Join me on a daring beekeeping adventure as I attempt to harvest honey from my beehives under the cover of darkness, without the usual safety of a smoker. Watch as the bees react to this unconventional approach, and see the unexpected challenges I face when the stings start to add up. Will I successfully gather the honey, or will the bees have the upper hand in this nighttime harvest? Tune in to find out and witness the highs and lows of beekeeping without the usual precautions! 🐝 #Beekeeping #HoneyHarvest #BeeAdventure

It surprises me that your fire ban extends to using a smoker. Even at the peak of our fire season, contained fire (like smokers) are allowed. This harvest was quite brave of you!

@AussieBeeKeeping - Have you tried the Aposolis smokeless smoker? It’s a chemical smoker, no fire. Some beekeepers love it.

Uugghh I really felt for you! They are so damn crawly at night time and find their way in to any tiny gap. I always cloth tape the begeezus out of sleeves, pant legs and zippers and wear a full suit if I have to do something at night.

I came here to say the same. The worst bout of stings I ever had was with a nighttime removal and red light that is supposed to help but doesn't.

Have you tried sugar spray? I find that almost as good as a smoker. The bees get sticky and can't fly. Plus they spend their time licking the syrup off each other.. yummy! It does them no harm and puts them off the attack. A fume board might have helped, too... The problem with working bees at night is that they have nothing to do other than sting you, and they are attracted to light. It's a bad combination. +1 vote for Flow supers. Every time I get a bit of spare cash, I stick a flow super on one of my brood boxes. It saves a lot of time and effort harvesting, and it would have avoided getting stung in this case. Crack the frames, sit in the car with a cool drink and wait until the honey's drained out. it's an expensive option but how much would you pay not to be stung?!!!

Holy Moses this is my first year beekeeping and I was always thinking that inspecting and or harvesting at night would be best as I thought they'd be calmer.. maybe not a good idea..

At night, everyone’s home. Middle of the day, foragers are mostly out, and they are the ones that sting… But, you can’t harvest if it’s 40 C.

More power to you. I know that had to hurt. Have you ever tried honey bandit when harvesting your honey? Might help to keep the bees at bay if you drive them down to your lower brood box first. Better luck next time 🐝🤞💜🍯

Would a bottle of vinegar and water have helped to get the bees away from you when you were being covered towards the end of your filming? My bee mentor always sprays us down with vinegar and water after we have been in a cranky hive as we walk away which seems to get them to leave us alone enough to be able to get back to our vehicle and undress.

I get not being able to have a fire. Are you able to start some charcoal at home? Once they catch, put the coal in the smoker. By the time you get to the hives, it's ready to throw some kindling and grass in. Your bees always seem very timid. Almost makes me wonder if the infrared light bothers them in some way. Whenever you remove the top and the light hits the hive, they seem to run to the top and take flight. Instead of the normal walk up to the top.

Unfortunately the “hot works ban” includes my home area. And charcoal would still be considered a no no. I don’t think the red light has a negative effect

That sounded like you copped a lot of stings all at once. Better luck next time - but at least it looked as if there's honey in the hives, which is fantastic after the first half of the season turned out to be so disappointing.

I’m guessing 60 plus stings. Legs were a bit sore today.

Why don't you use a bee escape for harvesting? It's much easier and reduces the stress on the bees. If you can't use a smoker with fire, you can try the Apisolis E-Smoker. It's an electric vaporizer.

Tragedy is running out of ice for your drink. Comedy is someone else falling in a vat of sh!+ and drowning. I have to confess i was laughing at you running and getting stung!

I wasn't laughing. I was feeling those stings. Back in the day (60s and 70s), the bees sent me running more than once.

No thank you! Night work is for moving and such not pulling honey... Try using a blower during daytime. Works great!

@@aussiebeekeeping it's regularly 110f here in summer and that's what I use. Place an empty box below the super and blow them down. Some lay it on its side and blow them but not my way. Options are great!

My dad was wounded in the legs in WW2 so his legs were kinda sensitive. He always taped his cuff to his boots when working his bees. Your experience this night highlights the value of a smoker. I bet I enjoyed your night work more than you did. LOL.

instead of smoke...some say water in a spray bottle with a few drops of rosemary oil i think it is, would do the same job..?.....

Absolutely. I was going to do that with some sugar syrup but I could garantee the spray bottle was clean.
