After 61 years on this planet, I still find it difficult to imagine the universe just going on......forever. Like you could launch a spaceship in any direction, with some infinitely renewable drive system and just keep going in a straight line for the rest of time, and be no nearer the edge than when you started. Just can't wrap my head around it...

"In a couple of years, we're gonna launch the James Webb Space Telescope" Just how old is that thread?

And then there could be a small section of a circuit board that dwarfs our universe, an infinite amount in size, 🤔

NASA have a daily update of the Voyager probes on Twitter (I will NOT refer to it as any else) and it's both fascinating & sad. Sad because these probes are so unimaginably far away.

Sun dials would be more useful on Venus, they would tell you days weeks and months for half a year?

3:25, so you’re telling me that Venus is a robot graveyard.

If you want to feel utterly insignificant, watch the animation comparing the size of our solar system to the monster that is TON618. 😳

There are more more atoms in a single water molecule than there are stars in the entire solar system!

Fine. Ok brainiacs, why can't we use light speed, warp speed or ludicrous speed to travel through space?

1) We don't have the tech to move that fast, nor the tech to allow us to survive it. Yet. 2) It would take all of the energy in the universe to move a mote of dust to the speed of light. By current understanding. Current thoughts on how to move fast through space to get to different places in the galaxy fast, involves folding space and moving through worm holes. Who knows what future science has in store for us.

Nothing with mass can reach lightspeed, since you'd need infinite energy to accelerste to thst speed. You can get close with enough power, but never reach it. Warp drives might be physically possible. They require really strange particles with negative mass, which our current understanding of the laws of physics says might be possible, but we haven't seen them. There's also a massive power requirement (on the level of an entire galaxy's output) and some other safety concerns. However, since this involves bending and stretching space while your ship stands still, this doesn't break the lightspeed barrier. Another idea is shortcuts through wormholes, which might be possible to exist. But again it would rely on things we don't actually know to exist, weird particles to keep the wormhole stable. There might also be something we have no idea of, or maybe our models are wrong. Maybe there is something like hyperspace (though here's hoping it's not the immaterium. Go watch the Movie Event Horizon for a possible scenario.) Or the infinite improbability drive. But it remains possible that we'll never really become an interstellar species thanks to our universe not allowing the lightspeed limit to be broken or circumvented.

I live on acreage surrounded by state forests & national parks. I went to open my door a couple of nights ago, only to find a huntsman spider the size of a side plate on the door handle. Believe me when I say I leapt backwards at ludicrous speed!

Can't use ludicrous speed because we don't know how to print plaid that fast.
