Mets fan living near and working in Philly for decades. I never have spent time listening to Philly sports talk or anything, but I went down that rabbit hole the other day, and boy was it a dark one. That said, having found this podcast and a couple others (Cherry Pinstripes, I think one was called), I gotta say that I appreciate that your analysis isn't swayed or skewed by your passion for the Phils. You're more reasoned and less emotionally-biased than the guys on TV (Barkann, Botalico, etc). Lots of respect, and thanks for the good wishes the Mets' way.

@snackcakeman

You use the word “outplayed”. Did they outplay them or did the Phillies “let down” due to having clinched the division. If you take away the carrot in front of the horse will it continue to run around the track? Baseball has a longer season than other sports, so keeping that mental edge is difficult. Lots of peaks and valleys. When Freddie Freeman’s son was ill, don’t you think it was still on his mind when he played? Mets are riding the wave and fun to watch. So are the Padres. The networks would love a NYC World Series or a NY/La World Series.

Even when a batter swings and misses on a fastball, tge space between the bat and ball is minimal. I don’t, for a second, think the batter actually sees the ball coming. Just guessing based upon experience. Tge distance is 60 ft 6 inches and a ball is coming at you at speeds up to 100MPH. I’m not smart enough to calculate that in time, but it’s not much. The best of the best hit the ball where somebody can’t get it 1 out of 3 times in 162 games. Not many humans can even hit the ball which is why the few are so coveted. Don’t read into a player’s performance after the fact of what you wanted the outcome to be.

Well put. You’re exactly right. People are so quick to just say “They stink!” And “overpaid jerks!” I looked at the team around 40 games in and thought they had a good chance of winning it this season. My thoughts were that they had too many good hitters to lose a series because they failed to score runs, but in the Mets series too many bats went cold at the same time. The pitching staff starters were very strong early on but the BP was surprisingly good. The starters were definitely good enough in this series to give them a chance to win every game. Unfortunately, the Pen imploded. We didn’t see that coming. And you are correct about the Manager. I’m not going to bash him. You’re going to make mistakes. But every move he made in this series did not work out. I’m they were all bad decisions, but there were absolutely bad decisions that had me scratching my head.

I genuinely don't understand how Phillies fans think the team has a shot at Soto. Both NY teams have deeper pockets, he already lives in NY, and both of them have a smaller payroll sheet than the Phillies. The Phillies just extended people and signed people to immovable contracts for YEARS. Wheeler. Nola. Harper. Trea. Castellanos. Taijuan. And then there's people still due next year. JT. Schwarber. All of the arbitration raises. Suarez estimated at 11 mil. You'd be looking at like a $330+ mil payroll next year, and not getting terribly better anytime soon

Bryce Harper says there's gonna be changes and three names that come to mind??? Bohm, Marsh & Rojas. I dont think it makes sense to bring in any big time third baseman with Aidan Miller in the prospect pool. With that being said I dont think they kick the tires on Alex Bregman & honestly I'm fine with that. Will Aidan Miller be ready next season though??? Idk. Now as far as our Outfield. Two names to look at... Plan A Mike Trout. Wouldnt be suprised if The Phillies & Angel's worked out a trade. Dombrowski has done business with them for the last two years. I wouldnt be shocked if Mike Trout was a Phillie on opening day. Plan B Cody Bellinger. The Phillies & Bellinger have been linked in the past. He will definitely be a Phillie if Mike Trout doesnt get done. Say what you want about Trout however we all know Dombrowski will go HEAVY after him. As far as Juan Soto? The Phillies will be in the mix however he either becomes a Met(especially with them in the NLCS) or stays a Yankee. As for Stott.. he just had a down year. I expect Stott to bounce back next year. Plus hes good in the field and he is one of our guys that actually is patient at the plate.

If not for the scorching hot first 2 months who knows if they would have even made it. Also Atlanta having so many hurt stars was in our favor as well. So with that said I'm not shocked by the outcome although it's still very disappointing.
@qj5978
@qj5978 3 дня назад
I thought the bullpen would have to be better after a terrible first 2 games. They were terrible all 4 games & Thompson completely mismanaged them.Turner has to be off the team before next season, and no, he is not an MVP candidate. Next year, the manager they bring in has to give signals during bats that MUST be followed, and if the whole team is swinging at every first pitch, fine/bench them. Austin Hayes was rotten, despite us being told he has massive power that he could not take advantage of in Baltimore. Trading Bohm, or sending him down is the only thing they must not do. Give Stott & Bohm another season; they have both only been up a couple seasons, and Bohm was a top 50 prospect when drafted, and was one of the better hitters in the game 1st half. His hand injury killed his season, and you'll never get value for him after his slump the last month or so. Let Bohm get his head straight in the offseason. Players do have month or longer slumps; Harper had 1 earlier this year. Like the Eagles with Hurts, however, Phils may be stuck with Turner because other teams will laugh if the Phils bring up his availability for a trade. So top moves have to be dumping Turner, in any way possible, dumping Austin Hayes, firing Thompson & replacing him with a real "bell--buster" who will bench players who always swing at the first pitch, and replacing Marsh with a major league level player. Wouldn't complain if they gor rid of Realmuto either, especially if he shows at the start of the season that resting & healing have not approved his offense. Only players I am ok with their performance in this series are the starting pitchers, Harper & Castellanos. I now doubt they'll win the NLEast next year, but if they do, anyone suggesting another post game drunken celebration for doing so must also be fired. They were never the same after that idiotic celebration, which also cost them home field advantage throughout the playoffs.

The pitchers of today are weak armed , a few years ago guys like Carlton, Gibson , Koufax , Ryan , Seaver and I could go on , would never come out of a game . If a coach went out for a mound visit , they would ask him what he wanted , otherwise get lost . It was never more evident with Zach Wheeler , first I would never have taken him out of game one with the Mets after going seven complete innings only giving up two hits . Here’s the ball , now go finish it . Also going back he would have started game four . I know you can remember when Aces pitched first , fourth and seventh games , them guys wanted the ball . Carlton said in an interview that today’s pitchers don’t throw enough that’s why they have weak arms . He said he threw more warm up pitches then they threw in a game . What the Phillies need this season was a Ben zobrist type of player. But the game from 10 years ago had change so much that is their a Ben zobrist player even around in 2025. I watch the Red Sox win 4 World Series in my life by walking and take those close pitches that the Phillies was swinging at. But the Phillies were chasing everything. This off-season, you need tougher obp players who will take a walk or have those tough at bats that drive the pitch count up. Quintana had 5 walks, it could have been 7-8 if the Phillies wasn’t swing at everything. Sean manera is a good middle rotation guy, so is Quintana, but the Phillies made them look like bob Gibson. The bullpen was terrible as well, 11 era? The bullpen choke, we know the Phillies can’t hit when it counts. But that bullpen could have saved game 1, and they give up 6 runs.

Sometimes these millionaire babies need a manager throwing equipment around clubhouse and cursing at them. (not all the time but certainly as this team started tanking at seasons end!!!!) They probably wont fire him. The phillies will decline more, and then after a couple more seasons they will fire him and rebuild. Harper gets to finish out contract and try to land on a winning team when hes 40.....or he retires having never won the big one. Thats their future. I been down this road a few times with them. Vientos, Acuna, Alvarez, Mauricio (hurt but better than the ones mentioned) with Lindor, and Nimmo as the veterans. I doubt Sterns breaks the bank for Alonso. The Mets are in a much better position moving forward. The Mets also have Gilbert and Williams waiting in the wings. No contest.

As a Braves guy, I agree. Philly only has a few good bats in their lineup who are consistent threats. Bohm and Stott have always been scrub players to me and the bottom of Philly’s lineup are easy outs. My Bravos still have a wide open window, we are just mentally soft because of they adopted Snitker’s mentality.

I'm not convinced this is a better team than the Mets. Mets have the best record in baseball over the past 4 and a half months now. Phillies final 100 games of the regular season they were barely over .500. They're just not that good. The team you saw in the postseason is who they were for the majority of the season. Gotta be very worried about the direction of this team. Huge names signed to huge deals, all of them aging and in their 30s now. Turner contract is shaping up to look really bad especially as his defense continues to decline. He's a speed guy with a high chase rate so his aging curve is likely to be brutal, and he's signed for 10 more years. Phillies could be entering a very dark period.

Bohm, Marsh, Rojas, Hayes. Maybe JT, although I doubt it. Not honestly sure Topper and his coaches are still here. The bullpen needs an almost complete rework. This is just ugly. Team coasted in the 2nd half, and it bit them in the ass. JT all but admitted it. Not good. Mets were just better, is what it is. They are playing very well, and are a real threat to win it all. Phillies have a lot of work to do for sure.

They need to do something at least slightly different if they want a real shot at winning it all. A complete teardown of a 95 win team is obviously extremely reactionary. They really choked vs. Arizona last year and they basically ran the same team back this year. The Mets are obviously playing really great baseball but the Phillies still showed a lot of the same troubling habits from the previous postseason and the goal is always to win it all and not just have a good regular season. They have lots of good players but quite a few of them seem to lack killer instinct in the playoffs.

Sosa wouldn't be playing for any other team. Let me explain the reality of why the Phillies failed..,.....the bottom of the lineup is pathetic and it affects the rest of the lineup. Schwarber home runs are often solo shots because nobody 6-9 gets on base. That also puts added pressure on the middle of the lineup to swing and produce runs. Its that simple!!!!

Guys Longtime NYM fan, but not the type of vulgarian who goes around saying LFGM Phillies have nothing to be ashamed about. You've got a solid, balanced team Are the Phillies better than the Mets? Objectively? Well, hell F-ing yes... I mean, certainly Phils ran into a juggernaut - likely to be unstoppable, until somebody stops them I suspect San Diego will be the Mets' last stop this year And truthfully, the Phils will be in the hunt next year, likely to the very end Now that I think about it, a 3 out of 5 series - after playing 162 games to get there - is pretty STUPID This playoff structure cheapens the game

As a Phillies fan I definitely can't hate on this viewpoint. Personally, I think the Mets are on a roll, and the Phillies lacked timely hitting in most instances, and the bullpen was flat out horrible, but I can't take anything away from what the Mets have done so far. Tbh, it's been impressive. They're doing exactly what the Phillies haven't been doing: timely hits and an effective relief pitching staff. Plus, the Mets' starting pitchers are really solid even if they are not your typical Cy Young candidates. But hey, that's how a winning formula is manifested in the postseason, and Carlos Mendoza has done a remarkable job as the manager of this Mets team.
