That Time Star Trek Ripped Off D&D

Remember the borg from Star Trek? Well, so did the writers behind Dungeons and Dragons, because in 1989 they straight up yoinked the borg from The Next Generation and put them in a multiverse spanning adventure for D&D characters level 17-19! Today, we are talking about the oard, one of D&D's most blatant and fascinating creatures inspired by pop culture.

CORRECTION NOTICE: In this video I mistakenly claimed that Star Trek aired the first Borg episode before the D&D module was released. In reality the module, Where Chaos Reigns, was published in 1985, 4 years before the Borg were a thing in Star Trek. I think the website I was using to confirm the information about the module’s release date had wrong information either due to a clerical error or possibly because it was referring to a reprinting of the module itself. That’s my bad for not double checking. I pride myself and this channel on trying to find and present information about D&D’s history that is lesser know , so it’s very important to me that I make corrections when they come up. Anyways, just wanted to put that out there and let everyone know. The title has also been changed to reflect this. The rest of the video’s information is all still accurate as far as I know, but maybe D&D actually got ripped off in the end. Thanks for watching guys! Massive video coming next week, I'll see you then! Let me know what monsters you want to see me talk about on the show! Halloween is coming up so give me some spooky recommendations!

Going to be quite the wild ride with another dragon video coming so soon. As for Halloween monsters, any of the undead or monstrosities works for me. if you combine both races time travel story, then maybe Oards are rebels from far future who are magic-less cyborgs that rely on dead-magic tech, and went back in time to defeat Mindflayers, giving squid head's reason why they went back in time them self because there's someone who want to erase them from time And because Oard exist due to desperate need to defeat Mindflayers , they are also not so nice race due to tech they use, After all they are psy and charm immune race.
@Mr_Welch
@Mr_Welch 10 месяцев назад
One aspect you didn't address was the Oard's complete hatred of magic, the major plot of CM6 was the Oard were defeated by the magic-using races. Their primary motivation is to eliminate wizards, the creation of artifacts and the extinction of magical creatures in the timeline. Failing to defeat them in one timeline might end up as an extinction-level event in the future for elves or gnomes.

The idea of a temporal war between the Oard and the Illithids is super spicy, especially since the Oard are strongly resistant to psychic damage and are so focused on technology, as opposed to the strongly psionic and fleshwarping-focused Illithids. In a twist on the original adventure where the Oard made their appearance, the PCs could be tasked not just with preventing the Oard from dominating the timelines, but doing so in a way that the Illithids do not triumph either. And in this planes-spanning war between technology and psionics, might I suggest that a third faction representing magic could be sponsoring the PCs? Or, wild notion here, their patron could be a Reigar, who wants to wipe out both factions because art cannot exist in a multiverse dominated by humorless mind flayers or soulless automatons.

I like the idea of mind flayers and the oard having some kind of tense war with one another in the future, and they both came back into the past to give themselves a leg-up in said war. I could see this being similar to the Cybermen and Daleks from Doctor Who, or the Borg and Species 8472 (which are also telepaths) from Star Trek: Voyager. I too grew up on Star Trek: The Next Generation. I still remember Levar Burton doing an episode of Reading Rainbow and taking the audience on a tour of the set. They have been slowly gaining sentience. This has intrigued a wizard or artificer, who has been hunting down and chopping the forged apart. Then taking the parts he finds intriguing and grafting them on to himself. I think I might name him Oard in reference to this race now.

I like that Oard Vs Illithed idea. I can't think of a campaign idea at the moment but a fun idea I had might involve a museum filled with displays of uncommon and dangerous creatures from time and space. And perhaps while adding another exhibit something goes wrong and it's revealed all the creatures and artifacts on display are real and were just in a kind of stasis. Now the party has to fight their way out or find a means of putting the monsters back. During said event the party might find a group of Oard attempting to open a portal to pull reinforcements from another time. Or perhaps you encounter a group of Oard who got unfrozen in a room that was also home to some Kythons who are now battling each other and the party can simply watch, join, or use the confusion to sneak by.

One thing about the rip off the writers on TNG wanted to set up a BBEG but other attempts fizzled (such as the ultimate anti-federation faction ... the Ferengi😂) so it is possible, if unlikely, that it's more of a convergent evolution of the ideas that went into the faction. Minor correction: Where Chaos Reigns came out in 1985 not 1989. So the Oard actually predate the Borg lol.

Oarg might also be DnD Cybermen from Doctor Who. Another device they can have is the bomb implanter device. It touches a protental victim and implants one nanomachines bomb which is basically a Quivering Palm ability as a device. It can only be used once per adventure but hey, you only need it once.

Given the gnomes have magic powered and non-magic invention rules, in D&D the Oard are ideal for educating Gnomes in technology.

This fits amazingly well with my artificer villain who has traveled back in time with no way to get back home. So his plan B is to extend life (sort of like a lich) long enough to see his family again via cyborg augments. Will definitely be using some of this in tandem. Thanks Dad!

Wasn't there a borgy race in Planescape? A race of metal women with wire hair, native to Mechanus, who consider themselves perfect, and want to share their perfection with the rest of the Planes, by turning sufficiently high level humanoids into more of themselves?

Honestly, I have always loved the idea that you have these wizards and clerics and whole mountains colonized by dwarves and forests protected by druids or elves, and then there’s just actual robots and high-tech machinery that rivals even the most powerful of magics.

One of the terrifying traits of the Borg is their ability to adapt; the same type of attack almost never works more than once or twice, and this is spread to the collective. They're somewhat vulnerable to randomly varying attacks. Perhaps the oard could be weak to wild magic and items such as a rod of wonder.

A slightly different take on the race could be. That in the beginning it was unable to cast magic. But was instead able to interact with magical materials to craft excellent and beyond normal magic items of that time period. A kind of non caster dwarf species. The race could have then over time built an interface between their bodies and the magic they desired to cast. Using technology made with magical materials a blend of exotic biology and magical engineering. Thus the borg similarity. Artificers could be the races prefered class. They could also have messed with time for the module bit. But its unessesary. So a race thats based around magical engineering. To have a basic balance with other races. Could be interesting to run across the proto version of the race. With fighters + crafters attempting to find ways to compensate for the martial caster divide. Err one fix for the early bit is they could attune to 6 items rather then 3. This sets up how later on as they integrate there tec into their bodies to allow for casting. They loose item attument slots. Ending up back at the original 3. Anyway cool vid thanks for the ideas i could innovate off of.

Reminds me of a race i created as a sidequest in my bery first homebrew campaign. Theyre called the Telchines (amost sounds like 'tell kenny'), they are bipedal seahorse-dog looking creatures with no magical ability, but have high prowess in technological and martial skills. Magic and most magical abilities are completely ineffectual, as they were immune. The wizard of the group dumped all of his gold into a sack and repeatedly yeeted it at one of them by casting catapult over and over until that telchines neck broke. Also (just saying, this might be icky to read), they all have gauntlet-like tools that, upon impact, insert a Telchines clutch. This clutch bursts out of the initial wound after 2d4 days, dealing a considerable amount of damage to the carrier. The spawn is water dwelling, and will die within hours when exposed to normal air and direct sunlight. In the sidequest, the pc characters got lured into a spooky house( its actually a hologram devised by the Telchines to camouflagetheir ship), as they hear one of the last victims scream for help from the door seconds after arrival. They enter, and find themsleves trapped in a Telchines laboratory thinly veiled as the Wesker Mansion from Resident evil, as i used its basic floor plan as the map. Additionally, even though I know this comment is probably so long that people won't read the whole thing, my favorite creation out of that whole thing (other than the telchines themselves) was a weapon called by players as "that scary ass gauntlet". It didn't deal damage in any traditional sense, but successful hits would incur a point of exhaustion upon the target, with critical hits dealing 2 points of exhaustion. If you want players to be afraid no matter what, make a magic-immune monster that deals exhaustion damage

Honestly, I feel like the Oard would work really well as a PC race choice. Having a player that's an Oard Artificer with a secret mission in this time period could set up an interesting dynamic for a party that doesn't know what Oards do (or maybe you modify Oard lore in your world to make this work). Thanks, Dad 🖖
