For anyone saying this is "in character for Niv," or that "it makes sense he would focus on bigger problems," let me say this: he is the living Guildpact, a physical representation of the magical contract that binds all of Ravnica. He represents all of the guilds, and was chosen for this position during the War of the Spark. If he wants to experiment with the omenpaths, that's fine, but he should have been transparent about it, as it affected all of the guilds. Furthermore, Ravnica has proven repeatedly that it can survive anything when the guilds are UNITED. Allowing them to fall into hostilities with each other (like Aurelia declaring war on the Cult of Rakdos) would have posed a bigger danger to the plane than anything that could have come through the omenpaths. In short, while Niv as a "regular dragon" and parun of "just" the Izzet League might be allowed to focus his efforts on the omenpaths, as the Guildpact he is duty-bound to act with transparency and to give consideration to how his actions affect the parties he was chosen to represent and lead. His behavior was selfish and reckless and makes no sense given his supposed intelligence, and the (assumed) function of the Guildpact's magic. We are often told about how complex and thorough the legal code is for Ravnica. Are we to believe there is nothing in that massive pile of laws that governs how the actual Guildpact must act?

Ravnica has faced two devastating interplanar invasions in the last 3 years. Let the neutral RAMI take care of the inter-guild squabbles while he tries to make sure Ravnica isn’t caught off-guard by the next plane-hopping big shot who wants to blow up the city. Also, “duty-bound to act with transparency?” The living guildpact presumably interacts with the Dimir. How could they stay secret if the highest figure in the plane was legally obligated to keep ratting them out?

I feel like he was already playing 4D Chess and knew full well that the Proft was going to intervene and solve the case anyway. The way the story seems framed makes it seem like he already knew how all the events were going to play out before even Proft did. The "Yeah, I knew the murders happened, I knew you were there, and I knew you were going to solve it and that you were going to eventually end up in front of me" So he just took the, 'I will get involved when it becomes necessary,' approach.

@@yellowpie The Dimir haven't been a "secret" for a long time now, not since the conclusion of the original Ravnica storyline. They had a publicly visible maze runner, and Lazav become a celebrated hero after defeating Dovin during the War of the Spark. The Guildpact doesn't have to pretend they don't exist, and the Murders story even starts by Proft pointing out how odd it is there isn't anyone from Dimir at the party before he reveals Etrata IS there, which causes alarm, because she's a known Dimir assassin. And frankly, everything Niv has known about and tried to be ready for he has failed at. He picked Melek to run the Implicit Maze, which didn't work out. He hid super weapons across the plane to prepare for a battle against a threat like Nicol Bolas, and those weapons barely scratched the Elder Dragon. And who even knows where he was during the Phyrexian Invasion. At this point, Niv should realize the best protective measure for the plane is the strength of the guilds themselves, and he should be doing everything in his power to help them cooperate and flourish, not ignore them and risk a cross-guild war that will only reduce their capacity to stand up to whatever comes through the omenpaths next. For having a superior intellect, he seems to miss how important cooperation is between the guilds, especially given it was their cooperation that brought him back to life in the first place.

Oh god it all makes sense now. Niv-Mizzet wasn’t really present during the events of the story because he was trying to figure out how to bring other IP’s to Magic as opposed to caring for the established world. Knowing Niv, after the last chat he had with Jace it makes sense to me that he is obsesed with control over planar trable. And, as a dragon, we must remember he thinks a bit diferently to us. Do I think it could have been better written, yes. But is not destroying Ravnica in my opinion.

for me, it's coherent. We as players "know" there is no inminent super threat in the other side of an omenpath. But for a megalomaniac with godlike powers dragon, that envy the properties of the planeswalkers, studying the literal paths to imitate those beyond his possibilities is more important than solving murders that do not tear apart the plane itself.

It seems pretty in character to me for Niv-Mizzet to do that honestly. He's a multi-millenia-old dragon, and he didn't exactly feel threatened by a talking plant killing a few people here and there. On the other hand, the multiverse brings an infinite amount of possibilities, and Niv especially can't afford to let this opportunity go, he's finally become the head of the plane, it's understandable that he'd want to secure a position of power, in the shift that's bound to happen. All in all, there's a lot of parallels between him and Urza here, and it seems to fit as they already have quite similar personalities to start with.

Bold to assume Ravinica hasn’t already been serving as the central hub of the multiverse. Tezzert’s Consorduim of planeswalkers was based here The gatewatch took on commissions from other worlds from ravnica A good portion of the cannon cast was already familiar with the plane, and that was even before the war of the spark called about 65-75% of all planeswalkers

I am in the minority here, but I am happy knowing a bit more about the Guildless or the burned out from the Guilds. Yes, the Guilds are the more important factions of Ravnika, but allways there were more people alongside them, so I think that the Post-Invasion Ravnika can have a change of Status Quo, specially when many Guilds have important losses, both in lives, in prestige and in resources. And like sombedy said before, Niv is a long-lived dragon. He is not an evil monster, but still a monster in a way.
@reginaldvonbartlesbee

Honestly I think it's a great place to build the concept of a top down set for two four color combo factions as a war with four guilds (two on each side) breaks out and Niv-Mizzet is just there trying to keep the other guilds from joining, and the other guilds get a few cards reflecting their support or disdain for the war. I don't know how hard that would be to design game-wise, but I know it would be more interesting, more fun, more creative, and a better story than the last four Ravnica sets combined (which all were about either building towards a different set, or exist just to talk about villians that ultimately have no relationship with the plane itself -Bolas and Phyrexians respectively-). WE COULD EVEN HAVE TEAMUP CARDS FOR THE FOUR GUILD LEADERS! What do I know tho.

This is TOTALLY in-character for Niv-Mizzet: 1. He gets bored with basic things such as solving murders, keeping the peace ecc. Others should take care of these things. 2. He was never intended to be a good incarnation of the guildpact: he behaves like a super-intelligent, fire-breathing spoiled child. He has always been a chaotic character dancing on the line between good and evil. 3. His massive ego demands that he puts himself at the same level of planeswalkers, if not above them. The goal of controlling the omenpaths makes complete sense. 4. Turning Ravnica into the economic center of the multiverse while keeping a closer eye on the paths is a logic purpose. After a catastrophic war you want the economy to rebuild itself. Personally, I think this is the closest-to-the-first-Ravnica-books Niv-Mizzet we got in a long time, and in general the story has many references to the OG Ravnica.

Interesting take. I think Niv’s actions are very in line with his character. Besides, if I was arbiter of a plane that was recently connected to a wider multiverse, my number one concern would be understanding and controlling those portals to protect (and potentially benefit) my world. A string of murders doesn’t seem nearly as important.

I’ll be the 1st to say it not only was this set made for new Capenna, but the fact that this happened on Ravnica with the new block system is hurting it more than ever. I would like to hypothesise that this set especially could work incredibly well on Ravnica, assuming we have three sets to fully flesh everything out. Can totally imagine an incredible side set. Perhaps the sandwich set where Nivis and a bunch of other esteemed members of the Ravnica allegiance, focusing on a tourism problem at the same time, trying to micromanage, or maybe downplay the murders happening. Forcing deep and complex stories into blips on the Magic calendar, hurts the actual investment that players and collectors will have in the game, let alone the longtime story. I do worry that perhaps will never experience quite the Hyzy that we have seen in narrative storytelling in Magic for at least 4 to 5 years. Simply so many of the big bad and I’ve gone so where’s the next buildup it’s going to take awhile.

Read in the original Ravnica books that Niv Mizzet was about stop on of the Nephilim from making it into a dense part of the city- but didn't. He attacked, then relented because he didn't feel like helping. I think it's implied he knew others would stop it but still. It kinda checks out so far. honestly I liked the chapter. I don't think not careing about individual deaths is too much out of character for Niv. Guildmasters seemed to not care about them until a guildmaster died. I just see Niv's uninterest as a result of his ego and him seeling himself as higher being.

I mean lets be real... Niv Mizzet ignoring the murders to investigate something like the Omenpaths for his own benifits (and to thumb his draconic nose at a certain Planeslwaker who told him that for all the power he could ever gather on Ravnica, he was still practically no-one on the level of the Multiverse because he wasn't able to leave Ravnica) is *COMPLETELY* in character for Niv Mizzet.

Honestly I figured Niv Mizzet was up to something when we got a card for him but he didn't impact the stories. Seeing him focus on the omenpaths does kind of make me see him as a disconnected researcher again rather then an arbiter between the guilds. It does also make sense with the only vehicle in the set, if there's another please correct me I didn't see one on a cursory glance, being Kylox's Voltstrider. We know one of the upcoming sets being described as a death race through the omenpaths on multiple planes, so I'm wondering if this is to tie in to that in the end. As for the set as a whole, I don't mind a Ravinican set that doesn't focus on the guilds and I love the murder mystery of this set, but I feel it doesn't quite land. I feel maybe they both didn't mix well to me.

People die and are murdered and are assassinated in Ravnica every day. The guild leaders with increasing frequency with every magic set, and are always replaced. It's not Niv's job to protect people, it's his job to protect Ravnica and the balance of the guilds. If Auralia would've declared war, then he might have actually got involved cause that's not person to person conflict, especially when she puts her blade to an unconscious slumbering demon. That's guild to guild conflict, and THEN is when he'd start flexing his brain, magic, power, and influence. I think it's pretty obvious he was oblivious to Oban's maleficence (or scorn or treachery or whatever), since there's no evidence really understands much of anything about Tristani's (and specifically Oban's) mental state. I mean heck, the other sisters didn't even know. The pollen would be his biggest concern, but you have to remember only a handful of people know about it and for SOME REASON didn't bring it explicitly to him. He doesn't have reliable recon of the entire plane at all times which is easy for us to forget cause of the age we're in with tech, and any attempt to instate that system would be rejected by probably EVERY GUIILD except Azorius and Boros. Given, the Dimir know about it, but they aren't incredibly loyal to their original purpose within the guild pact (to use their information gathering skills for the betterment of the plane's politics and balance). They would probably be still getting a good read of Niv's ability to serve as guild pact and his focus on extraplanar matters even more so convinced them to just look to others for assistance. Honestly, the most out of character interaction is the idea that Niv would even allow Proft to think for a second that he needs his help or would pay him for doing so. Sorry for the novel. I understand the perspective you're coming from, but I think there are other factors that lead to the story going how it does. I mean, the card himself and the crappy interaction with the other cards in the set reflects him narratively at the moment, he doesn't care about single colored or colorless detectives solving small mysteries or murders.

I don't think this story really offends me too badly. Niv-Mizzet and Proft are both sort of sociopathic, Aspergers syndrome, ivory tower kind of characters with motives unknown and unknowable to the rest of us. They are perhaps more interested in knowledge and puzzles than justice. Like during the War of the Spark, Niv-Mizzet wanted Ravnica to win, but did not really care about collateral damage. If a bunch of little people died, oh well. There would still be enough survivors afterward. Proft is inspired by Sherlock Holmes who would get very depressed and almost suicidal if the newspapers were boring, there was nothing to stimulate his intellect, and he had no tricky mystery to solve. Holmes easily could have gone the other way and ended up as a master criminal like Moriarty rather than a master detective. He was more interested in the game than bringing justice to wrongdoers. It also seems like Niv-Mizzet might be very concerned about defending his plane. Ravnica has recently been invaded twice in a row by Bolas and his eternals, and then by Phyrexia. So he could argue that external invasions were a much greater threat than a crime wave of murders.

I recall MaRo (or possibly some other WotC rep) talking about them making a new unique detective world for this story but then they dropped it halfway, scooped it all up and just moved the murder mystery to Ravnica instead "because this way the stakes are higher". I hate it, I honestly hate it from the bottom of my heart. WotC: Look we made a new special government unit to take care of solving crimes! Nobody ever solved crimes on Ravnica before! Azorius: Am I a joke to you? The only cool part about this set is that the story was made available as an audio book on youtube in 10 30-minutes parts. I enjoyed this format a lot. I guess it would be kind of thematic if the idea of a "Living Guildpact" just isn't going to work out. Jace had a terrible run at it, and Niv-Mizzet had plenty of doubters (who now seem rather justified). He landed himself the position in the middle of some desperation hail marys during WAR; several guild reps there were not thrilled with the idea of handing him the reins. On the other hand, I already thought that Ravnica becoming the "central hub" of the multiverse seemed like the natural and intended progression for the macro-level story. I wouldn't have minded a smoother transition after MOM though.

This chapter would make more sense in my mind if, in order to make Niv-Mizzet care about the string of murders, Oba had been targeting those involved in his pet project. I know Kylox is one, but far as I'm aware no one else who was killed was involved. And it would also validate Oba's viewpoint and her reasons for killing off anyone who would further taint the sanctity of Ravnica after two invasions. That being said, if Niv-Mizzet is supposed to be a super genius, it probably would not take long for him to figure out the "who done it?", thus making Proft a pointless addition to the world-building.

I wonder if this is one of those things where it turns out the centuries (longer?) old dragon has to learn what it means to be the Guildpact, and we learn that he has a learning curve to this whole "act in the interest of ALL of the guilds" thing. Also, wasn't Jace mostly AWOL while he was the Guildpact?
@MagicArcanum
@MagicArcanum 2 месяца назад
Yes, Jace was often missing, and Lavinia constantly scolded him and threatened what would happen to the plane if he didn't carry out his duties. Niv Mizzet also claimed he could "do better," and now that he's given the chance, he seems to be doing worse.

Honestly, Niv Mizzet ignoring a string of murders to study a new found phenomena occurring on his plane sounds like something the previous leader of the Izzet guild would do so I think this is fine. I got into the magic story around war of the spark so I don’t know if Niv is a more caring character than this but I think it fits someone from Izzet very well.

I think a big part of why they made him the new guildpact was so that he could put his big brain to work on the big picture for the benefit of ALL the guilds, not just his own interests. It's fine if he doesn't want to personally handle the murders, but he should at least acknowledge them, and explain to the guild leaders why his focus is on something else. He really shouldn't be having personal projects in his current position; everything he does should be for the benefit of the plane, and be transparent to the people he represents.

Im wondering how this would affect Ravnica- the guildpact was created to make sure the ten guilds don't go at war with each other, and its still recovering after two wars. The guildless are growing in number and growing restless to the lack of care to their needs. Another guild (Selesnya) has been thrown to the pit because of what Trostani did (besides Golgari, and a bit of Simic and Izzet) and will be now under radar for everyone else. I wish we could see how are the civilians of the guilds doing, because we got a but of an explanation in Planeswalker's Guide to Murder at Karlov Manor, but only by the surface Also, will there be more episodes? Its called Episode 11 when other epilogues didn't have "Episode" in their titles

Lot of people commenting that it's very in-character for Niv-Mizzet to pursue research of Universes Beyond and ignore the petty interactions of the lesser beings beneath him. I do agree with that. He's... got a... bit of an ego problem and gets a little obsessive about his research. All part of his charming Red-Blue personality. The problem here is... that is no longer his JOB anymore. As the Living Guildpact, especially one who so openly criticized the *previous* Guildpact for being absent, it is his sworn(presumably) duty to deal with the going-ons between the Guilds. He is no longer the Izzet Guildmaster, another reason why his card from Aftermath, Niv-Mizzet, Supreme, was such a flavor fail in my eyes. That card was a Five-Color Izzet Spell-slinger Commander. His newest card here, Guildpact, was BEAUTIFUL. No room for flavor text there, but a perfect line would say something about, *"The Guilds, united as one, can defeat all obstacles."* The more Guilds you have working together under him, the more profit you get. Defeat your enemies with more damage, rebuild the city with more life-gain, and expand your knowledge with more card draw. It was a perfect blend of flavor and mechanical winningness! Then I hear here that the Guildpact cares nothing for the individual people leading the Guilds. It makes me sick. The greatest part about stories set on Ravnica are the Guilds. Cycles of Guild leaders, a Signet of each color pair, Charms! This set completely ignores the best part about Ravnica and writes that the "Master" of the Guildmasters ignores the best part as well. Bad taste in my mouth from this one, also, the confusion over Karlov/Markov Manor should have been avoided by naming this set something else. ANYTHING ELSE. Please? Also also, better to set it in Capenna. Pretty much, everything Ryan said, I agree with.

Niv prioritizing the Omen Paths is justifiable. Ravnica is a hot spot for interplanar trouble. It would make sense for the curious founder of the Izzet League to want to uncover this mystery & prevent and future threat it may pose. BUT a "I didn't care." instead of, "There was a more important issue." feels so off.

To me, it was a NC set, they change it at last time, because of the new standard rotation thing, or we ended up having 2 sets of NC at the same time in standard, which would be strange considering that NC was not a set that was completely well received by the fans despite being great and very beautiful, you can easily change the orzov to osbcura, azorius and the detectives to the brokers, and the dimir assassins, you would change to the maestros who now have no leader and everything would fit perfectly into the story

So here is my take. I am SUPER excited for the concept of the "Globalization" arc of MTG being delivered upon. I am not completely surprised by Niv being an asshole. He was always an incredibly selfish and detached dragon. And from a purely, ethical-less vision, the murders may even have been benefitial to him in some way. The old guard and the "traitors" of Ravnica falling means he has less pushback on building Magic's Panama City and less chance of corrupting forces within his own plane working behind his back. Proft, though, 100% felt like a New Capenna character here. But, all the negatives aside. Etrata being frustrated at Proft's need to flex in front of THE FIREMIND was hilarious

This story couldn't have worked on Capenna, because Capenna doesn't have any form of law enforcement, or laws for that matter loll. You can't have big conspiracy without cops and feds loll. But seriously the creators talked about it and at first wanted a new plane, but after a while they just realized their story looked more and more like Ravnica, so why not use it. The original Ravnica novel was, afterall, a classic noir detective story solving murders in the city and uncovering a conspiracy. Ravnica has always been a murder-mystery, since its begining.

And here I was hoping Niv-Mizzet would dismantle the agency for interfering with his job. Honestly, it does fit Niv-Mizzet's profile, but it seems more like the usual rushed excuse Wizards makes up. "Petty" murders were one thing, but the imminent war...I doubt he'd ignore that. I don't think this hit as a viable plot they thought it would Studying the omenpaths works for Niv-Mizzet's character but like I've said before it's the "murder mystery" plot that doesn't work. It was a mess trying to remove guild focus especially while using the guilds

I understand your point however Ravnica had become, already, the unofficial hub of the multiverse. I think that from Niv-Mizzet's point of view the omenpaths have democratized planeswalking to an extent. So thinking of the future of the plane it owuld better to act become the offcial hub of the multiverse because it would develop Ravnican society to a point that coulnt have achive it before. Imagine what Izzet ravnicans could make with Kaladeshian or Kamigawan tech, or the golgari with stitching tech from Innistrad, Imagine how the Orzhov could profit from trading acros the multiverse, or the Dimir gathering information, or the Gruul bringing Dinos from Ixalan to rampage harder. I think that Niv Mizzet using his intelligence, power, and resource for all of this will bring a new dawn to Ravnica.

The main reason Niv took the Guidpact from Jace was because he was "Shirking his Duties to the Peace of the Plane", so why in The Wide-Wide World Of Sports would he LET all those murders happen?! Just to remind us that all in all, these murders are only what they are: bits of news designed to fill up the columns of the local newspaper. Nothing world-shaking: it made a little excitement in the celebrity community, a bit of scandal and so it will wash away with the next gruesome murder. Entertaining, but no lasting effect on Ravnica. Agreed 100%: it would have been better featured on New Capenna. 😉
