Lost in the shuffle of 90s Carpenter in the remake of “Village of the Damned,” the 1960 chiller that was an adaptation of John Wyndham’s novel “The Midwich Cuckoos.” If there’s one movie in Carpenter’s filmography that hasn’t built up a following of any significance, it’s this one, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth another look - especially for those of us who’ve really only seen it the one time. And on that note, how and why did this remake go awry? Hide the children - especially the white-haired ones - because we’re going to find out just What Happened to John Carpenter’s Village of the Damned.

Edited by: Tyler Nichols
Narrated by: Tyler Nichols

Executive produced by: Berge Garabedian
SERIES SYNOPSIS: Hollywood has had its fair share of historically troubled productions. Whether it was casting changes, actor deaths, fired directors, in-production rewrites, constant delays, budget cuts or studio edits, these films had every intention to be a blockbuster but were beset with unforeseen disasters. Sometimes huge hits, sometimes box office bombs. Either way, we have to ask: What Happened To This Horror Movie?

The Village of the Damned remake was fine. The cast was great, and Christopher Reeve was fantastic. It's just that the original was way creepier.

I agree, I have a soft spot for this film. It's not a bad remake, it could have been a bit better yes, but it's not a horrible film. The cast was great, I liked the eerie score, overall a good film if you can appreciate it.

@@Spike-ex5bpNo, OP was right. The man’s name was Christopher Reeve. Though a lot of people have mistakenly called him Christopher “Reeves,” possibly confusing him with George Reeves, who played Superman in the 1950’s.

The original is one of my favorite horror movies. It wears well and can be watched many times. Actually, it's both subtle and very creepy. It's pretty faithful to the original novel, but the novel does go into more detail about the pregnancies and how devastating they were for the women, particularly those who weren't married.

Finally somebody is talking about this movie. I haven't seen a soul cover this. This movie stayed in my head like fridge and magnet... I love it. The kids are creepy. The story line about them all being born on the same night and same exact time was awesome. I haven't seen it since the 90s. Every movie used to just come on tv regularly back then. Now I have to search for these things. I also didn't know the kids were aliens. I thought they were just pure demon children. 😂

The fact is that the original opened less than 15 years of WW 2, the looks were based on Hitlers idea of perfection so it played lingering fears of that. Also there is something about a cold , upper class, English accent spoken by a child from that is a lot more scary than any US accent could produce.

Christopher Reeve said he was offered tons of money to appear at the Rose Bowl as Superman. He refused every time because he knew kids would be expecting him to fly away at the end of the appearance and he didn’t want to disappoint them. That’s got nothing to do with John Carpenter’s Village of the Damned. I just like that story.

What would be cool is, if they could set up a sequel per se, where it's discovered a handful of the children survived, and Tony and Tia of Witch Mountain fame (now older) were tasked into finding them, thinking they could train them into controlling their powers.

I'm a friend of this movie. The actors are just great: Alley, Hamill and Reeves in one movie is a plus. What was the point of bleaching their hair instead of getting wigs? Hair bleaching is a big hassle, especially when you have to get rid of roots color so often so it doesn't show changes. The chemicals can cause damage, even be painful.

Its a OK remake and one of the weakest Carpenter films lacking his usual atmospheric dread and ambiguity . I can't help but feel he would've done a much better job of it if he'd made it during the 80s with a tighter budget and no studio interference in the editing. Saying that it's still enjoyable with a good cast

Pity John Carpenter. He made some iconic pictures, despite most suffering poor initial runs, and built a reputation for well-crafted, suspenseful, often genre-bending fare, that his later work then did much to unravel. Big Trouble in Little China (1985) remains near the peak of his creative output; certainly nothing that followed would ever be as original, as stylistically effective or purely enjoyable. In the Mouth of Madness (1994) is the closest he ever came in the '90s to recapturing the verve of his early 80's output, and it's mostly a disappointment which never quite coheres and slides unfortunately into camp near the end, despite some very strong moments.
