The choice of the right frame rate for creating digital online videos can be a tricky subject.
In this episode I share my experience in how I pick mine for each project. We will talk about 25fps, 30fps, 50fps, 60fps, 100fps, 120fps and 240fps and why we should use one over another in different circumstances:
00:55 Why using the same frame rate for your project, editing and export/upload
01:34 Personal preferences: why using 25fps?
03:10 What are your camera’s frame rates and resolutions? 24Fps?
04:55 What's your project? Filming an interview at 25fps and 100fps
06:03 Is your editing gear powerful enough for your frame rate? Can it support 24fps?
06:30 Why using slow motion? Filming sports and Run&Gun shoots at 120fps
08:36 Using slow motion to stabilize your footage at 120fps
08:55 Choosing the frame rate for animations and transitions
09:37 Use the frame rate to balance the lighting conditions

Was randomly looking up smth mostly unrelated (examples of fps to check out on my 4K TV) & the title of this vid intrigued me as I used to edit videos long ago.. & ahh, what a pleasant surprise! ♡ So informative (& helpful captions too!) & it brought back of lot of editing vibes & nostalgia, loool especially over "29.97"/30fps which I did prefer for vidding projects (mostly music videos for fannish fun) due to smth about timing being better with an evenly dividable? number of frames per second, Idek kno as it was so long ago now, haha but I'd worked with a variety, depending on the source materials & spent a lot of time converting (as I used some basic editors back then like Pinnacle Studio) & other things to make it all work together! But then the explanation of using things (or wanting the ~possibility of using things) like slowmo & video effects potentially affecting what rate one shd get sources in, was an interesting refresher of how much work it could be! Overall it almost makes me simultaneously inspired & overwhelmed for when/if I ever get back into it, & the info is appreciated! So I'll look forward to checking out more of your stuff at some point too.. thanks! xD

Hi Mamo, loved the video! I have a question for you. I film and produce edits of motorbike racing. In the past, I have filmed everything in 50fps, and the slowed clips down which I'd like to appear in slow motion. During filming, i'm not always sure which clips I'd like to have in slow motion, and which I won't. I film riders racing round the track, and also B roll footage. What do you think is my best option for frame rates? Film everything in 120? Pick and choose frame rates depending on what I think I'm going to use the clip for?
@MamoAir
@MamoAir Год назад
Hellp there. Thanks for the comment. Hope the video helped. If you are constantly filming only action, I would keep the frame rate at 120fps. Because whenever I have in mind to switch framerate, sometimes I forget to go back to the previous frame rate and mess up the clips. So I recommend to keep the same frame rate to avoid that. Bear in mind though that 120fps hold a lot of storage. But in this case you have the option to slow down any shot. Hope it helps. Subscribe and join ny community

interesting video! I always film in 50P (europe) so I can slow my footage easily down by 50% in post. But for shooting stage shows, dance performances,... I don't need slowmo. So I can shoot this at 25P with a shutter of 1/50? (So I have more light hitting the sensor = better low light) I know my auto shutter will never drop below 1/50 for shooting inside. And I can mix 25P and 50P if I understand correctly. I shoot with a panasonic GH5S ans DVX200

If you record at 50p and playback timeline at 25p what happens to the extra frames...great video cheers Barry
@MamoAir
@MamoAir 3 года назад
Hi Barry. Thanks for checking the video, glad it was helpful. It is a bit tricky to explain this stuff through a comment but to give a quick answer to your question...here it is. If you drag a 50fps clip on a 25fps sequence, your editing software adapts your footage to that sequence, so it would play normally at real speed, but at 25fps. The clip still has 50fps though, so on the timeline, you can slow it down at 50% and make the most out of your slowmotion. Now there are w ways to shoot slowmotion but this is the most common way for users' cameras, I hope your camera is part of that niche and this should answer your question.

Very good video but screen refresh rate hz needs to match the video frame rate to avoid choppy playback especially budget pc monitors hdmi only displays a max 60hz as some devices cant automatically adjust the refresh rate to match the frame rate of the video source, thats why i create 60fps videos for online viewing as most devices can play 60fps without choppy playback and seems to be more common nowadays ,for 25-50fps refresh is 50hz refresh rate and 30-60fps is 60hz refresh rate

My Panasonic TV Netflix app is fixed at 60hz yet the content which I assume is made in 24 or 25fps still looks 'filmic' and fine and not choppy at all, same goes for broadcast content which is 50hz, how come?
@videocreation5206
@videocreation5206 10 месяцев назад
You're tv will more than likely have Auto refresh rate to match match video source fps that gives you smooth video playback at 24fps or 60fps. Computer monitor's are set by the graphics card that needs to match the framerate, for example 60fps would be 60hz, 24fps would be 24hz

Can cameras do 100fps or are those film cameras? Ps was wondering about that mask section where you said you need to edit the oath 120 times. I'm no film editor, but can't you use tracking here and than use those tracking points to guide a vector point of the path? I mean such a thing must be possible right I know there are automated methods for this

@Mamo Air If RU-vid is youre main delivery channell and it is consumed on modern TV's, PC monitors and mobile screens wich all work on 60FPS in Pal countries, would you still shoot and export in PAL 25 FPS? Thanks

Hello Mladen. Thanks for checking the video and for the comment. Really, I would not worry to much about frame rate unless for professional work. The day to day viewer...and also professionals to be honest, could not tell what frame rate has been used. Just play with them and see what best suits your need and which one gives tells better your story and serve the purpose of the video. I still film all my videos a 24 / 25fps and when I need slowmo I go to 60 or 120 now. Thanks

So, if I have some footage in 23,976fps, some footage in real 24fps, and one drone shot in 29,976fps and I wanna do one video with all of these footage, what can I do for smooth result? What timeline and export fps settings do you recommend? Thanks a lot.

Hello there. Thanks for the message. I would recommend to set your sequence at the lower frame rate, 23,976 and then drop the other material in that sequence too. Everything will work fine 🙃

I had this exact issue too EB! Thanks for asking the question 👍🏻. I’ve also just found out that if a drone clip still looks juddery, in FCPX you can apply Optical Flow to that clip and it smoothes out the judder. I’m still trying to find out what is best to set all my cameras at..! 🤣👍🏻

@MamoAir
@MamoAir 3 года назад
Ciao Davide. I have a Google Pixel 6 and Im in the UK (PAL). My Pixel 6 will only video at 30fps. Im being told on a Pixel FB page that I don't need to video in 25fps - that that is outdated because Im filming for social media (30fps). Is this right advice.

Hello Yves. Thanks for the question. The word "cinematic" is just a therm and, in my opinion, is overused and misunderstood. You can create a great video with any frame rate. To answer specifically to your question, do not worry if you do not have the 24fps frame rate. No one will ever notice that you are filming at 25fps. It would only matters if you were filming for a proper film production. For the web, you can film at any frame rate. Just film as much as you can and have fun. And try the different frame rates to see what works best for you and your video. Hope this helps! Ciao

@@MamoAir At 24fps when you not panning extremely slowly the footage looks bad, even pro youtubers promoting 24fps have jittery footage, not sure why nobody is talking about it. My fps is always double the shutter to achieve nice motion blur. My camera does 60fps 4K max, that is why I am thinking going 30fps timelines as i can slow down 60 when panning for smooth footage, not sure if its good idea to use 60 over 50 fps on 25fps timeline, still researching that.. What would you recommend because I have a feeling my vids are not so good video quality and that can be better.. Ok I have a Kit lense 12-60 only for now.. Can I shoot in 50fps and just buy a much better lens or change on 25Fps/100Mbps? P.S. In my GH5 I have Variable Frame Rate on 8bit 25fps also for slowmotion what I need sometimes.

Hello. Thanks for the message. As I mention in the video, if you do not film any action or shots where you need slowmotion, I would recomment to use 25fps with the highest bit rate possible. Bear in mind that the higher bitrate also the heavier file but better quality ;)

@@sanjtiwari5364 - the literal difference at regular speed btwn 24fps & 25fps is just "one more frame per second", that's it.. as he said it depends on how much you want to happen in any given specific second or group of seconds or ~minutes of film, lol for example do you want any kind of slowmo or special effects at a certain point? those little moments would determine how many frames you could use & what multiples you may prefer to work with, etc & if you like "even" numbers you may prefer 24 or 30 but there's no logical difference, it's just more frames = more work overall = smoother action. Good luck on your projects! ☆

Hello. Thanks for your video. What about slowmotion in a 25fps timeline? Does 120fps works fine? And also if its ntsc 119.88 and want to use it for slow motion in a pal 25fps timeline.
@MamoAir
@MamoAir 4 года назад
Hello George, thanks for checking the video and for your question. This is always a tricky subject. The quick answer to your question is the you can use the frame rates you want also on a 25fps timeline. For better performance I always recommend, for filming your slow motion, to use frame rates that are direct multiples of your project frame rate. Or viceversa, if you film at 119.88fps, use a project frame rate which is 29.97fps. The problem you can face by using 119.88fps on a 25fps sequence is either the duplication of certain frames of the lack of other frames. These issues are hardly noticeable by untrained eyes anyway, so for online content it is ok, but if you work in broadcast, you do no want to mix frame rates. Hope this helps
