Having dealt with my dogs tearing their ACLs (one dog was both rear ACLs and the other just one rear ACL), the vet told me once one ACL is torn, its a 65% chance the other will go within 18 months and that proved true with my one dog. I understand dogs and humans are different, but sometimes not as different as you might think. Depending on exact surgery, the ACL is usually reinforced meaning it will be stronger than original. The negative of that is that it will be suspectible to arthritis and tightening at an earlier age, but well after playing baseball years.
@Blabbin_Bout_Slabbin
@Blabbin_Bout_Slabbin 4 месяца назад
Thanks for adding this context! I wonder how that translates to humans, as you said, probably more similar than different when it comes to acl repair. You just hope that there are some more advanced rehab options for people that Acuña can benefit from.

Very sad day for baseball. I couldn't find an example of an athlete who came back from ACL in two separate knees. Klay Thompson had an ACL tear in one knee and achilles tear in his other leg and played two years later, scoring 20+ ppg. Acuna is still young also, kind of. Maybe move off of Acuna and get some more Ozzie Albies. I have a Topps Now green Acuna auto rookie that's going to be pretty tough to hold on to for much longer.

It may be junk wax era but it’s nice in a way because you could and still can get cards of your favourite players or one of the many HOF players from that time and you don’t have to break the bank. It’s tough to continue in the hobby like we used to and this is a good example with Acuna. The best sets of value or price on most of the exciting players have such a high buy in cost from time of release and for the average collector/investor, it is not worth trying to pull them out of packs. So you have to invest a serious amount of money to buy into them and there’s just too much risk for most people. 9/10 prospects end up losing the hype once they step on the big league field or ice in the case of hockey and many of them seem to be injury prone in the last 5-10 years. With many people living paycheque to paycheque at the moment and many influencers trying to stimulate the hobby I think the buy in point of anyone with potential is out of reach for most people. On the other side this is kind of a junk wax era in disguise because in the 80’s and 90’s you have too many prints from just a few manufacturers who had usually just 1 set. Now we have the illusion of rarity if you look at a specific set but we have to look at the whole and realize that there’s over 100 different sets of baseball alone being released. So I don’t see the justification of the cost in that respect because it might be rare in a single set but each rookie prospect of any given year is going to have hundreds of cards between all the different sets. So I’m curious to see how the values hold out in 5-10 years. I hope you guys can recoup some of the money you invested because at this point I think for Acuna, is probably going to become like Avery and the injuries will play a significant role physically and also mentally to the point that to most teams if the braves decide to eventually trade him, his trade value will be like his card value. Good chatting and thanks for responding. Not many RU-vidrs respond and maybe I’ll be able to make it to a live stream 🍻

Chris, no joking around today because I like Acuna too, but you opposed me on Andruw Jones for the HOF and now with this new injury to Acuna, I don’t see Acuna even getting close to Jones’ accomplishments. It’s unfortunate, but with Acuna’s injury history we definitely needed to see more consecutive seasons from him and now we most likely won’t. The only silver lining for the Braves is that they won without him before and they can do it again. I don’t think it’s hard for Atlanta to cover RF and his offense, but they need to get help in the rotation. Maybe they trade for Luzardo or make a move for someone like that. As far as to sell or not to sell the Acuna cards, I’ll say this. I’m a Lindor guy because I value complete all-around players above all, but Lindor hasn’t been playing up to his standards. That being said, everyone collects differently, which is cool, but I haven’t sold any of my Lindor cards and I won’t. I bought them because he’s my guy and as long as he doesn’t sleep with underage girls and as long as he keeps posting up everyday and playing hard, I’ll still be a fan. The talent Lindor has on both sides of the ball is undeniable and the fact he hasn’t gotten hurt for 9 years at the SS position says a ton. Knock on wood! Anyway, I strongly believe if Lindor had better players around him and/or was on a contending team, we would all consistently see the MVP candidate we saw him to be in past seasons. With this current Mets team, he’s almost expected to be an aircraft carrier, but he is not Yordan Alvarez. He’s a complete player and probably the best defensively at the hardest position to play. Being able to say something like that, even after 9 years, speaks volumes about the kid. In any event, shortstops are not supposed to be aircraft carriers. The aircraft carriers are typically your one dimensional corner outfielders and one dimensional corner infielders (like your boy Devers 😆). Anyway, all I can say is, if Acuna was my guy and I had purchased his cards because of that reason, then I most likely wouldn’t sell them. But I also collect for fun so investors would have a different perspective. I’m probably also the same age as you guys and I don’t like collecting vintage either. I used to collect in the 80s and the early 90s and 75% of those cards are worthless anyway. Besides, I enjoy following today’s games with today’s players. Rickey Henderson was my favorite player as a kid, but he’s not playing anymore. So what fun is that? 😆 We watch today’s players and we play fantasy with today’s players because it’s fun. Therefore, I think collecting modern is what’s fun as well. But again, I mostly collect for fun so I may be in the minority.
@Blabbin_Bout_Slabbin
@Blabbin_Bout_Slabbin 4 месяца назад
Thanks for the thoughtful comment! I hate to say it, but I think you’re right about Acuna not reaching Andruw Jones career - at least in terms of WAR. He’s already got one more MVP. I hear you in Lindor. The difference is lindor is still on the field. I like him as a player too. It’s a shame what happened around him last year. I don’t want to sell any Acuna cards, but I also have to be realistic. Even considering self a collector first, it’s painful to watch cards you own drop in value. ESPECIALLY if you start to feel like they can’t return to this value. I won’t sell a lot of Acunas but I’ll definitely move some. I still love the kid and I always will. Watching Braves games last season was probably the most fun I’ve had watching the regular season ever. I’ll never forget it.

Also, I’m just not sure a coach will be sending him on the bases. So a repeat season is unlikely. Maybe still a gold glove winner, maybe. The team survived without him in 2021 by getting very lucky with trades. They’ll need Kelenic to take that long awaited step forward. I love Harris but he’s looked more like a 9 hitter this season than a leadoff bat. They do have a deep roster and if Olson, Riley, Albies and Harris all wake up and start hitting, anything is possible. The pitching has been good enough to get it done.

From the 2018 class Acuna and Ohtani are the more dynamic players but because of injuries so far it's looking like Soto will have the best career from that class. I told my brother when Acuna came back from the 1st ACL tear that if he goes back to trying to steal a bunch of bases its just a matter of time until he has another leg injury. He needs to put his running game behind him for good when he comes back. He can still be a dominant power hitter.

I’ve been a braves fan since I was a kid and I’m 45 now. This makes me feel like my favourite of all time Steve Avery and if he didn’t get into shoulder issues I think he could’ve possibly given maddux a run for his money and surely would have out played glavine and smoltz for sure. I loved that whole rotation except Pete smith was only so-so for me. I am not heavily invested in Acuna but I am in Olson and I would love to pick up a few more gems of his and then would love to see him pick up his play from last year. Hopefully he can come back and make some what of a career because after Avery left Atlanta, I knew he was basically done. So the next question is does Acuna stay in Atlanta because he is sadly injury prone and I think after 2 knee surgeries, and what they had expected of him is over. No matter if he comes back next season, it has to be on every braves fan, investor, team mate, coach and owners mind will be is he going to be an asset to have to baby him or cut their losses and move on. A sad day for sure and not just for the sports card hobby/industry but mlb as a whole, players seem to be more susceptible to injury more and more each year and no matter who it is or what team, it affects some more than others but with this we have also seen attendance and tv viewers on baseball as a whole dropping because many of the star players are getting hurt more often.

Ugh. I know this is purely for selfish reasons but I sold my ‘09 trout in 2018 (dumb I know) but always held my ‘17 Acuna. Was REALLY hoping he’d kill it this year so I could trade the Acuna to get Trout back with minimal cash on my end lol. Oh well such is the nature of sports cards. On a serious note Acuna going down is so bad for baseball and a huge bummer.. hope he makes it back stronger than ever.
@etlnyr74
@etlnyr74 4 месяца назад
thing is with Acuna I've been through this and he will have to wear 2 knee braces and he will most likely have other issues with body,he will also miss the start of next year I guarantee it so I mean they won without him before so why even keep him move on from him he's damaged goods now..
@Blabbin_Bout_Slabbin

It’s heartbreaking for him, the Braves, his fans and baseball. He had a chance to be an all time great player, but I think that like trout, that window has closed.

Baseball cards are not investments … all these podcast breaking down stats and comps don’t mean anything when a player can literally break a leg Tommorow … spending thousands on these cards are laughable thank God any decent Acuna card I got was FREE

If I was the Braves I would go ahead and spend money on a better defensive outfielder with power. Trade Ozuna at the end of the season and make Acuna our DH. I sent off a 2018 Topps Gallery Blue border 25/50 to PSA a month ago. Now I kind of regret it
@Blabbin_Bout_Slabbin

@@bamapaul2736 I don’t think they have to be that radical. Just move Acuna to left. Kelenic is a great outfielder with a canon, he’ll be good in right.

how about stop wasting big $$$$ on players that have injury issues and have only been in the league a few yrs,buy vintage,Braves won the world series without him so they don't really need him yes he's a good player but next man up move on....

Braves definitely need him. Caught some lightning in a bottle back in 2021. I mean, Eddie Rosario is sub replacement level now. It’s never exactly smart to invest in a player who’s been injured, but with tantalizing talent like Acuna possess, it’s hard not to.
