For someone who doesn't know their history, you have almost everything figured out. I believe that "the fear of the dark" is above all the fear of anonymity, the fear of being nobody. This song is part of their second album, so Damiano wrote the lyrics between the ages of 19 and 20. And the album is called, rightly so, "Teatro d'ira" (theater of wrath) and, at the time, they were famous only in Italy. Most of the text can be referred to generic haters. In the English translation the matter is lost, but when Damiano sings "you stayed alone on the boat" he uses the feminine, second person singular of the verb. The first thing they did after winning Eurovision, causing scandal and indignation, was fire their manager, a woman who is still powerful and appreciated in the music scene. She didn't want them to make rock songs, because she believed that only incompetent fools could think of being successful making rock. 😁

Rush is a bit of a mix between Theatro dira and Il Ballo della vita, now I wonder if you've listened to In Nome del Padre yet. As for La Paura del Buio, it's probably my fave song by them. In this case they've said the dark essentially means the unknown.

I think you got the meaning quite well I also believe time frame is essential to understand this song: it's been written before 2021 they were quite established in Italy but still extremely young and to most still considered an XFactor product there weren't many haters around but not so much credibility as a musical entity either they were really hearing a thousand voices telling them what to do and how to do it and I imagine the pressure was huge and it should have been hard to keep focus on what they really wanted.when it's already hard to know what you want at 19/20yo... Kudos to these bright amazing guys while they know to have been lucky ie being at the right place at the right time they're also able to make the right decisions they really are 4 minds in 1 and I believe that's their strength...

I really love your reactions to Måneskin! And I always love your thoughts to lyrics that aren't immediately clear and obvious! With all artists actually! You have a great way of interpreting them and thinking about them! If you like their rock songs (as do I) I highly recommend Lividi Sui Gomiti and In Nome Del Padre from their second album Teatro d'Ira. Two of my favourite songs of theirs. They become much more rock when they are live as well. I got to see them at the O2 arena in London. Thomas Raggi got a number of extra solos on the last tour as well, and now Victoria and Ethan do a phantastic drum and bass intro to Mammamia or Master and Slave during the concert. There is a decent recording of La Parole Lontane from a concert in the Roman Circus Maximo by Stefano something. Half of it is Thomas just having fun on the guitar (amazing), and the other half is a song about creative block, when the muse is absent, the distant voice/speech. Stunning. Stefano also has a clip from the beginning of the Rush tour. Whether you want to do it as a reaction or just enjoy it for yourself, it really shows how you open a show.
This was the first Måneskin song that got me to really want to learn their lyrics. Will always be one of my favorites and I love this performance of it. Unfortunately it will probably not get more live performances.
My interpretation of the song is pretty much the same as yours, for me it's a song about haters. You should do In Nomme del Padre next, another rocker one ❤

Nice reaction - you should check their Eurovision 2021 Final performance of "Zitti e Buoni", the performance that launched them to international fame. This is blocked in the US so you will need some way to get around the geo-block. Also please make sure you look at the Final performance rather than the winners performance as the Final one is better.
Wonderful review. You nailed it with the lyrics and yes they were under fire immediately on the same night in Eurovision. Videos emerged where there were claims that Damiano was snorting coke on the table but he actually looked down after a glass of wine fell and spill. However i am so happy for them, they are living their best life and their career is booming. I feel like a proud parent :) Songs i recommend are definitely their winning performance with Zitti e Buoni and all their older songs
I would love you to react to this live of I wanna be your slave, is a really good live to get in the crazy silly version of Måneskin. I think one of the best things about them is their eclecticticy, their ability to be poetical and serious but also silly and random and ironic, and still being credible cause that's how they are, deep crazy smart kids.
