Something that’s overlooked was in early 2017, the game where the Nats stole 7 bases. Montero’s remark about his slow delivery to the plate was dismissed too quickly. Montero was on a rapid decline as well, but Arrieta was being protected too much as a sacred cow and a Boras agent in a contract year.

@@famguy218 his skills were declining, but he knew a slow delivery to the plate when he saw it. But why let facts get in the way of a Boras client in pursuit of a big contract?

He really didn't declined that fast though, he was in his 30s when he went down hill. Baltimore wasted so much of his career it just seems like it was fast. Plus he had a delivery that made him susceptible to injury which probably shorten his time as a useful pitcher.

I mean he fell off slowly but it was pretty dramatic in terms of winning a Cy Young to being one of the worst pitchers in baseball in less then 4 years

I know this is six months old, but Jake officially announced his retirement today. That said, he did also say that he hasn't submitted the paperwork yet.

Jake was never a bad locker room presence, no way. He did have a short spike as a dominant pitcher, but in that short period of time he was the most dominant Cubs pitcher since Kerry Wood. He was flat out unhittable for around 2 years. We would’ve never won that ring without him. Not only that, if you caught up with him in Chicago, he would stop and talk with you. One of my favorite cubs of all time

Yes. People seemed to forget how dominant he was dominant in 2016 too. Yes, the cubs won the World Series but Jake was an all star and had a no hitter that year too.

Arrieta had four good years, all with cubs. 751 innings with a 2.67 ERA.

He was starting to show signs of slowing down in 2016. When he said his “aces get 7 years” comment for a new contract he started to decline. I think it was his delivery that eventually caught up to him and couldn’t work well anymore

His antivax stance broke his stoic routine. You can't have a fact based workout routine and play stupid with your immune system. That split in reason can break you.
