Star Citizen is an in-development multiplayer, space trading and combat simulation game. The game is being developed and published by Cloud Imperium Games for Microsoft Windows. An extended retry of unrealized plans for Freelancer, Star Citizen is being led by director Chris Roberts. The game was announced via a private crowdfunding page in September 2012, and was later joined on October 18, 2012 by a successful Kickstarter campaign which drew in over US$2 million. Pre-production of the game began in 2010, with production starting in 2011.
Star Citizen has become highly criticized during its long production process, both for the fact that there is still no clear release date and for the challenges backers who have abandoned the project have faced in receiving a refund. The launch of the game was originally anticipated for 2014, but was repeatedly delayed. In 2013, Cloud Imperium Games began releasing parts of the game, known as "modules", to provide players with the opportunity to experience gameplay features prior to release. The latest of these modules, known as the "Persistent Universe", was made available for testing to pre-purchasers in 2015 and continues to receive updates. After more than a decade in development, no projected date for the commercial release of Star Citizen is currently given.
After the initial Kickstarter ended, Cloud Imperium Games continued to raise funds through the sale of ships and other in-game content, and is now noted for being the highest-funded crowdfunded video game and one of the highest-funded crowdfunding projects overall, having raised over US$500 million as of September 2022. Such methods of generating crowdfunded revenue have however led to criticisms and legal issues surrounding the project. In addition to crowdfunding, marketing is now also funded through external investment, having received US$63.25 million as of March 2020.
Squadron 42, a single-player game set in the same universe, was initially announced in the Kickstarter as an included campaign in Star Citizen, but is now intended to be a standalone product.

One thing that really surprised me with the persistence in SC, is that people actually use the trash cans next to the food kiosks. Universal object persistence is one of those features that sounds way cooler than it is in practice. Yes, you can drop a water bottle in the forrest and it'll be there in six month, but who really cares if it causes no ends of troubles? Forget items that drop during "real" game play, just wait until trolls start filling the countryside and caves with crap and nothing runs anymore. There's a reason it makes sense to despawn items after a while, it might not be "realistic" but it's a cost/benefit trade off. Crashed ships being persistence makes sense, but for anything smaller the juice isn't worth the squeeze.

It sounds like a kind of baseline system that creates those community driven moments and legends. Imagine you hear a story down the grapevine of a MASSIVE haul that went down somewhere in a system and pirates and other opportunist race to find it. Or some long standing community member puts a “buried” treasure somewhere that’s worth an obscene amount. This sounds like the kind of thing that seems small but can make the game feel more alive Idk, just my thoughts on the concept

25:15 the reason it took you a little while to exist the atmosphere is because you didn’t increase you’re ships speed. You had it capped at 145-150, when it can go up to 2000+. To increase the speed, use the scroll wheel on your mouse to increase and decrease. You should see the red box next to your speed slide up or down, that will be the determining speed. And also use the thruster boosts by pressing the Shift key. This should greatly help when existing the atmosphere :)

In practical terms: 1. Mercenary missions = you fly to a bunker on a planet, exit your ship go down an elevator and kill the bad guys ( who are usually bugged and dont move or do anything :)) ( or sometimes to a ship and board the ship to shoot the bad guys - that was the coolest mission in game imo, when i was playing) 2. Bounty missions = you fly to a location and kill all the ships, or just the target ship 3. Cargo missions = you collect cargo from one place and deliver it somewhere else 4. Mining 5. Salvaging ( currently only if you pay real money) 6 trading = go to one location buy stuff and sell it in another location for profit ( or, most likely - for the profitable trades - you get shot down and pirated by someone else ) 7 you pirate the traders/miners/salvagers :) ( buuut usually you need to have more advanced ships that lock down the player or they will escape with quantum jump - you need to do some serious grinding or buy such ships with real money ) 8 random stuff Extra: Arena commander or Space marine = like a try out flyin and ranked PVP battle royale For anything below 3, you need to pay more real money for more advanced ships - or you do the first 3 missions x gazillion times ( with about 30%-50% fail rate due to bugs ) to be able to afford a ship that can do the other stuff

This game is very Second Life-y for me, and I didn't pick for it to be that way for myself, that's just sort of what happens when you log in because after the loading screen of entering the game, that's it. There's no more loading. Everything is seamless. There aren't those tell tale "gamey" aspects that pull you out of the experience. There's tons of bugs, sure and this isn't some VR game where you're lost completely and the brain is fooled, but from the moment you log on you are now in a world that existed before you decided to show up, where people are bustling around on their way to their next job or adventure. And there's no big story where your character is the chosen one, you're just some guy. If you want to load in and twiddle your thumbs you can do that or you can check out the available jobs and careers that are afforded to you. I think that aspect is why people spend a lot on the game and why it becomes "more than just gaming" to them, as Luke says. Full transparency I've spent around 1k in the game, some I regret, some I absolutely don't. I joined their subscription for 10/mo and did that for 27 months. That's 270 bucks I definitely regret. I spent about 165 on fps cosmetics that nowadays get lost when you die because they haven't developed the system for you to reclaim paid for items. But the money spent on ships I don't regret for one second. And all those FPS cosmetics I melted for store credit and got a new ship. The game is actually really good about letting you infinitely melt items back for their original credit so you can get something else rather than use new money. You will not be getting refunds though so you just need to know that going in. These are PLEDGES that come with digital perks like spaceships and armors. My advice is just stick with a starter ship and earn the other ships. It can save time to have 2 ships so if you MUST spend more have another, but past having 2 ships at any given time, there's no need to have more than that paid for with real money.

Or if someone is being a dick and blows your ship up, and you manage to sneak onto his. You hide and spend the next hour flushing his toilet repeatedly until he's out of water and screwed. A question that gets asked a lot by new players is "what's the goal" which I always find a bit surprising in the age of live service games and MMOs. I guess for me I've never questioned what the goal is because it's a sandbox / simulator. I'll happily play DCS or MSFS for hours and neither really have a long term "goal", neither does Eve, GTA Online, Rust or Elite Dangerous. Neither really have an "end goal" (beyond "don't die and lose all your shit"). It's kinda the thing that maintains replayability for me, being able to jump in and . If there was a singular long term goal, you'd be kind of over it by the time you've done. Hell I'd even be tempted to put games like Battlefield into that same line of reasoning - apart from the short term goal of winning the match unlocking new perks, there's not really a long term "goal" to the game.

GTA Online has a veryyy fleshed out world to RP in. Hand crafted 100km square map which despite being incomparably smaller then this world is so much "bigger" in a sense of life and atmosphere. Never played Rust but Ark is similiar and has clear progression and is very satifying progression. The biggest factor is these other sandbox games did people have to ask and ask for help on how to have fun in it? Not all games need an end goal. Minecraft the biggest game of all time doesn't but people can pick the game up instantly and see that this is fun. I think what this game lacks is a core mechanic that will make people actually stay and play this game like other open boxs. It will have a small dedicated fanbase but other than that, it will die unless big changes occur

Games like Modern Warfare are easy to describe WHAT you do, but there's no real why. Ephemeral dopamine is the best answer. In games like Star Citizen, you can describe WHY you do things - because the act of navigating the universe as a single person at that scale is immersive and compelling - but the WHAT is hard to describe because everything that's structured and in the game is SUPER basic. Deliver a package, done. Kill NPCs at location who are just waiting around to be slaughtered and attack you on site, done. Find a rock and turn it into minerals and go sell them. Pick up commodities and fly them somewhere else and sell them. Nothing in particular is a compelling WHAT, but the setting and method of doing those things has a draw that excites people. There will be a critical mass where the necessary features to indefinitely generate emergent content while fighting over resources, and at that point the WHAT will become more clear. At this point though, it's a huge premise of WHY without a lot of WHAT.

There are some quests that you can pick up that are quite the chain. And at the end of them you are confronted with a crazy ship to fight. So much fun with your friends. The events are crazy too. If you get the game you have to be ready for the bugs. But that being said I have had some of the most fun gaming sessions I have ever had in this game. Most of the ships you see in this video you can buy with in game currency. Once you get use to the game loop you can make money quite fast and earn whatever kind of ship you would like. One of the best things about the game is the community. The people who play are always willing to help new players. So if you do intend on trying the game make sure you find a current player. It will make your experience so much better. A lot of annoying bugs have easy work arounds and you just have to get use to dealing with them. I would hate for a new player to just go at it alone with no help. So please if you get it find a current player and I would almost guarantee they will help you get off on your adventures. I almost never play the game alone anyway. For me I play games to hang out with friends and this game is so much better with friends.

@@drawmelikeafrenchgirl Meh. I might enjoy working for SC. But you are mistaken my friend. I am just someone who has really had a lot of fun in the game over the years I have played it. There is no denying that it has its problems. But there is no other game I have ever played that comes close to giving you the feeling that you are in space and can go anywhere you want. I am not one of the backers that will stand up for the game and developers on every choice they make 100%. In my opinion they spread themselves thin on what they should be focusing on. And I can't stand that a good amount of their budget went to Hollywood actors just to boost Roberts Ego. I think almost no one cares about squadron 42 (the single player game they are working on). If I had things my way they would put 100% of their efforts into the PU. But just because I don't agree with the direction Chris has taken the game does not mean I think its a bad game. It really is incredibly fun when its working well. You would be surprised to see the money some people have spent on this game. I totally think that the game is worth the $45 to get into it. I think every dollar spent past that is up to how much enjoyment the game brings you. Think of SC like a hobby on its own like the video says. Any hobby costs money. And a lot of SC players buy ships accordingly and want to push the development of the game along. I personally have over the $45 into the game but I have almost 1k into league of legends too. And that game is free. But the time spent in the game is at this point I could only guess thousands of hours. Some people spend $60 on a game they only put a few hours into and never touch again. But I guarantee you if you got SC and enjoyed it. Even if you stopped for about 6 months. You would be excited about it when another big patch came. The game is constantly evolving and is getting better every year. Who knows what it will become. It is a game you will get frustrated with on some days and have the best time ever with on others. Much like league but for much different reasons. All I can say to anyone interested is they have a free fly week every year. The only problem I see with that is the servers sometimes have the hardest time during that week so you don't really get to see what the game can do. If you play during non peak times you might be ok. At the end of the day all I can tell you is for the fun I have had in the game it is worth well over the $45 to me. I am sure not everyone would feel this way. But you won't know unless you try. And I encourage anyone who wants to try it to find someone to show you the ropes that has played the game for a while.

@vorpalrobot
@vorpalrobot Год назад
It's not quite what you think, though players can cause issues if they're not careful with the tech. The server already tracked all objects. You could always chuck a gun on the ground and warp 50,000,000km away and come back 3 hours later to find it. The difference here is instead of keeping it in server RAM and thereby slowing the server down as objects are added, when you fly away the server writes it to a save file and unloads it from memory. If you fly back the server loads it back in. The reason they did this is they want multiple servers covering the same solar system instance, so any players on a server in that shard would be able to load up the gun as they got close.

I just couldn't help thinking of people littering the world with random junk, or doing so intentionally just to bog things down (not sure why someone would enjoy that activity, but griefing has been around for awhile). As long as they're taking steps to keep things from affecting stability and immersion, I'm glad they're adding it. Seems like there could be some practical benefits.

This is a game I have been enjoying for the past two years I think, maybe longer. It is fun and buggy for sure. The game really hits different when playing with others or just exploring the many things to do and see. It helps that it is one of the most visually incredible games I've ever played. For anyone getting into it for the first time, like Luke said, it has its cycles. You will get a buggy patch after a stable patch, continuously cycling as they add new features and change the game. It's gone tremendously far since I first started playing. I consider the state it's in rn as just short of being the most fun I've ever had on the game. Server issues are the hinderance rn. For context, when I first started playing, Quantum travel or hyperspace thingy, would make your ship zoom but leave you in space where you were sitting lol. It would also crash you into planets, crashes were so frequent you'd lose thousands, and space stations would occasionally kill you with their rings. Fun stuff. If you play, I hope you get the better end of the stick. Maybe I'll see you in game, dropping knowledge bombs on how to escape a planet.

The fundamental mistake that CIG makes is that in reality no game could ever have enough content to just keep going forever, however if you add a sense of travel and dimension in size beyond just one system via Stanton, this allows the player to use more imagination and role-play to put together a variety of scenarios on what they’re gonna be doing that gameplay session,that is the only way to keep this thing going with a sense of being refreshed in the players mind , but CIG stubbornly is focusing on making this more of a combat game basically. Many of their most grandiose ships are all about traveling the verse but yet they insist on this micro world in Stanton
@GoldenEagleXTND
@GoldenEagleXTND Год назад
Huh? They announced they're releasing a new system most likely before end of year. I do agree the explorations spect that a lot of the early ships were created and then almost abandoned for us not in-game and that is very disappointing, but they have been making strides with the persistence and adding in special locations to find. Coming along and finding a wrecked ship or remnants of a battle is one of the most interesting things for me, especially salvaging and stripping the ship/bodies of loot. It's an alpha and it will always be a game of what YOU, the player makes it. For most people, the most enjoyable gameplay loop, especially in the current state, is combat as it's the most functional and most immersive

A few things... You can fly much faster if you adjust your velocity limiter (mouse wheel). The Persistence does have some "clean up" routines, but there's a priority system, so ships are pretty much forever, but water bottles out on a planet will probably be cleaned up eventually (tests go well over 24 hours tho so far). Tricky part is staying in the same server until they do matchmaking. The vid is a little misleading on this so I wanted to clear things up. Very important: you can earn almost every ship in the game without spending real money. New ships are up for real $ on release but then are in-game purchasable forever in the next patch. There are FPS missions/merc careers, and if the server is solid (rare, sadly), NPCs can be fairly lethal. There's a whole medical gameplay career and consequences for getting injured (limping, blurred vision, cold / heat, etc.) Great vid and an honest look at SC's current state.

Every art form has moments where someone tries something truly outside the box and so far ahead of its’ time that it changes the nature of that art for everyone else.
