Wow. All content, no padding! And on a great topic. The reason that big pieces like the full-scale Jupiter 2 get trashed is not only because of the cost of storing them, but also hefty taxes that have to be paid on them. In the 1960s, the Sacramento Satraps realized that they could squeeze money out of the studios for their sets and dressing by calling them capital property. MGM in particular had a big stable of period vehicles, having been buying them since the 1910s . . .so they sold nearly everything that wasn't being used in a production at the time, including nearly all of their military vehicles -- which were then leased back when needed. It was a joke in the industry that the new rules had resulted in the destruction of more sets than filming the burning of Atlanta scene in "Gone With the Wind" . . . Paramount (which had inherited Desilu's assets) donated the Star Trek shuttlecraft to the PBS station in LA, which then sold it in one of their auctions. The guy who bought it told me that he paid more to transport it than to buy it, but unfortunately it was damaged by weather . . .eventually to be restored and placed on display a few years ago. Paramount had assessed the value highly, for the tax deduction. Other sets (one that comes to mind is the computer room from "Alien") were donated to non-profits, but most have just been dismantled, repurposed of simply disposed of.

my compliments on your commentary. This is exactly the sort of thing everyone should hear a lot more about concerning any movie or TV show or even an historical project. Taxes and hidden taxes and costs and deductions are all vital information and it answers a lot of questions like you just dead. I run into so much ignorance about this among beginners who want to get into the video or film business and they miss the big word, business. Permits, taxes, deductions all vital to understand. It is sad that the great studios had to get rid of such valuable things and having worked in movies and TV shows here in Texas we are still feeling the pain. no more big historical period dramas if you have to travel across the country to film on a location when you could've done it in your own backyard and everybody go home at 5 o'clock.

The MGM backlot at Jefferson and Overland (Culver City) was huge - prior to the auction(s). After clearing the lot, the property was turned into a residential complex.. The forward fuselage section of the B-25 "Ruptured Duck" (Thirty Seconds over Tokyo) was visible whenever the studio street gates were opened. Desilu's backlot was also located in Culver City.

I didn’t think the “Time Machine” segment could be surpassed for fascinating enlightenment on the history of a sci fi prop, but this video does just that! Incredible story about an ultra rare 10’ Jupiter 2 model-wouldn’t it have been great to witness it in “There Were Giants in the Earth”? But then, even an inept Cyclopean couldn’t possibly miss the spaceship with a boulder like it did repeatedly with the chariot (?)

I watched Lost in Space every day after school. I remember telling my aunt one time that: I was going to be on Lost is Space. I was convinced. I told her to watch that with in a couple to a few weeks that I would be on Lost in Space as Will's friend... Never happened, of course. But I have always wanted a full-size version of the robot. I still do!!! Maybe I still will have one if I could find either one already built and fully working OR a full parts kit and put it together myself at 66+ yrs now. I know "The B-9 Club" - I could never get a response when I tried to contact them. Anyway, I only started off with this comment to tell about my telling my aunt that I was going to be on the show in a few weeks... and that's all I got to say about all that.

I’m OG LiS. I remember the excitement for the premier, and how that robot scared the crap out of me premier night. Like close my eyes scared. Anyway, on one of our family trips from SF to LA around 1969ish around the area where there used to be tons of oil rigs, I saw the full size Jupiter 2 sitting flush to the ground surrounded by a bunch of portable buildings. It was and IIRC a radar dish where the dome used to be. 🤷‍♂️ no idea if it was for TV or a movie, but I saw it and it was in view for easily a minute. I was super excited.

I love Saturdays because that’s when your new videos get released. I love the timeless design of the Jupiter 2. When they made the movie in 1998 and the Netflix series I really wanted them to keep the original design, with a few modern twists. It’s good to know some of the models are still out there. Thanks again for keeping those memories alive.

One thing that always made me go "huh?" as a kid was there were about 6 different laser gun props used through the run of Lost in Space. My favorite TV Series as a kid growing up in the 60's. I remember being so mad when they cancelled one weeks episode.I managed to find the TV stations phone number, call it, talk to the program director and yell at him. My parents then yelled at me , when they got the long distance telephone bill. Excellent show I enjoyed your comments film clips and history so much!! A few questions for your upcoming interior sets. What is that room on the top deck to the left of the elevator that people so often go into and come out of? I own every single tape of the Show and have NEVER seen whats inside. I have speculated that where the chariot is? What are fans thoughts? Heres another one. on the lower deck there are shown Dr. Smiths cabin, Wills cabin, Pennys cabin and Prof and Mrs. Cabin. Where are Don and Judy? I have seen one show somewhere , dont ask me where which show the top of the astrogater rising up on a pole so it fits inside the top bubble on the outside of the ship. I know thats not in the Series, but was this something done and perhaps never shot? I know the interior just doesn't match what its suppose to contain, just physically impossible.

When I was a kid back then, I made a Jupiter 2 from a pair of large, deep, (restaurant take-out size) paper plates stapled together (this was before the invention of Styrofoam clamshells). I cut the viewing window into it and taped a peanut butter jar lid on the bottom for the fusion engine. I attached a couple of fishing lines to the top with a stick for a handle so I could puppeteer it flying and crashing (a lot). Had lots of fun and it cost nothing to make. To be a kid again . . .

@@MoviesMusicMonsters As far as I know, that size paper plate is no longer available. And, as an adult now, my imagination will never be as good as when I was a kid. Now, it would not look like the Jupiter 2, but only two paper plates stapled together.

Agreed, the interior was much larger than the outside was made to be. But part of the magic was the ceiling and two walls were not there, and added to the extra space feel. Had they included the ceiling at least, it would have made the feel much smaller.

I would say the old props were reused simply because there was no CGI or 3D printing to make cheap replicas. Reusing saved a ton of money and until modern videos, much of these efforts were unknown by the general public.

Dan, I have some more ideas of Sci-fi TV series you can talk about. First there is the classic Smallville TV series which ran for nearly a decade with ten seasons. Then there is "Grimm" with six seasons. It had a lot of exciting episodes of the Grimm detective and his partner investigating the crimes perpetrated by the Wesen and had to deal with secret organizations. Both Smallville and Grimm weren't suddenly cancelled and had closure to the series at the end. I have Grimm on a boxed set on DVD, and recently watched the whole series again on the CW which is free to watch. Now I'm currently watching "The Gifted" once again about people that have the X-gene giving them superpowers of some kind but hunted and persecuted by the government. It's also on the CW for free. Please keep adding more of your TV and movie analysis videos. Thanks, and I'm glad I found your interesting channel and had subscribed.

What a brilliant channel. Thoroughly fascinating. Thanks, Dan for answering the question about the fate of the full scale mock-up of the Jupiter 2. Sad.

Excellent video !! Being serious sci-fi or thrash, I love Lost in Space. It is part of my childhood and teenage (until nowadays). I have models of the B-9 Robot, the cyclop and the Jupiter 2 (and Robby Robot, too). It is a pity that some of the original itens of the series are lost (somewhere "in space"). Thank you for your videos !

As a kid, I dreamed about flying the Jupiter 2, anywhere I wanted to go; as an adult, I still do...when I just need to get away from all the craziness on Earth.

Jupiter 2 was a neat ship. But, like most programs like this, it was always much bigger on the inside than what would be possible from what you see from the outside and it carried a lot more stuff that they used than could be possible for it to carry.

I figured that out even as a kid. How'd they get all that stuff they had out of that little ship. The chariot alone was half the size of the ship. Even in pieces it would never fit.

What a flaming shame that someone didn't have the foresight to salvage the full size mock up. What a great museum piece it would be.
