Liverpool have been dominant under Jurgen Klopp. They have been both Premier League and Champions League winners, with a host of finals and other titles to their name in the 8 years that the German has resided over Anfield.
But they now find themselves in uncharted territory under Klopp, with stuttering Premier League form finding them well outside the top 4 and an early exit in the Champions League looming.
For some Liverpool fans the thought is unimaginable, but what could the red side of Mersey look like without the enigmatic manager in the dugout?

What Klopp's done with Liverpool has been incredible. Owners owe a lot to him and should've backed him more. Have a feeling it might be a rough few years for Liverpool fans with how the rest of the league is looking.

Football is kind of funny in how opinions flip-flop in a very short space of time and at times contradict each other. With Liverpool there are two very good examples of this. When Liverpool started playing the core midfield of Wijnaldum, Henderson and Milner, everytime they had a bad game or bad run the complaints would start. The midfield is boring and lacks creativity, look at Wijnaldum he only has 1 assist, they miss Coutinho (even though they got better after he left), they don't score a lot, where's plan B. So they bring in Thiago and try to turn Harvey into an 8 and also try to bring more control and a bit of creativity. Then the complaints were Thiago slows down play, Harvey can't defend, they miss Wijnaldum, and they need to go back to their meat-and potatoes midfield. The 2nd example is Sadio Mane. During that 2020-21 season, yes the injuries in defense took the headlines but one of Liverpool's biggest problems that season was upfront. The front 3 struggled a lot. In particular Mane. He had a spell where he scored 3 goals in 24 league games. People started talking about if he was done and whether it was time to break up the front 3. Now after he leaves, it's like, why did you sell Mane and not Salah? Football is full of a lot of Captain Hindsights. You are damned if you do, damned if you don't. Either way, it will interesting to see what Liverpool does next season.

The thing is a lot of the problems we have now we fans have been worried about since the 20/21 season. We also had warning signs last season as well and in a way we where lucky last season. Our players have put so much effort in but they just can’t anymore. Klopp needs to be backed when he’s asking for it because he’s done so well without the backing that the other clubs have had. If he leaves we will have big issues. FSG should have backed him while still on top. Just to give some perspective Chelsea has spent in 2 windows what Klopp has during his whole tenure.

The second wjinaldum left we needed a replacement. A robust pressing machine who doesn't get injured, and has some goal scoring ability. Maybe like enzo fernandez. We missed out on him. We should have got Tchouameni. We let him go too. Now Bellingham is available, and I doubt we are going to splurge on him. Our defensive strength depends a lot on our mid, and rn we need at least 2 high quality starter options in the mid. Defensive mistakes lost us the madrid game. Also, Naby and Ox should have moved on 2 seasons ago.

@@bhanuvedantam2413 We didn't let Tchouameni his options were Liverpool and Real Madrid and he chose Real Madrid. What I don't get tho is clearly we wanted a midfielder in the summer so why is it that when our first choice didn't come we didn't go for someone else. Klopp very clearly wanted Matheus Nunes from Sporting and he wanted to come but he went to Wolves because Liverpool never put an offer in. I will never understand how the club let Gini go when Klopp wanted him to stay and instead they kept Keita who should have been sold. On the nose. 2020/21 was bizarre bad luck in terms of injuries, but that highlighted areas in the roster where Liverpool were clearly vulnerable to bad luck, and would only get more vulnerable as key veterans aged. And looking at the birthdates of the roster back in 2019, it was completely obvious to me that the team would need a big injection of fresh blood by circa summer 2022. Klopp needed to bring 3-4 midfielders, 1-2 CBs, and a RB that he could rely on, over the last 4 transfer windows. What he got was Carvalho, Konate, and some academy kids. Not criticizing any of these players as individuals, but as a group they fall very far short of what Liverpool needed to stay top 3 in the league. The idea that it was inevitable Klopp would burn out his players and suffer a sharp dropoff is just garbage. That refreshing would be necessary was obvious years ago, and small dip during the transition is a very normal thing. FSG took a big risk by twiddling their thumbs on this rebuild, and that choice blew up on them. That is not on Klopp. The uncertainty mentioned in this video is all about ambiguity about whether FSG has a coherent plan. It would not have been unreasonable to try to do a rebuild on the cheap, but FSG wasted the last four transfer windows; they should have been bringing in a number of young diamond in the rough players for 20M or so, and seeing what Klopp could do to season them (and regularly pushing out players who are not cutting it). FSG seems to have avoided to the cheap route. Did they do that on purpose? Or are they just confused and pennywise & pound foolish.?

The 3 year cycle thing makes so much sense. He spent 3 years building a team to play his style while burning out the squad he had, and then in the next 3 years Liverpool's recruitment was very minimal or poor, only a couple of actual first team quality players. And now, because they haven't built the next team yet, they've burned out their second team and are rapidly trying to catch up. Only a handful of players have managed to stay fit (mostly) and at their best for both cycles (Firmino, Henderson) Would also explain why someone like Naby Keita who played so much high intensity football at Leipzig, has now just burned out completely since coming to Liverpool.

Klopp needs to replicate what Sir Alex did and evolve. When Ferguson’s United became predictable, he replaced his head assistant with Carlos Queiroz. Queiroz brought in new ideas and as a result, United went away from their rigid crossing 4-4-2 and played a more direct European style of football.

Fergie also moved into more of a Zidane-type role, as chief selector and overall manager of a team of coaches. This was sort of forced on him by changes in the game that he couldn't keep up with. What was incredible for such a self-confident guy, is that he recognised his own deficiency. Not many with the drive to make it as far as he did in the game also have the capacity to judge themselves that critically. Not sure the game has gotten beyond Klopp and not sure he'd recognise it if it had. He may not want to bring in new people to whom he'd give a license to change the way Liverpool play substantially from his own approach. I think Klopp is facing a different problem from Fergie, really. It may simply be that a major change in playing personnel can allow him to renew the style with which he has been successful. I'd definitely give him transfer resources and another season to figure it out, if I were Liverpool.

Liverpool had a lot of problems this year that would break other teams as well. - playing for 4 trophies and winning the two minor ones while losing the premier league again behind Man City by 1 point and the champions league took a massive hit on players mentality - heavy injury list throughout the season - bad form of key players - ageing midfield ? - Klopp is too loyal to players who dont perform well - their heavy metal style of gegenpressing was just a slow latino salsa this year

Imagine they’ll be a top 6 team for 1-2 years rather than just a top 4 team. Gonna need new faces for sure. I also don’t know if it’s just simply possible that hard pressing is becoming outdated, or at least predictable and when the combination of aging players, maybe a stutter in passion, and predictability… And a young striker… Im not surprised at all to see liverpools downfall

Although liverpools season has not been the greatest, they have had to push with what they have due to MANY injuries. They have brought up young players have have been doing well in their academy and have help shape them with the qualities of players on the bench or starting lineup. They have many holes to fix but without our full healthy squad we have been lost Nunez and Gakpo are really hot and have been goal scoring. We got back jota, virgil, fabhino, and more will come. We are far from done, our team looks good! hope we get Bellingham and strong midfield players

Klopp should be the last person to be moved from Liverpool. At the peek Liverpool ruled the world, won practically everything or finished as a runner up. He is among the top 5 managers in the world, he deserves players of the same calibre. Name any manager who's been at a club for 7+ years with continous success. You can't, there are ups and downs. SAF had ~20 yrs of success at ManU how did he do it? -The game was less demanding, owners were patient -Wide squad, rotation to keep fresh & motivated -Tactitcal variety not to burn out players -Periodical squad refreshments by transfers for new impulse, energy, motivation -Financial and managerial support from the owners He wasn't winning at every season but was the most successful manager in the long run. Today Guardiola is similar at City but he has all the money of the world to change the squad like you change your clothes. He has the deepest squad who are always hungry. Klopp can't do that, it's irrealistic, but if he gets the mindset & support of SAF he can be the most successful manager of Liverpool's history

There's so much investment in premier league atm because in a few years time you will be able to buy virtual season tickets and watch games live on a vr headset with 360 view. You do have to keep in mind, the previous season was not only filled with injurys, they played every single match in all competitions they could've, 3 cups and the prem, the team is most certainly burned out and needs to take some time to get back to form again, they gave everything to try for the quadruple, and are the closest a prem side has ever come to it

The not so good teams have found how to counter attack Liverpool well now. They counter attack when the full backs are caught up high. I guess Koop has to Learn something’s from Guardiola on how to control the game. Klopp adopting Guardiolas style of Inverted Full backs has turned the season around the season. Not a coincidence that Guardiola and Arteta are playing the same system and are doing so well. But Guardiola is the creative Genius and has invented this. He has been hacked thoroughly also from Man City. Unlike Klopp who has had to keep balancing the books and looking at profits.

The moment Liverpool signed Darwin for 100 mil and let Mane go to Bayern for under 40 mil I knew the end was near... VVD is not the same as a few years ago.. He was always a risky signing for so much spent on a CB.. And their midfield is aging and has little invention ... They are in serious trouble especially if the purse strings open for Newcastle next year..

He can't rebuild a team? He was doing it basically every few years at Dortmund when Bayern and others would come around and poach their best talent. The issue is Dortmund had a great academy system that he could use and the owners were willing to spend the money they got from transfers. FSG don't seem to want to spend a penny that isn't already accounted for in the clubs revenue which is madness.

Look how many players were out injured and are coming back. Players like Keita, Ox, Thiago, Arthur a sudden guest will sideline them for extended period. Improve that side of things, sure you can raise 4-600 million and buy 3-4 players, move a few on and still end up with the same or more injuries. Look at city, less players injured and they're rotating from game to game and using all their subs.

I think what this video misses is that a FSG sale of stakes in Liverpool is likely more to do with investments elsewhere beyond Liverpool. There's been rumors and rumblings of an expansion of the NBA in a couple of years after a new television rights contract is sorted out. FSG is the favorite right now to purchase that franchise allocation, which would in theory be a multi-billion investment.

FSG operates on a basis where the club has to be self sufficient. Instead of spending money on transfers we’ve spent money on improving the training grounds, expanding Anfield, and paying our players a huge wage sum. These are, for the most part, long term investments that will benefit the club long term, but it looks like we haven’t been spending much recently. Who knows it will pay off in the short term though

The problem being Klopp style of play really is tiring for players now imagine doing that for YEARS + all the lack off investment to at least have a proper squad to rotate and allow key players to rest more often, with the lack of investment it was a matter of time for it all to come down crashing
@ComradeOgilvy1984
@ComradeOgilvy1984 Год назад
It is quite manageable with the right kind of roster, and a disciplined rotation. There are senior players that I do not want to get rid of, but Klopp should avoid playing more than 90 minutes per week: Henderson, Milner, Thiago, Fabinho, Matip. (That is a lot of names!) I am seeing the signs that Robertson, Firmino will be joining that club soon. In a couple years, add Salah. It is not rocket science how to deal with this. Bring in younger legs. There might have been hopes that Thiago, Ox, Keita, Jones, Elliot might fill the shoes of Wijnaldum and our aging captain Hendo, but that has not worked out. The answer is not to do nothing. The answer is to bring in new players, and trim the squad when players cannot cut it.

The refusal to stop playing a high line when you have slow midfielders is what's costing Liverpool so much. Then again, Klopp has never been a pragmatic coach. I had a nagging feeling from 2020 onwards that their midfielders were too sluggish to suit a high intensity counter-press, which is what made them so effective in the previous years.

Not sure why Klopps future is being portrayed as uncertain, it's not. As for playing style Tifo itself has highlighted the move towards a more creative midfield, so I would suggest that the issue of playing style for the future revolves around whether the club can bring in the players to make that work.

Klopp is at the top of his (or anyone else's) career plus he's a team-oriented, not a career-oriented person. It's not for Klopp to do the rounds of Premier League teams in the style of Jose Mourinho (The Special One). His only moves could be the German (or maybe another major) national team (not currently up for grabs) or some mega-lucrative American deal à la Jürgen Klinsmann, which may be more money, but much less Klopp. He does need to reframe LFC, he does need the likes of Bellingham, and I buy it that he knows and wants this. I hope that FSG also knows and wants this. Very worrying that such senior figures are leaving.
