You didn't mention the Chicago Stadium the original Madhouse on Madison. That was a really cool old building and had a lot of history. It was where MJ won his first 3 championships, it housed the Blackhawks and 3 Stanley Cup championship teams. It also hosted the first indoor NFL game back in the early 1930s. Its now a parking lot for the building that replaced it the United Center.

There's one arena left out, the veteran's memorial Coliseum. It was the Portland Trail Blazers' arena from 1970 to 1995. The blazers reached the finals three times in that arena, winning it once. It's kind of an important arena to leave out. It's still standing right next to the rose garden where a major junior league hockey team uses it.

@MrT8599
@MrT8599 3 года назад
Well with Climate Pledge Arena about to open... It wouldn't be a shock if in just a few more years the Sonics make their long awaited return. I think what will happen is the NBA will expand to 32 teams. Both of these teams would be in the Western Conference. Also both of these teams would play at the arenas where the NHL teams are playing at. If you can't already tell, the two cities where the NBA would put their 31st and 32nd franchises would be Las Vegas and Seattle. These are the two cities where the NHL has recently expanded to. Also both T-Mobile Arena, where the Vegas Golden Knights play, and Climate Pledge Arena, where the Seattle Kraken will play, would host these new NBA teams. In the case of the Seattle expansion team, I would venture to guess that the SuperSonics name, logo, colors and history would be retained, with the Oklahoma City Thunder being considered sort of an expansion team. It would be very similar to the Cleveland Browns after Art Modell controversially moved the team to Baltimore, or like when the Charlotte Bobcats renamed themselves to the Hornets, as the New Orleans Hornets, the original Charlotte Hornets team, renamed themselves to the Pelicans a few years earlier.
@LockeDemosthenes2

I went to a few Nets, and several Devils games at the Izod Center (then Continental Airlines, but also known as Brendan Byrne/Meadowlands Arena, whatever you wanted to call it, etc.) back in the day. That including the final ever game the Devils played there against the Senators during the 2007 playoffs. I was surprised with how big the place was indoors, where the players almost looked looked line ants if you sat up high! The building did have a bit of a charm to it, even if it was widely ridiculed with how cramped it got when the place was anywhere near close to full capacity, due to it only having a single concourse in order to accommodate everyone in attendance. That and with how overall dull it was, with virtually no real amenities, while having very limited food offerings consisting of nothing more than standard ballpark dreck, along with being located right smack dab in the middle of a parking lot at the Meadowlands Sports Complex. I do miss that arena I'll admit despite though, and have no plans to ever set foot inside the new venue in Newark. Hard to believe that arena is now almost fifteen years old too! (L.O.L.!)

Highly interesting video. The one thing I would disagree with is the characterization of the Palace of Auburn Hills as obsolete. It had the highest seating capacity in the league and contained many luxury boxes and high end amenities. Tom Gores gave up a nice home for the Pistons in exchange for being the junior partner to the Red Wings in a smaller, taxpayer subsidized building in a declining city with an income tax that neither him nor his family lives in. On the bright side, the former site of the Palace has been transformed into other productive use relatively quickly compared to many other arenas in this video.

They just kept throwing tax dollars at it to renovate it, most of which went to improving the outer facade and not the insides, which felt like sitting in a huge basement. Charlotte Coliseum was actually a noteworthy arena in its first few years. It was the largest NBA Arena for a number of years and had a reputation for being lit. Charlotte Coliseum had a lengthy sellout streak for Hornets games which considering its almost 24,000 initial seating capacity is no small feat.

Another interesting tidbit about the Coliseum is that the overhead scoreboard crashed to the floor the morning of a game between the US Olympic team and some NBA stars.

Agreed. Nothing about Oracle arena (also known as the Oakland Alameda Coliseum Arena), but that may be too recent add the Warriors moved to Chase Arena in San Fran.

As someone who studied urban planning I find this fascinating how things have evolved, especially with the Washington and Orlando examples. Now with the pandemic shaking up everything, things are likely to take an even different direction than just a year ago.

Sleep Train Arena March 2022 Update: In June 2021, the arena's site was donated to California Northstate University. The arena was reverted back to its original name, Arco Arena, and hosted its final event on March 19, 2022, which was a free farewell event featuring Kings personal/alumni, where fans were allowed to enter the arena to say their goodbyes. The arena is slated to be demolished in 6 months make way for a medical school and hospital.

Forgot Buffalo Memorial Auditorium- home of the Buffalo Braves (now LA Clippers). Site is now Harborcenter (multiple hockey rinks, shops, and a Marriott Hotel). Also Rochester War Memorial - home of the Royals. Arena is still in use after a multiple of renovations to an AHL team, an NLL team and home to college and high school tournaments

Probably could have mentioned the Piston's other homes; the Silverdome and before that Cobo Arena. We all know about the Silverdome's fate. There's currently an Amazon warehouse on the property. Cobo Arena continued for years to be a home for U of D Mercy Bball and was a famous concert venue. (Bob Seger's Live Bullet was recorded there) Several years ago the building was gutted and was converted to more convention space for the adjoining Cobo Hall. (Recently renamed TCF center and then Huntington Place after Huntington bank bought TCF bank)

a lot of them would be the same venue as the NBA, like Boston, New York, Atlanta (Flames). Chicago, Detroit, (prior to the move to the Palace, the Pistons spent some time in the old Olympia) Toronto's Maple Leaf Gardens was turned into a grocery store with the upper level being utuilized by a local university for its athletic programs.
