Good video. So called Blue or Brown Asbestos has a devastating lung clearance time. White Asbestos has a relatively short clearance time, the fibres are serpentine rather than short, straight and stiff. The point i am heading towards is don't live in crushing fear just because you did a patch repair on some 1980's artex ceiling a decade ago. Perspective is important. Just be cautious in future and watch youtube!!

Absolutely, the danger is cumulative. I.e. the more you breathe in, the more chance of contracting an asbestos related disease. You can compare it to smoking.. one cigarette shouldn't kill you, however the more you smoke, the more chance of getting a disease. Its the same with asbestos.

They knew this stuff was bad way before they quit using it.

They did. A British doctor was the first to discover the link between asbestos & respiratory problems. The first medical article on the hazards of asbestos dust appeared in the British Medical Journal in 1924.

It was also used in automotive parts such as brake pads, shoes and drums and I've heard that if you lived near a major road you have millions of fibres in your lungs.
@fibresafe3511
@fibresafe3511 8 лет назад
+Ian Cameron Thats true. Statistically we will all have asbestos fibres in our lungs. Expert Dr Roger Wiley recently claimed that the average UK resident, by the age of 40 would have circa 40,000,000 fibres in their lungs. That’s 1 million for every year of life. Hows that for scary?

I had no idea it was used in so much stuff. =x

We will all have fibres in our lungs, some more than others. Roofers are particularly at risk, but hopefully you worse the correct RPE / PPE.

Fibre Safe yes, good on the UK instead of countries like the U.S ignoring its health effects. i think the u.s simply used way too much and removing it all would be an economic disaster i suppose but the hundreds of thousands of people exposed. just rediculous people have known about its health effects since the 30s...

Asbestos is only dangerous if the fibers get loose into the air. That is a risk with many of these materials, but probably not all of them. Pretty sure you're not going to see any harmful dust escaping from bakelite, as plastic does not tend to crumble into dust when disturbed.
@fibresafe3511
@fibresafe3511 7 лет назад
Correct Neil. With plastics such as Bakelite, the fibres are bonded into the matrix of the material and its extremely hard to get fibres released from them.

When I was 18, crews of us made up of new sailors called Tiger Teams, removed the asbestos from the ships we were assigned to. I was on the Tarawa and when we hit dry dock in Longbeach, Naval Shipyard, that was our primary job. We wore overalls and regular medical masks(sometimes). The stuff was flying all around as we tore it from the pipes, walls and ceilings during a 3 month period. So far I haven't heard of anyone I served with getting cancer from that type of work which occurred in 1980-1981. When I try to research it, all I find are advertisements for law firms. I'm a nonsmoker with no symptoms and passed extensive military physicals up until 2008. Maybe we're panicking over nothing because there were hundreds of us just on that one ship alone.

+teejay Trujillo Asbestos was very common on vessels ans especially in areas used for heat such as lagging etc. Lots of countries around the world still use asbestos in production of their vessels, especially Asia. Hope all goes well for you in the future !

Old loft insulation from 1930 - 1970's can contain asbestos fibres, although it is quite rare. If you're unsure, get it tested.

@fibresafe3511
@fibresafe3511 7 лет назад
Yes possibly, get a local asbestos company to look at it.

well if you think your roof wont be drilled or dameaged or be exposed to dust.you dont have to. asbestos is only deadly if it gets brocken and its fibers are released
