Q: What does Scrum Master do all day? A: Start 1. ANALYZING THE SITUATION 1.1. Observe the current situation in org. Have 1-1s. Attend meetings. 1.2. Create plan of action to implement scrum. It can be ppt or post it note. Show 1.3. Not a one time thing. Keep adapting and keep updating 2. TEACH SCRUM 2.1. Not always classroom teaching 2.2. Find and teach techniques to POs / Devs. 2.3. Learn techniques yourself. That can take days. 2.4. Coaching. Ask one question - and then listen. 2.5. Teaching comes with repetition. Teach and remind. 3. BUILD STRONG RELATIONSHIPS WITH EXECS, OTHER TEAMS, DECISION MAKERS 3.1. Work with other teams. Gain visibility. 3.2. Approach right people, help them, show your value. 3.3. Gain influence and then you get promoted.

Hi Daria, thank you for the great video. According to your opinion, how much do you think a SM should be involved in "technical" part of the work?
@ScrumMastered
@ScrumMastered Год назад
Hi Ivona, thank you! I think it depends on your skills and interest, to be honest, as long as you keep your mind in the Scrum Master mode, rather than developer mode. But I don't think that a Scrum Master should be involved in the actual work unless they also play the role of a Developer. I am not technical at all, and I've never been involved in the actual technical work with the team. However, even though I do not have a technical background, I have a good understanding of good engineering practices and this is where I focus - bringing new ideas, practices, and tools to the team to make their work more effective.

Hi, I like the idea of having a plan of action and to measure improvements. I like to follow a quantitative and qualitative approach, so, a data driven approach coupled with the soft skills. Hi, 👋 Quick question I wanted to ask you. What is the difference between a scrum master and a Product Owner in a team? Who is bigger in rank ? Do they work together hand in hand on the same platform or Scrum Master reports to Pdt Owner hence Pdt Owner has the overall ownership and authority in the team?
@ScrumMastered
@ScrumMastered 2 года назад
Well, there are no hierarchies in a Scrum Team, which means that PO, SM and Developers are all on the same level and no one is anyone's boss. Because the Scrum Team needs to be self-managing, this allows everyone to have the same weight when it comes to disagreements so that the team can come to a consensus together and find the most optimal solution, rather than just follow what one person believes. This is also important because there is natural tension between roles: PO is more focused on business side, Developers on the product quality and tech side, and SM on effective ways of working. So naturally there will be some disagreements and no one should have a higher voice that might move the team in the wrong direction.
@NERIDA82
@NERIDA82 2 года назад
Thank you for your precious advice Daria. I have 2 doubts, maybe you can help me clarify them. 1. If the team members ask you to schedule ceremonies (for instance sprint review where there are stakeholders too) how do you manage it? Do you schedule the meeting after they have released the increment, same day, or the day after? How do you plan it with stakeholders in terms of time? 2. If they use Confluence for retrospectives but you want to try something different like Mural (if it is more entertaining) what do you do? Do you continue with Confluence? What is your opinion as regards these 2 tools? Thank you in advance for your help!
@ScrumMastered
@ScrumMastered 2 года назад
Sprint Review is not something that we should schedule last minute. It happens at the end of every Sprint at the same time and on the same day to reduce complexity. You might want to figure out with the team and the stakeholders what time would work the best for everyone and keep it that way. It's best if the Product Owner owns the meeting in case they want to change the list of stakeholders since the PO has the best view of that. Re: tools for Retrospectives. I believe that Scrum Master should try different things if this can bring more value to the team. So trying tools like Mural or Miro can be great. As long as the team is able to work together, document their findings and follow up on them, why not try something new?
@NERIDA82

@@ScrumMastered I completely agree! I always love to try new things, just to give a wide range of possibilities and choose what works better! Thank you for your reply, much appreciated!

Well, that's going to be a journey, I think. You can start with a class and certification (not necessary, of course). If there are some soft skills that you can put forward in your resume, than that can be helpful. But I'm not sure that you can immediately jump into this position with no job experience at all, but you can look for some volunteer opportunities, maybe, to get the relevant experience.

I went out this morning and there were guys collecting rubbish/trash bins. I ran back inside and re-emerged with my Kanban whiteboard, and said to them "we can find a better way if you just look as this board. This is Sylvia to show you how to dump the trash and Lydia will talk horseshit as it happens" ...... I was smashed in the head with a spade. The rubbish got taken and put away.

With due respect, it's ironic that being a "coach" you are struggling to explain concepts clearly. So much being said, yet so little value being delivered!

@AxeVape, you mean 'teacher'? because 'coaching' has nothing to do with explaining concepts clearly.

Seems like a scam. Why is establishing scrum in it self a goal? And what makes the scrum master qualified for guiding anything? Not really clear to me what value a scrum master brings to the team?

@@ScrumMastered I mean, after the morning stand up I sometimes wonder what my scrum master does all day. Theres a refinement once a week but that doesnt seem to take a lot of time either.
@ScrumMastered
@ScrumMastered 2 года назад
@@erikm9768, why don't you ask them? :) But generally, my day would be occupied by working on some improvements (e.g. if something was brought up in retrospective, or based on my own assessment and improvement plan), getting ready for facilitation (such as facilitating a retrospective, it's not only that meeting though), doing some research on tools & practices, working with the Product Owner to help them with effective Product Backlog management (like discussing the roadmap, creating good goals, getting ready for a Sprint Review with talking points for stakeholders), preparing a presentation for a meeting with management to highlight challenges, preparing for a workshop or working session. If your SM is doing their part, they are most likely sitting in lots of meetings with management and even other departments to see what's going on. I often would spend my day walking around the office (oh good pre-covid times) to find specific people, talk to them about impediments or decisions made, create alignment, get or give some information. An example would be an "urgent" request (we-need-it-done-yesterday kind) coming from another team would trigger me going down the rabbit hole of who said what, who promised which dates, what does the PO think about it, what work will have to be moved back, who do we need to notify, do we need to talk to our Director or VP about it, why was this request a surprise, which processes we need to adapt to prevent this from happening again, etc. etc. Usually there is always someone who needs to talk to me. In pre-covid times, we had this desk next to Scrum Masters, no one was using it. So we would often have someone come over, sit down, and discuss a challenge / issue / concern they have. Kind of turned into therapy sessions at some point.... And another thing (and I know it might sound strange since organizations encourage 100% resource utilization) - simply spending some time thinking. What can I improve? What can I do to make my team happier? Who should I reach out to? How can I resolve this particular problem with this particular person? What is causing my organization to be less agile? Honestly, sometimes my brain hurts when I get into this mode. But it helps me come up with great ways to help my team P.S.: on the topic of 100% resource utilization, I highly ecommend this video by Henrik Kniberg: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CostXs2p6r0.html

@paradiseoskar5733
@paradiseoskar5733 10 месяцев назад
Do you know what makes me angry? When you share wrong information with people who wants to learn something. Organizing the product backlog is not a task of a scrum master. Thats product owner's work. Read the scrum guide again, Missi. "Make sure that everyone has something to work on". The developers decide how many backlog Item they choose for their sprint, that's not your business. Who is saying splitting the work is your business? Again, the dev's decide for for themself how many backlog items they are working on. Your input is not needed and necessary. You don't need to split anything.
