Just like in my last video talking about defense and defensive options in fighting games, I wanted to talk about how "neutral" works in fighting games, and why it may not be what you think it is. I show you examples from Guity Gear Strive, Dragon Ball FighterZ, and Blazblue Central Fiction, but just know this can apply to every fighting game you play - from Smash Ultimate to Dragon Ball FighterZ!

Good video to help my friends understand fighting games more. Most people just assume it’s all about combos and dmg but the real meat and potatoes is the neutral game.

Neutral and the rules as well as the importance of blocking are typically what fighting games fail instill in players, yeah Once you get those down, everything else starts to click into place

Great vid, Kizzy. Definitely appreciate hearing a different model to explain neutral rather than the reactionary/preemptive/aggressor one that gets used so often. IDK if you're looking for high level topics to talk about, but I'd love to hear your approach to high level defense. Strive has taught me a lot about structuring my offense around my opponents habits/character, but I don't feel as confident with my guesses/options on defense.

@@Kizzie_Kay LFG KING I watch pros backdash stuff all the time and I feel like I never know when to incorporate that. Sometimes when I'm focusing on IB-ing, I just beat by something else. Post-safe jump situations on defense just feel awful lol. My defense is so guess based and I wish there was more structure to it 😅

Idk how exactly, but recontextualizing neutral as “zones” made something instantly click in my head, like it made it all suddenly make sense. Being able to organize things like that in my head made me realize “okay so maybe i need to stick to this set of options in zone one and be on the lookout for these options from x or y character in zone 2”. Youre a great teacher man, keep up the good work and i hope to see more videos like this in the future

Yes please! I'd absolutely love more content like this. This video is so helpful. I used to only think about space as having more or less of it. But thinking about things as 'zones' really helps me to break down the stages of interaction. One of my biggest problems is dealing with the mental stack, and I've learned that compartmentalizing things so i only focus on what happens in the situation i'm in at the moment has helped me the most to deal with it. I'm immediately sharing this video with all of my fighting game playing friends.
@zeywop

before this vid i always thought of zoning just as “distance”. like oh axl’s a zoner so he plays far away to keep you out of his space. seeing it broken down into like “there are four spaces on the screen” really helps to understand like, this is where X character wants to be and this is where Y character wants to be and WHY they want to be there

If you're a veteran fighting game player you're already lucky to have this in your subconscious and it's something you react to. People new to fighting games have to think about this first and visualize it before they can do it and that's a much longer road.

Love this video! Partner this with James chens concept from his first attack series about picking the right attack in a given situation is like picking the right utensil to eat food. Mash potatoes you can use a fork or a spoon but cereal you got to use a spoon. Keep up the good work! Much love! ❤️

Starting from fighterz definitely played a big part in my learning of the neutral game. You'd think not, because of how little you play neurral in that game, but honestly, having to deal with stuff at that speed turns you into a neutral god

I've mostly leveled up my blocking skill and patience from all these mix up lmao. Fighter Z and DnF duel are the games I've decided to go online and not care about the results as I've always felt anxious going against other players before. Now I'm squaring against Legends and Deities after getting into it arround Christmas. Vanguard Buffs were amazing.

Neutral is honestly the hardest part in FGs but also the most fun one imo it's here that you use your pokes to whiff punish or just use it and there's nothing more satisfying than a perfectly spaced button or a well timed whiff punish. Neutral is awesome 🙏 (ofc there's more to it than the 2 things i mentioned but y'all get the idea)
@Dunker401
@Dunker401 Год назад
Honestly what get me the most is not the neutral but the conversion ability because sure you can have proper spacing and playing in your space but when you do get that random hit do you have the reaction to properly convert? Can you deal with the opponent who are trying to do the same?

@@Dunker401 how I’m learning that atleast in strive is understanding if I hit you out of nowhere I’m not gonna do a max combo to start I’m gonna do a combo that sets up for pressure and allows me to gain momentum

Your bread-and-butter is your fastest standing attack. Rely on that and you will definitely increase your win percentage. Anyting slower and you're giving your opponent the advantage. For instance I main Baiken and her slash is her fastest standing normal. I use it as a poke and as a lead up to any combos. Her forward kick is a little slower but has more reach. The best thing you can do is go to Dustloop and look at your characters frame data (look for the attack(s) with the fastest start up and hopefully longest reach) for whatever games you like to play.

4:56 " I gotta say I miss this game" I still play it, but seeing the majority of the FGC ( primarily in the west) lack of interest in the title isn't that surprising to me, since despite many FGC content creators trying to define what objectively makes a good fighting game, the reality is that the answer to that question is going to change depending on WHO you ask, EVEN among pro players. For instance, they are are pro players that only like fighting games that are primarily footsie based, so games like Street Fighter and KOF are games that they are most likely going to love and hate airdashers like BBCF, GGXRD, and MBTL. Personally, I prefer airdashers over purely footsie based ones, since the extra movement gives you more ways to approach the opponent during offense and neutral, but I'm aware it's an opinion that definitely isn't shared by everyone. Though this fact isn't surprising to me, since fighting games are still art and art IS subjective, and what is good or bad is going to VARY from person to person. And one of the things I value in the fighting game is unique characters that set them selves apart from each other, whether that be in terms of movement speed, defense, and ESPECIALLY game plan and unique system mechanics ONLY available to that character. It's one of the main reasons that I didn't like DragonBallFighterZ, since when that game launched the game felt very homongenized, and in that way didn't feel like an Arc System works Title at all, especially when you compare DBFZ to Arc System Work's earlier titles like GGXRD and BBCF where the characters were JUST AS complicated as the universal system mechanics themselves. And it's not just a problem I have with Arc either, since even more newer titles from other developers suffer from this issue I have with Homogenization, with games like the new Melty Blood, and even Tekken 7 suffering from this exact same problem ( infamous FGC Content creator Aris himself ADMITS that Tekken 7 is homongenized). Currently, games like BBCF, GGXRD, and SC6 are my favorite fighting games since all three have what I'm looking for, with BBCF being my number one, since that currently is the most unique fighting game currently out on the market IMO. I say all of this because if your love for the game is not there your chances of wining are MUCH lower, and those people will always be behind the curve of those who ACTUALLY enjoy the game. (High prize pool or not). So as someone who doesn't particularly care for footsie based fighting games in the first place ( like KOF, Street Fighter, DNF DUEL, GBFVS) the recent million dollar announcement for SF 6 doesn't do much for me in terms of motivating me to play the game. The only positive I see is that other fighting game developers may feel the need to have prize pools, to match their competitors to help keep interest in their games for casuals outside a particular community. That being said, I'm happy for Street Fighter fans , GBVS fans with the new update, and footsie based fans in general though. Overall, seeing a solid BB player make content for the game is always a treat. Keep up the grind Kizzie!
