I waz neva sold on Beats until I experienced them first hand. Not as a fashion statement but the fact that they DRAMATICALLY enhanced the audio quality over the spaghetti string headphones of previous generations. The built in powered amp made them an instant sale 4me after that.
People complained about this, but dre purposely wanted them to hit hard for rap music. they were never designed with sound quality in mind per say, it was loud @ hard hitting
I was only bandwagoning on the Beats craze back then, however, in all honesty, It was not at par with my old JBLs or my fave Sennheiser. But I admire the marketing and hype it made surrounding it whoever thought of it.
Beats by Dre brought the best out of headphones from competitors. I remember buying skull candy headphones for 14.99 thinking it was the best quality ever 😂
When I first bought my beats they were the best headset I ever owned until they sold it to Apple. Now, they are just slightly below average. I use my beats pro in the gym but compared to my buds 2 pro it is seriously lacking
When they can sell headphones for 550 to suckers who just want the logo on their heads, where does Beats fit in? Maybe Beats was the 3B spent to spark a great idea that was always there, but Beats is pretty much dead. They were so successful in getting the masses to accept the wireless future. The success of "Air" sound and Beats favoring Apple devices took away their appeal. It also gave other companies the chance to expose them as the hype jobs they were.
In all honesty, beats didn’t have the best sound, they were decent but Bose has always had a superior product. Beats by Dre were popular because of the status and culture, they weren’t terrible, but they were never the best headphones available.
The downfall in my opinion is when folks started to dissect beats and found out it’s no different or better than some skull candies or other similar products. They weren’t that much better once you got your hands on some and then you compared them to the lower priced options and you realize it’s just a status symbol. I didn’t fall for it
Dr. Dre is just a studio gangster anyways so if more people took the time to dig into his past they would see that he was just the equivalent of an actor and playing a role so to speak.
I didn’t fall for the price either, I just found some people who sell them for $200 cheaper and just got them for the low, I have 3 of them now 😂🤣🤣, great buy!!
@PATTIMURA_75 Ya for real, he didn't deserve anything from Scott Storch and i bet he didn't even help Scott out when Scott was going through his personal struggles.
Basically when Beats came out they were _slightly_ better than the “average” headphone but they were never audiophile/studio engineer sound level but aesthetically they looked great, had a big marketing campaign and a celebrity super producer telling you these were the way to go for “true” sound and many bought it. I don’t fault Beats, that’s the free market, that’s why I think Apple ultimately bought the company because no matter how you feel about Beats they had the largest market share and the youth culture, you have to remember audiophiles who know better are in the MINORITY of the population the majority of the masses just follow trends, there you go, the story of Beats.
Very good point about the audiophiles. They love to argue over technicalities that most of us don't even understand. Of course, they LOVE the fact that we don't understand, because that makes them feel special but as you said, they are in the MINORITY. LOL!
Great video bro! really well done. I still have a pair of solos but I am like the only dude at the gym with dre beats. 8 years ago everyone had a pair. I think alot comes down to the celebrities pushing it. Which now rappers and sports athletes know they can get paid deals to promote products, the smart ones wont do it for free. lol
Brooo I VIVIDLY remember the consumer headphone war of 2013 when beats first got big. Everyone wanted them at school, especially the cool kids... Best part of the whole situation was seeing fellow students embrace OTHER brands like v-moda, audio technica, bose etc.... You can say what you want about beats not sounding good but fact of the matter is most headphone enthusiasts under 30 wouldn't have ever started if it weren't for beats marketing strategy... The more popular they got, the more people searched for a better(neutral) alternative
2013?! I remember friends wearing this pre 2009 and we're so happy about it, my joke even back then we're that I could take 2 'singing' congratulations cards, rewire those speakers to a 3.5mm cable and have about just as good quality as they had. The wars that started is unforgettable
@@creativeboy1424 I guess we are both aging ourselves here 🤣 but yeah I consider the war to have started right around 2012/13 when phones still had audio Jacks and most people still had common sense 😣😭
I bought the fake Beats for $25 in China and they looked real. The funny thing was taking them around Jeju Island and a lot of my friends wanted to try them on. They flipped when I told them they were counterfeit. LOL!
Beats blew up around 2009..by 2014 it was starting to become corny due to mass production. by 2015 it was out of style. They had a very succesfull 5 year run and made a ton of money. The goal was to mass hype sell and then get out. They succeeded.
This was a great retrospective, very interesting, I just remember hearing a while back that Dre made a lot of money from the Beats brand. But the background information was really interesting. Your style of videos just gets better and better, the editing and just the overall style is really professional. 💯👏👍
Beats were better than earpods but There's always other headphones that sound better Like sennheiser HD 600s and the cx 400bt or the JBL 400bt or the Skullcandy Indy earbuds Remember those
Beasts were Ok certainly not the best sounding but hey you had your beats and you LOOKED cool. However for me Bose and SURE have been the best sounding headphones or earbuds that I’ve ever used
Beats were always seen in my neck of the woods as headphones that are made for people that have money but don’t have a “sophisticated” taste for the instrumentals
And people trying to impress and buy it because of the logo, the brand. No disrespect to Dr Dre but even middle and low income people bought them because everyone else was buying them.
I bought my Solo 3’s in Germany and they’ve lasted 6 years so far with just a few $10 replacements. I like them but I understand that they aren’t the best out there.
The thing I noticed about Beats headphones/earbuds was that they were made beautifully but didn’t last long. I remember buying my first pair of Beats earbuds and remember loving how great they looked but they only lasted like a month until the sound went out in one earbud. On top of that these earphones aren’t cheap, those earbuds alone that I bought were priced at around $150+ taxes and that was around 2011/2012. Beats scammed the shit outta Apple with that deal because Beats is nowhere near worth that much considering how no one really cares about it now, ironically people are mainly buying AirPods which Apple created and is now the most popular earphones today. Looking back Apple didn’t even need to make that deal.
I've been through 2 pairs, one bud set and an over ear set. The over ear pair are still working if not barely hanging in there being they have weak hinges.
@@yaknow9341 crazy how cheaply made Beats are, yet costs so much money. What a waste. I remember buying a pair of Skullcandy earbuds for like $20 back in 2015 and it lasted me until I decided to buy new earphones which was like two years later, they still were working at the time I bought new earphones.
I remember my nephew buying headphones. He raved about them. I tried them out. When I picked them up, immediately thought low quality construction and cheap materials. I'm no audiophile, but the sound didn't seem any better than my cheap $20 dollar earphones. Told him I was sure for what he paid he could get much better. They broke within a couple of weeks. Someone else I knew bought earbuds that died within a month. Heard other similar stories...They really didn't seem like a good quality/performance to price value to me.
@@cactusjack2264 this guy said skull candy 😂 bro those earbuds are the epitome of ass. Every pair I had the one side would stop working less than two months. They’re awful and cheap
@@BoatsNhoes824 wow, tough luck for you. I had a pair of earbuds from Skullcandy and they lasted two years until I decided to buy a new pair of earphones
Beats were always a aesthetic thing more than actually having industry leading sound quality i remember realising this when my older brother showed me headphones half the price which had better sound quality but at the time i still wanted beats for the brand feel as a kid, and after apple bought them it basically killed the brand because not only was it no longer the main aesthetic for celebs and artists but most of apples effort was put into the iPhone accessories vs the beats side
Beats were a fashion statement but they pushed it as studio quality headphones which any producer/engineer could tell you was a complete lie. They sounded ok for regular consumers but they definitely didn't have a flat response and there were plenty of other products out there that sounded 100 times better. I never understood it, personally. I thought they looked ugly as hell lol I guess people just want to be trendy
I don’t think u truly have an understanding of audio engineering. Lol Only one version of beats were marketed for studio use and that was the studios. Here’s a secret, NOBODY IS MIXING AND MASTERING WITH HEADPHONES! Lol
@@emericas9 Heres another secret, not everyone has a perfectly sanitized room to mix with monitors. Using a reference track and mixing in headphones is perfectly doable and its good to get different points of view. Its actually far better than trying to mix in a room with inaccurate low end or lower mid range bouncing around. Just make sure you have FLAT headphones and use a reference, compare frequencies one piece at a time, check in mono etc etc. Any experienced engineer can mix in headphones, maybe you just don't understand what it takes.
I got the Executive WIRED version that took BATTERIES...and the damn POWER BUTTON suddenly broke🤯🤯🤯 I tore them in half and went to Target for Skullcandy's Ink'd and never looked back.
Wow I had an HTC when they had beats by Dre speakers and the sound was impeccable. Then I upgraded and the speakers were by the company that makes speakers for Infinity if I remember correctly. The sound quality went down in my opinion but I always wondered why the switch. Thank for the info KB!
@@POPDELUSION Yes that's the name I'm terrible with names 😂 it sucks when companies merge/switch hands and the product quality suffers. I felt betrayed when HTC switched from Beats to HK
@@urbangirlresin the umbrellas are insane, Harmon international own jbl, infinity, akg, and mark Levinson audio.... I highly recommend researching the story of JBL if you want more context, very sad and inspiring story
High end headphones started way before beats by dre... and beats by dre were never ever near high end and had a reputation for having too high a bass curve. They were also overpriced. They were never taken seriously in the music prodution arena. I had a par or 300 dollar all gold plated monster phones that (meek mill used to be seen with) and they broke right at the top of the band after a few months. I had a 150 dollar pair of monster in ear monitors which were very underwhelming from best buy. They were really just another come and go stauts symbol people spent money on when there were always many better options out there regardless of your listening needs.
Meanwhile, a 55 dollar pair of Creative Aurvana Lives smashes any beats or even monster(non-beats) headphones in terms of sound quality...just miles ahead. They are plasticky feeling, but are still probably better built too, lol. For the cost of one Beats headphone, you can get a Hi-res music player and a fantastic pair of headphones for a reputable brand. Ironically, people think "audiophile" and think expensive and built for snobs....but that is not true at all, you can find fantastic gear at very reasonable prices.
The amount that they’re getting from airpods is absolutely *astronomical!* Holy shh that’s insane! I did always wonder where beats went, makes sense now though so thank you for that information!
I don't ever recall them being as good as Anything from the Big Players in Audio for Sound Reproduction for the Money..... Sony, Phillips, Bose, Pioneer, etc
Only thing I hate about airpods is they so small n east to lose n every pair I had ended up going bad some way some how sound wise . Never had that problem w beats but also the only drawback for beats w me was imagine you outside bumping some jams on the big beats headphones n someone snatch em off ya head 😂😂😂 I’d be mad fr
When my son was a teenager, I bought him three pairs of beats one pair was eaten by the dog. Another pair was stolen at school, and I don’t know what happened to the third pair and then when he became an adult, he bought me a pair of beats.
Remember when Apple bought Beats it was of course for the headphone market for which Beats had the largest slice of the pie it was also for Beats music streamer, a lot of people forget Beats also had a music streaming app that Apple desperately wanted to get their hands on (it’s Apple Music today) as the music consumer market was shifting from buying songs and albums (iTunes) to just paying a monthly subscription for access to any song so yes to Apple what they paid for the company was a small price to pay for what they ultimately got back in the long run.
It was meant to be a trend. Extreme mass branding marketing then sell. They were prob not even top 5 best quality headphones you could get but it was a great business idea. Mission accomplished.
I have own about every pair of beats since they came out. In all honesty it was more about status. They had quality issues with the ear pads falling off or the rubber on top coming off. Also they were eq’d for bass but the rest of the frequency band was lost. Bose sound better in my opinion.
Eazy-E was going to create his own headphones and speakers before Dr.Dre without anybody's insight that goes to show you how advanced easy was if you would have been here he would have been in the billionaire status by now rest in peace Eazy-E
I bought a pair of refurbished beats From wish. I actually bought 2 pair 1 for my son, he has since broken them because he was 15 at the time of course. They are the best headphones I've ever had, I use them when I workout at the gym. The sound is crazy I have to turn down the sound to keep from going deaf. I have dropped them several times and I hit my head on the machines but the beats take the hit. Still going strong after 2 years. I work out for 3 hours and the battery last 2 hours so I bought a cable that goes from my phone to the headphones from Amazon. The headphones work off the battery of my phone. If something ever happened to these headphones I would buy another pair in a heartbeat, one of the best purchases I've ever made👍🏿😁
Apple didn’t buy beats by Dre because they were the best but because they were in the way. So they pay Dre to seat down don’t move and be quite and get out the way.
I never owned a beats headphone because the sound never impressed me in the stores, they were way overpriced fir what they could offer, other brands like Sennheiser and Audio-Technica blew it out of the water in sound quality department, but people loved the fashionable looks I guess.
The “style” wasn’t the only thing, they were very bass forward and people love bass. Beats never offered the best sound quality but the bass bias made them “fun”. You’re right that brands like Sennheiser offered far better audio quality
My sister was the first ones to bling them out and gave them to who… Lil Wayne who was seen at a game wearing them. She blew up after that blinging beats headphones
Mandela Effect - they aren’t Beats by Dre as so many remember. They are now Beats by Dr. Dre As crazy as it sounds, the Mandela effect changed it in our history. But hey, you remember the way I and many others do…
It's interesting to understand the impact of Beats ... Dr. Dre should've kept that business is what it seems ... Maybe further on, Beats could have introduced MP3 players, and after that, smartphones.
I was sold on them when I had on a pair with noise cancellation while cutting my lawn. I ran out of gas and didn’t even notice until a few passes and i happened to look down and realize that the mower wasn’t cutting grass. I took off the headphones and that’s when I realized that wasn’t even functioning due to running out of gas 😂
I been wondering this! Thanks KB! 🔥🔥 In the Early 2000's, Beats were in EVERY music video😅 Never thought that would end. I still want some Navy Blue beats😭
Great content! I never even knew Beats had acquired MOG which turned into Apple Music. I liked Beats over the ear headphones but I mainly got them for the status. They’re actually too expensive and there are plenty of cheaper options that sound as good on Amazon. Love my AirPods tho.
I remember all the hype about the Beats but i was into wraparound headphones. I tried the wraparound Beats for $100 in 2015 along with a pair of Skull Candy Hesh 2 for $20. Didn't take me long to sell the Beats wraparounds, but i still have my Skull Candy Hesh's today.
I came here to say the same thing. The other side of the story is that Dre was brought in by the father/son engineering duo behind the headphones and monster cables and they had their company taken from them by a savvy Dr. Dre. 😢
Good video, but you completely missed how Dre & Jimmy “stole” or “out negotiated” the brand & tech from the ORIGINAL creator, Monster (famous for their audio cables). - It’s a million/billion dollar lesson why you should never sign contracts you don’t understand and/or be in business meetings without a very competent attorney (at a minimum) next to you. - I feel bad for Monster… they screwed up royally 🤷🏻♂️
One day they just start falling apart. The foam at the top and sides for head and ear comfort, dry rots and dies. Plastic paint jobs dioxidizes and turn soft smeary clue finish. They're expensive garbage.😢 Skull Canu sounded almost as good for a fraction of the price but, last much longer !!! Wow.
I must admit as a big fan of Beats by Dr Dre, the sound quality from the headphones is awesome, the bass was on point, but they weren't really that loud. Matter of fact, i had bought 3 Beats Solo Gloss black, and another one with wireless. As a loyal fan of Beats, I'm still planning on buying another Beats Solo Black soon
I got the studio 3’s on sale around Christmas for $150. My solo 3’s still sound good, used them everyday at work for the last 3 years, still work flawlessly. I would get the studios. They have noise canceling like the AirPod pro’s and sound pretty good for $150, charge in probably 30 minutes and then last for I kid you not, 20 hours straight listening time. 15% battery lasted a 5 hour drive. I realize they aren’t the best sounding or best you can get, but all around user experience is great and as an IOS user, they sync immediately without any hassle and great bass and highs with okay mids. 8/10 all around.
Also very comfortable despite most reviews I’ve seen on RU-vid by headphone snobs. The solo’s hurt my ears after 3-4 hours of use, being on ear headphones. But the studios are champs.
The people who used beats and now airpods don't really care about audio quality, same as those who go for Bose or Sony. All are mass market cheap audio options. Sennheiser, B&O, B&W, Grado, Hifiman are companies that invested in the audio output rather than just giving the money to celebrities. Having a good set from any of these brands will make airpods feel like ear rape after.
I bought a pair of the “Beat’s” Studio (black) headphones early on and the were like sitting in my car with thousands of dollars in car audio! Awesome bass I’d NEVER heard in any headphones I’d owned prior to these!People called me stupid for paying $299 way back then but I told them;” You gotta try them!”#Beats#byDRE#🔊#🎧❤
You could’ve gotten way better audio quality from 100-150$ studio headphones. But they obviously don’t look as “cool” as beats. So I get why people bought into the marketing hype.
Now yes I’m sure . But at the time I had tried Sony, Pioneer, & Bose and none of those touched the bass heavy sounds most of us car audio people were looking for; and me like most worked a 40 hour job with nobody knowing what “Studio” brands you speak of without being in the biz! This was early on b4 “ALL” the hundreds of different brands dropped. And after all these years I kept duracell or energizer batteries out of mine while not in use and they still work years later! Only fake leather from head piece pealed only!#🎧🔊❤️🔥#Beats @@BrooklynBalla
What do you mean what happened to Beats? LITERALLY that’s the only headphones people are wearing in the gym lol. The big ones over the head (studio 3), or one of the two smaller options that go in the ear. Beats are everywhere!
EVERYTHING IS TEMPORARY AND NOTHING LASTS FOREVER. THEY CAME AND MADE BILLIONS ARE STILL HERE. THEY WERE VERY SUCCESSFUL. TF ARE YA'LL COMPLAINING ABOUT???
Beats was always trash. It was a overly hyped product from the start. Good sound quality was non-existent in any product ive ever tried in their lineup.
2Pac said it in his song it took Dr Dre six years to make one album! Dr. Dre in the beets by dre they did the same thing they came up made a fortune then they both came crashing down!😂😂😂
They did everybody a favor anyway. As an Audiophile myself Beats we’re nothing but overpriced garbage. It was a Fad you looked ridiculous wearing them and they were so susceptible to moisture. I watched my cousin go through 3 pairs while he $hit on me for buying $130 air pods for my regular commutes. Now he doesn’t even have a pair anymore.
The old school beats by Dre were by far beat sound quality compared to new ones they really did changed the old ones were better and still are to the new ones but that's just my opinion
When Beats was under Monster was their best time. Beat focused on getting endorsers and influencers, and the sound quality shifted. Yeah they released some other tech, even signed a deal to put their system in the Chrysler 300 touring. However they never were that great.
