Oh boy, this is a big one. The new M2 Max MacBook Pro is here and based on my testing it's a surprisingly capable machine with noticeable improvements over the previous generation! But what if you have an M1 Pro MacBook Pro and you want to upgrade? Can you simply swap out the logic board for one equipped with M2 Pro or M2 Max? Today we're going to answer that questions that not one single person has asked! What happens if you try to upgrade an M1 Max MacBook Pro to an M2 Max MacBook Pro: Today we will find out!

I'd be interested to see if you can upgrade the MBP M2 Pro to a M2 Max. Lets say you have a liquid spill on your MBP M2 Pro and damage the logic board, it would be a worth while upgrade to be able to replace the damaged M2 Pro board with one from an M2 Max.That would be a cool video

@@LeonZaneFigueira Oh wow, how is it like working at apple?
@Jan-xf8sk
@Jan-xf8sk Год назад
Impossible. This one ALMOST went possible if not for the screaming fans (you lose fan control) and the aggressive parts pairing of keyboard (you lose TouchID), trackpad (haptics sometimes don't work), and the display losing TrueTone (ambient light sensor probably paired.) I don't mind the parts pairing but, unlike Google, Apple makes it hard for even a normal consumer to verify spare parts and the option to pair/unpair even their own Apple parts-to the point that they require you a second Mac with Apple Configurator. (Google provides an online site to unpair and pair spare parts, probably for verification-albeit that's for their Pixel phones.)

I remember doing this thing on my 2014 15" MBP where if you held control + option + shift + power button for 10 seconds, released all the keys except for the power button, and kept holding the power button for 10 seconds, it seemed like it "turned off" the SMC and the MacBook would boot with the fans full blast and without any battery readings, just like in the video.

@bwilesuk

@@KorekFrost Sure - so the eye is accustomed to seeing motion blur. If you google a comparison of shutter speeds you'll see that when Luke moves his hands, for example, you can pause the frame and it'll be perfectly crisp, no motion blur. Adjusting the shutter speed or adding an ND filter (to achieve the same effect) will mean it looks much more natural, even if you won't be able to articulate why.

Very interesting. It seems that all of those issues you encountered (apart from the trackpad situation) are artificial software locks apple has put into the computers, similarly to what has been happening with iphones for a long time now. Apparently almost everything is code matched to the motherboard. Same thing might be happening to the fans. Although I suspect it has something to do with sensors, as with most laptops, if it doesn't know the speed of the fans, it will full throttle them.
@MXCN_El1011
@MXCN_El1011 Год назад
seeing as when luke unplugged the screen cable bit and it turned on, yeah it's 100% some software lock on the motherboard where it just isnt recognizing the other components and defaulting to full speed.
@dgpsf
@dgpsf Год назад
Really predictable anticonsumer behavior from Apple. Imagine how many hours of dev time are wasted on each generation making it impossible to swap most parts. They even moved so aggressively against repair that many parts are serialized so that they won't work if transplanted from a donor device of the same identical model. Or the insane idea of putting the SSD controllers on the logic board, and only the memory chips themselves on the Mac Studio's removable cards, making it so that only Apple can upgrade the SSD, when normal nvme drives have existed for what, a decade? With zero benefit, Apple goes proprietary any way they can.
@jadamsnz

On older MacBook Pros when the battery is indicating service required and will only run when connected to power the fans run flat out (and the CPU is throttled) so maybe something similar to that is happening here.

Could you get the fans to turn down manually through TG Pro? Also wondering what would happen if you brought it to Apple for a battery repair.
@davidnotonstinnett
@davidnotonstinnett Год назад
This seems really similar to what intel iMacs do when you don’t have the heat sensor plugged into the display. Same thing here is probably going on, there’s an ID number that the Mac wants before it will boot properly. There’s a list the Mac expects to see and it tries to match all devices to that list. It’s like…a pretty low tech way to check but it also pretty hard to get around if you don’t have access to the boot loader. What is really interesting is that it boots at all. This implies that isn’t the board itself, just some specific part of the board that isn’t being read by the MacBook that it wants there. This heavily implies to me that if some opencore equivalent could be developed for Apple Silicon, then these hardware swapping issues could be gotten around. Which would be good for both upgradeability and repairability (we might get to a point where M1 chips and boards are hard to find so we may want to upgrade for that reason)

The fact that the battery worked but it’s metadata related to cycle count or basic communication about charge level couldn’t be read definitely sounds like a by product of secure boot/encryption pairings done at the factory. And when decryption failed the default UI tells you to bring in for service. I would have assumed the same for the fans defaulting to full blast. But given that TG Pro is able to accurately display temperatures using Apples provided APIs. I don’t get why the fans couldn’t do something similar.

I wonder if it's something as simple as drivers (in terms of the battery/fans/etc)? Does Apple only install the drivers needed for the specific hardware, and could they be extracted and moved acrosss?

Most likely fan problem is a result of mac not talking to the battery properly, either cable was loose or it has different pinout which is unlikely. If battery is plugged in and activated, mac will run from battery since power is provided but it will not show it is present or show X or 100% charged + service. Battery has a temp sensor and in absense of any sensor CPU will throttle + fan will be fixed at 100%. As for display it seems to be random, there are multiple reports of swap resulting in shadow or strange backlight artifacts.

Where your video missed: if your M2 is broken, because the SSDs are highly proprietary and encryption tied to the CPU, moving the motherboard to an M1 would allow you to boot it and recover the data from the SSD. On the fans and battery, both would be controlled by the SMC and for the battery, changing it likely zapped the battery performance info SMC uses to determina charge. Did you try SMC reset? (this coiuld at least fix the fans, though Apple has gotte quite propriteray about battery).
