There were Hardy Hibiscus growing here when we moved into our home over 20 years ago. I've grown them without topping them, and I've grown them with topping them. I'm convinced that you get more flowers by taking the time to top them one time when they first start forming flower buds.
In this video, I will show how I top our Hardy Hibiscus, and then what they look like as they develop and then finally bloom. Just a couple of minutes topping them will pay off when they finally bloom and have many more flowers.

So I listened to your video last year and didn’t pay attention to snipping the early buds, because I had a hard time doing that, this time I am waiting for those buds to show up so I can snip them to encourage a bigger bush and more buds. Thank you for this wonderful tip.

Just a friendly suggestion: when you do this to flowering plants you do get more flowers. This taxes the energy of the plant to make them, so you can end up with smaller flowers. Flower specific fertilizer really helps the flowers to reach their normal size potential. Just a helpful hint.

Another case for another plant type that really gets strong after topping. Even the unopened buds of that kind are really interesting like tiny paper lanterns. A dainty flower like that can be a little down putting for some, but the rate it makes new blooms would be a treat against that for sure. Good stuff. Thanks for the share!

thanks for showing how to top these. this will be my third spring with my hardy hibiscus, and im in oak ridge, tn, zone 7a. the first year, they only got about 2 to 3 ft tall, and they were very nice for their first year. the second year however, they quadrupled in size to about 5 to 6 feet, which was really nice, but unfortunately, because of the height and weight of the stems, and the way the weight of the stems caused the stem to kindof bow out from the main, and some of the stems actually broke off at the base, and i was very upset because obviously all those flower buds never got to bloom... they will be emerging from the ground again in a couple weeks, and i was thinking, what can i do for my hardy hibiscus, should i stake them, or what, so then i see your video, and i will top them instead to make them bushier with more flowers rather than get 5 foot tall stems that cant support themselves. do you also stake your plants also? or if you top them off do you not need to stake them? at what height should i start to top them if they get to 5ft to 6 ft where i live? at 1 ft, top them a little? or wait till 2 ft? and also, if i top them the first time, is it alright to do again if they grow too much again? i dont think i want them to get to 5 and 6 ft again, not beause its not pretty, because it is, but pretty is no good if the branches break off!!! also, they are not leggy at all, they are very healthy, perhaps too healthy, which is why the stems get so fat and healthy. thank you for helping me!!
@MidwestGardener
@MidwestGardener 4 года назад
Some varieties have a tendency to get taller than others. They do best in full sun, so if they have too much shade they can a little leggy too. Since yours get so tall, I think I would top them when they are about 2 feet tall, and then again at about 4 feet tall if they haven't bloomed or have buds yet. I don't stake ours at all. BTW, I have a son who lives not to far from Knoxville. I'm not sure how far that is from where you are. Good luck! They can live for decades if well taken care of.
@missjenniferd
@missjenniferd 4 года назад
@@MidwestGardener knoxville is 15 minutes away from me!!! thanks, i was thinking at the 2 feet mark also, and then at 4 feet, i just hope i dont lose flowers because of it, but, mine get tons of flower buds on it, and i think would probably do very well with being topped twice, they are in full sun after they pass thru the morning trees, so i'd say after about 11am, until 6 pm, so they dont necessarily get leggy, just way tall, and way thick, and because so many stems coming out from the bottom, they bow out to make room for the new ones coming up from the center. then the stems on the outside, once they've bowed out so much, they just actually break off at the bottom, best explaining this like when you take a celery stalk, and bend the outer stalk off so that you can use it, how it breaks away from it at the bottom. maybe the pinching will be exactly what i need, i still think i may have to stake the outer ones, they lean out so far (not to get sun, but because the center of the plant is so full, that they have to lean out) (sometimes i think they are getting so much sun that they are actually growing to big for their own good. the one that is closer in toward the shade, (gets less direct sun, and for less hours), it never bows out because it never gets as big. maybe i will top the outer ones 3 times instead of 2 to keep the stalks from getting so tall and top heavy, when they bow out, they just break under the weight of it. i'd say they bow out almost to a 45 degree angle (just on the outer stems)
@MidwestGardener
@MidwestGardener 4 года назад
Sounds like you have a pretty good plan. Let us know how it works out later this summer. I'm thinking they will do much better after being topped a couple of times. Good luck and stay safe!
@missjenniferd
@missjenniferd 4 года назад
@@MidwestGardener so far it's working good!!! i made my first cut at like only 8 inches, because they were growing really fast and spindly, like 2 inches per day or something!! so i just cut just the top inch off, and that already caused it to fatten up a bit and put some branches on the sides of those stalks. when i never topped them, they kinda just grew really tall and no branching off, so i thank you once again for this video. i thought previously that if i cut the top off that it wouldnt flower (like when the deer or rabbits eat the tops off my lilies, they don't flower at all,) and i was thinking the same would happen with these hardy hibiscus but i ssee now, that they will be more bushy with pruning back instead of being so tall and lanky. plus when they get 6 feet tall then i have to stake them because the stalks arent strong enough to support it. thank you once again --- great instructional video!!!

Hi Jim, I'm wondering if you've ever propagated these perennial hibiscus from cuttings? I bought and planted 2 of the Midnight Marvel Hibiscus (they have gorgeous dark mahogany foliage) a couple of weeks ago into 15 gallon grow bags (since I don't know where I want to plant them yet). In the process of planting one of them I accidentally broke off a large branch from the bottom so I pinched off most of the leaves and the flower buds and planted it directly into the grow bag. So far in the 100 degree temps it's not looking good, so I'm pretty sure it's toast. Just wanted to know, have you ever tried growing one from a cutting?
@MidwestGardener
@MidwestGardener 5 лет назад
Hi Margie. That's something that I've never tried to do. I'm not sure if the hardy hibiscus can be started that way or not. I would think that they woody tropical ones could be. It never hurts to try though. Our hibiscus form such a clump that I thought they should be easy to divide in the spring. Well, maybe not easy, but it should work.

After I top my hardy hibiscus (only started doing it last year), I put the cut piece in water. It grows roots very fast - then I plant in small pot with earth. Hi, This plant is a beautiful display in my landscape. However, it is not easy care. Not for a person who wants less time in the Landscape then cleanup requires. This plant does not require deadheading. Oh, but the time I save is still spent on picking up the ugly spent blooms. Yuk! I'm considering removing this one and finding a real easy care plant in its place. No Shade! I admire those who enjoy all the care that Hardy Hibiscus require.😉

We have three hardy hibiscus that are a few years old. They do quite well, but the base roots of the plants are so thick that it's hard for the new shoots to find a way up through them. So many of those new shoots are coming in around the edges of the base, are often spindly and wind up growing at an angle, low to the ground, almost parallel, instead of straight up. Especially when the tops become heavy with flowers buds. I've tried pruning back the ones that grow this way while they're young in the hopes that the plant will put more energy into those that come up straighter but it's not entirely working. Any ideas how to help those shoots make it through the thick base?
