What Happened to the Milky Way?

Can you see the stars at night? Only a few centuries ago, the Milky Way was visible from almost anywhere in America. Today, more than 99 percent of the population in the continental U.S. live in light-polluted areas. It's impossible to see the Milky Way in more than two-thirds of the country.
While it's unclear exactly how this change affects our culture and health, scientists are beginning to take notice of the disappearing night sky. The International Dark Sky Association works to reverse light pollution by studying the ways we light our streets and cities. Major metropolitan areas in Los Angeles and New York City are already transitioning to LEDs, which have the potential to greatly reduce the amount of light pollution in the sky. Maybe, just maybe, there's hope for our stars.

They should do a holiday where everybody turns their lights off and everybody gets to see the stars.

The holiday is called earth-hour. If you ever heard about it. WWF does it every year.

@@patriciaalfiona7542 That's not a holiday, that's an hour. People have pancake for the entire day, but an hour to turn off light.

And turning off lights is nowhere near an effective way to solve this problem. It's a great way to raise awareness, but after that day the lights are still back on again. We dont need PEOPLE to turn their lights off. We need large cooperation and facilities with bright lights shining in all directions to change their bulbs.

When i was a kid my parents and me went up to Eagle River, Wisconsin. I saw the Milky Way when I was a kid! It was so beautiful! It's more beautiful than a lunar eclipse or a shooting star. But 20 years later...I go up to Eagle River now...can't see it anymore :(

I moved from London to a tiny farm in the south of France ten yeas ago and until we moved here I had never seen the Milky Way but now I see it regularly ,,by complete coincidence the area I live in is the darkest 20 square kilometres in France ,,it is such a beautiful site for an old Londoner like me

This explains a lot. A couple of months ago, the power went out in my entire town. I went outside to put my phone to charge in the car and I noticed the sky was extremely starry. I have never seen anything like it and it was amazing seeing something like that for the first time.

Or the entire US’s. I need to see the Milky Way in New Jersey. One of my greatest dreams is that all the sudden, a blackout occurs in both NYC and Philadelphia, and my night sky instantly becomes phenomenal.

All of North America needs to go dark. Where I live now, it don't matter where I go, I won't see the Milky Way. Too many settlements everywhere, shooting Batman lights into space...

We need a redesign of street lights that shines a majority of it's light downwards in a cone shape. We do not need the light escaping upwards and outwards to cause light pollution.

the worst thing is that im unlucky! almost every day for me there is no clouds at all i mean some days i not see ANY cloud in the whole day! and in the night all the sky is filled with fucking clouds. also it upsets me that when the sky has no clouds i see airplanes everywhere! and why it upsets me is because how bad airplanes are for the earth :(

Easier said than done. This kind of time out would need to be pre-planned and arranged with airlines. People driving in cars must be warned beforehand, or else crazy accidents would follow. At least for now, I fear doing this is simply impossible.

Maybe more cities should work harder to prevent light pollution. I don't see many stars at night where I live and it's a shame not to have very starry skies.

As a photographer, I would love to have no light pollution for night sky photography. But seriously, to imply that the light we use in our everyday lives (you know, so we can see in the dark) is less important than seeing the stars at night is ridiculous. Personally, I appreciate the fact that we now have light where previously impossible. Fine, let's try to avoid using light that serves no purpose. I'm fine with that. But let's keep our priorities straight.

I went to the center of Portugal to take some photos at night of the Milky Way. Although I could see it well, it was a dark sky with no moon, but I still could see some things in front of e, without any lantern. And I think it's due to light pollution from nearby cities. Needless to say that the photos needed heavy retouch because until half of the sky all the sky was with a bright red glow from distant cities. I wish this becomes a trend and people start re-thinking the way they lit up the cities. Most of them have no idea of what they are missing just by looking up in the sky.

Over 30 years ago i used to enjoy the starry nightsky from the Alps, now I live in USA in a stupid nowhere town that is lit like a football stadium all night, all year. I'm lucky if I can see the pleiadi. So sad, so angry! >:C

i remember being on a trip with my family in Kosovo and we were returning back to Albania but we were late and night caught us. My dad told me that he needed to take a rest and we stopped at a restaurant which was 10 minutes form the highway that we were driving. The moment i got out of the car i was shocked at the amount of stars and brightens that was in the sky. The only thing i did was just stare at the sky. I was begging my dad stay more and we actually did. Never on my life i had seen so many stars before. That was almost 6 years ago and i really wanna go back and the view for one more time. Here in London you cant really see the milky way you can only see just about 20 stars. I just cant wait to see the view again and i will make sure i update you guys if you are interested.

Yes I have seen a flock of geese In the sky trying to land in the Evening and are confused by the Lights from the cities all around Then and they fly in a circle honking and confused. And my mother who would have been 97 said " I remember when There was nothing but darkness"

I took a long trip to see the eclipse. Finally getting out of the big city and driving through the dessert I got out the car to get a soda out of the truck. I instinctively looked up and there it was, a beautiful panorama of stars. The only draw back is its mighty scary when you can see only 20 to 30 feet all around you. I was having thoughts of aliens, Bigfoot, coyotes, lions tigers and bears coming out of the darkness to get me. Dark skies are cool but the darkness takes a little getting use to, especially for us city folks. Next time I am in darkness like that it will be with a group of people. Who knows what lurks in the night.

Yeah Im fairly far from the next big city, but not like in the country. Only like 25 miles. At night when there aren't any clouds you can see a lot, even more when you sit out for 30 minutes to adjust your eyes. I've never seen the milky way, but that's also because I only recently got into astronomy during fall/winter (when you can't see it), and only now will it start to be visible, which I have yet to bother to see it.

***** Yeah I've seen Jupiter, some nebulae, andromeda, and some other stuff I don't remember. I have a 6 inch telescope, a 3x barlow lens, and an eyepiece that can go from 24-8mm. It's pretty fun.

The only time I ever saw the Milky Way was last month in Mount Desert Island for the Acadia Night Sky festival. I didn't even get to go up Cadillac Mountain at night because of the crowd size, they had to close the entrance. Went back to the cabin and I sat by the ocean and just stared at the sky. I've never seen so many stars in my life, all concentrated in this curve in the sky. I could see the bulge that I saw in pictures, though not as bright. Such a lovely sight, my heart was so full.
