A short guide on everything you need to know as a new game developer. From idea to picking an engine (unity, godot, unreal, GameMaker, RPG maker), staying motivated, and finding a publisher. Not focusing on individual things like programming, art, or animation, but a general overview of what you need to know as a beginner.

I love this video. Exactly what beginners need. Not all of those 30 minute "Which engine" type of videos. Great insight.

Plan ahead, and plan to fail. Invest a little bit, in a lot of different directions. Navigating the design space requires experience. Be okay with putting the hard work you did on prototyping in a box and the possibility of never looking at it again. The real product of the work is what you learn along the way. The number one mistake people make in software development is commitment to bad ideas.

Look into learning linear algebra, pointers, and operators. You don't have to learn full stack, but some tools are basically universal.

I love This. Just.... I'm scared about marketing a platformer. Any tips, my fellow internet stranger?

Yeah there are a lot of platformers, but you could market one well if you make your art really really stand out, and add some interesting game mechanics. Really lean into those mechanics. 1. Good art 2. Original mechanics With those 2 I'm sure you can market it to a big audience.

think platformers is one of the hardest genres there's a ton of games you're competing with and it kind of feels like everyone's first game is a platformer.... of course if you can make a "Ori and the blind forest" or something by all means do it but I think it's better to just stand out by coming up with a new game that doesn't exist yet. easier said than done obviously but I think it's easier to stand out with your core idea than it is to compete against every other platformer on art and gameplay. like if you look at indie hits there are some platformers but they all have to compete on quality. whereas if you make "totally accurate battle sim" or "goat simulator" or something, not a lot of goat simulators to compete with so it's no big deal if your graphics aren't the best or that your gameplay is a bit wonky this is of course only relevant when it comes to making money, which is always kind of weird. creatively you should just do what feels right I guess.
