Thanks for the interesting Q&A! Another request for 2024…. I know you like hiking in the rain but how does one practically manage getting the tent up and dinner cooked and dry, warm clothes on when it’s raining? And any strategies for putting on all that wet stuff again the next morning! Does all your gear end up soaked after 2 days of this? Thanks again!!!

Oh great question thanks a lot. Yes would be a great topic. Not entirely sure I have nailed this but will be a fun one to research further. But I am absolutely a huge fan of a good old garbage bag in my pack to keep everything dry. After hiking in torrential rain for 7 hours I realised how darn useless pack covers are. Happy hiking and thanks for watching

Hi Kate. Lived listening to your Chat with some great questions and answers. My question is about the UL pack versus frame and back ventilation. As I want to be pack ready for any short-notice hikes, I walk daily with a loaded ordinary day pack and because there's no ventilation between my back and the pack, my clothing gets damp very quickly. I'm hesitant to buy an UL Dyneema pack for this reason. Do you ever have issues with this? Love your videos - they are a joy to watch because of your enthusiasm. I look forward to this year's content😀

I am also keen to hear more about this as I have the same issue and looking to upgrade to a bigger pack.

Hi Kate, absolutely love your enthusiasm I'm learning a lot from you! Right now I'm just trying to focus on building some fitness. The mind is willing! Thanks for fab content!

That’s epic so great to hear. Thanks. Do you have a plan for building your fitness as I get asked how to do this a bit and I don’t have a great answer other than to get walking even if it’s down to the local shops.

@@KateGrarock Well I'm def the person to answer this LOL. I don't like to be weight focused but the fact is I am a bigger person so it absolutely effects your cardio ability and how your body and joints feel. So to anyone who asks me I tell them I don't focus on speed, just completion. It's a real tough one because the VERY first thing anyone asks you when you go on a hike is how long did it take you. I refuse to answer. I just say completion. I also have to turn down people who ask to join me. For example I have a friend who would love to join me for hikes but she competes in cross fit. I would end up over extending myself and miserable and potentially injured trying to not look so unfit. The plus side is my dedication means I am improving! I alternate challenging walks with easier (flatter) walks with the goal to increase my distance. I've done a couple of 22km distances now, I don't plan to try to push further than that, just to find it less suffering haha! I seem to do ok with hills, hiking poles are a total game changer, stairs are the devil. I've also started carrying my loaded pack, people have started recognizing me in my local suburb which is both embarrassing and hilarious - doing it anyways! I have a goal to walk across 14countries in the next 3years including the TA (I'm kiwi) and the Bibblumen in 2025. I am rather ambitious for a new hiker! Thank you for reading!

Great video Kate! And I loved the one you did on the Stirling Ranges - similar conditions to those I've tramped in, in NZ. I'm interested in videos on food - how to keep the weight down on longer trips when you're carrying heaps of water. We're going to walk the Larapinta next July but very slowly - over 21 days, with some side trips. There's one section where I think we'll be carrying food for eight days and will have some high camps. We're women in our late 60s / mid 70s so yes - weight is a consideration. Thanks for all that you're doing.

Wow sounds like an epic trip. Thanks for the question I’ll add it to my list of vids. I try to aim for 700 g per day of food but 8 days does add up. I go for high calorie foods. Radix 800 cal meals would be good if you like the taste. They gave me a 10% discount code KATEHIKE if you want to try them. But I’ll try to do more into in a vid. Cheers

Hi, I'd love to hear you briefly just talk about the geology, flora, and fauna of the places you hike, like in the Sterling Range if you just mentioned the age of the bedrock, ancient ocean floor metamorphosed, the beautiful flowers and flaxes and shrubs ... and if you want to get fancy putting in a frame of the hike from AllTrails or something to give us context of what you're doing; start, end, campsites.

Thanks Kate for the talk... unfortunately missed it live but still good. I've just got back into multi day bushwalking and I'm finding my biggest challenges now I'm a little older is keeping warm (during winter) and making sure that I can be sure of getting enough water or carry enough during the day. formal camp sites with water tanks are great, but I'm trying to get out to some more remote areas where I'm having to rely on creeks or carrying water in. Would love some ideas on how you go about identifying water sources or deciding that you need to carry it in. I love your practical insights into both gear and actually getting out there from an Australian perspective.

Thanks so much Peter. Great points to touch on. I’ll put on the list and get thinking. I’ve just discovered wilderness wear they make epic thick thermals. I also love a high r val on my air pad 3 or more. But I’ll go into more details hopefully soon. Thanks Peter. Oh and I love camping near a creek or lake so you don’t have to carry water. I just treat it using my water treatment vid I did recently.

Hi Ellen and Kate thanks for making the video. I think you said something about looking to do some walking in Tasmania. I think you would love it. We are from near Newcastle and we have done more walking in Tasmania than NSW 😂

What’s your favourite canberra day hike? Also I’d love to see a snow camping trip in the future
@KateGrarock
@KateGrarock 7 месяцев назад
Yes I so wanna do some snow stuff. Thanks for reminding me. Hmmm I love big hole and bungonia but a bit closer I’d say I’ve really enjoyed doing different bits of the Canberra centenary trail - it’s nice to see different parts of the area. I especially love the bits out to the west near the river. I’ve found Uber super helpful for this so you don’t have to backtrack. I also love booroomba rocks and any of the short hikes up near mt Franklin.

Great question. I know there are a lot out there. It’s probably a personal choice but I love Avenza as you can get free maps. It can be a little clunky uploading gpx track files but it’s great in the field.
