Loved watching Kansas in that 2007 and 2008 season. I know Mangino got hate because of yelling stuff at the players, and it was the same thing with Leach at Texas Tech with the closet thing. Ever since both of these guys were let go, those schools have never been the same and have never come close to what they accomplished there. Pre Alabama dynasty was so fun because so many teams were in the hunt.

As a Kentucky fan I despise Kansas in everything, but the fact that Mark Mangino took them from 2-10 and 1-11 seasons to not only average, but to a New Years Six bowl victory over V-Tech is one of the most commendable things I can think of. It’s such a shame that his time at Kansas was cut short because the man seemed to know what he was doing.

He was fired because of multiple complaints by players and their parents about his verbal and physical (not sexual) abuse of players. That is not how Kansas treats players.

2007 and 2008 were some of the funnest years in college football. 2007 it was something like 5-7 weeks in a row the #2 team lost. There were so many teams that a fresh faced CFB fan (let's say 15 years and younger) wouldn't believe was top 5 at one point or another that year. I'm talking teamz Boston College, South Florida, Kansas, California, Mizzu, West Virginia. Some of these teams are trash at best, some are mediocre at best over the last 5 years. The great part about it was that so many teams were in the mix. This was notable teams in BCS poll in 2007 and 2008 2007 11-2 Virginia Tech 12-2 Missouri 11-2 USC 12-1 Kansas 11-2 West Virginia 12-1 Hawaii 11-3 Boston College 11-2 BYU 9-4 Illinois Now how many times have any of these teams reached this record again? Of those, many of them have done it more than once since then? Again, notables in 2008 that 15 and unders probably wouldn't think would be here, minus the ones I mentioned in 2007 2008 12-1 Texas 11-2 TCU 12-1 Boise St 11-2 Texas Tech 9-4 Oregon St 9-4 Georgia Tech Now tell me how many of those have reached that record since then, and how many of those that did have done it more than once? I'm getting so nostalgic just thinking about it.

Scott I genuinely appreciate you putting this video together for us KU supporters. Like many KU football fans, I have endured the last decade of bad football and with the recent hiring of the new AD Travis Goff from Northwestern and the new Head Football Coach Lance Liepold, we are all hoping for a new an exciting era. Your reporting on the subject was fair (kudos to you, a Mizzou fan, for not taking cheap shots but instead stating the facts) and attempting to tell the true story of what happened to Mark Mangino. For my money, he was the best football coach in the history of the University of Kansas and there have been some pretty good ones. One thing I will state on KU's behalf when it comes to the football history of the school, (you mentioned that it has never been good),was that they have had some good teams over the decades. Starting with the 1940's and the Ray Evans-led Jayhawks who won regularly during the post-war years. Then during the mid-1960's, the Jayhawks had teams that featured All Americans like John Hadl, Gayle Sayers and Bobby Douglas. The 1967-Orange Bowl team featured John and Junior Riggins who lost a heartbreaker to Penn State on a too many men on the field call during a goal line stand. The mid-1970's team with Nolan Cromwell QB-ing the Bud Moore led wishbone offense was dominating the Big-8 until Cromwell suffered a season-ending knee injury during the Oklahoma game at KU off of a cheap-shot hit out of bounds by an Oklahoma D-back named Anderson. The 1980's teams coached by Don Famborough had a decent amount of success, but couldn't beat Nebraska and Oklahoma. The 1990's teams coached by Glenn Mason won several bowl games. True they've had their struggles, and haven't even been mediocre at times, but they've also had times where they've prospered. The mistake that cost Mangino his job at KU was a thoughtless comment he made out of frustration about one of his players who had routinely disappointed him. The comment was unacceptable to the KU Administration and no opportunity for an apology or retraction was given to him as they (KU Administration) was looking for a reason to get rid of Mangino. Sadly, NONE of those same administrators are working at KU now. Mangino was the best coach in KU history and I am grateful for what he did for the football program. Thank you Coach M!

Would love to see a what happened to by position and draft class. As an example, the 2016 draft class of WR's as a whole has been largely a bust outside of Michael Thomas, Tyler Boyd, Sterling Shepard and the oft injured Will Fuller. The RB's have had a lot more success. Also that year the QB class was mediocre at best. A few decent backups but Goff and Wentz have sort of hit their crossroads.

Small problem. They didn't beat Mizzou in 2009 by a last second field goal. They scored a touchdown with 27 seconds left on 4th and 7, 26 yard pass, Reesing to Meyer, and then an extra point to go up by 3 points. Mizzou had a last second field goal attempt to try and tie, but it was either partially blocked or the kicker just didn't kick it well and he came up short on 54 yard attempt. It was a great game.
@JABurtin
@JABurtin 3 года назад
Still pissed they fired him for some pretty fuckin' weak accusations. The 7 game skid was due to losing a shitload of talent to the NFL that could not immediately be replaced. The '07 defensive backfield included Aqib Talib and Chris Harris Jr as cornerbacks that would later pair up again to win a Super Bowl with the Broncos. Safety Darrel Stuckey had a great career with San Diego, and though his counterpart FS Justin Thornton didn't get a shot in the NFL, he actually matched Talib in interceptions through most of the year. Also, my favorite player to watch in '07 was LT Anthony Collins. An absolute beast that could take out 2 guys every time we ran the ball to his side. He had a high ankle sprain for the Missouri game, and it may very well have been the difference. Reesing still had the offensive talent, but the young defense on the field his senior year wasn't doing him any favors. Mangino ultimately would have reloaded the roster, but as 2007 was a surprise to everyone there wasn't an immediate stable of similar talent to plug into many key positions. Since then, the university has been plenty willing to pony up the cash to be a good program, but the decision makers don't know football and keep betting on the wrong horse. I do think that Les Miles finally righted the ship from a long standing scholarship issue involving taking too many juco players each year. By taking no juco players in his second class it left him with an extremely young team for his second year, but it was an investment for future wins that the administration was willing to suffer through. Though the scandal from his LSU days got him fired, that investment is still in place to make Lance Leipold look like a miracle worker. Leipold has 6 players following him over from a great Buffalo squad, and a seventh recruit that switched his commitment to Kansas. Adding those guys into a great class that Miles pulled in should finally give them the solid foundation for getting back to playing good football. Believe it or not, I'm finally looking forward to watching Kansas football again.

It was rumored that Mangino and Bill Self DID NOT get along behind the scenes. In interviews and in the public square they showed support for each other, but they butted heads a lot because of athletic spending. Mangino thought the KU athletic department spent too much on basketball relative to the football program he was trying to build. Meanwhile, Bill Self being someone who doesn't like sharing the spotlight, wasn't very enthused when the Hawks won that Orange Bowl, so what did Self respond with? Well, he won the damn NATTY for basketball. Then magically, two years later, Mangino is FIRED, and KU football is literally in the seventh layer of CFB Hell. KU also hasn't won a basketball natty since.

He was a great coach and guy. The disrespect toward this man is unnerving.

I think Athletic Directors feared he might keel over and die on the sidelines, just like umpire John McSherry did in baseball. Hard to sell parents and players on physical fitness when the guy looks like a sumo wrestler. They may not have said it to his face but I'm sure the ADs had this thought.

Kansas actually had a good/great team in 1968, Losing to OU by 4 and the Orange bowl by 1. I think they ended up ranked about 6-7th. Then they had very little success until Mangino. I think they had zero idea how to handle success, and all of a sudden the heads got big and they felt like they deserved to be a top tier team no matter what. If they’d kept Mangino no telling how long they’d have had success, and success at KU in football is not being a perineal top 10 team. It’s less. You should expect less. They all of a sudden expected more and I think Mangino performed a miracle in raising the dead. His reward was to be canned. So to speak.

They fired him because Jayhawks are a bunch of snobs and they didn't like the image he was portraying... and they haven't been worth a damn since ... but on the other hand it was just 2 seasons and when they fired him his record was still 2 games under 500 and once teams figured out the newly gimmick offense Todd Reesings 3rd season wasn't worth a s**t either.. mostly due to having to play OU and Texas and several more losses
