Part of the Mountain Rescue UK first aid kit is Oxygen and is a crucial part of any search and rescue team’s response equipment, which assists in many medical situations. Buxton Mountain Rescue, as well as all other mountain rescue teams in the UK, carry several different response bags onto the hill. Team members undergo regular first aid training, with extensive training to be able to safely and extensively use all of the search and rescue gear used by the team in the Peak District National Park.
The response bags carried by Buxton mountain rescue consist of:
Bag 1 which contains the medical kit.
Bag 2 which contains two bottles of Oxygen.
Bag 3 which contains Entonox
Bag 4 splints, casualty (sleep) bag and other items to make the casualty comfortable.
Bag 5 large casualty bag
Bag 6 vacuum (all body splint) mattress.
And a Mountain Rescue Bell Stretcher.

I hope I never will need oxygen out in the mountains, but it is good to know that rescue teams carry the stuff and knows how to use it well. Having 10 kgs in your backpack while rushing to an incident scene deserves a lot of creed! So well done - this is a nice instructional movie!

Hi Arctic, thanks for the comments.

I can see why this isn’t the most popular bag to carry, but I a hugely grateful you do. A suggestion for a video would be a overview of incident management, what is involved in facilitating a rescue from when the first call is received. Another suggestion is the use of radios and how you overcome the challenges of using them in the mountains where reception can be problematic

Hi Andy, thanks for the comments. Good ideas. We already have a video planned called "The anatomy of a Rescue" or something like that. About the start to finish of a rescue from the phone text received to the casualty in the Ambulance or helicopter. A video of the Team Radios is a good idea. I'll put your idea to the Film team and see what we can do. Many thanks.

Re oxygen use. I Apologise if you are aware. Have a look at Coroners prevention of deaths report REG 28 (ref Lyn HADLEY 2021). Dangers of oxygen adiabatic compression/friction velocity build up. Ensuring cylinder regulator is closed before opening main cylinder slowly. Contrary to your video this is exactly what the REG 28 notice is highlighting. I am commenting with the highest regards for your professionalism and commitment to save life. Just wanted to make you aware if not already. Contact me for further discussion if you wish.

HI Robert, thanks for the comment. You are correct and the Hadley 2021 is not the only incidence of this problem. The oxygen policies of all Mountain Rescue Teams nationally have been changed/re-inforced as a consequence.

Hi interesting question. At the moment we don't but we will be introducing them in January 2022 and training all our medics to use them.

Why don’t you use CD cylinders?

Hi the cylinders we use are supplied to us by the Ambulance service. When we use one on a job they give us a fresh one.
