She didn't have any stunted growth if anyone was actually alive back then would understand her style of Gangsta rap wasn't mainstream she took it as far as she could have taken it it's sad that's she's not even mentioned as one of the nicest female Emcees from the '90s R.I.P. Bo$$
100% agreed. Was a teenager in that era. Boss flow was crazy. No man was outshining her on a track. No matter where she was from, her bars captured the life. "Run, Catch and Kill" and "Don't Ring the Alarm" w/Spice 1 are still in my playlist. RIP BO$$
People forget that all of this information is on her album. She has phone calls from her parents saying she was never in the streets and grew up in a good life.

In '93, I was 15 going to therapy. A teenage Black boy from the hood was going to see a White female therapist from the 'burbs. One session, I brought the "Born Gangstaz" tape so I could play her "Deeper," which I felt articulated a lot of how I felt at the time, despite the obvious differences between myself and Bo$$. The therapist was blown away... Now that I'm a middle-aged adult, I feel that song even MORE. And it's genius how it is modeled around a therapy session. Bo$$ was way ahead of her time. R.I.P. Black Goddess... ✊🏽👑🖤
I don’t think he was homeless… I believe he wrote it as a low point when he was heavily addicted and buying drugs with a friend named “Mario” under a specific underpass in a Los Angeles neighborhood (at least that’s what he eluded to in his Scar Tissue book)

you gotta understand, man.. back when Boss came out, that’s all the labels were pushing around that time .. from about 92 - 94 they were signing and putting out any and everything that sounded rough, rugged, and raw… Boss just so happened to catch her break then.. Rest Up to her.. “Run, Catch, & Kill” was my favorite song/video by her..
@@rasio1859 No need to look it up when you lived through it. Boss was the first female rapper signed to Def Jam West ( in the 90s). Nikki D was signed to the original Def Jam in 1989.
Im 47 yes old Def jam West was started by Snoop Dogg I googled it for and five times I can tell you everybody on their roster the boss was the only female signed to Def jam
You put this mug up quick fast and in a hurry. RIP BO$$. Took it back 2 my middle school years. The female Papa Doc of hip hop. 4 those that know, they know
Great video bro! However, Nikki D was signed to Def Jam in 89. She has a song called "Lettin Off Steam" where Flava acknowledged her as the female on Def Jam.
She did get signed after Def Jam, Krayzie Bone signed her for Thugline Records back around 2001. She was merely featured on Thug On Da Line album, but she was still signed.
I was about 11-12 years old when she dropped that album. Born Gangstaz was something we had in my household and I was definitely listening to it when I probably shouldn’t have at that time, haha. I’ve still got the CD and played through every song when I got a real moment to myself upon hearing the news. But, I’ve always said it’s one of those pieces in Hip Hop history that’s a heavily underrated classic. Despite what may have stunted her career, what you can’t deny or fake is talent. And, talent is something she very much so had. The bars were there, the delivery and flow was there. She went in from start to finish on that album. It was unlike anything we heard at the time, which is what I think made it so great. You know what I mean? She was going harder than most dudes on those records, LOL! The album was basically a movie with the entertainment it provided. But, she’s still one of those names that deserves greater recognition off of her ability alone. Still 1000 times better than pretty much every popular female rapper today; a lot of male rappers even. So, you’ve gotta put some respect on the name, Bo$$, for what she was able to bring to the table as an MC. And, always remember to spell it with those dollar signs. This was a surprising loss to hear about. Because her music definitely brings back memories for me. She had the potential for so much more and could’ve been a real dominant force in the game. Imagining if she had a 3-5 album record deal to hold her solid. That would’ve catapulted her career and legacy into a whole different stratosphere. You did your thing, though, Lichelle. Rest In Power, Queen👑🙏🏾
@@startingnew2024 I respect it. She had all of the ability to hang with the best of them. She was no joke. With a greater body of work, I’m a full believer in that
She didn't try 2 hide it, she said it in her songs. " I'm trying 2 get 2 Watts but I'm stuc in Baldwin Hills, trying 2 find myself. We use 2 luv her regardless
Growing up in Detroit you gain a certain “street” edge by default. Some of the biggest hustlers out of Detroit went to private school & or college. You have to be a Detroiter to understand. She went to college at Oakland (County) University in Rochester Hills, Michigan. R.I.P. BIG Homie. Miss you already 💯💯💯
I remember first finding her cassette in my moms 2000 Chevy prizm when I got my license in 2015 “Livin Loc’d” with Sticky Fingaz is still to this DAY a certified BANGER *BORN GANGSTAZ* RIP 🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿
He definitely told the truth when he said rap SOFTEN DOWN and now anybody can do it. Boss was a hard chick. I was 17 when she DROPPED. Spitting like a champion. RIP my sister ❤🙏🏿💯
Ironically she was only doing what the boys were doing as well, faking a hard character. She was smart about covering her face all the time because when it fell apart who would really recognize her once she went back to the real world..
R.I.P 👑 Boss ❤️💖💜🌷🌹💐 Original Ladie Gangster , the “D” own….. Gone but won’t ever be forgotten… “Don’t Ring The Alarm” and “Deeper” was my 2 favorites…..
I remember hearing her first single when it first came out. She was spittin’ so hard I thought she was a dude. There’s no denying her talent. Definitely ahead of her time, R.I.P. Queen BO$$
I remember listening to her first and only album! It was hard AF imo. She reminds me of Onyx because she spits nothing but hardcore lyrics. After watching this update I now remember the actual reason why she hasn't made anything musically from time to time, she had kidney issues. With the health issue I'm surprised she even made it this far in her life. What a turbulent life she lived. May she rip🙏!
That's my Era, and we in the City of Detroit had love for her, and we ALWAYS did. We knew she wasn't a "Gangsta", but she (like many Rappers) had the right people around her, to keep her good, when she was out and about. A Detroit Legend, and deservedly so. Her Flow was tight and she represented the City right. Rest easy BOSS, we know that you deserve more credit than you actually get.
Why do I keep seeing people say she was the first lady signed to Def Jam? Nikki D was the first lady signed to Def Jam. With that said, Bo$$ was dope. I played the hell out of that Born Gangstaz album.
MC Serch was working at Def Jam at the time and he said Bo$$ was the first that got signed. It took awhile for her to come out, but she was the first to get signed according to him.
Yes Nikki d was the first female rapper on def jam back in 1990 or 1991way before boss she came out 1993 but first female gangsta rapper in the mid 90s
She was dope but shewasn’t the first female gangster rapper….You forgetting about Mia X she came out in 92-93….Sonya C (Master P ex wife) Married To The Mob came out in 1993 Marvaless (C-Bo) was rapping in 1992 Lady Of Rage was on the Chronic album in 1992 even Roxanne Shante had some gangster stuff in some of her music….Infinity was on UGK album Too Hard To Swallow that came out in 1992 it’s a few that came out before and around the same time as BO$$
@@THESUPERDOOLEYyou absolutely right on that because at the time in 93 I heard about boss on TV and radio she had more pull than the rest at the time
I saw BO$$ in concert back in September of '93 at The Rochester War Memorial. She opened the show, followed by Run DMC, and then Onyx, and finally Snoop, Dre & The Whole Death Row Posse. It was the first rap concert I had ever gone to, which made it all the more special. She will be missed. 😢
People are slow or here what they want to here. She didn't fake any. On her first album, the skit of her mother says she came up in a good house hold and went to good schools
*Eastside Low Bottoms sh*t !* _Tappin' in from South Central LA_ Salute and RIP to Bo$$. Wasn't aware that she'd released an entire album so I'll have to look into that. I still bump "Deeper" in my lowrider to this day tho.
Boss was a dope artist. She got exposed and her authenticity was in question. That was big back then. I had the cassette tape and have her album in my phone right now.
She was NOT the first female MC signed to Def Jam!!!!!!!! Why do ppl keep saying that??? It was Nikki D in 1989..SHE was the first female MC signed to Def Jam... RIP Boss
Also, I remember Def Jam signing and having veteran artists try to do a gangster image to sell more records: Bo$$, ONYX, and LL’s 14 Shots to the Dome album.
R.i.P. Bo$$, her only album went hard back in the day. Unfortunately, she got exposed for a fake past that hurt her Chances to be one of the great female artists like a Lil Kim, Foxy Brown, Queen Lafaith, Movie Love, and MC Lyfe!
She wasn't exposed, she even had an intro to her album that had her mother chastizing her on her voicemail, the industry is funny, that's some fuck shit that she didnt blow up
Then can you imagine. Having to hide the fact you had good up bringing as child. Let that sink in she had to hide the fact she had people who lived and cared for her to fit in wow
Just completely glossed over the fact that this woman nurtured a VERY successful career in radio in D-Town and beyond... How do I know that? I'm from Dallas, and I grew up listening to her on one of the most popular Hip-hop and R&B stations in the metroplex. This made it sound like this woman descended into oblivion never to be seen again! 🤦🏾♀️ She discovered another avenue of success where music was at the forefront and presided over the jams that were the soundtrack to my youth! 🤨 Tha hell?!? Rest well to a legend. 🕊🕯💕 BOSS then. BOSS now. BOSS forever. 💯
I have the album on cd she blasted thru the 90's with mainstream flow and freestyle in rap..sadly her health takes a toll in life, she's a good woman who struggles so much in the rap industry..😮💨(rest in peace)🥀🥀🥀🥀
