Well there’s been quite a few almosts in the past several years; Monaco 2017; Ajax 2019; Villarreal arguably last year against Utd and this year in the CL. But if you are trying imply them ACTUALLY winning the CL, then I can only foresee it becoming more difficult for such teams to do it again with every passing year.
I guess like Mourinho and Ferguson before they achieved it, we won't know who the man will be until he arrives, it does feel like France are overdue a top class manager working his way up though, so I'd look there first
I don’t actually think Sakho was all that bad. He put in some very good performances but was also inconsistent however that was a bugbear for the entire defence for a long time. As I understand, Klopp rated him and planned to keep him as a regular player but that changed due to Sakho’s attitude and disciplinary issues that lead to Klopp wanting him gone.
@@tonytynebridge510 That would be a very advanced transfer strategy for that era at Liverpool... I'm guessing they had a bunch of defenders in a hat and pulled one out
One of the common reasons that's often given for Ancelotti not getting as much credit as other elite managers is that his teams lack a distinct style of play compared to say a Guardiola, Klopp or even a Mourinho side. Is this actually true or is there a secret Ancelotti-ball that isn't recognised by most pundits?
Speed in attack. Sort of counter attacks without counter attacks. When your players are noticeably faster than the opponent, you can create counter attack like overloads by simply running at the opposition. His teams usually have some excellent passer further back. And really fast forward line. Pirlo/kaka, Xabi Alonso/ Bale and CR7 and now Kroos/Vinicius
Carlo is all about managing best out of the current squad he never really changes them completely his philosophy is not tactical evolution but something that suits the squad more than that
Question: How do clubs and the FA actually decide if kits clash or not? To me it seemed quite ridiculous that in women's FA cup final City and Chelsea could both wear blue, but in men's FA cup final when Liverpool wore Red, Chelsea had a yellow kit instead of their Blue home kit.
@@j.s3300 interesting, maybe I chose a bad example, but there have been multiple questionable kit clash decisions made recently like sometimes stripes Vs stripes isn't allowed even though the stripes are totally different colour.
I remember also there being a game I saw highlights of recently where one team was in dark blue and the other in light blue but that was apparently fine.
Could be BS but I remember hearing that it has to do with being able to tell the teams apart on a black and white broadcast. So light and dark blue would be fine since they would look different, but dark blue and dark red look quite similar so someone's got to change.
Could you compare the output of opposite footed wingers (left foot on the right wing) vs. same footed wingers (right foot on the right wing)? Obviously the game has evolved where both can coexist as inverted wingers, just wanted to see the effectiveness (creative or goalscoring or otherwise) of the foot these inverted wingers use?
good luck, they swap wings possibly mutiple times in the career and positions, to differentiate you would need to input stats from all wingers game by game......
Question: Which players would benefit most from travelling through time and playing in a different tactical era? For example, is there a current “luxury” playmaker who struggles with modern high-pressing football, but would have flourished in previous tactical eras where there would be less expectation for them to defend? Or are there players from the past that would suit the modern game well?
How did conte exploit sides like City and Liverpool this season and could this translate to lots of success in europe against more traditionally dominant teams?
what statistic isn't currently available, but could revolutionise football analytics in the next few years? (eg. england rugby coach eddie jones recently complained that there weren't enough data gathered to assess the effectiveness of his players' off the ball runs, and intimated he was going to try to push for analytics people to design metrics that would capture that, so like, is there anything similar you'd like to see in football?)
Great question! Off the ball movement ratings would be interesting, wonder how they'd do that. I think something to track defensive actions better would be good. Maybe identifying "expected fouls/bookings" might make shift tactics
Cut inside for a shot so they can additionaly become strikers , also by cutting inside they can give way for rwb or lwb , they can also create overloads with striker effectively dragging backline , now compare this with giggs and beckham like traditional wingers , they are mostly fixed to the wings and they mostly provide crosses to the two strikers , that was their main task
If the red bull franchise were to buy an English team, becoming RB London for example, who would be the most likely team they would buy and how long would it take them to be good?
Personally, Southampton would've made sense. Maybe Brighton and Leeds now. Regarding Leeds, there were even some talks 2 years back. Making them good (consistent Top 4) would probably take about 6 years. If they want a higher profile team, Leicester and Arsenal would make sense. Making them a consistent Top 4 team would take 3-4 years for Leicester and 2-3 years for Arsenal.
@@azlankhan4172 Absolutely no chance a team of Arsenal's standing and brand value would sell out to Red Bull. I think you'd need to look much lower down the table (or leagues) before you'd find a team that would completely abandon their name, badge, history, etc. for energy drink money. Derby County might be in a spot of hot water and could do with a bailout - perhaps that would be worth a shout.
@@azlankhan4172 None of these teams would sell out their historical identity, theyd have to start small like the other RB teams, a league 2 team is relatively the same coefficient as when they took over Markranstadt (Leipzig)
You kinda skipped the massive gamble LFC took in 17-18. The ridiculous money that PSG gave Barcelona for Neymar that Barcelona gave to LFC for Coutinho (£113 nett) that LFC then spent on a CB & a GK (Fabinho & Keita were already paid for). For most managers its counter-intuitive to sell forwards to buy defenders, but Klopp used this to transform LFC’s playing style (high-line) in a way that most commentators said would fail. However, the planned introduction of VAR for offside at that time benefited this playing style and was anticipated by LFC more than other clubs. The exploitation of change has been the key to LFC’s recent success something that Klopp is part of & a key driver within, but is not the sole instigator. Otherwise you’d be looking at the Dortmund v Madrid CL final this year & asking how are Dortmund so good?
Question: Ball controversy used to be a recurring theme of international football reaching a fever pitch with the Adidas Teamgiest at Germany 2006, but how much influence does the design of the ball have on the game itself?
Question: With the seasons ending now - How do teams prepare for the coming season? Are there strategies for pre-season? - E.g. Rest (longevity) vs. hard training (good start to the season) Is there significant difference in preparations from "top of league teams" to "bottom of league teams"? Is it possible to measure if pre-season has been successful? With the World cup starting in November how does that impact Pre-season preparation this year?
With the season coming to an end and the summer break fast approaching, I was wondering how long it had been since players have had a proper break with covid and all the euros, how can a good break affect a team and individual players performances?
The british and exclusively football version of My Brother, My Brother and Me. Joe acts like the oldest, JJ is the youngest, and Alex fits that middle child role to perfect.
Hi TIFO. I want to aks you why Barcelona have 152 thousands strikers and apperatly also want Lewandowski according to The Atletic. What will they do with them, who stays and who goes? Thanks chaps
QUESTION: Can you do a video on Brendan Rogers’ success at Leicester, building on Puel’s foundations, the downturn over the past 12-18 months and how he can take Leicester back to competing for the Top Four?
you can simplify Liverpool's recent success to one thing. The 75 million spent on VvD. Klopp had all those other players, but they were shipping goals. That one purchase enabled his style to actually work consistently.
I really want to know why joe always says the number of the question twice. I'm dying to know! this is an amazing series and you do a lot of great things with it but that question drives me crazy
Question: How different would football be if the objective was to accrue xg, and not goals? Would you need goalies? Question 2: Do teams really play better near the end of the season when they have 'something to play for'? Or is this just an idea to suit the narrative?
Question: When did inverted wingers become a thing? From memory, Robben started at Chelsea playing on the left, and then at some point in his career switched to cutting in from the right. Is there anyone (either player or manager) who could fairly be described as having 'invented' the tactic?
@@DICECLUB and I know people like George Best were comfortable on either side too. I only mentioned Robben as I particularly remember him making a definite switch when it became more popular again in modern football. Still curious who the actually first to do it was! 🤔
@@stephenpalmer9375 it’s interesting how football works in cycles isn’t it. Like how with Atletico Madrid (and even Pep a bit now) getting success going back to somewhat of a 4-4-2 again!
@@WizardWallis which kinda makes sense, cuz you invent tactics B to beat tactics A, then tactics C to beat tactics B, and then you realize that A can beat C with some tweaks...
Does David Moyes have the potential to take the next step with West Ham? This has been a very successful season, but is this the peak or is it the start of better things to come?
It is a bit maddening seeing the stat from one of your earlier tifo football videos that the average time the ball spends in play in the PL is 59 minutes. If this is the case, how is extra time currently calculated?
Question: Given Joelington's transformation moving into midfield, should Liverpool consider playing another former Hoffenheim striker in Firmino as an 8 next season given the competition up front? Question: Has Van Dijk lost pace since the knee injury?
There is one other reason about the centre - I was listening to an interview with a Liverpool player (gerrard maybe) and he was talking about Benitez or houllier. The reason he gave was something like - a centre kick usually comes from a disappointing moment (a goal) and so the idea is to implement an automatic movement to reset the mindset and get back to square one mentally rather than “thinking about what to do” which might be harder after a scrambled action.
Question : Who is a good Fernandinho replacement? Matheus Nunes - sporting Ryan gravenberch -If he dosent go Bayern Frankie de jong - Barca Florian grillitsch -Free Boubacar Kamara - Free Romeo lavia - Academy Any of these or do you think they should go for someone else?
Question: Rory Delap's specialization in throw-ins used to cause chaos in the box, would a similar player and tactic work in the Premier League currently and which team would benefit most from it?
Personally I think it might work even better now, as footballs gotten more technical and ground based most teams have gotten smaller, and ability to win aerial duels has become less necessary in defenders, I've also noticed one of the main places the big teams concede the most is at set pieces in recent years (Man City are very guilty of this) I think it might be because the systems that teams play now are much more specialised, they're spending more time on shape and movement in training (rightly so too for the most part) and thus less on deadball situations, if I had to pick a team to do it with then it's undoubtedly West Ham, they've 2 big physical strikers in Antonio and Scamacca, Soucek in midfield and similarly aerially dominant centre half's, they're perfect for it, Moyes is the man to implement it too, I'm sure we all remember the dread of his 2000/2010s Everton team getting a corner against your team with the Fellainis, Duncan Fergusons, Distins and Cahills of the era (amongst many others) I honestly reckon if they could implement long throws they'd get the Champions League place they chased last year with relative ease
Question: How good Bruno Fernandes is? If he is? Does he do more damage than he ends up creating? We sure get the high risk high reward thing, but isn't it (what he does) detrimental to the flow a team has? His lack of ball recycling is very visible against top teams. especially.
Yeah that's one of the questions I have as well. Even though I like his creativity and his mindset to push the ball forward but out of possession he takes rash decisions, pressing vehemently when not required and looking tired/uninterested when it is really required.
Liverpool have been linked to some young mids in recent months, most notably Tchouameni and Bellingham. Stats Wise as well as in terms of play style, who would you say fits them the most?
I think to add on from JJ’s golf reform and make it more involved in the game. Obviously in normal golf whoever is furthest away takes the shot next but in full contact golf (place holder name) it’s a free for all and so then you could stop whoever and first to their ball takes the shot. Essentially taking all the gentleman out of it and making it carnage. Just imagine on the green Someone going for a putt, the amount of pressure he’ll be under just knowing the other 2 are behind him ready to tackle. Chuckling just thinking of it.
Question: What happened to Stoke City? A few years ago they had Shaqiri, Bojan and Arnoutovic and were challenging for Europe. Now they're a mid table Championship side.
they lost faith in Tony Pulis. And lost the Premier League money. If you don't get the promotion from the Championship in the first two years? It's such a competitive league that it is easy to get mired down there
@@stephenpalmer9375 They had 4 years in the Premier League with Mark Hughes after Pulis where they finished in their highest league position for two years running (9th). It's turned into a poorly run club for me, bad recruitment, no identity and no ambition any more. I would like to see Tifos perspective on it.
Question: Paul Pogba confuses me. There's a huge difference between what pundits and writers say about him (even when criticizing him) and what I've seen. Granted, I'm a liverpool fan, I don't watch many man utd matches and more likely to watch highlights if they've done badly. So what are the supposed strengths of Paul Pogba, is he as good as some pundits think or as bad as I think?
I know what you mean. In my experience it depends if he's playing for France or Man U. I don't know if it's just how he is utilized by his national team but he seems like a completely different player.
@@jonnyanderson3042 Again this is probably some bias showing but one of the first things I think of with Pogba is a match against Liverpool a couple of years ago. In the post match analysis they showed a replay of Pogba playing a 30-something yard pass with a vaguely acceptable degree of accuracy. They showed this replay several times with pundits gushing over how amazing it was with one saying "there's very few players in the world could have played that pass". Now I would say that playing a 30 yard pass when you're in plenty of space and under no pressure is a basic skill for a premier league player but what do I know
You should do a video on how the inability to change has plagued different English clubs such as stoke, Burnley, crystal palace (until now) and many others
Has there been any change in the Champion League knockout stages since the away rule has been scrapped? Appears as chaotic as always but great to see the data.
Everyone talks about Klopp but not many people talk about Michael Edwards, let's not forget that Michael Edwards helped Klopp to implement his ideas easier by getting the players who would fit into his system.
I think clubs need to start emulating Liverpool because they’re being run superbly. How they are able to compete with that City team every year I’ll never know. Best run club in the premier league at the moment. (Brighton also gets an honourable mention)
Question: Does De gea need to bear responsibility for the leaky defense of Manchester United? Will Dean Henderson actually help alleviate the defense problem?
Thought I’d answer this for you since it’s my sort of niche of knowledge. De Gea is massively responsible for a lot of United’s defensive issues right now but he isn’t the only problem. De Gea’s main issue is anything outside of shot stopping. He notoriously will drop back on his goal line and trust his admittedly world class reactions to stop a chance, instead of being proactive and coming out of his six yard box. This means for through balls, crosses and sweeping he never helps his defenders out, which means defenders have to drop further back to compensate. This means the midfield has a bigger space to cover since the defence will sit so deep to help de Gea, which is why United have such massive issues with midfield presence and ball progression. De Gea is also very poor with his feet, meaning it’s almost entirely up to defenders and midfielders to build out from the back in a much bigger area than usual because De Gea sits so deep. De Gea’s long balls also never find anyone so United lose possession a LOT. Henderson is better at sweeping and claiming crosses but he’s hardly world class, so United defo still need to invest in a new goalkeeper. Mike Maignan would be a lovely fit, or personally I’d say kasper Schmeichel. Bringing a new keeper in would have the same effect as Liverpool saw when they replaced Karius with Alisson, it’s going to sure up the defence immensely
Question (of a sort): Can we have a section just dedicated to how good James Milner has been over his 20 year career? The man is an absolute machine and he deserves to be deified in a Tifo Football Show Tribute in some form.
In recent times we have seen players move to clubs (often for good transfer fees) which don't inherently suit their playing styles. Moves like these ruin their reputations to some extent. With the increase of analysis and data available, is it a good idea for players to have their own analysers to help them to make the next move?
It's crazy to say we were a mid-table team. We dropped pace from the top 4 race in the 2009-2016 period but we never finished in the bottom half - our lowest finish was 8th (11/12, 15/16). I do see mid-table as not challenging for Europe or battling relegation, so 8th is a mid-table finish but to only be there twice in one of the worst spells in my lifetime, which also had a second place finish and a League Cup win. To me that makes us a top 4/6 team who finished mid-table and not a mid-table team. I guess it goes to show how big a club we are that even at the time 20 years on from our last title, missing Europe on a few occasions is seen as a huge failure.
Question: Does the fact that linesmen are always on the right hand touchline of the attacking team affect the game? Are right and left wingers ruled offside more often than the other and if this is the case how much can be gained from adapting a side to benefit from it?
Could you explain the transition brought in by klopp/Pep, the death of the traditional striker with the reliance on a false 9 in order to break down a low block whilst having the majority of possession
Could you clarify when the goalkeeper is allowed to hold the ball bcz sometimes I see teammates passing back and then the goalkeeper holds it even when not under attack
Man utd are paying ajax a reported 2.5 million in compensation for ten hag's services. I think that the record fee for a manger was nagelsmann to bayern for about 15 million. Given the importance of a a manager to a clubs philosophy and structure why do they cost such small compensation fees relative to player transfers?
QUESTION: After Mark Noble's retirement (Mr West Ham himself) and in today's modern game, are we likely to ever get a one club player like him in the EPL again?
I also think it's important to note the roles of Henderson and Milner when it comes to Liverpool. They are obviously not Mo Salah or Virgil Van Dijk, but I genuinely don't believe we would have won anywhere near as much without their influence on and off the pitch.
Question for Maram: What one number metrics are useful for player evaluations? What is the problem with using such metrics? Why isn't such metrics popular is football where as being quite interesting to look at for other sports?(Ex. PER stat in basketball)
Recruitment is important for Liverpool but I think you really can't understate the way they've developed not just academy players and homegrown players but even top talent they've brought in. Everyone seems to get better at Liverpool.
DCL at Everton has had a rough season. Can you look into what type of goals he scores? I feel he's great at heading and score scrappy goals. Not sure how many he's hit outside the box.
