Seems like the only reason to upgrade from the M1 to the M2 would be to get the HDMI 2.1\high refresh rate feature(at least for me)... How much will trading in an M1 for an M2 reduce the price? 🤔
@@MarvinConnell The M2 Pro and Max does have a noticeable GPU performance leap but yeah HDMI 2.1 is way nicer than HDMI 2.0 and we can use a 4K or higher res monitor at a good refresh rate - which would be nice.
@@danseeli5194 I bought my first 2015 macbook refurbished over 7 years ago, and I'm still using it, typing this comment on it as we speak, all refurbished. Never had an issue with it whatsoever. Just ordered a 2023 refurbished today, finally upgrading, and got it for virtually the same price as the 2015 model. It was over 500 bucks off. Refurbished is the best for Apple products; many people I know have done the same and have not had any issues.
I'm not sure if the SSD's in the new Macs are a deal breaker for me, I doubt I'll ever have the machine under enough work load to notice the difference but the amount of tests you guys run is awesome helps so much when making a choice of which one to get. Thanks again!
I think these machines are gonna age very well (repairability and upgradability aside) if the diferences on CPU tasks are anything to go buy. People who bought the earlier M1 Macs will still have lots of power to squeeze out of their machines for years to come, and buying used/refurbished will be a great deal too. Thank you for all the time you invest into this!!
I just purchased the M1 Pro 16" 1TB for £2,255 here in the UK. Felt this was a better deal than the M2 Pro 16" 1TB at £2,899 (a £645 saving). Thanks for the comparison. Its made me feel like I'm not missing out on too much (well not for that price jump at least).
I'm really finding these comparison videos helpful. I am curious what the results would be if you compare a 512 SSD with 32gb ram, to a 1tb SSD with 16gb ram because of the swap speed.
Listen, I gotta tell ya, I really appreciate your analytical insights and that benchmark testing, and the real world comparisons on these two products. It helps me make a smart move on my next purchase. Ya did good, thanks a lot for your dedication to schooling us all in the Mac community.
so which one did u get cause im lookking to get another one but i can't decide between the m1 pro or m2 pro cause its just a 250usd difference cause i got student discounts
This is why I love this channel. This is so much better than scrolling through multiple benchmarking websites trying to digest the info overload. Really helpful for general consumers like me.
These tests are great in showing how these new machines are performing. Its good finally seeing web & UX being represented and showcasing professional use. I’d love to see multitasking and memory stress tests. I’m seeing if Figma is open, I’d also could have Miro, Zoom, Slack, with a few more tabs open. For next time, maybe show collaboration on files and prototyping designs could add a little more juice.
this. I feel like it's best to upgrade to 1TB at least for the M2, but if you then compare its price to the M1 base model, especially if you don't need 1TB of storage and you're just doing it 'for the speed', then it even makes less sense to buy the M2 instead of the M1... it just feels weird buying a 2021 laptop in 2023 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
There’s not another channel I’ve seen that goes this in-depth with all of these new machines and posts nearly every day like you do. Thank you for all the hard work you put into your videos. Keep it up!
For the baseline 16-inch MBP, the SSD speed is the deal-beaker for me. It is evident on the Lightroom Classic export and Chrome test with 15 tabs open. Great work Maxtech!
I thought about this and even though your point is valid, if you’re exporting to an external SSD, let’s say the SanDisk Professional SSD which writes at max 2700mbs, isn’t the speed of the export limited by the max write speed of the external SSD?
I wonder if they’ll bring Face ID to the 3nm MacBook Pro. I would personally upgrade to apply silicon once they suoooet egpus. Which hopefully come with the MacPro 😮
I just don’t know anymore if I should save more to get the m2 pro instead of buying an m1 pro with the money that I have now. All of this hidden features make me think about it too much 😅
Excellent comparison, as usual. Difficult to know how much of a handicap that slow SSD is for the base M2Pro. Really looking forward to the M2Pro vs M2Max comparison.
Is it confirmed that if you get the 1tb option on the M2 pro, it will come with the "high quality" SDDs? Or is it still a slow config compared to the 1tb M1 pro?
This is a great video, as always man!! :) Just a tip though (as someone that produces music on Logic Pro) you set the buffer size to 1024, that actually causes less stress. The lower the buffer size the less lag the program has for things like vocals or instruments, basically live recording, which is more stress. Set to the lowest buffer size next time and see what result you get!!
As usual, a fantastic video! I'd like to mention how consistent your comparison tests are, which makes it reliable and useful as a reference for newer models. In love with your videos💙
When used in the MBP laptops, this M2 looks to be great on low power mode when compared to the M1. Please may you put these machines through a suite of tests under low power mode...
I greatly appreciate your thorough review of the M2 Pro 16" MacBook Pro. I greatly appreciate the time and effort you invested in providing such an in-depth analysis of its features and performance. Thanks for your insights into the capabilities of the M2s, which have been very helpful. I appreciate your expertise greatly.
The way you describe the M1 and the M2 it was beyond amazing. You showed the pros and the cons. The things that changed and the things that shouldn’t be changed. You guys are beyond amazing and honestly keep up the amazing work you guys are doing ❤❤❤ I love the content ❤️
Great job with real-world tests. My Macbook pro 16 inch M1 Pro got stolen (luckily I had insurance). Watching this video for a 2nd time has solidified my choice on whether I should replace it with an M2 or go for the same M1 again. I'm obviously going with the M1 again. Thanks for your great review!
Really LOVING these comparisons! I'm here everyday for these videos! You guys are doing the best real world performance tests compared to everyone else out there! Thank you! ALSO the thermals on these new models is really kinda disappointing since they downsized the heatsink :(
There are a lot better real world tests on RU-vid. He just did benchmark, nothing to do with real world use. No one waits in front of their laptop and stares at the progress bar waiting for it to finish rendering.
@@nafisulislam4376 well, this video just tells that that the m2 pro is faster than the M1 Pro. Should be obvious that the new processor is faster than the old one. But there are no real world work use cases in this video. Just an example working in blender, when working on huge projects, how about viewport performance or timeline performance. Purely render times doesn't matter, when you can't finish your project, because the viewport is lagging and is limiting your work. i'm not saying these laptops are bad, they're great. But it would be nice, if he would show some workflow in his videos and not only benchmark numbers. I'm working a lot with 3D programs sculpting, creating animations and so on, so actual viewport performance is crucial. For me and some other designers I know, rendering = coffee break / eating / nap time.
This is the video we all needed! shocking results in Blender! 😮. I think the M2 pro and max will be totally worth it for some people who need it for 3D work. I would be supper happy with either the M1 or M2 but then again I'm currently running the same MB from 2012 I have had for the last 10 years! 😔
You guys are crushing these comparisons! I really want to see how the 1TB unit compares though since the swapfile is being hit hard with large projects.
Bruh, now there’s a bot account pretending to be Max Tech? This keeps happening to lots of big RU-vidrs in their comments sections, it’s almost funny. EDIT: In case said comment gets deleted, there was a bot account in this reply thread pretending to be Max Tech. My comment might look weird out of context lol.
Originally I bought a 2023 15 inch MacBook Air for $1299 to replace my older Mac from 2018 but I noticed even though it was better it wasn’t really a significant difference so I returned it And Went back to Best Buy and i was considering getting a M2 Pro 16 inch they were selling it for $2299 on sale and I went on eBay and seen a M1 Pro 16 inch in the same configuration for $1399 in mint condition so that’s around $900 cheaper for basically the same thing that’s the one I bought i do not need all that power now and the screen is absolutely amazing feel like it’s worth the money.
Ditto! I do a good deal of blender product animations and rendering, and the jump in performance is incredible. For that type of work it's definitely worth paying the extra $500 for the M2 Pro, or for that matter, the Mac mini M2 Pro, which at that low price is truly mind-blowing
@@johnnyc.31 they are? I would have expected the Mini Pro to be close to the MacBook Pro performance wise. Didn't know if MaxTech had done a comparison yet. Thanks for the heads up, gonna definitely have to check it for sure! Cheers mate, and thanks for the notice! :)
@@creativestudio101 As with all M series Macs, it seems to be the base models that are hobbled with slow SSD speeds. So as long as you upgrade, you should be fine.
That huge 3D rendering gain was very impressive and unexpected. I guess blender does a very good job optimizing for every small improvement apple makes
I think it just really shows the great effort the Blender team with the full support of Apple is bearing fruit. A lot of the "inefficacies" of the M chip really has to do with the lack of support or full compatibility from software companies with the M chip, not weaknesses of the M chip itself. So kudos to Blender for being one of the leaders, early adopters of full M chip support. And it's only bound to get better!
The new m2 pros look incredible, but I may see if I can get a secondhand m1 14" for a good deal, even with the slight performance bump to m2 pro, the m1 pro seems so compelling still. Thanks for the comparisons!
MaX Tech thank you for your work. But I would like to ask you something. Why don't you talk about the difference of Display Response Times? On one of your videos you said that the ProMotion of MacBook Pro 2021 doesn't seem as fast as on your iPad. The reason of this is the terrible Display Response Times of the screens of these MacBooks Pro. They have only between 40 and 60 milliseconds. The MacBook Pro 2023 has a little better Display Response Time but it is still very slow. If you want to use the advantage of 120 Hz of the screen you have to have Display Response Times 1 millisecond or even less.
Every speaker needs to be broken in. If you are testing an out of the box M2 vs M1 which was used, the older will always sound better. Mine was also little left out at first, but after few hours it sounds awesome.
Just got my M2 MBP 16" and although the speakers aren't exactly horrible, they're not good and not as clear as my son's M1 MBP 16". Frankly, neither are as good as they could have been but the M2 sounds muffled, they sound like you would expect them to sound if you had something blocking the speakers. With respect to the rest of the computer, ya, it's nice like you would expect but the notch is annoying af if you run a lot of background apps that have icons in the menu bar. Not a fan, I can't imagine they'll stick with that.
I’m really curious for how long the M1 Pro will be supported by Apple. The performance difference between M1 Pro and M2 Pro doesn’t justify a much longer support for the M2 imo
If you have a MacBook M1Pro 10-c CPU upgrading for the incremental performance gain is not cost effective. We should look at these M-machines like iphones, I plan to upgrade every 2-years and that depends on my digital creative workloads. Great reviews guys 👍
I’m frugal so I think I’d rather grab an Apple refurbished M1 Pro for my case usage. I’m not one to always want the latest thing, especially if it’s not a huge upgrade. For example, I’m still using an iPhone 11 but that will likely change this fall. Fingers crossed for USB-C and 3nm.
It’s really sad that Apple downgraded the SSD after they were Marketing it during their M1 generation presentation. Now they just „upgraded“ the laptop and don’t write about SSD speeds on their website… Doesn’t matter to me as I plan to buy a 64GB config with 2TB but still this is unexpected in such expensive machines
I bought a refurbished 2021 16 inch M1 pro with 16gb ram & 1tb SSD for 2.2k euro compared to 3.1k for the M2 model. Did I made the right choice? Don't think it is worth a ~900 euro upgrade..
the fact I was watching this thinking I wish someone could test these two computer with music production but I thought it was to specific / no one would YOU DID thank you for being thorough it is not going unappreciated.
Great videos - clear picture - the new M2 is overclocked, uses more wattage, makes it more unstable, and uses more power - cancels out the gains. Quality looks impressive, M1 my choice just gotta find one now
Great video, thanks for the comparison between the MacBook m2 pro and m1 pro. It was exciting to see the differences in performance and features. I appreciate the detailed breakdown and thorough explanation of each device as well as the tips on where to get great deals! You rock
hello, I've been watching your videos for 5 years now and even though I can't afford most of the reviewed models, thanks to you I have a much better overview of what bazaar model I'll buy and spend money on in the future... you're doing a great job, thank you for everything... :-)
These new Macs are for people who either have been saving up to get the latest releases or just have the money for an upgrade. The previous gen MBPs are still excellent purchase options.
I love these computers... Could you do a video of trying to upgrade the RAM? I know apple says you can't but I've seen many video of other ppl upgrading it
While I concede that the M2 16" MacBook Pro is better in the different tests that you do are better, but as a general user I don't think that is enough better than then the M1. So I'll just stay with my M1 16" MacBook Pro
I am upgrading from a 2020 Intel MBP and choose the M1 pro. The M2 Pro faster performance is great, but the cooling issues are obvious. Many years ago I had an Intel Macbook Air 13" and firstly it also warmed up only under load, but after few years it was constantly heating up to 90-95 degrees.
Thanks for all of these mac videos! As a student who is about to enter university, I really needed something liike this so that I could make the best decision on what computer to pick up and take with me for the upcoming years~
1st time Mac buyer here. Bought the 16" M1 Pro 1TB today for Music Production. Not worth the extra money in my case, especially with the current discounts!
Absolutely not, actually the best deals are: M1 Air 16/256 or 8/512 or even 16/512 M1 14 or 16" M1 Pro base models or with 1TB SSD refurbished M2 Air refurbished for the "rich" people who dont care about the things the 14 and 16" models can better and just want it SMALL
This is a good comparison. I imagine that quite a few people would decide to save money and get the M1 Pro version after seeing this. If I were interested in a 16”, that’s what I would do.
I'm now during process of buying my first ever Apple computer :) Decided to go for Macbook Air M1. Your videos was very helpful and give me better view on the matter. Thank you guys!
I think Apple gave the m2 family macs wifi 6e and bluetooth 5.3 because they wanted to be able to say, “look it’s better. It’s not just a performance upgrade.”
