Elon Musk unveiled prototypes of Tesla's Solar Roof tiles In October 2016. They came in four styles that looked just like normal roofing material but were essentially miniaturized versions of traditional solar panels.
The announcement helped Tesla justify its $2.6 billion acquisition of SolarCity one month later and represented Musk's vision for what the businesses could do together.
It's been almost two years since then. So where are the tiles?
"We now have several hundred homes with the Solar Roof on them, and that's going well. It takes a while to just confirm that the Solar Roof is going to last for 30 years and all the details work out," Musk said on Tesla's Q2 earnings call in August.» Subscribe to CNBC: cnb.cx/SubscribeCNBC

Not to worry the majority of Americans can't afford to buy a house of any kind, they are left with buying a trailer or moving into a outrageously price apartment in that way the rich will become even richer and the rest? Oh well there is always the street or under the bridge, welcome to the 1% world that live in the USA as for Musk he is pure genius and is one of the few that will test, test and test till he knows for sure that his product will last many trouble free years.

He said his bill went for from $400 to $40/m in the summer. If we cut it in half for the rest of the year over 30 years that's a saving of roughly $86,000. So in reality it costs you about a $14,000 premium to go solar and look good while doing so. That's pretty reasonable for brand new tech bound to get cheaper. The real seller for this should be weather or not they can build a failsafe into the power delivery that automatically cuts off the incoming channel of the grid if it senses a power surge. Sort of like a power surge protector. If Tesla can do that, then you would theoretically be protected from an emp surge and by having a closed loop system you would be the only house on the block with power even after an EMP blast...that's pretty big in my opinion. Our national wide electrical grid is designed in such a stupid way that one EMP on one side of the country will wipe out all power and appliances across the nation. Plus you have the added the bonus of reducing your carbon footprint! :)

+Parth Patel Solar roofs are inefficient as the variable angle of different roofs alter the potential power. Just going from a 10 degree roof pitch angle to a 30 degree roof pitch angle is a 6% difference in potential power. While that may not seem like much you must also factor in solar roofing tiles thermally bridges heat toward the house. Where a railed PV system attached to the roof can alter the angle and have an air gap minimizing thermal bridging while giving cooling capability to the backside of the solar cells.

"400 to 40" ... lets say 250/month savings = 3k/yr * 30 = 90k. Id say where he lives he'd probably pay 25k to 35k for a shingle roof. Im going to give the lifespan advantage to Tesla @ 35 years, so 0 - 100 + 3 * 35 = 5. This is assuming that Musk will push for quality. Whereas out 30k and shorter lifespan ( I'm assuming). Now, where I live, he's right, it be hard for it to ever pay for itself. There are alot of caveats one could consider and change the way you look at it. So yes, it should, at least break even for this guy. You could argue, that he actually made 30k off his 100k investment. Just dont know if a 1% return is that great. But also, tax incentives, can he make a 50 year tile? resale maybe?, caveats. Id like to also say that these may look awful. What i mean is how it actually looks in person. Never judge by a picture or video.

DIY your own 2080 GPU using transistors and wire. It will take 18.6 billion transistors, a few billion miles of wire, and a few terra watts of electricity. Should be doable for under just under 1 trillion, only take a few thousand years to assemble, and only cost a few billion a year to run. How many thousands of miles of wire on that 2080 chip? Do you even know what a transistor is? The bigger the chip, the less you get from manufacturing defects on the die. Those same cards sell for $6,000 for workstations, and Dell sells Nvidia server cards for $18,560 each. The reality is that Microsoft is writing their API's for AMD and changing them invalidating architectures that Nvidia spent billions to develop, yet the API's still work on 2012 AMD GPUs. Civil conspiracy between AMD and Microsoft is adding a lot to the cost of Nvidia GPU's in the form of wasted R&D to pay off. The Vulcan API supports RTX, but not DirectX. Still waiting on Microsoft to release DXR, and hoping they don't change it again to break compatibility with 2000 series cards, like they did with Volta.

That's ~360-410 in savings a month. 100,000/360=~278 months to pay for itself OR just over 23 years. It might not be the number/time frame the guy was looking for, but surely it isn't outside his realm of understanding to see that if his own numbers hold true, it will ABSOLUTELY pay for itself...

@salia2897
@salia2897 5 лет назад
You also have to consider that you can invest these 100k. He has these 100k now, but the electrical bills have only to be payed in the future. So you have to consider what an average investment would bring you over 23 years. Also, this is what he safes in summer, not in winter. So he might safe much less. Also, the efficiency of these tiles probably goes down after a while. And it is not clear that energy costs will go up in the futur, especially not all energy cost. When a large fraction of electrical power comes from renewable energy, it might actually be quite cheap when conditions are good.

He's in California, so seasonal solar energy variability is relatively minimal. That said, your point about the opportunity cost of investing that $100k over 23 years is spot on. Taking the lower bound of today's Fed interest rate of 2%, compounded annually, with the initial deposit of $100k and no further deposits-essentially the most favorable set of comparables for the solar roof investment, because it's super-easy to get better interest rates than that!-after 23 years it's grown to $157,689.93. For a small house, one solar panel with a sink roof can give power (not including the stove) for quite a few days. It turns out that sink roofs keep the heat for longer than tiled roofs. In our neigborhood some people with tiled roofs have a solar panel too. The Eskom load-shedding which led to more frequent power cuts lead us to compare our solar power with other people's solar power in our neighborhood.

@brainmind4070
@brainmind4070 5 лет назад
Eugene S Why should it have to be any tougher than regular solar panels? I think it's the aesthetic considerations that will make it less efficient. Texturing and coloring the protective coating scatters and absorbs light.
@eugenes9751
@eugenes9751 5 лет назад
@@brainmind4070 because solar panels are wired in series. If a single shingle gets cracked, it'll cause something like a 90% efficiency loss in that line because the broken panel becomes a resistor. Large panels are much better at reducing this issue. Remember, these are glass, not tile. How many times have you seen a home with a glass tile roof? Tile cracks, glass shatters.
@brainmind4070
@brainmind4070 5 лет назад
Eugene S Yeah, but even "large panels" have cells that are wired together, kind of like tiles on a roof. I don't see how this issue is more easily mitigated in "large panels". If you care to explain, I'm not an electrical engineer, but I took a couple EE classes in college, so I basically understand the terminology. It seems to me any solar panel on top of a residential building would have to be equally tough.
@eugenes9751
@eugenes9751 5 лет назад
+Brain Mind, yes, i agree, they have to be equally tough. Solar city is made of glass, typical panels use polycarbonate covers. When a solar panel goes out, you replace it, relatively easy, to replace individual tiles requires digging up every tile above it, much harder. Since you're an engineer, this is effectively the same as an LED panel going out, when a single diode goes out, it causes the entire series to use more power, which eventually leads to a cascade failure because the other lines use more current, which then causes the parallel series to use more power, and eventually everything fails relatively quickly. So the main point is that panels use plastic covers instead of glass, and these tiles use glass (which shatters)....

Do the math based on the guys bills, he would have to be saving well over 100 years to get his investment back. Also solar degrades over time, so they will less efficient in 10 years than they are now.

@@asambi69 Did you listen to the guy? He said his electric bill was 400/month, now 40/month. $360/month savings over 30 years is $129,600. Meaning the product pays for itself well before the 30 replacement time.

Why do they have to be so small? Why does it have to mimic traditional shingles at all? Why not make the whole roof glass or the panels much larger to avoid miniaturization costs?
@friedduc
@friedduc 5 лет назад
I'm not an experienced house builder so take this with a grain of salt. My guess is that if a shingle or tile is damaged you'd only have to get a small part replaced/repaired which would be a small fraction of getting your entire roof replaced. If the whole thing had to be replaced, you wouldn't have a roof while they change it out and you have to replace them every 20 years or so.

@ge99ne

They are mimicking traditional shingles because there is a significant contingent that will not install due to the appearance. There are HOAs that try to restrict installation based on appearance.

@TheMostNinjaMike

Less. Much less. And you have to pay for all the areas of the roof that can't generate electricity too. Also more electrically dangerous and won't take advantage of developments in module label electronics. The roof tiles are basically old crappy solar tech shrunk down and made to look great.

Tesla took over my contract with Solar City and have refused to correct an initial design/installation error after months of good faith efforts on my part to get agreement and getting permit from the city to move panels rather than their providing more. They told me they would move panels to south Facing roof, now demand $6000 to do so. This is about 10 panels per their study. Sleazy!!
