black woman they ever seen. It's not only him too literally a whole bunch of them; it's a chain reaction. The other thing they could like relate or piggyback off is just what they see on TV. I have a shape as well and by shape I mean I have a body that is not the average Korean size so there's many times where they will always keep comparing me to Kim Kardashian and when I tell them that her body is fake and she's not Black it's a shocker to them for some reason. Most Korean women are not rude at all, they don't hide their true intention to just have some fun time. In the past days Korean women couldn't have chance to take higher education like going university and learn language, that luxury was only for men. But now most girls go to university and they are well educated and have manner. Also they are getting to make their careers, women are more independent in the financial way, still get paid 2 of 3 comparing with male workers but they're trying. In opposite, many men are likely to get more assertive in the way they make relationship with women and men both. As many men still expect their partners being submissive, and have control on their relationship with their dudes too, they often bluff about numbers of women they slept with. I'm talking in general, not everyone is like this.

Most Koreans I know have zero encounter or relationship with foreigners. Alot of Koreans you will encounter are certain types of people. They are either people who just wants to date a foreigner, people who are already very international, or people who wanna practice from you. Ofc there are others but alot of times it is very difficult for foreigners to get a grasp of the idea of average koreans. It takes alot for foreigners to penetrate into the culture through bad streotypes and ingenuinity put upon the foreign people. These people who were interviewed probably had to manage so many tough moments and disapointments. I hope it turns out rewarding and fulfilling. Koreans have alot to offer too.

I am living in other country as an international student, and I can literally say that it is very common in many countries when local ppl meet you to ask you some verrry private and rude questions. It may hurt you and your feelings but YOU HAVE TO get used to it. I also talked to my friends about this issue but they considered this manner as a way to show their excitement of seeing foreigners. 🙄 But actually it’s not. I still don’t know how to react to these actions but i just learned how to keep my eyes and ears close whenever someone trying to offend me. Sometimes i cry just because I cannot defend myself. I try to keep my tears till I arrive home. On the other hand, if you want to get used to such situations it is better for you to live or work somewhere there are many foreigners similar to you :) or make alot of foreign friends. Keep in mind that not all ppl are similar to one another they may not get offended after seeing how their korean friends treat. It depends on how individuals come from and their personalities.

This was a great edit/mix of views and experiences! I liked the woman's opinion that, despite or perhaps because of the forced awareness of cultural differences, some relationships and communication can be strengthened. The points about fetishization were a good counter example -- just like some Korean guys could be inappropriate and not see the woman as an individual, I'm in the US and have known guys here who fetishized certain Asian women. In all these cases, it would be such a small but beneficial step to pause and ask them or check oneself with, "Wait, would this be something I'd say to someone NOT of XYZ culture or race?" Those are the easy "Don't be a jerk" lessons. The more difficult lessons are where one culture's idea of acceptable good behavior ends up being some degree of unacceptable in another, despite a person trying their sincere best. In my experience, that's been much easier to get blindsided/surprised by, and cause unexpected problems.
