I LOVE FANFIC! I am a proud former fanfiction writer, and I honestly think writing fanfic can teach you a lot about writing, and prepare you to write good original fiction. A lot of great authors got their start in fanfic.
So I'm talking about the specific things I think fanfic writers can do really well b/c of our fannish backgrounds. This isn't all universal! Not every fanfic writer is amazing, or develops deep craft skills, but a lot do! It's also 100% OK to write fic for fun, and not to practice to become a professional writer.
I should add: fanfic wasn't my ONLY exposure to writing education, training and becoming a professional writer. I have a degree in Journalism and experience in that form of writing, as well as marketing. I also read A LOT (reading is a very important part of learning structure and craft!). But fanfiction was my ONLY experience with fiction before I wrote a novel. My first novel did get me an agent, so I say fanfiction served me pretty well! YMMV.
Verbal messiness: I mean civil discourse, not civic haha! And, hey, turns out transmogrify isn't wrong! But really I meant "transplant" :D
