Car tip: when you get a low oil pressure light, what do you do, can you keep running the car? do you have to turn it off right away ? what's the right thing to do.

Reading through the comments, i notice that many of you have a problem with the oil light coming on while at a stop or idling, but goes away when driving or accelerating. This has got nothing to do with the oil pressure sensor or low oil level. The problem lies in your oil pump. Your oil pump is not pumping like when the car was new. But this is not bad. As long as the oil light goes away when driving, that means enough oil is circulating through the engine and you won't have a problem. So don't worry about the light coming on at a stop, as long as it goes away when driving, then you fine.

So we went to the dealership site. And low-and-behold it actually made sense for our situation! I was driving very very hilly roadways, honestly ACDC you shook me all night long! Song came on and my husband and I laughed and sang the song. What was said bySuburu dealerships is that the trouble ⚠️ come on in this case. And it’s true. After I pulled over on flat and let the engine cool some the light went off....3 times. So I’d still suggest going to Vintage Torque Fest!! Ha ha

I have a 98 s-10 I just had the oil changed and now it seems to slowly lose pressure as I stop. When i go again it goes up, but not to the pressure it was, By the time I go the 14 miles to and from work pressure is at zero. When I put it in park it goes back up to idle pressure.

Hi, Sir! I just recently bought new battery for my car. It turned out that the battery that has been replaced was overcharged, so I had the alternator repaired at the shop. After that, when we start the engine and was about to leave, the oil pump indicator came on screen. I actually do not have any idea about these and if it it was related to the alternator. I thought it was the oil pressure sensor, so I replaced it, same problem . I tried Motor Medic engine flush and it worked . I believe the oil pickup tube screen was dirty.

I just got my car out of the garage after new ECM installed. "Change Oil" light fashes. I have good oil in it. I changed it myself. I'll change oil again, but it only has 1200 miles max on old oil ( Pennzoil Platinum 5/30. I drive a 2003 Saturn Ion with 270k on it.

Mine happened recently when the Oil light sometimes turns on, the problem was Oil Pressure Sensor leaking oil and not working properly so bought a new one and replaced by mechanic and the problem solved.

If the lights disappear a few seconds after starting the engine, then its very possible that its just a cluster light powerup test to make sure that those lights are actually working.

My oil light only comes on only at a light. I replaced oil switch and was fine for a week. Was told pump still working a week later I went over a hump in a parking lot slowly and I heard a big bang. A day later the switch light came back on but only when I press the brake at a light once I strat driving again comes back off.

I have a 2016 Subaru Crosstrek with 96000km on it. The low oil level light was on (yellow one) two days ago, but I didn't stop immediately. Today I used the dipstick and found it at the minimum mark, could I drive it for another 7k to buy the engine oil?

It would be better to top up the engine oil as soon as you can. Please note that in most cars, the minimum oil level on the dipstick means a loss of 1 or 2 liters of oil. So, in your case, the minimum level means that the engine lost about 1 liter of oil. With all of that said, if it was my car, I would not drive it, I would get a liter of oil from subaru and top up the engine oil before starting the engine again.

Stop the car, dont run the engine. Don't drive. It's not worth it... check the oil level.

Hi I have a question my oil and battery light came on after driving I checked oil is good it started dying on me while driving slowly and felt kinda shaky but both lights came on had to turn off my 2004 Honda Accord lx & once I turned it back on it was okay then the lights came back on and started dying luckily I was a block away from my house would it be the alternator?

It is possible. Check the alternator and battery voltage (you need both readings, alternator is read with engine on, battery is read with engine off) if the alternator is below 13V then you may need to replace it. If the battery and alternator are below average reading (average reading for battery is 12.5Volts, alternator average is 14Volts) then its very possible that you need a new alternator (garages normally advise to change battery and alternator together) Before proceeding, just make sure you have sufficient oil in the engine by checking the oil dipstick.

I have a 2001 Mercedes c class cdi 220 which has a full oil capacity of 6.5 liters. When I cold measure it on a very slight incline nose up it shows 6.1 liters and when completely straight it shows 5.5 liters. I have never had the oil light come up during driving exept one time when I drove nose down a very steep hill had the computer telling me to add 1 liter of oil. When that happened I drove to straight ground level turned the car off let it cool for 10 minutes and checked the oil level again and it showed 6 liters. This engine unfortunately does not have a dipstick so I only have to rely on the computer instrument and the sensor located on the oil pan . How low should the oil level fall before it reaches a critical level ? What would be the minimum oil level before any damage is caused. Should I add more oil to top it up ? I do not want to overfill it though.

The only way to get an accurate reading would be to drain the oil in a clean container, measure it, then put it back (or if the oil is old, then to replace it). Did you get the low oil pressure light?

@@CarInspected I have never gotten the red oil pressure light. Just the dashboard reading " add one liter of oil " when I was driving down the steep hill! Maybe the sensor at the oil pan got triggered when the oil flowed away from it as the nose of the car was tipping down.

The last 2 days ive been driving to work at 7am and the engine light comes on after 1 minute of driving but then goes of 1 min later and doesnt come back on again so the first day i put oil in and it happening again the next morning but been fine all day after that took it my local gargae he said the oil level is a little high now but it could also be because its very cold in the morning its taking a bit longer for the oil to go through the engine is this right or should i get a thorough check?

What kind of car is it and what's the engine ? Some engines have sludge problems that can clog the oil sump or oil passages inside the engine. But first, you may want to check the oil pressure switch and wiring to make sure it's working properly.

I was driving tonight and all of a sudden my peugeot 2008 started beeping with the oil pressure light blinking, the display also read: ”Warning engine oil pressure”. We googled it quickly and saw that we should stop immediately and call the tolling service. We had about 30km to get home so I called my dad in a panic and asked him what to do and he simply answered that the car had recently been checked and that we just had to keep driving till we got home. So we did just that. The beeping and blinking just got more frequent, all of the people we called during the 15 remaining minutes of the drive told us to stop deiving or else the car would explode. Can the car actually ”explode” from this issue?

I'm not aware of such a scenario. The most probable outcome would be that the engine seizes or have accelerated internal wear out thats can cause compression loss which can render the engine inoperable.

I cant believe people don't take this seriously. If you have no oil pressure you have to turn off the engine or its damaged in a few minutes it gets worse each minute.. in like 15 mins or less the engine be ruined.

I have a 2015 freightliner sprinter I change oil religiously ever 4 weeks as I am a courier and I clock about 1000 - 1200 miles a week. Van currently has 174k miles My struts were going, those were the original struts on the vehicle since it was made....those old struts caused vehicle to ride unbalanced...excessive leaning while going around corners..sometimes on the hwy while going around long curves..the oil light will come on..but then once I'm leveled out...and back on "flat" surface...light goes away... I replaced all struts yesterday 8/27/22 went around another long bend and light came on but immediately went off after about 10 seconds.... I'm wondering if it's a sensor or is it that the right amount of oil wasn't put in the vehicle 🤔 hmm while typing I think I answered my own question.... sounds like proper amount of oil isn't in vehicle...I'm going to check dipstick as I normally do everytime I get gas...to confirm then add a bit of oil to engine and see..😃👍

That seems to point towards the oil level being low. It's important to check the condition of the oil pan as well (visually look at the oil pan from under the car and male sure that it's not damaged or bent etc.)

Hello, i have an audi a3 8l 1.8 20v with low oil pressure i changed the oil pressure switch and it was fine for 4 days without showing low oil pressure on the 5th day i was driving to the shop and the low oil pressure popped up again and i heard a bang but i wasn't sure if it was my car i kept driving slowly trying to get home and i relised my car sounds like a diesel it was the hydraulic tappets making the sound i think there was no oil getting through the valves the car was sitting in the garage for 2 weeks and i turned him on again to hear if the tappet sound is still there, when i started the engine the tappets made the noise but after 20 seconds it was running normally. I did a compression test on all 4 cylinders and the compression is fine. On idle there is no problem but if i just accelerate the low oil pressure comes on again.. What should i do and is it still worth fixing the car or is the engine damaged driving with low oil pressure?

Based on your description it seems like the oil sump which is the pipe that takes the oil from the oil pan to the oil pump has an obstruction or is clogged because of sludge or something similar. The first step is to make sure that you have the correct type of oil and that your oil pump is functioning properly, and that your oil pressure switch is working. Then it's advisable to access the oil sump line to see if it has any obstructions.

In most cases, that's normal, when you see the light when ignition is on (engine off), it is usually a test of the warning lights, if the warning light is gone when the engine is on, then you should be ok.

If the oil light is on, then the engine is not providing enough oil pressure. It's NOT advisable to drive the vehicle.

Please do at your own risk. Please note that the engine doesn't have sufficient oil pressure when the oil light is on, which will cause internal damage to the engine.

Means the oil is sloshing around and the pump sucks air for a second. So you are just low on oil

So today I was driving and out of no where my car stalled then the oil light turned on when it happened. The oil pressure light comes on as a "light verification check" during startup. If the engine is running when the light comes on however, it's a different story...

Why does the engine stall? When you turn on engine ignition, most brands run a test the warning lights, so to have those lights on when the engine is not running may be a startup test which cam be normal for some car brands.

@@CarInspected Like what? I installed a new vacuum pump, nothing. I swapped in a new oil sensor, nothing. Oil change, nothing. I cleaned out the oil tray, nothing. Why does this problem persist? What else can it be?

Did you check the oil pump and its pressure using an external pressure sensor (tool)? It can be the oil pump itself or the wiring to the oil pressure sensor, it can also be sludge build up inside the oil sump. Does the light come on all the time the engine is on? What kind of car/engine and what mileage?

My light came on today as I was driving. I thought maybe I should turn off the car and let it cool down while I check. Dipstick shows that I have sufficient oil and my OBD2 isn't saying anything. Wondering what it could be. Definitely don't want to have to replace an engine. I had problems in the past with my dash telling me all sorts of errors and nothing would be wrong. Perhaps that was the case.

Is it a 325xi or M3? In any case if the light is on whole ignition is on (engine off), then it very likely normal. It would be a problem if the light comes on while the engine is running, or while driving.

You will need to check the oil level to make sure you have oil. And check the oil pressure while engine is running. You will also need to check the engine to make sure that it's running smooth, it seems, from what you're describing, that when you turn, the oil pressure drops, and that could be caused by many factors including, low oil level, dirty oil, power steering pump overloading the engine and dropping the rpm too low, and many other factors possible as well. It's best to start by checking the oil level, and consulting with a mechanic to take a look at the car.

hey man, thanks for the video. i think i have low oil pressure from a worn out engine. just bought it and the past owner blew a head gasket allowing coolant to leak into the oil and they missed oil changes so there's sludge everywhere. couldnt see this when i bought it unfortunately i only get low oil pressure at idle after its warmed up a bit. if im at a red light, can i put it into park to rev it up a few rpms just to keep the light from coming on? someone told me low pressure at idle isn't the biggest deal, since the engine isnt under much load. thanks again

Same issue with me, I purchased a 2002 Dodge Durango 4.7, the previous owner did inform me that it needed head gaskets replaced. Got the head gaskets done at a shop, heads milled at a machine shop, and the day I picked the vehicle up the low oil pressure light started dinging at me. Any suggestions?

wha'ts the mileage on the car?, first thing would be to check the dipstick, does it have oil?, if so, then take it back to the garage that did the work. There is either a wiring issue (hopefully) or a problem with the oil pump not providing enough pressure (either something not put back correctly, or something is obstructing the flow of oil). There are a lot of possibilities. Another thing to check, is to take a sample of the coolant once the engine is fully cooled off, to make sure that there is no oil mixed up with coolant (if oil is found in the coolant, then it could mean that the garage didnt do a good repair). Check oil level in the car before doing anything else. But this problem may not be related to the oil level or pressure... check voltage (battery should be around 12.5 and alternator around 14volts) and check the throttle valve, there are many other things that could be causing this scenario for your car, have it checked by a professional.

What if you get that light only when on idle? It comes off once I accelerate again. But once I'm on a stop light it turns back on.

It most likely means you have excessive bearing clearance. You could try to switch to a higher viscosity (thicker) oil to get a bit more life out of it. Anyway, you shoudn't be driving it the way it is now.

This method (mixing diesel and oil in the oil pan and turning on the engine for 30 seconds then flush out and put fresh oil and filter) is used to clean up the oil passages inside the engine, and oil sump (the bottom hose that takes the oil from the oil pan to the oil pump inlet). This is not recommended to be attempted unless by highly experienced mechanics.

I had the low oil pressure sign on when hard braking or making sharp turns. But it wasnt on otherwise. I drove about 100km with this condition before going for an oil change. The oil change guy said the oil was very low but it wasnt bone dry. Have driven another 100km since then and it seems okay. Hope I havent caused a lot of damage to my car. 2010 corolla, 202K mileage.

Car Inspected i did have a burning oil problem for the last 25000km or so. I normally change oil after 7-8k km. Now I think i should change after 5km and constantly monitor the oil level after every 1000km. I use regular oil. Got this car when it had about 120,000km and so far it hasnt given me any trouble whatsoever (besides burning oil). I am just furious at myself for not changing the oil 2-3 weeks ago when I really wanted to work/ school commitments made me neglect it. Thanks for help, lets hope for the best.

@@keeronshakya Different mechanics told me different reasons as to why light would appear. Although it didn’t do much in hindering the car’s performance but all of them suggested to keep checking the oil level and change it on time or even better change it well before it’s due . Hence I would suggest you to just keep checking the oil levels every week. It doesn’t seem to be a big of an issue until unless you feel like it’s effecting the car’s performance.

the oil and battery light come on when the engine is off but ignition on, it's not an issue. so if the oil light does not come on when the engine is running, then your issue is not oil pressure related. if the engine turns off when stopping in traffic, then you have a list of possible culprits, it may be transmission related, or intake filter/piping related, it may also be alternator or power distribution related.

@@CarInspected hi My car is Honda Fit 2012. I get the oil pressure light ON flickering very briefly when my car is in idle. It doesn’t happen when the car is in motion. It happens only when I stop at a traffic red light or when I am just idle. It doesn’t appear when I drive couple miles. I drive 15 miles to work and I start seeing when I am about to reach work. I just had my mechanic change the oil pressure sensor yesterday and spent $90. Today i see that light flickering again. Please help!!!

Old dirty oil can cause clogs in the oil distribution system which can lead to low oil pressure, however if the correct oil (for a specific engine) has been regularly replaced at the correct intervals (specified by the engine manufacturer) and the oil level is within spec, then it's very unlikely that the oil can get dirty enough to cause low oil pressure.

I've just brought a bmw 318i, the red oil light came on after 30 minutes of owning the car it drives great idles good bit juddery turning over when start it sometimes. It seems to come on when I stop the car and put it in neutral.. when I turn the engine off and back on its gone until I drive a bit and stop again.. its under warranty so will be calling the dealer in the morning but any suggestion would be appreciated!.

Check your oil level. If its very low, it can allow air into the sump epoch translates into the oil light turning on momentarily then disappearing... it can be also an obstruction in the oil sump or one of the main oil passages inside the engine (usually caused by sludge build up)... it can also be a failing oil pump (usually more probable for higher mileage vehicles)

Its highly recommended not to drive the vehicle until you find the issue. First things first, if you can verify that there is enough oil in the engine and that the oil pressure is within the spec for the engine, only then It may be ok to drive it (while monitoring the issue)

If the light flickers then it points to the following possibilities (list is not exhaustive): Oil level is very low Oil pump is failing Oil pressure switch/sensor or its wiring connection is failing Restriction in the internal oil passages, including oil sump (due to sludge, etc.) Depending on the make and model, and the usage of the vehicle (age, racing vs normal city/highway, or off road usage, mileage etc), you can start to narrow down which suspects to look at first...if high mileage, then oil pump or restriction in the passages may be an issue, etc.
