I have a Veloster R-Spec with a little 1.6 Turbo (Tuned to 250 Whp) Smartest thing I ever did was to put a dual catch can system in place to minimize blow-by. I have caught A LOT of contaminants before they made it back into the engine. Also, with these little GDI turbo motors, you're getting a lot of LSPI issues. People crusing at 45-50 MPH floor it and the load on these tiny engines is IMMENSE. Cracked rods, pistons and windows in the block. Thankfully with a manual, I make sure to always down shift to get the RPMs up and I'm good to go. Manufacturers have done a poor job educating people how these new more efficient engines work. They aren't like the V6 motors back in the day.

All of the people hating on GM have a valid point, but I've had a Mopar warp a head in 30K miles and two Fords shatter pistons. All were driven lightly and had regular maintenance performed at factory intervals. That's what finally drove me and my family to Japanese cars.
@TheSqeeek

I've also seen Mazda and Mitsubishi motors blow rods out the block, and I have a GM with 300k miles on it. I think shit just happens sometimes, not every part comes out correctly.

@TheSqeeek

Koshunae yeah but every manufacturer has had design problems. My point was more that anecdotal early failures are not reason to condemn an entire manufacturer. Especially since Chevys are more often manufactured outside of the US and most US Toyotas are made in the US now, saying 'American cars are the problem' doesn't make any sense. Have to judge each specific model by itself, everything changes every year when it comes to which car from which manufacturer is most reliable - and then you have to consider maintenance.

It's the same thing as saying Natty Light is better than Milwaukee's Best Light---it's the same low quality shit, engineered to the same low standards. No doubt someone will write in about how their full size American truck has a gazillion miles on it---that's because the quality of American trucks has always been far better than their cars.

@Sheehy223
@Sheehy223 7 лет назад
TheLuckyDawg24 It has nothing to do with that, GM is the only brand completely incompetent at making a half decent 4 cylinders. The Ford 2.0 EcoBoost is just as reliable as any other properly built 4 Cylinder, and that's because Ford actually spent the time necessary to engineer and build them properly. Factory Turbocharged Engines need to be overbuilt, as in be prepared to make much more power than they actually do in order to remain reliable for it's entire lifespan. All this engine is is a Turbo thrown onto a tiny little sewing machine that clearly wasn't made to handle Boost.
@novaman3509
@novaman3509 7 лет назад
MaxTheKanuck Ford Ecoboost, reliable? Yeah, the EcoBoost is very reliable, if you look passed the severe carbon build up on the backside of the valves that causes premature valve and valve seat destruction, or the injectors taking a shit under 20,000 miles, or the turbos exploding under 40,000 miles. Look past all that, and yeah. The EcoBoost is extremely reliable!
@Sheehy223
@Sheehy223 7 лет назад
NovaMan 350 So explain to me which features in Ford EcoBoost Engines inherently cause problems such as these. Specifically.
@koljag5
@koljag5 7 лет назад
MaxTheKanuck I know you weren't asking me, but the valve issues are cause by it being direct injected. There isn't fuel being sprayed on the back side of the valves and that causes them to build up carbon. If bits of carbon break off and make it down stream it can screw up the turbo. The newest truck ecoboost engines have 2 injectors per cylinder, one is direct and the other is port. That's what toyota does and it's supposed to fix it. At least that's my understanding.
@killman1971
@killman1971 7 лет назад
First off ecoboost engines are turbo gas direct injection engines like a diesel engine but running on gas. Instead of spraying fuel before the valves it is injected directly into the cylinder during compression stroke. So the gas does not clean the valve stem or seat at all. Gases, oil and carbon from the positive crankcase ventilation system will tend to coat the inner runner, valve stem, and valve seat. Oil from a diesel will actually clean the above areas. So a much better PCV system with a catch can is needed or an all aluminum intake with an extra injector. Second many vehicles seem to not have fuel filters anymore but diesel style injectors need very clean fuel so a sub micronic fuel filter is needed. Also not a bad idea for a sub micronic bypass oil filter as well. Third turbo are a high precision device that need to be very well designed, have proper QA/QC and have to treated properly. No running an engine stop (which stops the lubrication and cooling of a 20000 rpm turbo) 10 times a mile in bumper to bumper traffic only to crank boost up to 20 psi.

The biggest problems were the earlier Kia's. Their name was literally their biggest joke for the longest time (Killed In Action) and it left a sour taste in most Kia owner's mouths. They were extremely un-safe and suffered from tons of mechanical problems. These days they're MUCH better as they're not specifically designed by Kia anymore. Hyundai is in the same boat, they've been getting better but are still not on par with Kia. GM on the other hand is absolutely horrible, GM's were 80% of the vehicles my dad saw in his shop and he specializes in German and Japanese but knows every car like the back of his hand, GM's are hard to work on, always fail and their parts are always extremely expensive. He hates having to ever touch a GM because of how stupid their designs are and how difficult they make everything to replace, they also lose fuel pumps like crazy, no matter the car. The plastic they use in the fuel pumps gets eaten away by the fuel. How Chevy gets away with their commercials saying they've won awards as most reliable car and bashing on other manufaturers is beyond me. Edit: It also doesn't help that most of their technology is stolen and badly ripped off at that. Their original Eco motors were of SAAB and Opel design, the block was all SAAB, extremely solid and well built and then they took the fuel system and electrical designs from Opel. After they co-owned SAAB, they were forcing their shit onto SAAB and taking SAAB's designs, they wanted their cars to be equal and because of this most new SAAB's are terrible for only two reasons, transmission issues and turbo issues especially. After they had what they wanted they forced SAAB into bankruptcy and they were purchased by a Chinese company. The only good thing that came out of the entire ordeal was the Saabaru, a 50/50 mix of SAAB and Subaru engineering that wasn't soiled by GM. So yeah, fuck GM.

What's the point of moving to smaller, high tech engines if they are prone to catastrophic failures like this? Not only is this a blow to the consumer, it is a huge black mark on the brand, and erodes confidence in the technology.
@cpufreak101
@cpufreak101 7 лет назад
simply because they have no choice. the EPA is making stricter and stricter requirements for fuel efficiency and emissions, and it hit a point of where it's increasing so fast that companies have to half-ass the engineering to get it out on time to try to meet the updated standards. i think it's sitting at 30 MPG combined right about now for minimum (trucks/SUV's get weighted differently, i don't quite understand exactly how though, all i know is they don't really count as much) and in 2025, it has to be 54.5 MPG. i can only imagine the trash that those engines will be :/ we have a 2006 trailblazer going on 200K, still going very strong, we're going to hopefully run it until the wheels come off, as now even 2006 levels of older is becoming better than the modern stuff
@panther201787
@panther201787 7 лет назад
Justin Noker Are you seriously blaming the EPA and not the company for using substandard parts and materials? All the other auto companies aren't having these kinds of problems. American cars are terrible because American companies put profit before quality. Next time you go to the gas station look around and see how many American cars vs for foreign car getting gas.
@cpufreak101
@cpufreak101 7 лет назад
Austin French it was mainly an educated guess as it's the primary reason they're selling the smaller turbo engines here. Other companies (ill use a European one like VW for example) over in Europe, they had strict legislation for a looooong time, some places before the invention of the turbo. As a result, there was no rapidly changing efficiency and emissions requirements we're seeing now in the US under various CAFE and CARB legislation. So for European manufacturers, they have engines that already conform to new standards, so all they have to do is shop them over (main reason a lot of new Chrysler cars are using Fiat engines) while American companies, like Chevy for example, are well known for N/A large displacement motors, like not even any of their I4's were really under 2.0L until CAFE and CARB legislation changed, and as a result they're trying to have the guys used to designing N/A V8's trying to instead design a 1.5L economy turbo motor (which might explain the dumb choice of cast pistons) However, I do get your point, if I were an engineer, even I know the second I hear "turbo" I have to think "Forged" though only the higher ups would allow that decision, as another plausible argument I see towards them using cast is they just have to adapt old equipment meant for casting the pistons, instead of having to completely retool a production line to make the Forged Pistons, which are a slight bit pricier and harder to produce, though we now see how terrible a choice the cast was, so in my mind at least, the retooling would have been worth it.
@panther201787
@panther201787 7 лет назад
Well put, sir. That's one of the great things about foreign cars, they all have forged internals even if they are naturally aspirated. They learned that lesson a long time ago. And what sucks regarding American cars is that it's not just because of the turbos, their quality sucks across-the-board. They use so much plastic these days it's ridiculous.

Well my Toyota Camry has a bulletproof naturally aspirated 2.5 liter 4 cylinder. It averages 38 on the highway and 28 in the city. The law of deminishing returns for the gasoline engine holds really true. A turbocharged and downsized engine looks good on paper but in reality it an epic fail. What we should’ve done instead of forcing automakers into making needlessly complex internal combustion engines is to have a mandatory road map to phase out brand new cars that run in fossil fuels. Starting with high end and midrange luxury vehicles and trickling as battery technology improves.

More of today's modern "Walmart" grade disposable crap. Sad for Chevy to ruin their reputation putting out absolute junk like this. In the 1970s, the Malibu gained the reputation of being a reliable, bulletproof car. Even the downsized late 70s / early 80s RWD Malibus were reliable little cars, with exception of two years '79 and '80 with some 305 V8s which had poor camshaft metallurgy, but this was still a minor problem compared with this, and didn't show up until much later than 100,000 miles. But get an "Iraqi Taxi" with the 231 V6 and drive it forever, and spend next to nothing on maintenance!

yeah, i was actually looking into GM a bit, and it turns out that there are now quite a few things that weren't GM. back around 2006-2008, they were in a partnership with Fiat, and some signs of this are left (the duramax 2.4L in some cars is actually a fiat design they still hold the rights to) and even the Pontiac Vibe, that was just a redesigned Toyota from when they were in a partnership. then when 2009 happened, all of GM went out of business. what seems to be unknown, is that there are two different GM's. the "old" GM and the "new" GM. the old GM is the GM that was making cars from the company's founding until the crisis of 2009. after 2009, the US government actually gained control of all assets and formed the "new" GM, and the US government owns 60% of the company, Canadian government 20%, and the remaining 20% is divided among shareholders. so basically, the GM that made those great cars and engines, it now ceases to exist.

My 2015 Ford Focus has oil coming out of the oil fill cap like this Chevy, no lights and it isn't misfiring; and no the cap isn't loose. Idk if it's normal but my old mustang that had 92k miles didn't do it or my new 2016 Fiesta. All of my families Fords have lasted a long time, our family Expedition has 100k with just fluids done and it runs excellent. My uncle has a 2000 Ford F.150 with over 600k miles, a few suspension and exhaust parts but the engine and transmission are original. The only other American vehicle we have owned was a 2012 Jeep Liberty Limited Jet, talk about a piece of crap; transmission was worn out at 40k, piston rings at 49k, and electrical issues at 49k. Being a lube tech at a chevy dealer place, seeing all the new and older chevys i have gotten to see first hand how difficult and cheaply made they are plus the rate at which they have problems from brand new to down the line later on problems. We have 5 or 7 new 2017 malibu cars mostly from rental cars of miss firing and idling rough not even past 10K miles on them. All the problems are the piston heads breaking apart. Not small chips of a good chunk of the edges broken off and slamming against the valves. Still waiting on back order for new engines and it's been 3 months of waiting and still no engines have been shipped to us. The answer GM gave the certifying instructors is that the customers are using cheap gases and it causes the pistons to break apart. But when we asked the master tech the real cause, it's just simply cheap material made to the engine builds. And everything on that shitty 1.5L motor is difficult to remove and install. the turbo itself had me helping a tech aligning it in place just to put 4 bolts on took 45mins because the visibility seeing the holes is 0. everything is cramped together and not much room to work with so everything takes longer to get done.

In this case, it's said to be a 'melted piston'. The piston crown got so hot it deformed and developed a crack/hole. Because it was driven hard and the engine internals weren't up to it, and/or the engine management system failed to adequately control the combustion conditions.

This isn't just a GM thing, it's the trend towards low displacement turbo engines across the board that is adding stress and complexity to the engines. That all has to do with CAFE standards for MPG, and it's costing consumers. Obvious thing, a lot of "expert" reviewers haven't called this out because they are beholden to the car companies (to get a car for review, they have to be in good with them). It's now becoming quite obvious, Honda recently went to turbos and has a lot of problems. FCA (Dodge/Chrysler) and Toyota have not embraced this trend and are now some of the most reliable cars on the road. Used car resale on turbos is taking a big hit. A V6 Ford Edge for example, has resale 2-3k higher than the turbo 4. As long as you have a warranty (new or certified) it's probably OK, but unless you have a lot of cash sitting around buying a used turbo out of warranty and/or with close to or over 100k miles is very risky IMO.
