What happened to this old railway building at Purley Oaks Station, near Croydon, Greater London?
I took these photos in the winter of 1999/2000 and have come back to see what has happened. I was hoping that the building had been restored….

Purley Oaks is in Greater London, located between Croydon and Purley. Like much of Greater London it grew significantly in the 20th century.
Coming back to the photos when I took this photo in the winter of 1999 / 2000 I could not believe what poor state the buildings and platform were in! This was a railway station that was in everyday use.

Never seen photos of the actual building before. I lived in the area around 2005 and it was long gone by then

A photo of it in its heyday would have been interesting. I used to often catch the train from Purley Oaks but I don't really recall the building, maybe because it was so run down and I was running to catch the train!

Up until 1983 all four platforms were in regular use, with the ticket office being in the old main station building. The building arrangement was very similar to that still in use at Purley station a mile further south. With platforms 1 and 2 only being used these days on very occasional weekends (usually Sundays), when engineering works closes platforms 3 and 4, there was no real need for the badly damaged buildings after the fire and they were demolished. Platforms 1 and 2 are not usually available for public use as only fast trains pass through them (this is why platform 2 is fenced off, with gates being available for use if required). A new ticket office facility was opened at the top of the steps that lead up from the passage (through the big doors) at the top of platform 3. The signage in the black and white photo, with the three 'flashes' at the bottom was the old 'Network SouthEast' signage.
