What Happens After We Die? - Bishop Barron's Sunday Sermon

Friends, this week, on the Third Sunday of Easter, we have a passage from that magnificent twenty-fourth chapter of Luke-one of the appearances of the risen Christ to the Apostles. When we’re talking about the Resurrection, we’re talking about the central point of Christian faith, the hinge upon which the whole of Christianity turns. So to understand what we’re dealing with here is exceptionally important. What I want to do is reflect on the different views about what happens to us when we die that were floating around the eastern Mediterranean in the first century-and how none of them is on offer here.
Mass Readings:
Reading 1 - Acts 3:13-15, 17-19
Psalm - 4:2, 4, 7-8, 9
Reading 2 - 1 Jn 2:1-5a
Gospel - Lk 24:35-48

If Bishop Barron is speaking to your heart and you are not yet a confirmed Catholic, please go to your local parish church and join the RCIA program. At 55, I was Baptized and confirmed on Easter and it has meant the world to me. Just dive right in, join the Body of Christ, you will not regret it!

At least I can rest assured that Word on Fire donation dollars are not going to questionable research like IVF or promoting secret behind the scenes clerical marriages or supporting the commoditization of women and children. Or the creation of genetically altered human children. Bishop Barron doesn’t support forced homosexuality on people or making people choose an ideology as a requirement of ordination or of entering religious life. I am glad he doesn’t support the abuse of science and technology to the point of ending human enrichment in working for a living. Or that he doesn’t support anything heretical or against Catholicism like freemasonry or being controlled by his donors to compromise the Sacraments or contribute to the phenomenon of people not attending mass.

Your unwavering passion for the faith, your intolerance for dumbing down Catholicism's deep intellectual tradition, and so much more played an integral part in my conversion. As Bishop Barron says, we believe in the resurrection of the body... At the same time, I can't help but recall what was said on Ash Wednesday- "remember you are dust, and from dust you shall return" (as we receive the ashes)....
@wardjaeger8954
@wardjaeger8954 26 дней назад
Indeed, this is part of the curse of Original Sin that we inherit as human beings (Genesis 3:19). We say these words on Ash Wednesday to become painfully aware of our sinfulness. Lent is the season where we clothe ourselves is sackcloth and ashes, like the people of Nineveh, in order to repent of our sins. But the liturgical calendar does not stay in Lent. “The wages of sin are death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23). We would have “returned to dust” in our sin, but Jesus’ death and resurrection have actually gained for us a life even after death. That is why Easter is the Solemnity of solemnities, because we celebrate the immensity of God’s love which gives an eternal life we could never have achieved on our own. All that remains is to accept our place in the heavenly banquet, even in the present moment. Happy Easter season! Christ is risen, alleluia!

Yes, this is helpful and Bishop Barron is one of the few bishops here talking this way specially online. But in all honesty when we die, our spirit does leave our body and the body is eventually buried or cremated in the Earth and does turn to dust. But he’s saying that’s not the end and eventually we will be reunited with our bodies. They will come back to life, as Jesus did, in a glorified eternal, perfect state. So he is our example, and definitely our hope.

It’s an impressive feat in our culture to get 11,000 people to voluntarily stop and contemplate the fact of death. Most people live like it doesn’t apply to them and nothing has consequences.

I used to give Bishop Barron a hard time in my own heart. It wasn't until I realized that an army needs all sorts. I was holding him up to an impossible standard. I was expecting him to be the general, fighter pilot, door-to-door marine and demolitions expert all put together. That doesn't exist in reality, and once I started appreciated him for what he does well it all became much easier.

Has the Catholic church changed it's stance on the resurrection of our body after death? I heard this for the first time yesterday at Mass and again now with Bishop Barron. I always thought about the resurrection of the soul after this material life has ended. I thought only Jehovah's Witnesses or some other sect spoke of the resurrection of the body. Am I missing something?

I’m a JW and as an example when Jesus resurrected his friend Lazarus, he came back in a body that his sisters recognized and was no longer sick. His sister feared who would smell, but he didn’t come back like a zombie with decomposing flesh. The Bible clearly tells us what our bodies will look like. Job 33:25 says: “Let his flesh become FRESHER (or healthier) than in youth; Let him return to the days of his youthful vigor.” A spirit creature doesn’t have flesh and blood body, but everyone including the resurrected ones will have perfect bodies in God’s New World. 😊

A theoretical physicist who believes in the resurrection of the dead and the Kingdom of Heaven must delight in studying the fourth and fifth dimensions. The first three dimensions are physical -- length, width and height. The next two are mental -- time and consciousness. The sixth is the multiverse. Even science, as we know it today, leaves room for possibly explaining what happened to Jesus after He rose from the dead.

Agree with all that but what happens to the conscious spirit when it leaves the body I ask this to transmit to friends that don't believe there is any consciousness till the resurrection? God Bless

Great lecture. I have a hard time in my head about what a happens when we die. I do believe in a new earth and a resurrected spiritual body. But while it is the end of the times.. where are the people that died?. Sleeping?. Waiting?. Why do we say then that there is communion with the triumphant church ?. Heaven? Communion of the saints?.

Hi, friend! The catechism teaches that at death our souls are separated from our bodies and return to God, while at the end of days, our souls are reunited with spiritual bodies, renewed and perfected in God such that they no more see corruption. Similar to how Jesus after His resurrection could pass through sealed apartments, and appear and disappear at will. So, the souls of the saints are in heaven awaiting the resurrection of the dead, when they will be reunited with their perfected bodies. I know I said the same thing twice but I'm going by memory. You can read the section in the catechism yourself. Sorry I don't know the section number. Peace and love! ❤

Dear Bishop Barron, I have a burning question: we know that when we die, our human bodies that are buried eventually suffer decay and deterioration. Right? My question is this: at the resurrection, which body is going to be raised? Is it the same body that has decayed? Is God going to reconstitute our decayed bodies? Or is God going to make new bodies for us? Please, I really need to understand this. Thank you so much for the great work you are doing. God bless you.

We don't really know that for sure, I think. The Church seems sure that our remains play some sort of role (that is why we should do proper burials), but also that God will make us a new body. Like almost every cell in your body has been renewed after 7years or so. Of that body you have now, there is not a cell left that was there 7years ago. Yet you are still you, it is still your body, but in that time you also did grow as a person and you changed. In my mind (which can be false, I'm just a pondering lay person), the resurrection is similar to that, except glorified. Our bodies will be completely new, but the same body as well. You will be the same person, but different, because glorified. You will be the same, with your old body, and yet completely changed and completely new as well. I hope I made at least some sense😅 Gods blessing to my friend!

@@MrsYasha1984 Assuming I’m your friend, 🙏 thank you! The state of the body has rather gone out of fashion since cremation became fashionable and permissible - “ashes to ashes, dust to dust”… Christ rose with the same and yet somehow different body - hence the confusion of Mary Magdalene and the two disciples at Emmaus - and the Catechism asserts that we will do the same. When is a moot point but most would say at the ‘last day’, i.e. when Jesus returns in glory to judge…et al. I really shouldn’t worry about the details and I stick to my original advice to do one’s best to avoid anything and everything that might hinder one’s entry to Paradise - thanks to the redemption gained by the passion, death and resurrection of JC! Know that for sure! In Christ , OliverA

I am so glad that my friends told me about Bishop Barron. He is the best at making the scriptures come alive. I read his daily homily and every Sunday I listen to his homily before I go to Mass. I have a very mundane question. For years the Church told us that we should not be cremated which makes sense if our bodies will be resurrected and changed into glorious transfigured bodies. Now, however, we can be cremated but the ashes must be buried. What is the thinking behind this change??

Not allowing cremation, especially in the early years of the Church, was The Church emphasizing the fact that we will be resurrected bodily at the end if time. This is my understanding. Allowing cremation was the recognition that this error was no longer an issue, but keeping the ashes intact and burying retains the idea that the body is important and will be resurrected. A sister in law has disowned my wife and I because we insisted on a funeral mass and burial of ashes of my in laws. She preferred instead that the ashes be scattered off a bridge in Boston some 1900 miles away.

No, the counting of the years A.D. (Anno Domini....'in the year of the Lord') is considered to be from the birth of Jesus. We know that at the time of His death and Resurrection, Jesus was about 30 years old. So these events would have taken place around 30 A.D. (today people refer to it as C.E. - common era - but it doesn't change anything. We are still counting the years from Jesus's birth).
