We've began operation on our R3 Superbike engine! In this episode, we go over most of the components that will be utilized in this motor, as well as some secret tricks we are experimenting with. So far, we have taken the engine completely apart and inspected every component inside. Once everything is cleaned, polished, and prepped, we will start the reassembly. This build is like nothing we have ever done before and we are looking forward to it's completion. So stay tuned!

I'm actually impressed to see that the engine has taken such a hard beat on the race track. However, do you guys agree that the R3's engine is very powerful? I mean, it can withstand pressure even from stock? For example my R3 has approx 1700 miles on it. I have twisted the throttle a couple of times but I still feel like I am pushing the R3 too much and unintentionally damaging it. How does the engine perform in overall outside a race track if you drive it normally and sometimes twist the throttle, will that damage the engine at all? What about revving? And lastly what about oil? Would love to get an interesting answer! I love your series and I will continue to watch it
@TSTindustries
@TSTindustries 6 лет назад
We are currently using Motul synthetic oil in our race bikes. That oil will get you very good protection for engine internals. There are other choices as well. Yamalube is another you can consider. Revving your bike, and riding it around the streets really doesn't stress your motor very much. Just take a look at our Supersport build from last year which can be seen in our "R3 Street or Track" video. This bike under two racers got on the podium many times last year. It saw about 15 track days, and around 20 races. It was ridden at 100% of what it can provide all that time. We changed the oil regularly and the bike kept going. At the end of the season we disassembled the motor to see what is going on inside and refresh it for this coming season. Only preventive maintenance was required. Nothing was really wrong with any of the parts even though we demanded a lot of performance out of this little beast. Yamaha builds a strong motor so as long as you maintain it properly, take it into the dealer for any recalls, you should be good for many years to come. All that said I recommend that you go to the track for spirited riding and leave the street to commuting. Cheer! Bart

Any R&D we do trickles down to the street. The street scene is our biggest market, and it pays for the research we do. It wouldn't be prudent to just make shiny fun parts for one bike. @TSTindustries
@TSTindustries 6 лет назад
The term superbike has nothing to do with size of bike. I am just going to copy and paste another reply I wrote a few days ago because I am tired of typing the same thing to these comments. Go look up the rules for any racing organization. The classes are typically divided into Supersport, Superbike, Moto. All the modifications performed to this bike preclude it from racing in Supersport classes, so the bike only qualifies for racing in SB and Moto classes. Therefore it is a Superbike. If you want to reference this please see CCS, ASRA, or WERA rules.

Not unless you have your transmission falling out of gear often. Back cutting the transmission gear dogs prevents the selected gear from falling out under high load and RPM. This is an issue we experienced on these bikes last year.

wait... even if it's a DC-CDI ignition, how are you getting electricity back to the battery to run the system for extended periods? Or maybe the better question to ask is how long of a race can you get in before having to recharge the battery/put in a fresh battery?
@TSTindustries
@TSTindustries 4 года назад
Our setup has a total loss charging system, which means it has no charging components. We calculated the amp hours necessary to run the longest of the races we participate in, then multiplied by a factor of safety and that has been working for us as long as we keep a fresh battery in the bike. The engine starts are the worst. If we have a few race restarts it gets dicey. We haven't ever run out totally but have come in from a race at 11.4v. Our longest race is a half hour.

You could do that, but then you also have to cast a taller cylinder block, or find minimally shorter rods and potentially have enough length on the bottom of the cyl block.
@wikwyre
@wikwyre 6 лет назад
I am a bit puzzled - In the absence of a charging system (stator/mag removal), how do you plan on keeping the bike running for long durations (GP race, etc) - Battery alone? Isn't that taking some pretty big risks? Obviously necessary to install a new battery into the bike in between sessions - But instead of removing stator, and leaving the battery - would you not have lost more weight in removing the battery and starter and using a remote start/bump starter?
@TSTindustries
@TSTindustries 6 лет назад
niteshadesc2 this is my favorite question in a while. It is so much more enjoyable to answer tech questions than respond to the typical banter, so firts of all, thank you. The primary goal behind removing the charging system was to remove rotating mass from the crank and remove the parasitic effects of inertia and charging drag. This causes the motor to rev to the power band faster so we can get usable power quicker than a typical bike. The centripetal acceleration on the center plane of the bike is also reduced causing direction changes of the entire bike to require less force. The actual weight reduction is the secondary goal. We removed around 7 pounds cumulative with charging parts. We use a large lithium battery that provides double the Ah than stock, yet is roughly 5lb lighter, so we lost 12 lb total there. We have tested this setup thoroughly and found that we have three engine starts and one hour of continuous operation before we drop to 12v. The bike does not start to act up until about 11.7v. our GT races are 25 minutes so we're all good.
@TSTindustries
@TSTindustries 6 лет назад
The starter does not remain engaged after the motor is running so there is nothing gained by removing it except weight shed. We could potentially remove it for just weight reduction but it is not uncommon to crash during a race. In that case you want to start the bike asap and then continue the race if the bike is usable.
@wikwyre
@wikwyre 6 лет назад
TSTindustries thanks for the explanation! I now understand your logic on the charging system removal.

@TSTindustries

It's possible to punch out the cylinder bores to +2mm. That will give you 339.4 cc. I don't think there is enough meat in the cylinder block to go any bigger.

Rough porous surface have more oil surface (between metal to metal contact) =lesser friction. This has been proven in suspension technology
@TSTindustries
@TSTindustries 6 лет назад
Then why do bearing manufacturers strive for smoother and smoother bearing components? You have to consider the fact that the oil on main bearings has to constantly flow, and at flow velocities where turbulence is not a factor there is less flow resistance over a smooth surface.

@amaeyparadkar9632
@amaeyparadkar9632 6 лет назад
MT03 -TR compression ratio is not equal to more power but more compression is equal to more torque per cycle. And torque and power can be converted to each other, like 6th gear has lot of power and 1st have a lot of torque.
@mt03-tr23
@mt03-tr23 6 лет назад
Amaey Paradkar what is the requirement for more cycles, for example R3 is 15,000 (Rpm)cycles ( google translate )
@amaeyparadkar9632
@amaeyparadkar9632 6 лет назад
MT03 -TR No such specific requirement. Stronger and lighter components spins faster. Your fuel and ignition system should cope at whatever RPM you want your engine to run. My Duke 390 is limited at 10,500 RPM and I pushed it to 12,000 RPM, it just reduces the life of engine.

That question is too broad. All those manufacturers produce many engines that would need to be compared against each specific model. Then I would also be nice to see a light and heavy rider drive both bikes in the city and on the high way to see which bike gets better gas mileage. But, until then. Can you please help me out and point me into the right direction to send their for I can send my parts out and or get parts made from certain companies. That will be much appreciated.

The pistons are Spears Racing spec, and are made to Gregg Spears' specification by a leading forged piston manufacturer. The rods are made by Carillo. The transmission undercut is done through Spears as well. Everything else is our black magic done by machine shops we work with to our specifications. Unfortunately this information will remain secret for the purpose of protecting our time investment and funneling this type of business through us. If you have the money we can make it happen, but you have to be comfortable with saying goodbye to a few thousand dollars.

I will even pay you guys to put it back together therefore you don’t have to worry about me taking it apart and measuring the rods and pistons LOL. Therefore I can tell the public the specs LOL 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 Because I do want to be the first person to have a race spect Yamaha FZ 600 engine. Yes I know! It’s practically the R6! just well.. the doctors went through her and they dedowngraded a couple parts, haha. But no, seriously. I would love to eventually race you guys on my fz6 against your r3.And or you guys have the same rider who is skinny and one whims on the heavy side to ride both of the bikes in the city and on the highway and put them through their paces. And then he or she tell us which one they prefer LOL. Anyways thank you so much for a listing down the companies. I had the company’s name that made the rods. Because it says it on them. But I didn’t catch the name where you sent out the transmission to. You know what! Just do everything that you did to this R3 to my bike! 😂😂😂😂 because in all seriousness. I want to be the one to have the worlds first extremely ligtest FZ6 and fastest OEM engine built. But I’ve watched all of your videos. And I have a couple concerns. Like for one apparently you can’t do too much dark magic to an engine because then it won’t be legal for racing. But I really don’t care if it’s legal or not for racing. again I want to have the worlds lightest and fastest Yamaha FZ6. With the stock engine. I’m a Diesel mechanic. I know what needs to be done. I just don’t know of a shop or shops that can do what I want to have done. Because it’s a small engine. All of my local machine shop shops say that they don’t have the right equipment for that small engine! Well guess what! You all have lost my business, LOL. But, now I do. And I Owe you a lot! I’ve been looking and looking and looking!

This bike is a pure race bike used in a track setting only and competing in the CCS Southeast Region in the Superbike Class. Under the class specification, this bike is a Superbike. Reference our other videos for more information or look up CCS/ASRA/WERA racing rules.

I don't think John has made many videos at all so it is not his wheelhouse. He did the best he could and we gave him a spot on the show so that it is not the same host every time. Your point is noted. -BR

Why waste your time and money building a bike that no one even races, why wouldn't you just build an R6? It's like trying to make a minibike with a lawnmower engine into a MotoGP bike. And 50hp? Come on, just a waste of time
@TSTindustries

You are incorrect in thinking no one races these. The 300-500 CC racing classes are on the rise. Motoamerica has a 300 class for Ninja 300, R3, and RC390 bikes. There are European circuits of same caliber for these small displacement bikes. Everytime we show up to a racing event the small bike grids look bigger. So the small bike sport is in expansion. We also race bigger bikes. We have a factory R1 and R6 that race in FMRRA and CCS series. We build all kinds of bikes. We just wanted to do an extravagant project out of a bike that most people wouldn't take that far. This series is a documentary of what we are doing..
@billygoat382

There is also a race series for the R3 in Australia.

sounds really expensive...isnt it way cheaper to just buy a bigger faster bike? and then you dont have those little plastic toy front forks that look deadly over 80 mph...and you get real brakes and tires too
@TSTindustries

Bigger bike, bigger racing classes, same problem. And besides, we already build bigger race bikes. Our stable has an R1, R6, several CBR600RRs and a couple R3s. We wanted to do something nobody else is doing, and here it is.

Just to clarify, I superbike is a leader by a super sport is a 600 and another three is worthless. And an r3 is not a super bike so try to get your facts straight
@TSTindustries

Man, you guys really need to read some facts before you start typing. Go see the rules of any AMA sanctioned racing organization like CCS and WERA. Superbike is a class within all displacements.

Yea, I saw a few people commenting about the 'super bike' term used. I guess they are confused due to the usual definition used in racing of between 800-1000cc motorbikes. Or the "street slang" of basically a 'high end' motorcycle, much like a 'Super car'.
@TSTindustries
@TSTindustries 6 лет назад
What about the STK class in national racing series. That is a 1000cc class, yet there is another class called SB. There are no set definitions for these things, but if you do some research into present day Superbike classes then you will see many displacements included in that category. I just read these comments, written so poorly both in regards to grammar and spelling, by authors that are self-proclaimed authorities on the subject, and I find it very funny. At that point I just can't help myself but to fire back with some snarky, fact-filled comment, that maybe will make these guys rethink what they wrote.

@@TSTindustries Ok, here goes. A Superbike is an official designation by racing organisations for any motorcycle above 600cc's. The term has since been used by manufacturers to sell motorcycles to the general public. Supersports (600cc); and Superbikes(1000cc), are generally race-replica motorcycles designed for Street use. Many can be modified slightly for racing use (Track days and such). A sportbike is the generic term for ANY motorcycle with race-inspired fairings, suspension, brakes, etc. The old term “Race on Sunday, sell on Monday “ has never been promoted as well as by motorcycle manufacturers. I hope this clears up the confusion a bit.
