There are some quirky features on the 440. There is a small light bulb inside the driver's door lock. If you pull the door handle before unlocking it, the light will glow to help you find the door lock in the dark and to help thaw any frozen locks.

A nice video. I agree with the overall parallels between the Porsche 924 and the Volvo 440. Both cars are far better than the critics of the time claimed and both cars deserve a better fate than being scrapped. I am also convinced that car workshops in Denmark offer so-called "afvisningspriser" to customers. The garage is not interested in the job, but if the customer really insists, it will be stupidly expensive.

I'll comment as I watch the video. I used to have a 1989 440 GLEi. Yes, low power steering fluid will make the pump noisy. It does have a cable operated clutch. I once had a cable snap just as I drove off the ferry in Zeebrugge. I still had to drive all the way to Detmold in Germany in 5 hours but managed with clutchless gear changes. Watch out for the coil braking down. Will cause a hesitation and stuttering at low rpm.

As for undercarriage treatment.. I worked at a centre that does that in Nordsjælland. I can tell that there are a lot of those treatment centres that doesn't do a proper job, especially with the pre-treatment washing. If not done properly, the dirt and grime will collect moisture. So, that might explain how that wheel-arch rust came about.

In 1987 I purchased a brand new Volvo 480ES in the UK. I loved the car, but had so many problems with the clutch, with the auto adjusting cable snapping at least 5 times. After a few years I got fed up with it and traded it in for a brand new 16v Calibra. Obviously the UK 480ES was right hand drive, so had a different/longer clutch cable, but it might be worth checking the automatic adjuster on your 440 just in case it is similar.

To change the clutch pedal you have to move the ratchet pawl and push the adjuster I against the spring. Well, you might even have a little bit of Porsche in that 440. While the 1.7 engine indeed originated from Renault, IIRC Volvo did get some help from Porsche with engine management etc. - don’t know to what extent, though. While I have nothing against the 440, I do remember it as being a bit boring - especially compared to a contemporary 850 with its lovely inline 5-cylinder engine that just had more character. Still, it’s fun to see one these days when they seem to have been all but forgotten.

Looks like a good solid example👍🏼👍🏼 I had one ! 1.6 face lift, I had it from 2001 until 2005, it was a very good car. My friend owned it first, a car hit him on the rear left wheel, the impact knocked the axle 2 inches across!!t has a simple beam axle held in line with a track bar, this bent like a banana! The insurance company wrote it off and I bought it of him for scrap price, I took off the track bar and ‘boing’ the axle dropped into place, got a track bar from a scrap yard and hey presto it was fixed!! It gave very little trouble, the only issue I had was with the idle control valve that I eventually just replaced. Easy car to service, bullet proof engine and very economical especially on a long run. I eventually sold it to my brother and a year later he had a bad accident in it and it most probably saved him from very serious injury if not death!!! This time it was most definitely a write off.

Even if it was totally rotted out, you would get your money back by selling just the engine and gearbox, so good for you for at least giving it a chance to live a little longer. @@scottishcontentcreators Well, not really. Seppo's Saab has the B-engine, which was a (heavily) re-worked Triumph slant engine. You could argue that Saab's re-working made it a new engine, but it was a Triumph design. It was related to the Dolomite Sprint and Stag (if I recall correctly). Volvo, for instance, was designing and building it's engines 100% from a blank sheet. Saab didn't. Probably couldn't afford to. The 9000 was built on the Fiat/Lancia Croma/Thema platform, but I think the B engine remained. The later cars were GM platforms. Re-worked of course, Saab couldn't stop themselves.
