you missed the most obvious reasons for maintenance purposes having easier access to the sprinkler system is better. Usually, the sprinkler system is buried under dirt and difficult to access. I added two donuts and filled with sand to make changeouts easier and provide better clearance around the sprinkler. I have to literally excavate the two I installed risers on because over a few years they had become entombed in dirt.

@@Andy_Humphrey ACTUALLY! I have an impact rotor sprinkler that I need to remove but there is a turn of sand and water at the base, so my metal key won't fit in the grove to unscrew the base of the rotor sprinkler. A car ran it over so theres a tun of water and sand down there. How would you remove the sand so I can get the key in the grove?

Don't do it. Install the sprinkler correctly instead. If you install the sprinkler head correctly and put a doughnut around it, you've installed the sprinkler head incorrectly. if you install the sprinkler head incorrectly and don't put a doughnut around it, you're going to have the same problems as someone who did, only cheaper. This is free advice that if you take, you'll save yourself the hassle of verifying, was very good advice.

Yup - I rarely ever see them in the wild, and never really why they were needed, until I learned how systems were installed back before I was born, lol.

@@Andy_Humphrey Yeah they make a small target 🎯 a big one literally... sprinklers don't just go back down so that mowers don't hit them, they go back down because nobody wants to see a bunch of spots in a beautiful lawn. If you think about it, how would a sprinkler ring add any stability or protection to a head? The sprinkler head is at least anchored deep and attached to a larger underground entity. A "do not" just sits on top, meaning the only use is to find a sprinkler that's not running... there is no reason to look for a sprinkler head without running it... and if it is clogged, it will pop up... if it doesn't pop up it would still be cheaper and easier to add another one by locating the pipe via another head or by searching the area until you hit it with a shovel... I could give 1 million reasons why they should not be used, but not one why they should. The only place a doughnut is harmless, is inside of a bed.

@@OGRH Only a guess, but before the use of the flexible riser, perhaps they'd more easily break, and the donut was born. Not sure, just a guess.
@OGRH

@@Andy_Humphrey that very well could be the reason they were born out of, but no sprinkler regardless of how it is hooked up would ever break under the normal conditions of the area for which it was intended. if I owned a supply house, I would sell them because some people would buy them even if they were told it wasn't a good idea, so it may as well be me that they get it from. Plus they'll be back soon for more products fixing all those broken heads. 😂 Somebody's gonna make money off of it. Not to mention, if that's what they're going to do anyway they are likely to get all of the other stuff they need from the people who carry them. I'll admit in theory it seems like a great idea. It sure as hell was for the guy with the concrete & the molds, and I will admit, it really does provide the homeowner with a sense of security, albeit false sense.

I want concrete donuts because my landscaper destroys the sprinkler head with their weed eater machines.
@Andy_Humphrey
@Andy_Humphrey Год назад
Geez. Buy a few and send them the bill!
@fpplsoftwashpressurewashin8757
If your sprinklers were installed properly, then perhaps the landscaper wouldn't destroy the sprinklers. But on the other hand, if your landscaper is so careless, then get rid of the company and find another that isn't so careless.

We have 8 stations and our lawncare guy is asking $500 to install the donuts for our sprinker plus materials. Is this reasonable?
@Andy_Humphrey
@Andy_Humphrey Год назад
Hi @WhiteTiger1969 - I can’t say unless I were to know how many sprinklers, soil type, etc., but I’d say that it probably is, unless, you feel you can’t trust him. Alternatively, you could ask to pay him for his time + materials after the job is done. Or you could do it yourself. Rates can range from $85-$150/hr.

Imo. Those things are just a huge upsell and just make a bigger target fir mower wheels to hit. And when they do get hit they just transfer the force directly to the plastic head and it breaks anyway.. now you need your contractors to reolace the head and a new useless doughnut.. again big upsale more money. The key to making you plastic lawn sorinklers last a long time.is.... to set the Sprinkler properly in tge first place.. they need to be set in tge ground perfectly right from the start. Straight.in line with the grade of the ground.. and A half to 1 inch deeper then grade.. if they are cocked sideways. Or sticking up above grade they will get damaged..! Its only a matter of time.. if tgey have doughnut around them they will get damaged.. again only a matter of time..when a head is set properly and the soil is thoroughly compacted around them.. they should be a half to 1 inch below grade when retracted.. being down in tge ground a half inch or so when they are off is what keeps them safe from damage..if they are visible / sticking up or have doughnut around them they will be damaged . Sooner or later they will get broken..tucked away below grade when not in use is the key to making them last..ive been installing irrigation for 40+ years and without a doubt proper setting of the heads is key..maybe ill start a online irrigation how to site once i retire..
