SAAB was given budgets by GM to develop new cars but choose to greatly exceed them. The VW Group uses common parts to save development costs yet each division makes its cars distinctive. SAAB could have done the same thing with OPEL/GM parts and actually built cars that sold for a profit.

G Iove AGREED! However, GM’s problems started long before this! As a retired mechanic who worked at GM dealerships I can tell you horror stories that would make your hair stand on end! If you get the chance Google the article “The Vega ; The car that nearly destroyed General Motors.”

@@williamegler8771 GM wanted Saab to share components with fucking Opel. If you knew the first thing about 90's Opels, you would've know that their cars were absolute trash. I don't know whose brain fart it was to buy a brand, state you want it to compete with BMW and Mercedes, then hand them the worst platforms available on the whole damned continent. Saab were working on their own scalable platform for both the 900 and 9000. They could've given the OG 900 a face lift and then released a vastly superior car in 1996. GM instead gave them a ludicrous deadline to take Opels crap platform and make something out of it. Saab had a 4WD prototype in the late 80's, but GM didn't allow them to go 4WD until 2005! They wanted to give the 9000 a V8 to make it sell in the US. GM were at first all for it, then realized that that would've been a better car than what Cadillac offered at the time, so the project was halted. GM never understood the Saab brand, they never understood the brands buyer base and they skimped out on every corner. GM developed a small sports car, perfect for a sporty and youthful brand like Saab... and handed it to old-fart brand Opel. It didn't sell. They developed another. And then let history repeat itself.

Well GM needs to bring back Pontiac and Saturn and Oldsmobile.

They had so many UNNECESSARY brands They are draining their resources trying to flood the market with the same fucking car across 8 brands so saab couldn't get a crumb off the table , Pontiac can't promise it was somewhat a youthful brand if anything that's what the sabs should've shared platforms with... gm always leads the race and quits at the finish line, The Pontiac Aztec would've been in ICON today if they had stuck with the concept design but not only did they not keep that design they WENT FAR AWAY from it original design

My 2006 9-3 is still going strong at 215,000 miles. Hope to see it hit 250K in a few years.

My 2001 9-5 Aero is at 230,000 km, and going well. I've replaced a lot of the rubber bushes and hoses, everyone should fit silicone hoses.

@@Jester123ish Nice, but barely run in! That was MILES on mine, now 216K, so 344,000 km. Think it still has the battery that came from the factory! ;-)

I have a 2006 93 Aero. Love it. It has 75,000 miles. Hope to keep it for at least 5 more years.

David Miletič the new 900 is the same car as the first 9-3. It was just an face lift and they changed name.

Saab was shit even before GM got hands on it. That's why they went bankrupt just like Volvo.

If they were so good why people didn't buy them? Volvo had to sell the company to Ford and Saab to GM.

@@C20F 'Every Swede" is still not that much. More people live in North Carolina than in Sweden. Also, even if the cars are good, that still doesn't mean that a brand can't attract new customers or have existing ones upgrade to newer or better ones. Toyotas are kept for long, and yet the company is doing well.

+C14z Are you homeschooled or something? Volvo and SAAB sold their cars in the US even before GM and Ford bought them.

MrCorvusC yes, if Volkswagen has bought Saab, that would’ve been great idea and they would have still been around today, possibly marketed in between VW and Audi. I believe the Audi A4/Passat B5 will have made a better 900 NG than the Opel Vectra/Vauxhall Cavalier. And Volkswagen then acquired Scania so it would’ve been a much better, more interesting ending. In short, Scania is thriving under Volkswagen and GM just ruined and shut Saab down

@@GrimeGamer360 Also, two huge companies were pretty much revived by VW. Bugatti was bankrupt, and Lamborghini was very nearly - going from one owner to another more often than a stripper on a stag night. Bentley wasn't doing that well either. Now they do.

Y'all have probably heard that story about the visit from the GM rep, who on a test drive notices that the satnav isn't the same one as on the base model they gave 'em. And the Saab mgr replies something to the effect that, "it wasn't up to our standards, so we developed an all-new one... at a cost of over $5 million!"

Excellent : even if Skoda Octavia is a variant of the Volkswagen Golf, customers certainly don't lose out in terms of value for money - bad strategy on the part of General Motors!.

In my opinion ford didn't really ruin Volvo I think it's geelee really as they have quite literally destroyed the brand's recognition for bullet proof reliability. I own a ford era Volvo S80 from 2011 and it's still trotting along the road perfectly at 263,000 miles.

muntasir mahmood When I say they ruin Volvo I'm not talking about reliability, it's just they failed to take a vantage of growing that brand and starved of them of resources They pretty much drained Volvo Because they bought a Volvo and pretty much did it just to use their platform, which is what they did with Aston Martin and pretty much modified that DB9 chassis and used it on the fusion Pretty much treated Volvo like a car they were stripping for parts

We have GM Saabs but I feel that the quality is still great. We've had 25 (I think) Saabs. We currently have 7 9-3 Aero sedans, 1 9-3 Aero Combi, 1 9-3 ARC Vert, 1 9-3 ARC sedan, and 2 NG 9-5 Aeros. We try to save as many Saabs as possible. All these are personal cars besides the ARC sedan. That's a car we bought to save. We have an addiction 🤣

I used to have an 84 Saab 900 turbo, pretty much had to fix something every weekend, the fundamental engine was bullet proof but everything else was just too old I guess. Subsequent Saabs I've owned have been good.

We added an 07 9-5 Aero last weekend 😀😂 Our garage and driveway are getting full 😂

I daily drive my '89 900i 4 door manual that my parents bought new. It's gone from being (in other's eyes) a posh car, a nice car, an old car.... a collectable car, a "wow your car is cool!" car. It's the same reliable, beautiful to drive car (which I will never sell).

@@fringe2804 Saab Automobile is now NEVS National Electric Vehicles Sweeden. Uses the old Saab factories, designers, staffing to some extent and Saab was planning an electric 9-3 anyway (odd that now every car company wants EVs and GM sacked off Saab as they were secretly making concept 9-3 EVs)

Marc, I have a 1988 900 SPG and it is a Hell of A Fun Car to drive. I do have a bit of a problem with maintaining healthy 5 sp gearboxes though with all those ponies under the hood. It is a Saab Story.

Isuzu is still alive with their dmax and mux and suzuki is still alive in other countries
